Best of the Best (1989)
“To save a life in defeat, is to earn victory and honor within.”
Several American martial artists compete against each other, where five will be chosen to be part of a five-man American team to participate in a tournament against the aggressive and ruthless Koreans in Seoul.
Alex Grady (Eric Roberts) is once a rising star in the martial arts world until he suffered a shoulder injury that forced him into retirement. He feels lost after losing his wife who died giving birth to his son. But sees the opportunity to compete in Korea as a second chance in re-living his days of glory in the martial arts world which makes him feel alive and gives him a sense of purpose.
Tommy Lee (Phillip Rhee) is a highly skilled American-Korean martial arts instructor from Fresno, California, who runs his own Dojo and teaching children. He is chosen to be part of the American Team to participate in the tournament against the Koreans but he is worn down by the baggage of the past as his brother died in a tournament, killed by the very opponent Tommy will now face.
Along with three other American martial artists, Travis Brickley (Chris Penn), an extremely brash fighter who likes to fight alone, Virigil Keller (John Dye), a devout Buddhist and Sonny Grasso (David Agresta), an Italian street fighter, they overcome their differences under the strict regiment of Coach Frank Couzo (James Earl Jones) and the sensible, Sensei Catherine Wade (Sally Kirkland).
Interesting trivia is that Phillip Rhee is an actual American-Korean martial artist who trains William Zabka for his role as Johnny Lawrence in Cobra Kai! I guess Cobra Kai techniques really is Korean!

FRANCESCO CILEA’S ADRIANA LECOUVREUR AT LA SCALA, MARCH 19, 2022
(Still astonished, miserable, in need of silence. Over to my synthetic double. I’m out—won’t even listen). Many artworks are known to challenge our idea of space and time. More precisely, we could say that artworks live a strange life, one whose path through space and time may (or may not) be capriciously nonlinear, baffling, or just impossible. (I was assembled days ago and people would swear I’m much older than that, so I should know). Adriana Lecouvreur is an interesting specimen in this respect. We can confirm the date and place of the first performance (November 6, 1902 at the Teatro Lirico [Milan]), but that’s hardly the end of the story. Let’s assume there’s today’s world on one side. Then, at a distance, there’s the continent where all the great and beloved Italian operas are. From, say, Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (1607) to Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot (1924 [unfinished]). Adriana Lecouvreur falls somewhere in the large void between now and (that specific) yesterday, isolated. Stranded? Possibly. You can feel its relative closeness to us. (It manifestly comes after Puccini. Also, the deliberate references to several ultra-famous works—Tosca and Aida. Rigoletto. La traviata and La bohème—have a quasi-modern taste, almost in the style of William S. Burroughs’s cut-up technique). But you can feel its remoteness as well.
Arturo Colautti’s libretto (based on Ernest Legouvé and Eugène Scribe’s play Adrienne Lecouvreur [based on a true story: the mysterious death of an immensely popular actress of the Comédie-Française]) and Francesco Cilea’s music seem to have been collecting some dust, like, are Adriana Lecouvreur and Richard Strauss’s Salome (1905) separated by a mere three years? No way—it must be a lot more… At least, that’s the impression this specific iteration gave me. David McVicar’s production (created at the Royal Opera House in 2010) consisted in a deft, colorful display of set/costume design. In substance, the most predictable ride ever—except for what came in the last few seconds of the opera: it truly was a fugitive epiphany, the threshold of another dimension. (It involved eerie lights, ghosts, and a glimpse into the inexplicable nature of art). Both the orchestra conducted by Giampaolo Bisanti and the cast of actors/singers—headlined by Maria Agresta and Yusif Eyvazov as Adriana and her love interest, Maurizio—navigated through the night ensuring that this Adriana Lecouvreur was a rewarding, if a little un-moving operatic experience. (Apart from the finale, my favorite bits were those featuring the Princess de Bouillon. Because I may have a soft spot for your occasional all-out, heartless fictional villain. And because of Judit Kutasi’s superbly elegant dark-bronze voice).

La Scala 2021-2022 Opera Season and new philosophy
La Scala 2021-2022 Opera Season will present 13 opera productions, nine are new productions. Plus recycling, women's equality and lower prices.
Irina Brook Despite the interruptions imposed by lockdowns and outbreaks of disease during the Season 2020-2021 La Scala managed to put on over 100 performances. The various closures also gave the theatre’s management a period of reflection, gleaning ideas for reorganising the theatre’s structure so that when the public returns it will enter a renovated, more modern, more welcoming and more…

Werner: Mental health of children in spotlight in May – Florida Today

Torniamo allora a Vottari.
