I've been thinking about Theodore's allusion in RWBY; He's supposed to be based on Dorothy, that should be a given. But in RWBY: Before the Dawn, it's mentioned that Theodore has a picture of a little girl in his office with a dog.

Now, if Theodore is Dorothy, then who is the girl that was once important enough to keep a reminder of? My theory is that this girl is also Dorothy.

(Insert: "I connected the dots" "No you didn't" meme here)

Here me out. RWBY is not afraid to do combined allusions; Blake is most obvious, being Beauty and the Beast. What we may have here is something similar.

In Ozma of Oz by Baum, what causes Dorothy to return to the normal world is seeing her Uncle Henry dying from the sadness of losing his niece. What I'm saying is that Theodore might be both Dorothy and Henry; Theodore is what if Henry had been the one to fall to Oz, but instead of returning to Kansas, chose to remain in the magic land. In short, Henry in Dorothy's role.

Ugh I know this is really, REALLY far flung for the moment but...... let's assume Ruby goes through this same 'rebirth' process the Afterans do for just one second.

There's one other show that has dealt with this theme very well, applying a 'rebirth' story arc to a sci-fi that was rooted in the nitty-gritty around very realistic and human reactions to the extinction of humanity as they knew it:

Battlestar Galactica.

For anyone that isn't familiar with it, Kara Thrace was one of the last remaining Ace-Viper Pilots defending the Battlestar Galactica, a ship that carried what reamined of humanity (i think there was about 5-10k people left by the end of the show) against a robot onslaught.

In the Ever After, the Afterans go through the process of rebirth, they are given a new identity, and a new purpose. When they fulfill that purpose, the cycle of rebirth starts again, and they are made anew.

Kara Thrace went through a very similar process: She died an untimely death, only to return to the Battlestar Galactica months later in the same Viper ship she died in, completely intact.

Why does this matter? Kara returned by means of intervention beyond anyone's knowledge for a single purpose:

To save what was left of humanity from the evil that wanted them extinguished, and deliver them to a safe harbour.

When Kara's purpose was fulfilled, and she disappeared. Her departure was not questioned, only understood that she had completed her task:

"Where are you going?"

"I don't know, I just know that I am done here. I've completed my journey.

It feels good."

Why does this matter? Looking at the endgame for RWBY as a show, I feel like this would be a really fitting, really final journey for Ruby herself to undertake: For her purpose to not be to win an unwinnable War, but to save humanity, and in that, complete the purpose she had been reborn to fulfill.

I’ve been listening to Red Like Roses 2 on repeat after today’s episode, and there’s actually multiple references to Ever After???

“This little fairy tale doesn’t seem to end well. There’s no knight in shining armor who will wake me from the spell!” -The Rusted Knight, though he cannot be the invincible hero Ruby hoped for, because he’s just as lost as she is.

“I tried so hard to protect you, but I failed to.”- The Mother’s Broken Promise

“This bedtime story ends with misery ever after. The pages are torn and there’s no final chapter.” -The Book is shown burning in the opening. Also likely a reference to the possibility of Summer having died in the Ever After, failing to return home.

Hi! Just wanted to reply to your tags real quick 👋 I had to reread the passages because I couldn’t remember if Sun ‘faked’ not knowing where the dojo is, and he kinda does, but it’s read more as him deflecting from talking about Starr/going to see her. He definitely states aloud that, like you’ve said, he isn’t sure if the dojo would still be there after all this time. Also, Vacuo, including the city itself, seems to be very much connected relic of destruction and the cycle of like destruction–rebirth/rebuild (at least that’s how I see it lol).

Sun also later stumbles upon the dojo with Velvet before they go to the underground fight club and while he seems a little surprised that it’s still there, he still refuses to go see his cousin as ‘it isn’t the right time; that he tends to go off to help people who need him more; and that the right time to see her would be when he knows he isn’t going to leave again’ which a) is just more deflecting and/or Sun fearing rejection from Starr, and b) that Sun maybe doesn’t think that Starr ‘needs’ him—which idk about you, but that also has had me raising my eyebrows. Like yeah, he’s looked up to her since he was small, and she’s raised/cared from him since like the age of seven(?), and we know she’s a fighter to some degree—she’s like a goddamn wonder woman—but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t need her family? Maybe he knows something that we don’t? Maybe he knows that she isn’t completely transparent with him/hiding something? …maybe it could be another ‘Starr is the summer maiden’ flag. Or maybe it’s just more over analyzation lol. WHO KNOWS?? 🤷

ah, i had completely forgot that the dojo appears before the epilogue!! that's... interesting. sun goes where he is needed, usually by someone else, but that wouldn't explain why he initially left vacuo—and starr—to go study at haven, would it?

so, what would make sun believe that starr didn't 'need' him, and that he would be needed somewhere else, instead? did starr have other people helping her, which sun took as no longer being 'needed' around? if those other people included, say, theodore, would that explain why sun calls him 'theo', even after being told not to call him that (though i don't think he does it again when theodore is around), because that's how starr referred to him? because of the certain level of familiarity that would be there due to starr being the summer maiden?

sun has already picked up on starr having an uncanny sense of the weather, so it would not surprise me if he has picked up on other things, too... like you said, that starr might be hiding something. obviously he wouldn't know exactly what it is, but any 'odd' behavior from starr, especially if it's towards him—for example, sun asking questions that maybe hit too close, and starr brushing him off?—could translate in younger sun's mind into starr no longer 'needing' him... and so he leaves somewhere where he might be needed, instead.

I'm a month late on this ask, sorry! I would've said we'd get it at RTX, since that's a big event and people would be compelled to buy tickets and attend so as to be among the first to know. But here we are a month later and yup! They're gonna reveal it at RTX, surprise, surprise XD

As for the length, I've heard from several people (and one of the writers iirc?) that it'll be a short volume with fewer episodes, but I don't remember the actual number.

A Day in Salem's Life on ancient Remnant

(A mob of villagers have gathered just outside of Salem's cottage)

Townsman 1: All right, let's get 'er! (Almost charges, but is stopped)

Townsman 2: Whoa, hold on! Do you know what that thing can do to you?

Townsman 3: Yeah. She'll grind your bones for her bread.

(An amused chuckling alerts the mob that Salem is standing behind them)

Salem: Actually, that would be a giant. (The mob gasps and start backing away. She advances) Now, witches, they're much worse. They'll make a soup from your freshly-peeled skin.

Townsman: No!

Salem: They'll shave your liver, squeeze the jelly from your eyes! (thoughtfully) Actually, it's quite good on toast.

(One townsman bravely waves his torch at Salem)

Townsman 4: Back! Back, beast! Back! I warn ya!

(Salem sticks her fingers in her mouth, then douses the flame with a pinch)

Townsman 4: (Sheepish) ...Right.
