Choisya ternata (Mexican orange blossom)
Vancouver is much too cold for orange trees but this hardy lookalike does well in our climate. As the name suggests, this plant is from Mexico, it’s drought tolerant and can handle temperatures down to -10C (14F). Also a member of the citrus family (Rutaceae), Choisya ternata usually flowers in early summer but occasionally will do a major rebloom at this time of year. It’s flower looks very much like an orange blossom and it’s equally fragrant but, alas, it doesn’t produce edible fruit.
