Raining Supremes
DREAMGIRLS Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, Wednesday 7th December, 2022 There are many shows that chart the highs and lows of the business we call show, detailing the rise and fall of musical artistes, often involving real-life dead singers.  This one focusses on a fictional Motown-style girl group and adheres pretty much to the same storytelling formula, touching upon white exploitation of…

It's what I call a "burden" favorite. I guess I have about 20 songs or pieces of music in my mind that, if I'm hearing them with someone, I have this need to explain what transpires for me during the song, and it's just too much.
Too many connotations, way too much personal history, so much objective analysis of the music and subjective response to all the "where were you when? memories. All of it is positive and thrilling and satisfying, but the world (or universe) that, for example "It's Raining" creates for me, well, it would take less time to paint the thing than explain it.
And of course I love Walker's sonority here, and effortless conversational approach, the immaculate phrasing, all bringing to mind Sinatra and Andy Williams and Johnny Hartman and, dare I say, Gary Puckett. But Walker was the master, on his best days.
Really dig the compositional elements too. That tension. The cavernous production. If I started a play list with it, I would continue with Martin Denny’s “Blue Carousel”, Aaron Copland’s “Quiet City,” Roy Budd’s “Hallucination” instrumental from Get Carter, and the Peddlers’ amazing version of “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.”

Cool, Cool, Cool ~
~ Cool, Cool, Cool ~
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4R5kLX_ups0LWAMWm3MnQmDkNC0HIJft
01 Cool, Cool, Cool … Godley & Creme 02 Like the Morning Dew … Laura Mvula 03 Cursis Melodias … Natalia Lafourcade 04 Lean On Me … Club Nouveau 05 Hate Myself … dodie 06 Formwela 10 … esperanza spalding 07 Oboe … Jackie Mittoo 08 Nothin' on You … Marcela Mangabeira 09 WOLF … SPECIAL OTHERS ACOUSTIC 10 Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 … The Flaming Lips 11 Dek Kai Nuang Sue Pim … Sangthong Seesai 12 Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) … Julie London 13 Don't Sleep in the Subway … Petula Clark 14 Pisca Punga … YMCK 16 Girl On My Mind … Roland Ray 17 It Keeps You Runnin' … The Doobie Brothers 18 Wonder Groove … Steve Gray 19 East of the River Nile (feat. Dennis Bovell) … Zara McFarlane 20 Minus Me … Alostmen 21 Amazonia (Sax Version) … S-Tone Inc. 22 Charade … Nicola Conte 23 Mr. Rose … Roy Budd 24 Life Is Good … Funkservice International 25 Just Say Goodbye … Frank Popp Ensemble 26 Peter Popgunn … The John Schroeder Orchestra 27 Per Noi Due Soli … Piero Piccioni 28 Bare Necessities … Dimie Cat 29 We No Speak Americano … Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP 30 Tengo Miedo … Maria Rodes 31 Box Of Secrets … Zarif 32 Stamping Ground … Moondog 33 Little Steps … Nostalgia 77 34 Tableau de Chasse … Claire Diterzi 35 miu … Marina Herlop 36 貞奴 … 37 What the World Needs Now … Tom Clay 38 I'm a Fantastic Wreck … Montaigne 39 Ecstatic Baby … Nadja 43 Japão … Dora Morelenbaum 44 snow … Serph 45 Glitter of the City (Song by Tahira) … Ron Everett
03 Cursis Melodias (Natalia Lafourcade) …
04 Lean On Me (Club Nouveau) … 80年代のヒット曲。
05 Hate Myself (dodie) …
06 Formwela 10 (esperanza spalding) … "Songwrights Apothecary Lab"
08 Nothin' on You (Marcela Mangabeira) … YouTube
10 Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 (The Flaming Lips) …
11 Dek Kai Nuang Sue Pim (Sangthong Seesai) …
12 Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) (Julie London) … 12
13 Don't Sleep in the Subway (Petula Clark) …
14 Pisca Punga (Pat C.) …
17 It Keeps You Runnin' (The Doobie Brothers) … 70
18 Wonder Groove (Steve Gray) …
19 East of the River Nile (Zara McFarlane) …
20 Minus Me (Alostmen) …
22 Charade (Nicola Conte) …
23 Mr. Rose (Roy Budd) … "Mr. Rose Investigates"
26 Peter Popgunn (The John Schroeder Orchestra) … 「
28 Bare Necessities (Dimie Cat) …
31 Box Of Secrets (Zarif) …
32 Stamping Ground (Moondog) …
34 Tableau de Chasse (Claire Diterzi) …
35 miu (Marina Herlop) …
37 What the World Needs Now (Tom Clay) … What the World Needs Now"にラジオ音声を乗せた、1973年のリミックス作品。
38 I'm a Fantastic Wreck (Montaigne) …
39 Ecstatic Baby (Yeasayer) …
41 A Morte de Um Deus de Sal (Eumir Deodato, Neco & Samba Nova Concepção) …
43 Japão (Dora Morelenbaum) …
45 Glitter of the City (Ron Everett/Song by Tahira) …

What it was... was a lovely summer's evening.
We spent the morning being completely non-productive. Then we spent late morning early afternoon being semi-productive. Then we gave up all intentions of productivity because The Little Lies had a gig yesterday from six to eight at the Port of Olympia's Summer Nights event.
It's a nice venue. Actually not a venue at all but a parking lot that fronts Entrance Channel, the southernmost tip of Budd Inlet that itself is the southernmost arm of Puget Sound.
Tumblr media
The stage was set in front of the shore facing the parking lot. The audience was set up in camp chairs in front of and all across the parking lot with space between them and the stage.
The reason for that would quickly become evident as soon as the music started.
To the southeast of the stage was a short embankment on which people set blankets and atop which they set more camping chairs.
To the southwest of the stage was a taco stand, a coffee stand, and a beer and wine stand where we immediately indulged a pair of raspberry blonde ales.😁
Directly across from the band, behind the audience down a hill a little was the Sweetlee's Ice Cream truck. 😁😁😁
Interestingly, our lovely evening's story starts on the drive down to Olympia.
First of all, there are I-5 lane closures this weekend that are officially scrambling southbound traffic. Bringing it to near stand-still. So the band's drive to Olympia began with a half hour of inching along south 5 through downtown. We, on the other hand, tried outsmarting the WSDOT by taking Denny to Stewart to Fifth to Dearborn to Sixth to the south 5 on-ramp at Spokane.
Ha!
Of course that all took roughly a half-hour to accomplish, too. But at least we were moving.
😐
After that, though, we were golden to Fife when we got a call from Linzy asking if we'd left Seattle yet because if we hadn't, well... she forgot her guitar strap and no one had an extra she could bum for a coupla hours.
Since we were already on our way, Kimmer had Linzy locate a Guitar Center somewhere in front of us where we could grab a strap and go. Which is exactly what happened once Linzy messaged the directions to a Guitar Center four miles in front of us in Tacoma. One that was barely off the freeway.
Score!
Tumblr media
Now the challenge was to hand the new guitar strap over to Linzy before she takes the stage with The Little Lies in roughly 33 minutes. So after racing the rest of the way down I-5 and enduring a couple false stops just shy of the stage location, I drop Kimmer at the top of the hill overlooking the stage, Kimmer runs the strap down to Linzy who's standing next to the stage, who takes it, attaches it to her guitar, and then runs up on stage.
BAM.
The show starts.
It was a close thing, is what I'm saying. Like we got there inside a minute of the show starting.
Now that I think of it, though, I Iove how dramatically different that was from how we used to experience Linzy's gigs once upon a time when she was in jr. high, high school, and college.
She's a professional now, you see.
She makes her money on this.
And that is exciting.
Even when she forgets her guitar strap.
😉
And yeah.
What it was... was a lovely summer's evening. Shared with the ideal audience for a Fleetwood Mac tribute band. Avid fans all the way around. There were a lot of people dancing up front between the stage and the camp chairs. There was even a bunch of children dancing up there whom the band publicly dubbed their Solid Gold Dancers.
The kids didn't get the reference...  but the audience sure did.
😆
As always, of course, The Little Lies put on a great show. The harmonies. The guitar solos. The rhythms. The leads. The, not only classic but, iconic Rock. The energy. Even the humor.
Equal to that part of our summer evening, though, was the sun. Was the location. The water. The shore. The breeze. The inlet. The boats. The trees.
Basically the Pacific Northwest at its best.
And maybe a month or two from now, when summer—finally, SUMMER!!!—gives it up to Fall that'll give way to winter and grey and cold, even as the holidays descend, later...
I want to indulge this memory. This day, this evening, when the planets aligned and everything was perfect.

I just wanted to try capturing the warmth and happiness from one of my favorite fluff scenes in Power Pills. Also tried not using a line tool for the backgrounds? I think it's obvious why I use the vector tool in Sai when I do backgrounds now aidshfaosdifasdf. But, hey!
