Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri have announced that Nintendo and Illumination are partnering on another animated film based on the Super Mario Bros. world.

The untitled film is currently scheduled to release to theaters on April 3, 2026.

The Hope and Worry of Super Mario Bros. 2023

I have read that most of the fans believe that the upcoming 2023 Mario movie could be an enormous improvement over the live action film, and they believe it could be good as well as being more faithful to it’s source material as opposed to the 1993 movie where it wasn’t. The worry is that most fans may hate it, and get sour at Universal and Nintendo for it, resulting in Universal and Nintendo’s film deal to expire and move to Disney, in which Mario will star in *gulp* Wreck-It Ralph 3! I don’t want that to happen, because Disney created Wreck-It Ralph to copy the formula of Shrek! Without Shrek, we would still only have Despicable Me and Megamind.

Nintendo and Illumination announce new Super Mario Bros. animated film

Nintendo and Illumination have announced a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. following The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It will launch on April 3, 2026 in the United States and many additional markets globally, with select territories releasing throughout the month of April.

The film will be produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and Nintendo representative director and fellow Shigeru Miyamoto; directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic; and written by Matthew Fogel. It will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures.

I just left the theater where they screened WISH   .

This film is proof of everything 151eg said on several occasions: "the producers are the real villains, because they don't know what they're doing".

Because I would bet anything that if the production had left more freedom to the people who work at Walt Disney Animation Studios this film would have been different and more beautiful.

The Disney that I remember didn't give the public what it wanted but gave the public what it needed, and I think that in this, a little, it's also our fault because we demanded too much, and now we have to pay the consequences.

Chris meledandri (a producer who really believed in artists) always said: "If a film costs little you have more freedom, but if a film costs a lot you will have to deal with several majors and avoid them censoring you in the Middle East etc...

I could go go on for hours to list the problems that Disney absolutely must solve, but I know that it would be useless, we can only hope that from next year we can remedy in some way (even if late, but better late than never) the damage that has are carried away with this film.

This will certainly not stop us from loving Disney, in fact we all hope for its improvement. ❤😢
