25 February 2023 / I met my autism mentor from disability in Birchington-on-Sea for an excursion to the Powell-Cotton Museum and Quex House today! So I’m back to having some interesting photos to share. :)

I still don’t have much to report since most of what I’m doing is just reading and running code. I finished Dear Lord Rothschild and The British Museum Natural History this week - tomorrow I need to take notes on both. I’ve also been beta testing a bunch of code, and that’s been both a struggle and interesting! Those of us who are working on the project have a group chat which is way more convenient than trying to email each other.

I’m in the process of finishing off Babel and am also making my way through The Cloisters.

History of painter # 1 Dante Gabriel Rossetti - 1828–1882

  -  Rossetti was born in London in 1828.  His father, was an Italian political refugiee, and his mother was half-english half-italian. He entered Sass's Drawing Academy probably in late summer 1841. He joined the Royal Academy Schools as a probationer in 1844, becoming a full student in December 1845. In 1847 he was considering careers in both poetry and painting.

In August 1848 he moved with William Holman Hunt to a studio in Cleveland Street and around September that year founded, with Holman Hunt and J.E. Millais, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.  He was largely responsible for the Pre-Raphaelite magazine The Germ, published in 1850. 

In 1856 he met Edward Coley Burne-Jones and William Morris; he was a contributor to Morris's Oxford and Cambridge Magazine. Five of his illustrations were included in Moxon's edition of Tennyson's Poems (published 1857).  

From the mid-1860s he began suffering from eye trouble and insomnia, and showed signs of paranoia. In 1862 Elizabeth Siddall, his wife, died from an overdose of laudanum. In October 1869 he exhumed his wife's coffin to retrieve his Poems, which were published in 1870. His health broke down in 1872 and he abandoned most of his old friendships.  He died at Birchington-on-Sea, Kent in 1882.

Birchington on sea, 7th August

A really hot day today so we decided to stroll to the beach, about half an hour. Lovely sandy bay. A lot of people but all keeping well apart and the sea was really warm.

Wandered back through the town, picking up some salad for tea (much too hot to cook), and walked round the churchyard to find the grave of Rossetti. He came to Birchington to convalesce but died here.

Back to the site for a lazy afternoon in the shade for the afternoon, enjoying the peace and quiet.
