#Chrysler 200 Convertible
Text
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lancia Flavia Red Carpet Special Edition, 2012. Lancia and Chrysler are now brands within the greater Stelllantis group and in the early days of their relationship there was an attempt to badge the Chrysler 200 using Lancia's historic Flavia model name for the European market. For the 2012 Venice Film festival this led to a collaboration between Lancia and Poltrona Frau. The partnership between the two companies go back to the 1920's when their respective founders, Vincenzo Lancia and Renzo Frau, began a collaboration that has lasted for 100 years. Though the exterior of the Flavia remains standard apart from the film festival branding the red leather interior exhibits the quality of the Italian interior, furniture design and leather upholstery company.

1953 Thomas Special Coupe
The '53 Thomas Special Coupe was the third of Chrysler's "Idea Cars" designed by Virgil Exner and built by Ghia in the 1950s. The first was the 1951 K-310 coupe, which was followed by the C-200 convertible in 1952 and the Thomas Special Coupe in 1953. All three cars were built on the New Yorker chassis and used New Yorker drivetrain components including the 331-cubic-inch "FirePower" Hemi V-8 and three-speed Powerflight automatic transmission.
Chrysler's Idea Cars were commissioned by Chrysler president K.T. Keller to compete against styling coming from GM's Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell and even out of Ford's postwar designers. The Thomas Special certainly turned heads with its dramatic squared-off fenders and sculpted hood. It received such praise that Chrysler considered putting the car into production. Ultimately, the car never reached production, but Chrysler had six examples produced and Ghia liked the design so much it produced another 12 for itself….( Motor Trend)

1947 Ford Super Deluxe Sportsman Convertible
Chassis no. 799A1705068
THE FORD SPORTSMAN
With the end of World War II, there was a huge demand by the civilian population for new cars. The Ford Motor Company, like other manufacturers, had devoted the previous four years to military orders. To hasten postwar production, Ford and the rest of the industry gave their 1942 models a facelift. One new style however appeared in the Ford line in 1946, the model 71, known as the Sportsman Convertible.
The company had been producing station wagons at the Iron Mountain plant on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan since the early 1930's. They owned extensive hardwood forests and had a state of the art sawmill and woodworking facility. During 1945, Henry Ford II ordered a wooden bodied convertible as a one-off for personal use. With prewar Chrysler wooden station wagons indicating the presence of a market, the decision to produce the "Sportsman" was made. The first car off the line was put on exhibition in Dearborn and on Christmas day, 1945 went to actress Ella Raines in Hollywood, while she was filming White Tie and Tails.
The 1946 model was priced $200 more than a conventional convertible, which sold for $1436. Production began in earnest in July of 1946 and continued until November of 1947. Total production was 3,525; with 723 in 1946, 2774 in 1947 and 28 for the 1948 model year, making it one of the rarest of all Fords.
The Sportsman used the same "motor-lift" top as the club convertible and had hydraulic push button windows borrowed from Lincoln. The wooden bodies were beautifully detailed and intricate, however the rear deck lid was a masterpiece of compound curved, dovetailed and finger-jointed craftsmanship

1948 Chrysler Town and Country Sedan
The first Chrysler Town and Country was a wood-bodied, barrel-back sedan in the 1941 six-cylinder Royal line. Exactly 999 were built, 200 of them in six-passenger configuration and the rest with three bench seats to hold nine people. A similar lineup was continued into 1942, with nearly identical production despite the war-shortened model year.
For 1946, only a conventional trunk-back sedan and an eight-cylinder convertible coupe were built. Just 100 long-wheelbase eight-cylinder sedans were built, the rest being six-cylinder cars on the shorter Windsor wheelbase. The new-design second-series 1949 line dropped the T&C sedan, and for 1950 the model was only available in an eight-cylinder hardtop coupe with painted insert panels. Thereafter, the name “Town and Country” graced a long succession of Chrysler steel-bodied station wagons and minivans.
Total Chrysler Town and Country sedan production for 1948 was limited with just 1,175 examples built. This car is one of only 41 known to survive.

How Peugeot Caused an Advertising Stampede
In this series, Squideo has examined the best ways to turn advertising content into gold. Now that we’ve broken down the eight key ingredients, it’s time to dive deep into some examples of stellar advertising. This week, the advert in question was picked by Squideo’s Account Director, Adam Shelton.
When asked why this Peugeot advert had become his favourite, Adam said: “It accomplished everything an advert is meant to. It’s memorable, it’s unique and it keeps the product front and centre. Plus the bit with the elephant is hilarious.”
Tumblr media
The Peugeot Roars
You don’t need to be a driver to have heard of Peugeot. You’ll have encountered this French brand from buying your first bicycle to equipping your kitchen. Peugeot was founded in 1810 – over 200 years’ ago – by the Peugeot family who retained majority shares in the automotive company until 2014. Peugeot manufactured a vast variety of products in its early years, from hand-held saws to pepper grinders.
Eventually they branched out into bicycle production, car manufacturing and motorcycle making. Amazingly, they still continue to make kitchen tools under Peugeot Saveurs. Cycles Peugeot and Peugeot Motorcycles are also still on the go, and they make vehicles for motor racing events under Peugeot Sport. Up until 1986, they even had their own cycling team which won ten titles at the Tour de France.
Like many car manufacturers, Peugeot have acquired other brands and ownership of this company has changed hands repeatedly. In the 20th century, Peugeot took over Hotchkiss, Chenard-Walcker, Citroën and Chrysler Europe. As of 2021, Peugeot is owned by Stellantis – a multinational automotive manufacturing corporation which was created after the merger of major American, French and Italian manufacturers. A member of the Peugeot family is part of Stellantis’ senior management, demonstrating the power and influence Peugeot has built and maintained since 1810.
Tumblr media
2 Fast 2 Peugeot
Created by Euro RSCG of Milan-Italy, The Sculptor was released in 2003 to critical acclaim – winning numerous international awards. The car promoted in the advert, the Peugeot 206, was released in 1998 as a replacement of the 205 model. Within ten years, the 206 had become Peugeot’s best-selling car.
The advert was so popular that fifteen years later the BBC show Top Gear recreated it in celebration of the Peugeot 206’s anniversary. On its twentieth anniversary, Peugeot also released a recreation of the advert with the Peugeot 208 replacing the 206. To accomplish this, several months were spent at Ajeenkya D Y Patil University in 2002 where engineers painstakingly converted the Hindustan Ambassador.
In the advert, a motorist turns his Ambassador – an iconic Indian car that started life as a Morris Oxford – into a Peugeot 206. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., who has since gone on to become the director of Netflix’s first Dutch film, The Sculptor is considered one of the best car adverts of all time.
According to the award-winning Creative Director Adrian Holmes:
“A film I’ve always loved is a commercial for the Peugeot 206 called ‘The Sculptor’, made by Euro RSCG Milan in 2002. You must know the one – the young Indian guy who gets an elephant to sit on his old jalopy (amongst other methods) so that it ends up looking like the car of his dreams. Everything about it – the story, the editing, the music, the casting – is simply frame perfect. Apart from anything else, it stands as a monument to the brave and imaginative client who said ‘yes’ to such a wonderful and daring piece of work.”
Peugeot Rides Again
The 206 went on to be Peugeot’s best-selling model of all time, and one of the most popular cars ever made. Like the product, the advert selling it also swept the award boards in 2003: winning at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
From the car’s release in 1998 to 2003, the year of The Sculptor’s release, sales of the Peugeot 206 increased by 146 percent. But why was The Sculptor such a big hit?
Tumblr media
Real Renovations
The protagonist of the advert starts out with a Hindustan Ambassador and ends up with a Peugeot 206: the car of his dreams. The audience's expectation, after seeing the Ambassador destroyed, is that a pristine Peugeot 206 would be rolled out at the end. But that doesn’t happen. This car is dented, pummelled, bashed… there’s nothing pristine about it. Yet the protagonist still gets the attention of everyone who sees his new (old) car.
The fact that this advert really turned a Hindustan Ambassador into a Peugeot 206 is part of the reason this advert became so memorable. If they’d used CGI or switched out the car, the advert would have been like any other that uses a product swap.
International Intrigue
The name Peugeot forms an instant connection to its heritage: the brand is undeniably French. Setting the advert in French countryside or on Parisian streets would be predictable. Instead, The Sculptor is set in an Indian city. Why? To show that the car belongs anyway. Can be desired by anyone. It has international appeal.
The setting is also the home of the Hindustan Ambassador, India’s most popular car which was manufactured from 1957 to 2014 and called the “King of Indian Roads.” Once it fell out of production, the car became wildly collectable – but eleven years earlier in 2003 they were still easy to come by. A popular everyday car; much like the Peugeot 206. Stylistically, however, they’re worlds apart which is what made this a great before and after choice. The 206 was meant to be a new design for a new millennium, leaving behind the boxy style of the 20th century.
Mood Music
The advert plays to the song Heaven Is A Place On Earth by Raja Mushtaq, later remixed as Husan by Bhangra Knights. This bhangra dance song ended up charting, made it on Now That’s What I Call Music! 55, and sold over 20 million copies. Bhangra dance music is a non-traditional Punjabi music originating in British-Asian communities. It first emerged in the 1970s, seeing a resurgence in the 2000s that Peugeot got ahead of with its music choice.
This upbeat song only briefly appears after the protagonist successfully converts his Hindustan Ambassador into the Peugeot 206 and the non-traditional bhangra music symbolises the successful alteration of the vehicle.
Content Worth Gold

about my money situation... (please read. I know it's long, but it's the last one today, I promise)
also I thought I might update you all about my 'cars' and the 'money situation' since I know I've posted before about only having 1, and stressing over keeping it running, and that having 2 might make it seem like I'm suddenly doing fantastically.
I have 2 now. My girlfriend has built up some savings over the years and was kind enough to let me borrow some money from her instead of from a predatory loan agency to buy a second. My concern was having a second car so that if anything happened to the first, I'd have something to drive (the area I'm in is extremely anti-pedestrian, and even then, I'm disabled and can't walk even a single block without stopping).
The "new" car however is used, of course. For $2500 I got a 2004 Chrysler Sebring GTC convertible. My rationale was that my main car- a 2006 Ford Focus ZX4 SE sedan - could be used as my daily driver, for emergency money making (D**rD*sh, anyone?), since it gets decent gas mileage and is extremely reliable, while the secondary car could be more... fun. So yes. I got a convertible lol.
The convertible needed a bit of work (all new struts, the AC system doesn't work, and the top struggles to come up, but it still functions), but most of that is done now. I have the rear struts and parts for the AC. The front struts have been installed. The back window came partially unglued while we had it, but we glued that back with little issue. After cleaning out vents and putting more freon in, the AC blows cold for the most part, but it clearly still has issues. I have a new convertible motor on the way just in case that is going bad, but it probably won't be installed until this one completely gives out.
All in all, I've probably spent about ~$4000 on the car now, which is as much as plenty of people were asking for convertibles that were just as bad off, so I don't think it was a terrible deal.
That being said, it is extremely hot in my area, and I've dried my funds for the moment on repairing the AC. My dad knows a guy who's willing to do it cheaply, but I don't have any means of paying them for the moment. I also have about $5000 on a credit card at the moment, plus ~$300 on another credit card, and ~$200 on Affirm. My dad asked me to pay his and my mother's ~$2200 overdue tax bills using my credit card and that sorely threw my money management out the window. I've been desperately trying to keep my cards under 40% use which is why they're spread across three sources now, but that extra $2200 (or 22% of my unsecured credit card) was just too much...
I expected to handle most of the repairs and other stuff while I waited for disability decision on my credit card, which has now fallen through due to that. That's why I'm still asking for money, even though I SEEM well off.
I'm not.
I have about $100/wk in groceries, $50/wk in gas (for driving, considering I don't D**rD*sh, which isn't always a guarantee), then about $730.79/mo in bills. My girlfriend is helping some with the bills, but it is... a lot. It is a lot to have to survive on with meager income (it's hard to make even $200 on D**rD*sh in a single week, and I can't physically do any jobs I'm qualified for at the moment, hence the disability claim).
This is why I say even a single dollar will help. because it will. That's a dollar I don't have to make. That's a dollar I don't have to gauge whether D*shing will make me money or lose me money due to the gas prices. THat's why commissions right now would be my LIFEBLOOD.
My girlfriend has gotten money from her father in the past (not much anymore, though), and gets money from the govt to go to school from the GI Bill but this won't last forever. In fact, I believe she may only have 1-2 more years of that. It *could* in theory cover a lot of what I have going on, but... I know what she has in savings, and the amount of money I'd need to crawl out of this debt hole would easily take a significant chunk of her money. And we might need that money in the future to make a down payment on a place to live, not to mention it would be really shitty to take a bunch of her money that she may need for emergency situations or purchases of her own....
So I really, really, really don't want to do that.
so if you were curious. that's why I am asking for money despite seeming well off. I seem well off. but I am not. I am not well off at all and I am scared and struggling.

1948 Chrysler Town and Country Sedan
The first Chrysler Town and Country was a wood-bodied, barrel-back sedan in the 1941 six-cylinder Royal line. Neither sedan nor station wagon, it had a fastback profile with twin hinged “barn doors” at the rear. Exactly 999 were built, 200 of them in six-passenger configuration and the rest with three bench seats to hold nine people. A similar lineup was continued into 1942, with nearly identical production despite the war-shortened model year.
The response was such that an expanded range of five body styles was planned for 1946. In the end, only a conventional trunk-back sedan and an eight-cylinder convertible coupe were built. Just 100 long-wheelbase eight-cylinder sedans were built, the rest being six-cylinder cars on the shorter Windsor wheelbase. The new-design second-series 1949 line dropped the T&C sedan, and for 1950 the model retreated to an eight-cylinder hardtop coupe with painted insert panels. Thereafter, the name “Town and Country” graced a long succession of Chrysler steel-bodied station wagons and minivans.
Total Chrysler Town and Country sedan production for 1948 was limited with just 1,175 examples built. Most wood-bodied cars were lost long ago, and according to Town and Country authority Donald Narus, this car is one of only 41 known to survive.

Say switch to beer out and we caught it but he drinks Miller lite because it tastes good and Budweiser won't change the taste and IPA is very bitter but it's good for you in some ways and doesn't give you fungus so putting out a nice IPA now from each company
But when we roll into town you guys are nervous and we distribute and we have tons of beer most of us huge courses huge Miller is huge the old Milwaukee is becoming huge again and perhaps Blue Ribbon is gigantic and it was gigantic and we're making most of it the Brewer admits he can't keep up at all and he was and he had stopped the other day because his factories were on hold because of all the idiots they had stopped it we moved them out in a few minutes and we started rolling and we had about 550 million cases in 20 minutes they were amazed I kept blowing it out now there's a giant giant demand for our beer globally everybody wants it because he was drinking it so he says trying to insult me so I guess we'll just let it ride and that's what he said
Well then it rip here this is disgusting he keeps pointing it out they just don't want to comply with anything but take it over tons of businesses were moving tons of factories but producing tons of stuff and we're retrieving a bunch of stuff we made so many light cycles it's not even funny brand new ones huge numbers by the way people got their converted ones and didn't like them that much because sometimes it over 200 they wobble a little because they're their old bikes and sometimes they're vibrate because the motor is not ours huge numbers of sales and they sold they'd sell their conversion people love it 200 miles an hour is faster than any of the sport bikes so the cruise around saying you want to race to practically every sport bike they see and the sport bikes are now buying the conversion kits huge huge numbers to them
Thor Freya
And I see what she goes through but he's in boss for a while this is my little niche and I've got conversions going on almost everything even cars we have this light car and it looks like a car it's got car tires and it is a chassis of virtually every compact car and even subcompact cars and most of them work the chassis depending there's a list of them online but really GM has like five Ford has like four Dodge has like three and Chrysler which is the same company has like four and all of them can convert easily into a light cycle car the reason you want to do this is for the performance of the drive system that I have modified from the light cycle and converted it into a car format it's different it runs different and it's connected differently it's like the first front wheel drive people look at it and can't figure it out and it is based on his drive it is intense this kid did a great great deal of work on inventing things he deserves a lot better treatment and these people won't do it they just sit here saying he has to get kidnapped so I'm going to come in here and beat the s*** out of these people and he says we must when they're breaking the law every law and getting rid of these people isn't going to change anything they're all competing they haven't in their area but really these people need to be they need to have a swift beat down we got that too and there's a whole bunch of reasons to give them a beat down but the car works great and he asked me to do it and we're looking at putting it on a whole bunch of cars and we did testing and it's rigorous we did millions and millions of miles and it doesn't fail and we tested and sent you so we're going ahead and we're going to do that and he says we should make an Indy car with it and we should make a stock car and we should make the the what do they call those circuit cars and small race cars out of it and take over the racing circuits and dump all of the other race car circuits that don't want to do it if they don't want to buy into it and you just buy everything around them and shut them down and we're going to do that this is an interesting concept of taking over and it's cheaper to make it's about $200 per car cheaper on a regular car and we're going to start putting the model out it's more fuel efficient by about 25% and it's 25% faster per horsepower that granted the electric engine motor with the generator is much better but these can be hooked up to that and in concert it creates a car that is about 10 times as fast per amount of energy output it's incredible he's quite the engineer we're using these vehicles everywhere we need to mass produce them we're starting now and hook up by crook he's going to get some money from this these people have to give him something for it or let something go through or we're going to be extremely mad
Zig Zag
Roman already but we get the point this is going to put it put it way over the top
Thor Freya
Thank you very much honey for a good performance and if you need any money let me know cuz I need some for the mission and it's not being taken seriously and I need to know why I hear it's not possible to do right now and say well we just sit down and seriously have a talk if it's not possible to do right now what are the real reasons
I now understand what you're saying he's sitting here everyone's pissed off why fight it it's because if you send them over there at the foreigners and minorities and more lock will actually start fighting and supposed to sit here so hopefully the announcement today makes a difference
Hera
Zues
I hope it does too it should is the market change in people's attitude and it's going to change all of the world and these f****** are going to go down everyone's looking at them like they need to die we understand it now they say he's under massive duress
Thor Freya
It is real I needed help down here for ages and finally I said this I should talk about it and I got what he's saying it's going to go down there it's already a mess we needed to go down there the scenario it's not down at and that's the problem and so I eat it out and it's working

Which light bulb is brighter for driving?
Dim fronts lights reduce your capability to judge ranges, differentiate colors as well as see threats in your peripheral vision. Exposure during the night during driving is a vital element. It is always much better to switch over to the better auto headlight light bulbs as a far better choice. Obtaining more installing bi led projector headlight in Chrysler 300c reviews on amazon. In halogen light bulb, a filament gone across by electric existing. The high resistance of the thin cord contrasted to the existing leads to the development of warm so that electrical energy converts into warm and also light. They are the earliest that exists in the vehicle light. For years, all fronts lights had a yellowish tint; today, it remains the original of many cars. The light bulbs are mounted on a lot of automobiles and took care of to prove their efficiency. The lights illumination of a standard halogen light bulb does not also come close to the led front lights conversion kit.
Tumblr media
You can expect regarding 3,000 lumens to cover a location of 90 square meters from HID fronts lights. In some cases the shade intensity of the light bulb can change and the bulb may burn brighter or come to be dimmer. They warm up fast and they are likewise budget-friendly. They are available in a variety of colors and also you can usually select from 7 various colors for your lights. Among the negative aspects of utilizing HID bulbs is that they are so bright that they can harm the vision of the cars and truck before you. LED mean light giving off diode and they have numerous benefits over standard halogen light bulbs. Led light is 200% even more extreme than halogen light. Led technology is long-lasting. An average LED bulb will certainly last for as much as 50,000 hours of usage. The typical halogen light bulb can not compete with these numbers. In unclear conditions, led headlight makes you drive much easier on approaching web traffic with no glaring light. You can conveniently slow down as well as drive at a sluggish speed to stay clear of crashes. If you are concerned about the degree of brightness due to this, you can have extra LED projectors mounted into the front lights. These will see to it that the beam of light is concentrated, not scattered. Led front lights is a greater quality of illumination as compared to the halogen light bulb one. This can result in illuminating a bigger location of the roadway in front of the lorry therefore making driving that much more comfortable. The led headlight have the capacity to last longer than the halogen bulbs. A customer can furthermore get LED lights for the within in addition to rear lighting. Switchback LED light bulbs also offer you a great look to match your HID when you utilize them as rear lights. There are many disputes over whether LED light is lawful in vehicle illumination. Be cautious in mounting those with high lumens (light outputs) led front lights conversion kit as it might create glow or would briefly blind other vehicle drivers. A lot of high-quality LEDs are designed to operate in reflector housing with a very similar beam pattern. Maybe you attempted LED's rather a long time ago when the innovation had actually not advanced as high as it is now.

Quote
New York has always attracted the wealthy and predatory, dating back at least to our most famous pirate, Captain Kidd. Coming here was seen as a sort of arrival, for individuals and businesses alike. Long a “headquarters town,” as early as 1901 New York was home to sixty-nine of the nation’s two hundred largest corporations. Their owners lined Fifth Avenue with their fairy-tale mansions—some of them later converted into museums or elegant stores—or filled luxury apartment houses such as the Dakota. They hired the most renowned architects to erect gigantic advertisements for their transformative, world-conquering enterprises, including many of the most memorable structures ever built in the city: Grand Central Terminal; the Chrysler, Woolworth, Empire State, and Seagram buildings, among others. Noxious as the old robber barons could be, they at least dropped vast amounts of money into the local economy in the form of property taxes and purchases in elite shops. They employed people in droves—small armies of domestics, vendors, and workers at all levels—to service their needs and businesses. They contributed to the city through their building and philanthropy—Rockefeller Center, Carnegie Hall, the Morgan Library, and the Frick Collection, to name just a few examples. The new rich infesting the city, by contrast, are barely here. They keep a low profile, often for good reason, and rarely stick around. They manufacture nothing and run nothing, for the most part, but live off fortunes either made by or purloined from other people—sometimes from entire nations. The New Yorker noted in 2016 that there is now a huge swath of Midtown Manhattan, from Fifth Avenue to Park Avenue, from 49th Street to 70th Street, where almost one apartment in three sits empty for at least ten months a year. New York today is not at home. Instead, it has joined London and Hong Kong as one of the most desirable cities in the world for “land banking,” where wealthy individuals from all over the planet scoop up prime real estate to hold as an investment, a pied-à-terre, a bolt-hole, a strongbox. For most of a decade now, like lava flowing inexorably from some deadly volcano, the residences of the superrich have moved east from the Time Warner Center to create Billionaires’ Row, the array of buildings on 57th Street and several adjoining streets and avenues that is already dominating much of the Manhattan skyline. These “supertall” skyscrapers are defined as buildings taller than 984 feet: One57, at 157 West 57th Street (1,004 feet); 432 Park Avenue (1,396 feet). Well on their way to being built: 53 West 53rd Street (1,050 feet), 111 West 57th Street (1,428 feet), and 217 West 57th Street (1,550 feet). Finished or not, many of the apartments were—at first—snapped up as soon as they went on the market. The Times used to tick off their record-setting sales in its Sunday real estate section, down to the absurdly exact dollar and cent: one recent lower-end example, $47,782,186.53! Nor are the records these sales set likely to remain for long. A triplex at the forthcoming 220 Central Park South will reportedly be sold for $200 million, and a four-story apartment at the same address is priced to move at $250 million. These would be the largest home sales ever recorded anywhere in the United States. Who spends this sort of money for an apartment? The buyers are listed as hedge fund managers, foreign and domestic; Russian oligarchs; Chinese apparel and airline magnates. And increasingly, to use a repeated Times term, a “mystery buyer,” often shielded by a limited liability company. This is not the benevolent “gentrification” that Michael Bloomberg seemed to have had in mind but something more in the tradition of the king’s hunting preserves, from which local peasants were banned even if they were starving and the king was far away. Or, to use a more urgent analogy, these areas are now the dead zones of New York, much like the growing oxygen-depleted dead zones of our oceans and lakes, polluted with pesticide runoff and deadly algae blooms.

The 1953 Thomas Special Coupe was the third of Chrysler's "Idea Cars" designed by Virgil Exner and built by Ghia in the 1950s.
Ultimately, the car never reached production, but Chrysler had six examples produced and Ghia liked the design so much it produced another 12 for itself.

NASA Space Laser Missions Map 16 Years of Ice Sheet Loss
NASA - ICESat-2 Mission patch. April 30, 2020 Using the most advanced Earth-observing laser instrument NASA has ever flown in space, scientists have made precise, detailed measurements of how the elevation of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have changed over 16 years. The results provide insights into how the polar ice sheets are changing, demonstrating definitively that small gains of ice in East Antarctica are dwarfed by massive losses in West Antarctica. The scientists found the net loss of ice from Antarctica, along with Greenland’s shrinking ice sheet, has been responsible for 0.55 inches (14 millimeters) of sea level rise between 2003 and 2019 – slightly less than a third of the total amount of sea level rise observed in the world’s oceans.

The findings come from NASA’s Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2), which launched in 2018 to make detailed global elevation measurements, including over Earth’s frozen regions. By comparing the recent data with measurements taken by the original ICESat from 2003 to 2009, researchers have generated a comprehensive portrait of the complexities of ice sheet change and insights about the future of Greenland and Antarctica. The study found that Greenland’s ice sheet lost an average of 200 gigatons of ice per year, and Antarctica’s ice sheet lost an average of 118 gigatons of ice per year. One gigaton of ice is enough to fill 400,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools or cover New York’s Central Park in ice more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) thick, reaching higher than the Chrysler Building. “If you watch a glacier or ice sheet for a month, or a year, you’re not going to learn much about what the climate is doing to it,” said Ben Smith, a glaciologist at the University of Washington and lead author of the new paper, published online in Science April 30. “We now have a 16-year span between ICESat and ICESat-2 and can be much more confident that the changes we’re seeing in the ice have to do with the long-term changes in the climate.” ICESat-2’s instrument is a laser altimeter, which sends 10,000 pulses of light a second down to Earth’s surface, and times how long it takes to return to the satellite – to within a billionth of a second. The instrument’s pulse rate allows for a dense map of measurement over the ice sheet; its high precision allows scientists to determine how much an ice sheet changes over a year to within an inch. The researchers took tracks of earlier ICESat measurements and overlaid the tracks of ICESat-2 measurements from 2019, and took data from the tens of millions of sites where the two data sets intersected. That gave them the elevation change, but to get to how much ice has been lost, the researchers developed a new model to convert volume change to mass change. The model calculated densities across the ice sheets to allow the total mass loss to be calculated. “These first results looking at land ice confirm the consensus from other research groups, but they also let us look at the details of change in individual glaciers and ice shelves at the same time,” said Tom Neumann, ICESat-2 project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
Image above: Using data from the ICESat and ICESat-2 laser altimeters, scientists precisely measured how much ice has been lost from ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland between 2003 and 2019. The Antarctic Peninsula, seen here, was one of the fastest changing regions of the continent. Image Credits: NASA/K. Ramsayer. In Antarctica, for example, the detailed measurements showed that the ice sheet is getting thicker in parts of the continent’s interior as a result of increased snowfall, according to the study. But the loss of ice from the continent’s margins, especially in West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula, far outweighs any gains in the interior. In those places, the loss is due to warming from the ocean. In Greenland, there was a significant amount of thinning of coastal glaciers, Smith said. The Kangerlussuaq and Jakobshavn glaciers, for example, have lost 14 to 20 ft (4 to 6 m) of elevation per year; the glacial basins have lost 16 gigatons per year and 22 gigatons per year, respectively. Warmer summer temperatures have melted ice from the surface of the glaciers and ice sheets, and in some basins the warmer ocean water erodes away the ice at their fronts. “The new analysis reveals the ice sheets’ response to changes in climate with unprecedented detail, revealing clues as to why and how the ice sheets are reacting the way they are,” said Alex Gardner, a glaciologist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, and co-author on the Science paper. The study also examined ice shelves – the floating masses of ice at the downstream end of glaciers. These ice shelves, which rise and fall with the tides, can be difficult to measure, said Helen Amanda Fricker, a glaciologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego, and co-author on the Science paper. Some of them have rough surfaces, with crevasses and ridges, but the precision and high resolution of ICESat-2 allows researchers to measure overall changes.

This is one of the first times that researchers have used laser altimetry to measure loss of the floating ice shelves around Antarctica simultaneously with loss of the continent’s ice sheet. The researchers found ice shelves are losing mass in West Antarctica, where many of the continent’s fastest-moving glaciers are located as well. Patterns of thinning over the ice shelves in West Antarctica show that Thwaites and Crosson ice shelves have thinned the most, an average of about 16 ft (5 m) and 10 ft (3 m) of ice per year, respectively. Ice that melts from ice shelves doesn’t raise sea levels, since it’s already floating – just like an ice cube already in a full cup of water doesn’t overflow the glass when it melts. But the ice shelves do provide stability for the glaciers and ice sheets behind them. “It’s like an architectural buttress that holds up a cathedral,” Fricker said. “The ice shelves hold the ice sheet up. If you take away the ice shelves, or even if you thin them, you’re reducing that buttressing force, so the grounded ice can flow faster.” For more information on ICESat-2, visit https://nasa.gov/icesat-2 or https://icesat-2.gsfc.nasa.gov Images (mentioned), Video (mentioned), Text, Credits: NASA/GSFC/Kate Ramsayer.
