Dauntless Matchmaker Part 2
Danny knew that his strange new boss was rich. He figured that much out by the overly priced suit and the wad of cash, but when he followed him into an Uber, he never thought he would wind up at the Waynes.
Everyone knew who the Waynes were. Danny personally thought it was no exaggeration when people called Bruce Wayne the Prince of Gotham.
He thought it fit the lovable man far more than the title of White Knight. It wasn't that Bruce didn't do the most out of all the ultra-rich to help the city, but rather, it mirrored the Dark Knight too much.
Danny thinks Bruce Wayne and Batman were too different to be compared like that. At least Mr. Wayne is real.
"Welcome home, Master Damian." The butler said as soon as the two walked through the door. His intrigued eyes slowly glanced at Danny, causing the teenager to stand straighter. "And who might our guest be?"
"I believed he was here for Drake." The young boy- apparently named Damian, fibs. Danny is a little impressed that he can sound so uncaring about what is happening despite being the whole reason he is here.
Danny knows that his job is to fool the butler and act like he isn't very aware of Damian. He offers the man his best smile. "Yeah, I came to see Tom. "
The older gentleman raises a brow while Damian shoots him a look of utter venom. Danny fights the urge to cower underneath the boy's displeasure. That is one nasty scowl the boy had.
"I am afraid Master Tim, is currently unavailable in his room"
Aw, crude, he said the wrong name. "Um, I know he said he needed a few minutes to get ready, but I was allowed to go up to his room. I'm sorry, sir I'm a little nervous."
"I see," The other says carefully before sharing a look with Damian. There is a moment where the two just stare at each other, and after a few small hand signs- sign language, maybe?- the butler clears his throat.
"That's quite alright, young man. You may go to Master Tim's room. It's up the main stairway on the third level, fifth door on the right."
Danny practically ran to the stairs, throwing a quick "Thank you, sir!" as he scurried away from the Butler and his boss. The boy still looked greatly displeased with his performance.
He prays he gets better at it once he speaks with Tom-er Tim and gets their story straight. Curious, He glances around, taking in the tasteful night pictures of Gotham City and the scattered few statues.
His breath catches when he sees a large frame photo of a man lying on an old couch looking into the far distance, his smile curving with mischievous glee and the sunlight reflecting the blue of his eyes.
There is a background of an old library, but the sun streaming through the window drapes him with a glow that makes the other man seem otherworldly.
It feels like it should be a painting, but it is so clearly a photograph that Danny has half a mind to wonder if someone who looked like that could possibly be real.
"Wow." He breathes, stepping closer to the frame.
"Wow, yourself." A gruff voice suddenly says, making Danny jump. Whirling around, he finds a boy about his age leaning on the doorframe.
It takes Danny a moment to realize that he is the subject of the art he was just admiring. But while the teenager in the photo seemed like a visiting angel, draped gracefully put together the teenager before him is, in a slight word, a mess.
He was wearing an oversized, fluffy, red open bathrobe. He seemed to only bother to slip on some baggy sweatpants and one sock. His hair didn't seem to have been combed in days, and there were dreadful bags underneath his eyes.
Despite that, Danny felt his heart flutter slightly when he made eye contact with the other.
"Who are you?" The stranger asks, voice a soft mutter.
"Um...I'm looking for Tim?"
"You found him." There is a half smile, but it falls quickly as the boy's demeanor seems to grow sad. Welp, his boss did say he was recently heartbroken.
"Oh great! I was told by Damian to do this when I found you." He places his hand on the wall, knocking six times, pausing for a few seconds, then knocking four.
Tim's face flashes through emotions faster than Danny can understand before the other teens' eyes water. That's all the warning he gets just as Tim bursts into tears.
He has no idea what's happening, but Danny's protective core has him rushing forward to bring the sobbing boy into his arms. He fumbles for a few seconds, unsure if it's welcome, until Tim melts into him, sobbing softly into his chest.
"It's okay. Shh. Shhhh. It's alright, everything will be alright. Why don't we head to your room?"
"Okay," The other whimpers. Danny helps him to his room, trying his best to offer as much support as possible. He is just starting to wonder if he should offer to get him some water or something when Tim kicks the door close, and the tears are all gone.
"Alright, we managed to fool Alfred. He was watching from the stairway," Tim whispers, leaning in close to Danny's face. He gave the startled half-ghost a sneer. "Now, who are you, and why did Damian send you to be my fake boyfriend?"
"Wait, you guys have a code for fake dating? That's what that was?"
"That's not important. I want to know what your objective is."
Danny tells him everything that Damian has told him since finding him. It's only been a few hours since he was fired and since he was taken by Damian.
Tim took it all in without much emotion.
"So you're here as my pity date to get Alfred to leave me alone? And was the Demon Brat the one to hire you? A likely story."
"No, I swear everything I've said is true."
"Oh, and I bet Batman is going to come out of the closet, too," The other said, rolling his eyes.
Danny frowns. "Batman isn't real."
At once, Tim's entire body seemed to have frozen. He blinks slowly, almost as if he is delayed in the reaction. "What did you just say?"
"Batman isn't real," Danny repeats slower, suddenly afraid for Tim's mental health. Next thing he knows, Tim will say the tooth fairy is real.
"Yes, he is."
"No, that's what the government wants you to think so they can hunt him down."
Tim blicks even slower before a blush starts to climb along his cheekbones. He reaches up to play with the hair at the back of his neck. "If that's true, then what is Batman really?"
"A ghost," Danny says confidently and Tim's face grows even redder. It's....endearing.
"You're weird," Tim says, looking away. His gaze lands on a hanging mirror, seemingly taken aback by his reflection. "Oh, I haven't showered in a few days, have I? Do you mind?"
Danny shakes his head, smiling. "No, go ahead. "
Noehter notices the small boy who moves away from Tim's door. And if that boy happened to be pumping his fist into the air in celebration well, that's no one business but Damian's

Close fitting top with elbow length sleeves that is fairly tight fitting but allow room for movement. It is a kind-of-faded saffron color similar to the breast color of the Fenghuang. Over which she wears her leather and metal armor. Then over that, layers of very thin (almost diaphanous cloth) that are very loose fitting so it is easy to slip out of or just shuck off when needed. That builds up in colors until the outer layer where the skirt section splits off into separated 'tails' of colors. That way, in terms of movement and flow, the clothing picks up the slightest breeze and floats. Creating the illusion of effortless gliding and flight while allowing the character's movement with her clothes to punctuate her body language as she herself moves. The idea being that just the act of movement portrays elegance and effortless poise. When Zhou Chen moves with purpose all the outer layers will immediately flows behind her. Also heightening the impression of a hunting bird striking at its target. The robes are made of two layers of thicker material that doesn’t have the same flow to it. The upper layer would be smaller than the lower layer to create a two-tone color effect. The robe could be belted at the waist. It is form-fitting so that it contours to the body down to the waist. The upper section would be held in place by the armor over the top. As opposed to Zhou Zhen who would have the armor underneath the robe and the skirt of the robes flared somewhat so that when Zhou Chen moves it forms something of a sem-circle around his/her calves. In terms of color maybe the robes for Zhou Chen could have the lower layer the same blue as the second and fourth tail plumage on a Fenghuang with the upper layer the blue/gray/green of the outer feathers in the wings.
Hoodie, t-shirt, jeans, high top sneakers
Equipment:
Items:
Weapons: Great Sword, bojutsu bo staff, nunchucks, long swords, daggers, short sword, sai, escrima sticks, broadsword, tonfa, magical composite bow, & spear

Leather and metal medium class armor
Plated chainmail military armor with helmet with Phoenix firebird and lightning bird feathers (based on the helmet of her patron Sun Wukong the Monkey King)

It's kind of wild to me. I know Nintendo is aware they're making a kids' game with Splatoon and even with their mobile apps apps, while they're not above predatory behavior, they keep it to a minimum and will add parental warnings about in-app purchases etc... but Splatoon 3 is kind of a glimpse into what old online multiplayer experiences used to be like. It's not perfect, with the rank-based matchmaking, lack of voice chat (no complaints on that one tbh), no offline play with bots for the main gamemode, it has a battle pass in the form of the catalog (luckily not split into, like, free vs premium) etc, but... yeah. It's designed to thrive more on its own merits than it is coercing you to play. I'm a fan of online experiences for the most part, but I haven't found one I've felt like sticking with since, like, 2014 because past that point, mechanics that were designed to encourage you to play at least once a day started to be geared more towards making you (me, at least) feel like you were gonna miss out on something important if you missed even one day. What would inevitably happen is my autistic ass would feel too pressured to play and then, just one day, not be able to get past my anxiety about opening the game, skip playing it that day, and then literally never open it again. This has been an ongoing cycle with basically every online game I've tried since Overwatch (yes I know that was 2016, that was the first AAA game I remember trying that didn't even have a server select screen). And I'm not talking all games with toxic communities, or that are barely even fun if you ignore the social/competitive aspect. I'm talking things like Dauntless, which was FUN, especially with friends, and even still with strangers. And I mean yeah, of course it was, it was a free to play monster hunter clone. But I missed 2 days one time which meant I'd never earn enough points for a certain pirate outfit and then gave up trying and, yep, never looked back.
Meanwhile Splatoon 3 is over here, not having a premium currency (which even $60-90 games are having for some reason these days), lets you buy nearly any outfit in the game, even if it's not currently available at the store, so long as you see another player wearing it, with the exception of things like amiibo outfits or certain splatoon 2 transfers.
Like... It makes me think of games like Halo on Xbox 360 where yeah there were things unlocked through gitting gud at online play but there was plenty of ways to customize if you exclusively played offline in your living room with the neighbors and your older brother who always somehow got to the spartan laser first and you ignored the deathmatch rules because someone figured out how to play soccer with the tanks. AND LIKE, EVEN THAT! You can't do it on one device in Splatoon, but it supports play for 8 people through local wireless. You can easily have "matches" with your friends irl where nobody can make you take the game's rules seriously. It's not quite the same but it's not... gone. It's refreshing to see a game like this where I don't feel pressured to keep playing just because that's the only way to "keep up" with some arbitrary internal standard, I keep playing because I just... want to. Because the game is fun and the world's interesting and dynamic and the characters we get to interact with are delightful and that's enough to make it worth coming back to.

"Multiplayer games require a healthy player base to survive and grow," says Psyonix's Davis.
Best cross platform games 2020 driver#
"We were confident that cross-play was going to be a big driver of viral growth and we built our services in an agnostic way." Connecting players "Epic worked closely with all of the platform partners to achieve this," Dyl says.
Best cross platform games 2020 full#
Many titles have experimented with limited forms of cross-play, but the addition of cross-play support on PlayStation 4 in September 2018 made Fortnite the first game to achieve full cross-play functionality between mobile, personal computers, and all three major consoles. This ability to play between platforms, specifically when it comes to consoles, was long held to be an important, yet difficult-to-achieve, feature. The leap in engagement and impact on the bottom line brought on by cross-play enables developers to keep creating new social and live content for players to enjoy.Ĭross-players ended up playing Fortnite about 570% more on average than non cross-players "What that clearly tells us is that people are playing with their friends across platforms as part of their normal monthly play cycles," says Chris Dyl, general manager of Epic Online Services. That increased engagement has a big impact on monetization, with Epic Games finding that the average monthly revenue-per-user who cross-played Fortnite was 365% higher than non cross-players. Those cross-players ended up playing Fortnite about 570% more on average than non cross-players, playing many more days every month than non cross-players.ĭuring each day in June 2020, 44% of Fortnite players cross-played on average and players that cross-played spent on average 1.5 hours longer playing than those that did not cross-play. An Epic Games analysis of play from March to June 2020 found that more than 60% of Fortnite players partied up with someone from another platform to cross-play. The importance of cross-play is also highlighted by Fortnite, whose track record illustrates the impact that making it easy to play with friends has on engagement.Īs of June 2020, 18.3% of the Fortnite user base has played on multiple devices. "It's not about which system is better, it's about making friends, and being able to play with friends" Fortnite by the numbers It's not about which system is better, it's about making friends, and being able to play with friends.' " "As one Slayer on Reddit said it: 'This is why cross-play is so important in this modern age of gaming. Players who were previously unable to connect with their friends are now able to play games together. "Player feedback has also been incredibly positive. "Over 60% of games played feature at least two different platforms, and more than 80% of those games are played with friends," he says. Nick Clifford, director of marketing for Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs, calls cross-play a pillar of the game's community. Making every friend accessible to you, even if they're playing on a different platform, is a huge improvement to the user experience." Rocket League went cross-platform in 2019 (Image courtesy of Psyonix) You might stop playing a game entirely without an online friend to play with. "And it's so much easier to play with friends when you don't have to worry about who owns what device or console. "Cross-play has a direct and meaningful impact on matchmaking speed and quality for online games," says Corey Davis, co-studio head at Psyonix. In 2020, as the game celebrated its five-year anniversary, Psyonix revealed that Rocket League continues to see record levels of engagement, with more than five billion matches played since launch. In 2019, it rolled out full cross-platform play between PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Take, for example, Psyonix's Rocket League. Best cross platform games 2020 Pc#
This hot new trend in gaming is called "cross-play," meaning support for playing together in a single game session that might span different game consoles, PC storefronts, and smartphones. Playing together with friends is a key ingredient in the success of many multiplayer games, from Rocket League to Fortnite, to Dauntless.įor many people, playing together with all of their friends is only possible if games support cross-platform play between all of the major platforms that their friends own.

thoughts on dauntless so far:
full character customization was unexpected, pretty cool.
Slayers™
how do you run
the graphics are less realistic than monster hunter yet somehow it lags way more
less realistic graphics aren't a negative though, it looks pretty cool
ive been trying to join a game for 7 minutes now and it's still on the matchmaking screen
current rating: ehhhh 6/10? unless the lag and matchmaking issues go away it's probably gonna stay like that.

Chapter 8: Second Chances
Chapter summary: Aftermaths of the Wolf’s escape & two painfully, oblivious pining idiots.
Warnings: mention of stitches, old scars. (3502 words)
Tumblr media
28 October 2019, 2330 "Alexis" and "Alex" | Codename Aces CIA with SAS and Urzik militia Sakhra, Urzikstan
"Stop moving," Alia grumbled exasperatedly for the fifth time. Her nimble fingers were supposed to make stitching up Alexis' gnarly forehead gash easy—if she could stay still. Then again, nobody could sit still through that without anaesthetic.
Begging for a distraction, Alexis' teeth scraped against her pale lips and her fingernails subconsciously dup deeper into Farah's arm with every stitch.
"I don't know why you do this without painkillers," Alia mumbled absentmindedly, every movement meticulous. It went unanswered, for Alexis refused to supply the 16-year-old with more horror. A few more stitches later, the young girl leaned back and smiled.
Thank Heavens. High pain tolerance, sure, but needles... Alexis was wise enough to stay far away.
Alexis' impatiently patted the medical gauze, nodding at the decent patch-up. Of course the Marines had professional medics on deck, but when Alexis awoke, she felt responsible for Alia's red-rimmed eyes and loud sniffles. So, pain be damned.
Alia scowled, swatting her nosy hand, "No! Do you want an infection?"
"I am older than you," Alexis reminded.
"Yes. More stupid too."
Bewildered, her neck craned towards Farah, jaw-slacked at the commander's blatant shrug in agreement. Overwhelmed by the thunderous support, "This is a mutiny of some sorts..."
"Uh-oh, your boyfriend is coming," the young girl loudly announced. Her accusation reeled stares from closer bystanders.
Heat found its way to Alexis' cheeks, spreading under Farah and Alia's teasing grins. Dizziness soon trickled in, forcing her to blink rapidly in an attempt to concentrate past the nasty headache. "Alex is not my boyfriend."
"Did I say it was Alex?"
Farah huffed, bumping fists with the younger. The conniving duo displayed megawatt smiles when Alex and Kyle came into hearing distances. Holding a box of ration packs, Kyle gestured for them to take their pick. That knocked their smugness off.
Alex plopped beside her, eating out of his rations. "Tell me you feel better," he more than demanded, giving her battered state a once-over. His eyes lingered on her forehead.
"Am I supposed to lie?"
A shadow flickered past his face, "Should I bench you?"
"Yes, if you wish to die in your sleep," her quick movements to snatch away his wristwatch communicator intensified the pain. "Although blunt force trauma is not as deadly as this headache."
"Crack another joke and I'll deliver you to Price," Alex threatened at her lightheartedness. Though his menace soon faltered at her radiant grin.
"Boss is not in a good mood," Kyle chimed in.
"Mutiny..." Alexis mumbled. "Fine, no more jokes about concussions."
The group chatted about their game plan for tomorrow when a rude growling stomach sounded. It certainly didn't go unnoticed by Alex, who willingly gave up his rations. Packaged pasta had never tasted better, she mumbled gratefully, "Have I ever told you how amazing you are?"
Alex laughed, "Now I know you hit your head too hard."
"Would you be open to the idea of getting matching injuries?"
"Are you flirting with me?"
"No, it's just in season," Alexis shook her head, bemused. "Shut up and eat your veggies, you're giving me another headache."
The scorching look of triumph was clear in Farah and Alia's expressions and for the same reason, she purposefully evaded their eyes.
"I thought the CIA frowned upon dating in the circle?" Kyle asked casually.
The unexpectable question forced her to choke, coughing loud enough to render someone patting her back. Alexis flushed at his concern, aware of the stutter in his pats. Both CIA agents were red, and boy, were Farah and Alia having a field day.
Alexis prayed her face was the usual controlled indifference. This wasn't the first time someone mislabelled their friendship, so why was this suddenly a big deal? "Yup. They hate it."
Kyle's lips formed an 'o' upon realisation, "Sorry, I thought you two were..."
Alex cleared his throat, "That's a popular opinion."
"Maybe everybody has a point. You did call her baby–" Alia cheekily added.
You little...
Alexis gently slapped a hurried palm against her mouth, muffling the jocular giggles from the young woman. It didn't stop her from cheekily winking at the group. Other than the two in cynosure, the others wore matching grins.
Perhaps they were playing matchmakers, but right now, her priority was to dig herself a hole.
From the unreadable look on Alex's face, he felt the same. When Alia tried to wrestle out of her grips, she thought the reddish hue on his face was a figment of her imagination. Yet if it wasn't, he sure didn't spare her the glory with this knowledge, as his head swiftly lowered to observe the hardwood floor panels.
Witnessing him this taciturn was a rare sight. Before she could entertain her illusions that maybe her friends were onto something, Price yelled for Kyle.
The tension in the air snapped.
"Get some rest. We need energy to catch the Wolf tomorrow," Farah gave a friendly side hug, saving Alex from Alia's nagging reminders about her stitches. He replied with a salute.
And then there were two.
"She's awfully like you," Alex smiled. Spitfire personality, dauntless and stubborn.
"Hopefully not, I'm a horrible person," she joked wearily, eyes losing in a battle against the slurry languor that washed over her. Coupled with the splitting headache, she wrangled between climbing upstairs to find a bed or staying here. The latter almost won until she was hoisted up.
"Don't bother, you're not walking," came Alex's reply and she obliged. When she reopened her eyes, Alex had already sat her down a bed to unlace her boots. She carelessly slithered her sweaty top off her skin.
They squeezed into a tightly-confined shower, sighing in bliss as warm cascades of water enveloped them, splashing the warfare away. Her arms looped contentedly around Alex's neck as he started to wash her blood-crusted hair, careful to shield her head wound.
"Hi," Alex wore a suspicious smile.
She sighed, "Here we go."
"Damn right. You have an immaculate talent for making people worried."
"Why thank you..."
Goosebumps raised as he silkened down her arms, tracing the red streaks clearly shaped from her nails. The way his dark eyes fastened on her made her heartstrings twitch nervously, "You could have died."
She laughed humourlessly. "You think too little of me."
"I'm serious, never do that again. You run into anything you can't handle..."
"I had him under control," she retorted.
"Clearly not enough."
"The bastard got to me. My fault, okay? I messed up. I don't need another reminder," she snapped, and the hands in her hair stopped. "Shit, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that."
"Sure you did," he nodded, not in the slightest offended. The fact that someone managed to one-up her caught his attention instead, "What did he say?"
Now Alexis suspected he could read minds. "Why did you think he said something?"
"Call it a hunch."
Alexis sighed, not fond to revisit her failure. "Alex..."
That was her warning, and he took it. "Just saying, I've never seen Price that worried."
She closed her eyes and shook her head dismissively, "He's just annoyed he'll have to answer to Maddox and Forbes. I'm a prized possession."
The cubicle echoed with their laughs.
Alex worked past the scars that littered her body, leaving trails of soap bubbles. He could pinpoint them with his eyes closed, yet with today's new additions, he had more to commit to memory. His thumb brushed over a spot on her upper right thigh, smirking at the slight shudder he induced but more so at the memory.
Was she nervous?
Hearing Alexis' hoarse voice confirmed his suspicions, "Remember this?"
"'course, you took a bullet for me," Alex said, still glazing over the raised bump.
August 2016, Brazil. 30 grand bounty over their heads. They played a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the entire city. A mercenary almost tore through his kneecaps until she knocked him out of the line of fire.
A charming smirk reappeared, "Few things say "I love you" like a bullet to a non-essential area."
She snorted, punching his chest. Cloudy mist floated around them, the water was too hot, almost scorching. Or maybe it was his warmth, she guessed. Her mind was foggy, only thinking how much endurance she had to not bask in the feeling of his coarse hands.
Then again, she was a soldier. Willpower was all she got.
Maybe not, her hormones decided. As hard as she tried to toss the raunchy thoughts, Alex made it difficult. Especially his arms... she was a real sucker for strong arms. The temperature was sweltering and with their bare bodies practically pressed together was not aiding.
"Switch," was all she said before she forcefully flipped them, leaving her under the running water—hoping it would clear her mind. Hasty fingers weaved in his wet hair, her turn to bathe him.
"Nasty scar," she picked up their conversation, "Scares people away."
"Maybe you should revaluate your definitions of a partner," Alex scoffed, "Scars are god damn sexy."
"In theory, I must be sexy as hell."
Hm. You have no idea.
The bullet scrap on her arm healed nicely by now—still an open wound, though it no longer hurt when she raised her arms. Useful to know, as she foamed his hair. Her gaze traced the numerous tattoos across Alex's body, eventually landing on his chest.
Her favourite tattoo of his—a butterfly.
Butterflies are the universe's proof that second chances exist, this stuck with her ever since she read that somewhere in a digest.
A similar tattoo rested along the sides of her ribcage, accompanied by an eye on top of it. The idea struck her when she finally made Lieutenant. It felt symbolic, a parting gift to her old life.
She always had a sneaking suspicion Alex wanted a matching tattoo but was too afraid or embarrassed to say it. He'd chat her ears off about parallel tattoos, as if she didn't pick up on it. So it was no surprise when one day, he suddenly showed up with a butterfly stuck on his chest.
It was a sweet gesture and thus made her way more resolute to not jeopardise their friendship. Tattoos were sacred to a man like Alex, who never stood a chance against Command. He'd make sure to find something he loved in every location he went, and inked it. His way of establishing control over his job—by remembering parts of the good.
Her finger skimmed past his butterfly before grabbing the showerhead to drown his hair clean. They were two people engrossed in good memories among warfare. And it felt liberating.
That was until she noticed he was looking at the prominent area on her chest.
Burnt flesh, the size of his palms, staring back at them.
The entire atmosphere shifted. A shiver of glacial magnitude rushed from her toes and her heart sank. The scar's jaggedness made her feel even more self-conscious.
Hot poker on her skin, an iron branding from the mob. If she closed her eyes, she could envision the exact scene. Fear not, if the mental baggage wasn't enough, there was a physical one.
"You deserve the best, you know that?" She didn't know which irked her more, the sympathy in his tone, or that he placed her on a pedestal.
I'm damaged goods, the thought fed her demons. So why do I deserve the best?
She peered at the man in front of her, every word earnest. He'd say it a million times and yet she wouldn't believe him.
Perhaps it was the head injury or hormones, but her eyes soon welled up with tears. Within seconds, what started out as small sniffs transformed into full streaks of tears. The tears blended into the stream of falling water but it was unmistakable.
The sight broke Alex's heart. Shattered it, really.
Silently, Alex switched off the faucet and dressed her. Every step jerked new tears that stained his bareback. At her quiet sobs, he berated what an idiot he was for reminding her.
The contact of soft mattress made her flinch. With tear-stained eyes, she gaped at the man who Omar Sulaman promised to kill and it almost made her whimper pathetically.
The malice thoughts stopped whispering when warm touch on her face descended her back to reality.
Alex.
"Yeah?" She hadn't realised she said it out loud.
"Stay with me," she implored. His head was already nodding, but it didn't satisfy her.
A hand shot out anxiously, "No, not this. You can't ever die on me." Her sudden request puzzled him. "Promise me."
"I promise," he said. "What happened, Alexan– Alexis?" Her birth name sat heavily on the tip of his tongue, almost escaping in his concern.
Over time, she'd built a reasonable resilience from Alex's relentless questionings, yet today her defenses lowered. "Back there... He said he'd kill you, he'll make me watch," she swallowed the rising bile. "And I let him go... Fuck."
Alexis felt like an utter failure. Not only did she fail to extract information about the stolen gas, but more people would suffer as a result of the Wolf's escape.
Losing the usual silver lining from her interrogations made her dangerously close to spiral out of control. In her mind, she unjustly tortured a man. And it was vile—even if that man was Omar Sulaman. Now, she found the line between her and her torturers blurred.
Though she didn't specify, Alex placed two and two together. "The Wolf?"
She merely nodded, still gripping his arm painfully like he'd slip away. The desperation her pleads carried haunted him.
"I'm going to fucking kill him," He saw red, only able to suppress his anger by making this promise. Without hesitation, he levelled their faces together, mumbling reassurance of I'm not going anywhere.
In the moonlight, Alex could still see the faint tint of pink that stained her nose—he compared it to the pink chrysanthemums he saw earlier today. How could anyone still look this enchanting while sobbing was a mystery to him, though he was staring right at the answer.
She never ceased to amaze him.
"I'm with you, okay? Always." This sentence never lost its genuineness. He'd do anything for her—the world begins and ends where she says so.
She felt his lips move against her ear, and her racing heart slowly composed itself from his assurance. Losing composure was uncommon for her, but even in this exception, she was sagacious enough to know the air between them had long changed.
Refusing to play host to her desire, her head stay lowered. She opted to wipe her tears and joked about how she didn't want his ghost to haunt her, hoping a distraction would alleviate her pounding heart.
Despite her prayers, Alex tilted her chin upwards to meet him, "Never happening."
They were so close. "Even when you're a ghost?"
"Mhm. I'm pretty hard to shake."
"You'd definitely be one of those annoying ghosts... With no sense of boundaries."
The magnetic allure of her lips called to him. On its own accord, his thumb ghosted ever so slightly over her parted lips, stealing a sharp breath from them both. They were dead silent.
And something in Alex warned him to reduce his voice to a whisper, afraid that he might scare this moment away, "Boundaries... You want it...?"
Everything was electrified. His touch, his gaze. Alexis worked hard not to crumble under his intense stare.
Then it happened, his gaze fell on her lips. She definitely didn't imagine that.
"Do you?" she deflected. Mildly embarrassed that her voice had the abraded texture of stone against stone.
Even when her lungs screamed for air, Alexis still forgot to breathe. She was busy listening to the angel and the devil warring inside her, pleading to her rationality. It was clear which side won when she closed her eyes.
Her world was pitch black. Senses put into overdrive. The touch along her jawline felt like it burned. She thought if this was what being set on fire felt like, she'd gladly pay the price.
His breath fanned across her nose. And then their noses touched.
Alexis felt horrible for her overworking heart, rapidly pumping oxygen to her brain—she certainly dared not to breathe, terrified to screw this up. Maybe there was a screeching voice inside her head, but it was fogged by her desires.
Tingles rushed through her when his lips brushed her own, the velvety feeling of it already so addictive. Alexis closed her eyes, waiting for the impact, and then–
A sharp knock forced them both apart.
She almost got whiplash from how fast she turned to the door, making her clutch her head in pain. The silhouette of Kyle Garrick stood in front of them, head still bowed while reading a prescription off a medicine tube.
"Nero- no, Neosporin," he cluelessly recited. "Antibiotic cream." When Kyle finally raised his head, a look of doubt crossed his face upon the flustered duo.
He awkwardly tossed the tube to Alex. "Okay... Weird vibe. Alia said to apply it or else."
"Thanks, Garrick," Alexis grimaced at her slightly pitchy voice, "Um. Get some rest, yeah?"
"Mhm. As you were..."
The door closed after him. Tensed at the shuffling sounds behind her, her brain replayed the scene much to her protest.
"Still want me to stay?" Alex said in a low voice. She hadn't realised she was still staring at the empty doorway.
What was that? She never loathed her noisy thoughts more than this moment. Oh fucking fuck, shit. I'm so stupid.
No... Why am I embarrassed? He initiated the stupid kiss! She reasoned, digging for some form of consolation to find the courage to snap around, preparing herself for what might come next. But she wasn't expecting the smug smile he so proudly wore. She then wondered if she should feel relieved or nervous.
But as a wave of dizziness forced her to grab a handful of bedsheets, she inwardly spoke gratitude that she didn't have to decide.
What was this? What were they, really? Too many questions and too little answers.
"Come on, it's past your bedtime," Alex pulled her back into the bed and started to administer the medication on her cheek wounds. Today was already a heck of a day, and with the soothing circles rubbed into her skin, she surrendered to her tiredness.
"Night..."
Upon her steady breathing, Alex tossed the tube across the room and it landed accurately on his vest with a soft thud. His finger outlined a path from her forehead and hovered hesitantly above her lips. The very same one he should have already felt.
Thanks, Garrick.
A frustrated sigh escaped him, loud enough to make Alexis nuzzle deeper into him, an arm draped over his waist.
He laid back down, replaying their scenes from earlier. A bolt of lightning might as well strike him now—maybe that would explain the bursting feeling in his chest.
"Wow," he mouthed in realisation. "I'm a damn idiot."
Years ago when she tipsily ended up on his doorstep desperate for him to take the pain away, he willingly obliged. No denials that he had the biggest selfish reason to say yes.
Fuck, it was a strange feeling to finally get all that he dreamt of. That night, he was too busy planning a confession in his head to sleep. But by dawn, the demons inside him questioned if he truly deserved someone like Alexis.
Someone like her? For him? It was too good to be true. His mind raced with the "What ifs?"
"What if our jobs clashed?"
"What if I put her in danger?"
"What fucking if the long distance fucks everything up?"
Their friendship would be in shreds. And she was one of the– the most important person in his life. No way would he lose her.
So he pushed her away—looked her in the eyes and lied. For Heaven's sakes, he wanted to punch himself. And he knew he made the right decision because when their friendship took a hit for a few weeks, the loneliness was unparalleled.
He didn't want to feel that way again. Ever.
Alex might have kept their friendship, but at the cost of everything. He liked to picture how different things would have been, if not for his cowardice. He thought about it frequent enough to imprint a permanent gnaw in his heart.
Now, here it was. A bloody second chance. His second chance.
Alex peered down to the butterfly tattoo on his bare chest, smiling. The universe's proof, alright, he whispered, "Gotcha."
The night ended with Alex falling into dreams of the woman he loved.

If you haven't checked out this game yet... You should!
It's name is Dauntless, and it is free to download. It is much like Monster Hunter, just with a little more cartoony animation. You get to traverse the Maelstrom hunting and killing Behemoths (aka monsters) and harvesting their parts to create gear and weapons to help you on other hunts.
Biggest perk of them all: YOU CAN PET THE DOGS IN THE MAIN CITY!
Its fun, its grand, you can play solo or with a group (matchmaking is a thing too), and they didn't think the game would be such a good hit.
Also... Every day they do maitinence to try and better people's play. They also are continuously implementing new things and have plans for new Behemoth encounters as well as weapons and armor.
So you all should go look it up. It is free to play!

DCXDP FIC IDEA: The Dauntless Matchmaker
Danny Fenton is short on cash. He has been short on cash almost all his adult life, but usually, he can pull through untill the last minute before breaking and asking his family for help.
It's a pain in a half trying to find a job that is flexible enough to accommodate his "Health" issues.
He needs time off to keep his agreement. See back when he was sixteen, he realized that the ghosts that had been bothering him were all trying to challenge him for his power.
At first he looked like easy prey- being new and all- but the more fights he won the more his reputation rose and that made the ghosts attack less frequently.
They just became harder since the big guns wanted a crack at him. Danny proposed that the fights be in neutral grounds- the ghost zone- since fights in Amity Park were ruining his haunt.
Haunt Rights were highly protected and respected in the Infinite Releams.
His adversaries agreed under the condition that Danny responded to the battles within two hours; otherwise, they would haunt him in the human world.
Ghost fighting in the Infinite Releams to keep the ghosts busy, and nowadays, only the strongest bothered him like a bi-weekly challenge from dead beings that don't understand scheduling.
It worked out.....until he couldn't explain why he was missing so often in the human world. With the help of some friendly ghosts, he was able to fake a diagnosis of some muscle disorder and has been living with the excuse that he would go MIA because of it. He missed a lot.
Often enough to have almost every job he's gotten to fire him.
This brings him to his current problem. Yes, Danny can argue that he has a disability but to do so would mean having someone look into it and realize it's not real.
So when Charlie from the Tea MadHouse tells him not to bother returning tomorrow after a four-day-long battle, he can only sigh and turn in his tea maker apron.
He might have to call his parents to ask for help on this month's rent. That's a bitter pill to swallow.
If only there was a job that he could do that had no problem with him taking multiple days off without notice.
"Pardon me. I need a moment of your time." a voice calls out. Danny twists around, turning his neck slightly downwards to meet the green-eyed stare of a young boy.
"I have a proposition for you. My elder brother requires a fake lover to fool our family butler into thinking that he has moved on from the heartbreak of his last disastrous relationship. Not that anyone could blame Dowd for ending things with Drake. In any case, seeing as I have witnessed your unemployment, I figured you would do well for the job."
Danny blinks "I'm sorry?"
The kid pulls out a wad of cash. Danny can practically hear the ca-ching sound surrounding the boy as he raises a brow.
He gapes as the youth slaps the cash into his hand without so much as a blink.
"Do we have an accord?" The boy asks while Danny slowly turns the money in his hand.
"Whatever you say, temporary in-law," He says after flipping through the bills only to realize it's a hundred-dollars. A quick count of how many he's been handed causes his eyes to almost pop out of thier socket.
It's more then enough for this month's rent-hell he has some left over for at least four months!
"Excellent, we are expected at dinner. If Drake acts surprised to see you merely tap the table six times, then four. He shall fall into line and build off our lie."
Danny scrambles after the kid, nodding to himself. "Six, then four. Got it. Ugh, does the dinner have a dress code?"
It sounds like it would since a young boy just gave out hundreds like it was nothing. Danny would feel bad showing up in an old pair of jeans and a faded t-shirt.
Maybe he has a formal shirt somewhere.
The boy's green eyes flickered to him, then his watch on his wrist. "An impressive observation. Pennyworth will not be impressed by a poorly dressed paramour. We have time to purchase a suit. Come along."
Danny has no idea how someone so small can walk so fast. He feels his breathing is coming in quick bursts, but the boy doesn't seem winded at all. He winces when the boy enters a well-known suit place that is very pricey. "Is this coming out of my pay?"
"No. This shall be covered by the company card," The strange child says, holding up a black card with a quick flick of his wrist. At the sight of it, two store attendants appear at their side, offering assistance. Danny has never seen such power.
"W-wait we have a company card?" He shutters, overwhelmed by the attendant pushing him into a changing room and a light blue suit in his arms.
"Yes. However, you have a limit on what can be spent with it. I shall review the details later regarding your medical, dental, and vision benefits."
"I GET DENTAL?!"
"Of course. America's ridiculous health programs will mistreat no employee of mine simply due to lack of funds. " The boy scoffed, sounding offended by the very idea.
Danny doesn't care how long he needs to pretend to be this boy's boyfriend, and he'll sign a contract right now.
_______________________________________
Damian waited for Fenton to finish trying on all the suits the personal sellers had pushed onto him. He personally thinks the light blue was the best but it doesn't hurt to try other options.
They need Fenton to look his best to woo Drake and get him to stop acting so pathetic.
Yes, Dowd had broken up with him for reasons Damian is unaware of, nor does he care enough to find them, but Drake has had plenty of people break up with him before and remain on good terms with him.
Just look at Brown.
Drake had also always bounced right back after the breakup, usually because he would get tied up in either work at Wayne Industries or Red Robin.
Yet, for some reason, unlike all the others, Dowd leaving has not only been messy it also threw Drake into a downwards spiral.
He has refused even to get dress- walking around in a bathrobe and fluffy slippers- eating ice cream and sobbing over photos of Dowd for hours on end. He taken a leave from Wayne Industries and mostly stayed on monitor duty as Red Robin.
At other times, he plays sad songs and watches romance movies with a dead look in his eyes. Usually there were crumbs of some unknown spicy chips all over his face too.
Really it was unseemly.
It's been four months of this, and Drake does not seem to be getting it together. Damian had researched online, and all of the articles indicate that he should have felt better by the third-month mark.
He would have left the fool well alone only Pennyworth is beginning to worry. And Damian refuses to let Pennyworth worry over something fixable.
His research showed that a "rebound" was highly recommended (if done correctly), in the healing process of a breakup. Drake refused to find one, so Damian assigned himself the task of finding one for him instead.
He considered Drake's past lovers' looks, interests, and personalities. Then creating a list of what was considered a good candidate he wandered around Gotham in search of someone who would be a perfect rebound.
His efforts led him to Tea MadHouse- a tea shop with a surprisingly good coffee menu- where Daniel Fenton worked. Over three weeks, Damian had watched him, categorizing the pros and cons that Drake would find within Fenton, and concluded that he would be perfect.
The fact Fenton has lost his job now only worked in his favor. He'll convince Drake that Fenton is a decoy for Pennyworth - since Drake was getting fed up with all the hovering- and he would never notice that the real target of this fake relationship would be Drake himself all along.
Fenton will woo him, sweep him off his feet, make him forget Dowd and ride off into the sunset with Drake none the wiser. It was full-proof.
Damian will make Drake rebound on Fenton, even if he has to throw the idiot at the other teen. He is getting awful tired of the concerned glances whenever Drake slumps his way into a room.
No other reason. He certainly didn't care about Drake that much nor did does he lay awake at night wondering how Drake is doing now that he does not have someone to hold him.
Drake doesn't sleep well alone.
"How do I look?" Fenton stepped out of the booth wearing the light blue suit. It made his eyes pop and framed his body well.
Yes, muscular. The body of a boxer. Drake will lose his mind over those biceps.
"Ravishing." He tells the nineteen-year-old. Damian barely bites back a smirk as Fenton flushed, painting a pretty picture. Drake enjoys talking his lovers up, and Fenton will do well to receive plenty of compliments. "Let us be off."
Drake won't know what hit him.

Final Tale: the Final Fairy Tale
My Nano Project this year is this little gem: Final Tale (I’m not good with names and am seriously procrastinating on writing right now)
Some characters I am not going into too much depth because it is either spoilers or they are extra and are underdeveloped.
Summary
Short Version: childhood friends to lovers, but war and fantasy.
Long Version:
Young Prince Finnley and Aspiring Knight Helios become friends after a small sparring session set up by their parents. Over the years they have become close, however when faced with a choice between honor and his heart Helios turns the young prince’s offer of a courtship down.
Finnley continues to be friends with Helios and when he leaves for a year abroad writes him letters while also promising to be back in time for Helios’ knighthood ceremony. A few months away from when he is to return, Finn stops responding to any letters and his parents and friends are in constant worry. When a strange young man shows up at the castle on the Prince’s horse, Casper, spewing tells about a war and how the Prince saved his life. Now on a mission to save his Prince, and the boy he has loved for years, Helios and a group of ten knights head into the war infested country of Jinik.
Finnley finds the customs of Jinik harsh. Having never been good with a sword despite being born of a King and Queen who are considered legends, thrown into a country where strength is the only defining factor has left him with little friends despite his charisma and silver-tongue ways. However, he has found a few in Wolfgang, a tall blonde hair and eyed mage with a mean temper, and Cassandra, a married lady of the court but a truly fierce warrior with a loving husband.
When late in the night the school he is studying in is attacked by Jinik’s King’s men. When faced with saving his friends and facing the Knights of Jinik alone, Finnley rushes them to safety. Deciding to allow the young stable boy to flee on Casper, Finnley stands his ground and discovers that King’s blood is more powerful than a sword and King’s blood his fire.
Now locked in war with the tyrannical King obsessed with finding a relic that could give him ultimate power and destroy the world as they know it, the two childhood friends have no choice but to fight. Wolfgang taking on the leadership role of the uprising with Cassandra has his right hand and Finnley aiding in battle strategy and espionage. Helios wishes to send Finnley home and Finnley wishes that Helios would see him not as a fragile flower anymore.
When the dangers of war increase, Finnley and Helios will have to confront their feelings for one another before they can win the war and return home. Can Helios follow his heart or forever be torn by his duty and honor? Will Finnley be able to open himself up to Helios again after his rejection or will he forever stop himself from pursuing the man he thinks doesn’t want him? What will happen if the King finds the relic before they do?

So, Dauntless finally dropped on PS4 today. Got to play it with friends and I gotta say, when we got to play it was pretty fun. The environments were pretty and I like the style Phoenix Labs went with. The few monsters I've seen so far look good and, while having a few annoying moves, are pretty fun to fight otherwise.
However, I experienced some very annoying issues with loading times, both for entering the game and matchmaking for hunts. This is despite being in private hunts with a party. I also experienced a few crashes while playing. Two while in a party, one alone, and one with another random player.
I'd love to say I only had a good time while playing this game, but the connectivity issues, along with some rather insidious monetization methods, I can't. Something I am hoping is true is that the connection issues I faced were due to the game's servers being filled to the brim, along with some issues that cross-play might be experiencing. If/when those are fixed, I think I'll be playing it quite a bit more

Livestream 8/9
Today’s stream focused on talking about small changes to Ranked, some patch stuff, and what we’ll see next week!
Tl;dr There are some changes to make Ranked matchmaking better, upcoming bug fixes, and news about the event will drop next week
To start off, Eric, Damien and Stefan discussed things that weren’t on the patch notes but went into the patch, as well as some bug fixes and changes that will come in a future patch. There was some live maintenance today, as well as an upcoming maintenance this Tuesday.
First off, it appeared as though Warden could soft feint a shoulder bash from a heavy finisher. This isn’t true.
Also, the patch notes stated that Valkyrie’s sweep timing was 500ms, while it was actually 600.
Both of these were test ideas from previous RIFT tests that someone had written down on the notes.
There is a game crashing bug relating to equipping effects to executions. This has been fixed and will be part of the future patch.
Also, it may be obvious, even more so on console, but there has been a drop in frames while in the customization menu. This is also fixed and will be in the future patch.
There’s also a bug that kicks players due to inactivity, even if you’re playing normally. This is fixed and should’ve been a part of today’s maintenance.
Another Warden thing, but if you play them pretty often you may have noticed. If you whiff a Shoulder Bash you eat up an abnormal amount of stamina. This is clearly a bug and is fixed for the next patch.
A small goof on the team’s part, but some of the weapons shown last week aren’t in the game until Season 8!
Today’s maintenance focuses on Ranked changes.
Players have found ways to quit the game so they don’t get any rank loss. This mainly consisted of quitting the game entirely using the task manager on PC and simply quitting the game on console instead of leaving the match. Now, if you do this you will still take the loss. However, you will take a loss if you get disconnected accidentally as well. This seems like a big punishment, but Ranked is considered serious business.
When you get penalized by disconnecting, you will get a 40% rank deduction and a 30 minute time penalty.
There is also a change to the qualifying matchmaking. Before today, the matchmaking was static, which means that even if you were a really good player, you may go up against weaker players, or vice versa. This also means that players can make smurf accounts, and then plow through the qualifying matches to get a high rank. Now matchmaking is dynamic, so you will get paired up with more even players.
Finally, there will be a change in terms of rank divisions. When you would go up in a division, like from Silver 5 to Gold 1 for example, there would have been and extra 25% boost so you don’t fluctuate between the two divisions. This seemed like too much so they then reduced it to 10%, but a bug kept the 25% increase. Now the rank boost is simply 5 percent. This means you may flip-flop more often, but there isn’t any drastic changes.
To end things off with the Ranked news, Damien announced that they had been tracking players who abused the disconnection exploit, and after today their rank level has been reset entirely. Those reset are considered the worst offenders, so those that accidentally disconnected are safe. They also went over the decay system. If you don’t play ranked for 14 days while in Master or Grandmaster division, your skill rating will decay. What dictates a day of inactivity? Damien says that if you don’t play 3 ranked matches a day it counts for one day of inactivity. So if you’re highly ranked, be sure to get some ranked matches done so you don’t fall down the ranks!
To celebrate the Rank overhaul, this weekend Ranked Duel Tournament will return this coming weekend, starting August 10 and ending August 13. To go along with this, there will be the first of many Ranked Orders. To participate, you have to play ranked duels or tournaments. Whichever faction wins the most ranked matches will win some XP boost tickets!
Next was a discussion about fight changes, some will happen in the patch, and some will happen Tuesday.
The team decided that when your opponent is out of stamina, instead of attacking them to further drain stamina, your attacks would pause stamina regen. This means that you still have an advantage over them, but it’s a little faster to regain stamina and get back in the fight. Unfortunately, certain aspects that work in tandem with this haven’t come out yet, so they will be removing this aspect until everything is in order.
Shugoki has become the center of attention recently. He’s one of the only main heroes left with no rework, and he’s been nerfed into the ground. One reason he’s nerfed is because of a bug fix. Shugoki was the only hero to affect enemies that are in Revenge while they are attacking, thanks to his Demon’s Embrace. This was actually a bug, and in an attempt to fix it, weakened his playstyle. This bug fix will be rolled back so he can now grab revenge-enemies again. Another problem that has surfaced is that while out of stamina, Shugoki wouldn’t get his hyper armor. According to Stefan, this was a problem since launch, and is being looked at now.
Valkyrie’s rework has had some mixed reviews. The team understands this and wanted to let us know that she’s still being looked at and is still subject to change. For Valk’s sake, keep playing her. Roman needs more data to figure things out before any new changes can be considered. And if you have any ideas, let them know.
There are some changes to the game that weren’t listed in the patch notes last week. Roman emphasizes that they aren’t trying to sneak in changes under our noses. If something has changed, it either wasn’t written down, a bug, or something that was slipped in unintentionally after adding something they did want into the current build.
Berserker has an animation bug. When you feint an attack into a quick light, there is a small hiccup in the animation that makes it harder to hide where your armored light is coming from. This is currently being worked on.
Stance change can be canceled by dodging. This wasn’t in last week’s patch notes because it was meant to be in a future patch. A pleasant oops.
Conqueror has a longer startup when activating full block. This is an unintentional side effect of another bug fix and is being looked into.
A new roadmap is here! And starting next week it looks like our seasonal event begins! The roadmaps has four new event orders: The Eruption of Mt Ignis, Beaufort Stronghold, Iarla Stronghold, and Kyuden Stronghold.
Finally, there was some discussion regarding the changes to gear next season. They went over the fact that all of your gear will change over easily to the perk system so you don’t have to grind for new stuff. They will also give us some crates to help us find perks we do want. Also the pricing of changing your gear’s appearance will now be standardized.
Then the Content of the Week: Three new battle outfits. Damien is proud that the quality of battle outfits is going up, and with the permanent price drop for them, now might be the time to give them a look.
The outfits are: Triumphant Splendor, Dauntless Brigade, Gamb.er’s Fallacy
Next week is the reveal of our fiery new event, so they’ll be talking about what we get to fight then!
