Edited by V&A curators Oriole Cullen and Connie Karol Burks, a stunning survey of Gabrielle Chanel’s most notable designs from her 60 years in fashion
As one of the most successful fashion houses in existence, Chanel owes much to the templates first laid down by its founder, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883–1971). Some of her most celebrated designs, such as the two-piece suit, the little black dress, and the quilted handbag, remain in vogue to this day. Chanel designed first and foremost for herself; by creating clothes fit for an independent and active lifestyle, she anticipated the needs and wants of the modern woman.
This beautiful book showcases a stunning array of Chanel’s most notable designs from her 60 years in fashion, largely drawn from the collections of the Patrimoine de CHANEL, Paris, and the V&A. It examines the cut, construction, embellishment, and provenance of the ensembles, as well as the design themes and motifs Chanel returned to throughout her career. Newly commissioned photographs of the selected pieces by renowned fashion photographer Nicholas Alan Cope are accompanied by archival images, which together capture Chanel’s unique fashion world.
I love that she's badass but still very girlie. Like, she's not my style at all, in term of fashion. I'm no girlie. But I love that she can be very feminine, with all those fancy expensive outfits, and at the same time, quite intimidating and not taking any BS from anyone. She's strong and independant and is not afraid to put herself or her career first.
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
drawing a blank on that one, sorry!
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
If the show had continued they would have found a clue on her sister's current whereabouts. She's had a rather rocky adventure after she left home, but she's living a good life now. I haven't really figured out what happened but because I'm soft, she has to be alive and well, and there will be an emotional and happy family reunion.
as well as
one character i love seeing them interact with
Neal, obviously. They make a great couple! I think the reason why among all of Neal's girlfriends, I like Sara the most is because she sees right through him, doesn't take any of his conman act, but *also* accepts him for who he is.
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
Peter! The couple of scenes they have together (the one in the office when she's "dead" and the one in the car after they're back from the island) are so good! There's a genuine affection between them.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
Despite her abandonment issues and how badly she took Neal's disappearance, they got back together. They did get two kids, Conrad and Connie. They lived in London for a while, but they missed their old NY life. They had their best memories there. Their best friends, too. It didn't help that they'd visit the Burkes often, scratching that itch every time. So when Sara got a good opportunity to get back to the NY offices of Sterling & Bosch, she took it.
I'm down in bones of your casualties
You dig up demons like a sweet addiction
Feeding me fear so you can take control, you're gonna crumble, crumble
Mhm
Don't you see you're drowning in your gold?
Heavy eagle weighing down your throat
And now the cracks are breedin up your tower, you crumble, crumble
Mhm
Playin' God with that facade, won't get you your Camelot
Amen take it in the air
Payback for your wicked lies
Storm clouds rollin' in the high
Singes scorch the crimson sky
Amen take it in the air
Payback for your wicked lies!
Tick tock, tick tock, time is up
Big talk, big talk, I see it comin'
Comin' for ya
Just a little bit of sweet revenge
Gotta love a little punishment
Whoa ohhh oh oh ohh
It's comin' comin'
Just a little bit of sweet revenge
Gotta love a little punishment
Whoa ohhh oh oh ohh
It's comin' comin'!
The diamond chandeliers are crashing down
You hide from wreckage on your hands and knees
Feels good to see you beg and plead, as you stumble, stumble
Mhm
I watch you struggle with that turning tide
Drowning deep with that heavy pride
You know I won't be there to catch you, as you stumble, stumble
Playin' God with that facade, won't get you your Camelot
Amen take it in the air
Payback for your wicked lies
Storm clouds rollin' in the high
Singes scorch the crimson sky
Amen take it in the air
Payback for your wicked lies!
Tick tock, tick tock, time is up
Big talk, big talk, I see it comin'

Just a little bit of sweet revenge
Gotta love a little punishment
Whoa ohhh oh oh ohh

Don't ya hear it, don't ya hear it? (It's comin' comin')
I know it's comin (It's comin)

Tagged by lovely girlbloke @pavewoment to do a brother check in on what I’m reading!
Recently read: The Body Keeps the Score, informative to be sure, but definitely more editorial than I was expecting
Currently reading: several…Moby Dick, Dorothy Day: the world will be saved by beauty by Kate Hennessy (her youngest granddaughter, with Emily!), My Life with the Saints by Father James Martin, SJ (Jimmy!) and Trauma Stewardship by Laura van Dernoot Lipsky and Connie Burk. What a fun and varied bunch!
Coming up: after two months of waiting the library finally completed my purchase order of the Elephant 6 oral history book, Endless Endless, so I’m going to start that with Naomi :) , also hoping to maybe reread Slaughterhouse Five, and circle back to David Foster Wallace’s The Pale King (I got about 100 pages into it in the fall for a group read and kind of abandoned it)
Hmm I’ll tag @holdoncallfailed @evilhole @jerkstorecalling @punkluvr @adz and whoever else feels like sharing :D
Trauma Stewardship: An everyday guide to caring for self while caring for others by Laura Van Dernoot Lipsky and Connie Burk
After working in primarily entry level mental healthcare positions, I can't express how important it is for people to learn how to nurture themselves! In healthcare, there seems to be a constant need for repressing one's emotions as a result of keeping the client/situation as the priority. This book breaks down the 16 signs of trauma exposure responses individuals may cultivate as a result of working in the emotional taxing fields of social work. I will list below the qualities of people (This book includes interviews with professionals such as EMT's, environmentalist's, child welfare workers, etc.) who shared similar characteristics needed to maintain resiliency for their mental health's sake. The authors listed other methods to center oneself in addition. While I have come to realize healthcare is not going to be my career choice (or degree choice T.T) I appreciate the incredible coworkers I have had and the wisdom they have shared with me. This field has caused me to grow as a compassionate human being and the client's will always hold a special place in my heart:) For anybody currently in the field, please read this book and feel comforted by the stories of other professionals struggling along, regardless of the years spent supporting other's and/or their causes. We can't support others without supporting ourselves first.
P.S I can't remember if these are directly pulled from the text or paraphrased by me so sorryyyy:)
A sense of Personal Control
Stress resistant people perceive a connection between their own actions and how they feel; they believe in their own capacity to influence the course of their lives.
Pursuit of Personally Meaningful Tasks
They are present and engaged in our lives, and this helps them to be active not passive, during challenging times.
Healthy Lifestyle Choices
They show "decreased use or general avoidance of known dietary stimulants of refined white sugar, caffeine and nicotine; they seek out multiple periods of hard exercise each week; and they find time each day for a period of relaxation."
Social Support
They have relationships with others who can serve as a buffer in dealing with difficult situations creating space for inquiry.

Is the Buddwick Public Library an archival repository? [Part 2]
continued from part 1
Steven and Connie come to the realization that Buddy founded the public library
There is no doubt that Connie is right to say that Buddy "really did leave a mark on this town." I am reminded of how, after some debate, the U.S. Congress purchased books from Thomas Jefferson to replace the books destroyed when the British burned the Capitol in September 1814. This formed the foundation of the new Library of Congress collection, which grew over the years. Jefferson's books didn't last very long though. A fire in later December 1851 destroyed "nearly two thirds" of the over 6,000 volumes which Congress had purchased from him! In the case of Buddy, he seems to have gifted his books rather than making a government entity buy the books from him.

As viewers, we don't know, from a 11-minute episode, the status of Buddy's books in the library itself. One could speculate they are, like in some libraries, in a special collections. On the other hand, the crux of the episode is Steven finding a rare book, literally a journal written by Buddy himself, stashed under an ordinary library shelf, clearly misfiled. This begs the question of whether Buddy's books are within the library's general collection or if they are in a special area, a sort of mini-archives. That is something that fans would have to figure out by themselves, even possibly writing fan fictions about it if they were so inclined to do so. I may even write a story about it in the future.
Clearly, the Buddwick Public Library is a location for storage, but it is unclear how many items in the collections are kept for "safety or preservation," as the Wikitionary definition of the word "repository" states. We can guess there is a section for rare books and although the journal may have fallen off a cart accidentally, it almost seems it was deliberately put under that shelf for Steven to find or even to hide it from prying eyes. What if an earlier Steven hid the journal under there so that future Steven would find it? I wouldn't put that outside the realm of possibility. All theories, even bad ones, are possible here.
In the end, the Buddwick Public Library is a functioning public library, but it is not known how much effort is put into preserving information on a long-term basis, including books written by Buddwick. We do know that after the book was found, however, we know it became part of the library collection, implying that the library may have begun efforts to save rare books or at least organize them properly. If that is the case, then the Buddwick Public Library would be a repository in some sense, even if it isn't a typical archival repository.
Deception, the Diamonds, and the Truth: Steven Universe's family tree
Steven unsure what to think of his mom, as shown in the episode, "An Indirect Kiss" in Season 1
Steven Quartz Universe, the protagonist of my favorite animated series, Steven Universe, has a non-traditional family tree, although it is not affected by time travel and distortion as Philip Fry's tree is in Futurama. His family is unique but has some features of typical families. [1] Warning, that there are some spoilers about major plotlines in the show here, just a heads up.

Using various fandom pages, here is a rough chart I produced:
This chart leaves a lot of questions. For one, who are the parents of Greg's parents? They would be Steven's great-grandparents. Additionally, who are the parents of Doug and Priyanka? Who created Blue, White, Yellow, and Pink Diamond? Who are Andy's grandparents? And that's only the start. Technically, all four Diamonds are one entity, the Great Diamond Authority, but Rose/Pink is Steven's mother, who sadly died while giving birth to him, throwing the Crystal Gems (Steven's guardians) into a bit of turmoil. Due to this connection and the fact that White, Yellow, and Blue treated Rose/Pink as their child of sorts, they are basically Steven's grandparents, specifically his three grandmothers. Also, only a few of the couples on this chart are married, specifically the parents of Greg and Andy, while it is presumed that Doug and Priyanka, Connie's parents, are married. To be exact, Connie and Steven, former lovers Rose and Pearl, former lovers Rose and Greg are not married. Andy points this out rudely in the episode "Gem Harvest." There is another detail I need to talk about as well. The surname of Universe is one that Greg changed from Demayo. As such, Steven was born with the surname of Universe, and the middle name of Quartz. His full name, according to his fandom page, is Steven Quartz Cutie Pie DeMayo Diamond Universe.
The above chart misses a lot, however. Steven considers his guardians (Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst) to be his family, as he does with Connie, Lion, and his other Gem friends (Bismuth, Lapis, and Peridot) to be his extended family. As Steven's chosen family, as some people call it, they are definitely a part of his life, but with the chart in its current organization, the typical hereditary format, I'm not sure where to add them without creating confusion for the viewer. Perhaps if the chart had a different format, they could be included in their entirety. It also misses something else, the four beings considered his creations: Watermelon Stevens, Pumpkin, Cactus Steven, and Topiary Stevens. Since they come about from his DNA/Gem abilities, they can be considered his children. It's almost akin to artificial insemination, where, according to WebMD, a "doctor inserts sperm directly into a woman's cervix, fallopian tubes, or uterus."
Among other issues that complicate this is the fact of fusion, symbolic of relationships or friendships between two or more people. This almost completely operates outside the above-mentioned family tree, with a few exceptions: Steven and Connie form a fusion, while Steven and Greg form a fusion. Some people have shown them in a "fusion tree," while others put together a "fusion graph." Unfortunately, both are sorely out-of-date, with the fusion graph done three years ago. So, I made a new chart, with the Crystal Gems in the center, and not including Fusion Gems not tied to that core group. [2] Since Steven is half gem and half-Gem, he is a fusion himself!
This chart says a lot more about Steven's family and the connections they have together than the earlier one shown in this post.
[1] To create this tree, I used the Steven Universe, Greg Universe, Minor Characters, Andy Demayo, Rose Quartz, Pearl, Doug, Priyanka, Connie Maheswaran, White Diamond, Blue Diamond, and Yellow Diamond pages from the Steven Universe fandom site.
[2] This includes Bluebird Azurite, Rhodonite, Topaz, Lemon Jade, Topaz Chamber Guard, Crazy Lace Agate, Watermelon Tourmaline, Ruby, Hand Cluster, Giant Ruby, Fluorite, The Cluster, and Cluster Gems.
Steven Universe, vegetarianism, and media representation [Part 2]
youtube
Reprinted from my History Hermann WordPress blog and also on Wayback Machine. Originally published on Jan. 2. 2020.
The focus on Steven's issues is continued in "Prickly Pair," where Steven uses his new hobby, planting, as a form of therapy, connecting with his love of nature and life (another reason he is vegetarian). The Gems see this as clearly unhealthy, as he is naming plants after his friends likely a reference to the "stress free environment" (see up to 1:04 in the video above) created by Billy Rosewood (played by Judge Reinhold) in Beverly Hills Cop 2, and give him space, as he thinks he can solve all these problems himself, bumping through his teen years.
This doesn't work out, ultimately, as he forms a cactus monster who he treated like a therapist, which hurts his friends (or guardians as you could call them), Amethyst, Garnet, and Pearl, not only physically but emotionally as the monster blurts out his personal feelings about them. While the cactus monster, which Amethyst names Cactus Steven, leaves his house, blowing off the front face of it, similar to the damage it sustained during the battle with Blue Diamond in "Reunited," Steven is clearly in emotionally (and mentally) rocky state by the end of the episode. You could even say that Steven and Cactus Steven represent part of the cycles of abuse. The absence of his father, Greg, his girlfriend, Connie (I hope they don't break up), and others, is disturbing enough, as the feeling he can't talk to anyone about problems, likely suffering from depression and other mental problems. [5]
"Little Graduation" and "Prickly Pair" sets up an interesting set of episodes ahead, even if you think SUF isn't "kid-friendly" anymore (as the fan base is growing up) as Steven will have to come to a more balanced state of mind and body (as he is acting a bit contradictory right now) working out his serious problems, making it possible for him to control his new powers, realizing that he should change, just as everyone else is changing, something he hasn't completely done yet. This would be much better than forcing others to not change, which is not healthy at all! Whether he talks the Diamonds about this (oh no) or his "uncle" Andy, or someone else about his problems is anyone's guess. [6] This is nothing new as he had similar struggles as shown in episodes like "Mindful Education," and other times before that, but the fact that he has the power to hurt others is scary, so I'm excited to see what future SUF episodes will bring. Perhaps Steven should take the advice he told Lars back in Season 5 to heart, although he may not.
[1] At the same time, however, the article listed racial stereotype Apu in The Simpsons, Bobby in King of the Hill, Velma Dinkley in Scooby-Doo, Draculaura in Monster High, Doug Funnie from Doug, Heffer in Rocko's Modern Life; Dil, Chuckie, and Susie in Rugrats, Pac-Man, Eliza Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys, Popeye, as some of the greatest "vegan cartoon characters." So, he got Pearl wrong, but perhaps he got these others right.
[2] Allyson Koerner, for instance, lists Lisa along with Monroe in Grimm, Phoebe Buffay in Friends, Angela Martin in The Office, Sara Sidle in CSI, and Temperance Brennan in Bones. Others list Hazel Grace Lancaster in The Fault in Our Stars, Rachel Berry in Glee, Phoebe Buffay in Friends, Angela Martin in The Office, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Britta Perry in Community, Phoebe Halliwell in Charmed, Topanga Lawrence in Boy Meets World, and Todd Ingram in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, alongside Lisa as vegan/vegetarian characters. Kristen Martin, on the other hand, notes five fictional vegetarians who "defy stereotypes" while Jamie Gerber explains various superheroes and villains who are vegetarian (Todd Ingram, Damian Wayne, Iron Fist, Connor Hawke, Bruce Banner, Magneto, Zatanna, Scarlet Witch, Superman, Kitty Pryde, Ozymandias, Beast Boy, Karolina Dean, Animal Man, and Wonder Woman).
[3] Some on My Anime List have claimed that Rei Ayanami in Evangelion, Taikoubou from Houshin Engi, herbivores in Monster Musume, a vegetarian elf in Isekai Shokudou, Nadia in Fushigi no Umi no Nadia, characters in Nichibros, Denpa Onna, Kemono Friends, Happy Happy Clover, Hamtaro, and Shirokuma Cafe, the latter three only if animal characters count, along with the Circumstances of a Vegetarian Child Wherewolf.
[4] Some fans adored Shep and loved the representation, while others didn't get their gender and thought Shep was transgender (there's no indication that is true), or hated Shep for some reason, the latter falling into the category of "annoying fans."
[5] I think its worth quoting the psychological analysis of Steven by one fan here, as it says more than I could put forward:
What is happening to Steven right now is a consequence of three situations:
-Being a half gem.
-Being adolescent.
-Trying to carry the weight of other people problems in your back
Why you ask? in adolescence, you try to wonder who you are, what you want to be in the future. And sometimes that bring negative emotions like angriness and confusion.
Before Steven Universe Future, his reason to be was to be a hero, helping others. Now, that reason is partly gone because the worst part of the conflict is over, and even when he still wants to help people, he looks at the lifes of other humans and starts to wonder what else could be.
Thats it because as a crystal gem, fighting and helping comes as something natural; and in the context of their long life spans this objective doesnt seems to change much. In the counterpart, humans tend to change life perspective more frequently because we live less, and our fragility doesnt makes us want to fight intergalactic conflicts (instead, we choose to share with others, get jobs, and try to enjoy life).
In the initial part of the show, things seems "inverted" because humans gave Steven a sense of continuity ("i want this to stay the same"), and gems a sense of something that needs to be changed ("i want this to be different"). When we reach SUF, humans are changing and gems are remaining the same (mainly enemies), so Steven starts to be greatly frustrated.
He doesnt wants to recognize this, clearly, because he is the person that "helps", not the one that needs to be helped (that would mean he is a burden to others). So, his emotions (anger and confussion, normal for adolescence) start to emerge as unstable powers, which causes a mayhem so big that Steven has to begin to recognize his emotions.
PD: So...if you have superpowers and feel like this...go therapy.
[6] Some fans hope Steven lies on a bed at the end of the series and talks to a therapist, while others just say he needs "serious therapy."
Update:
I am so glad to get one positive comment on /r/stevenuniverse, which makes me smile. I am glad to see it.
