I wonder how would RoD Kazuichi and Mikan would get along...

Okay so this actually gave me quite a lot of thoughts lol, for starters I think they do mostly get along okay, at least for remnants. It helps that these two didn’t really have any predetermined relationships going in, like I don’t think they were too close in class or interacted all that much.

As remnants however it’s a whole other story. Because like, Kazuichi gets hurt a lot. Be it from the future foundation, another remnant, or his own inventions backfiring, there’s pretty much always something going wrong. And because Kazuichi was in charge of some pretty vital things like the killing game executions and the pollution machines, it’s important he stays in working condition, which means someone has to come and treat his wounds, and that of course is Mikan.

Mikan likes the visits because she loves taking care of everyone, especially as remnants because haha these super strong global terrorists still need her to come fix their boo boo's. Kazuichi isn’t as much of a fan since being healthy is for lame hope filled losers and like, pain is really really good for despair. But the check ups were ordered by Junko originally so he can’t do more than grumble about it lol.

I think they probably gossip about the others a lot, and maybe work of fun bio weapons together too lol. Lowkey they’ve got such potential as a remnant duo. I have thoughts for how they’d go together in a non despair setting but that’s another time lol

Would one of them just brainwash the other into despair?

or would both of them love the concept of despair so much, they eventually would want to spread it to their classmates? 🤔

Let’s see, CrazyNekoChan made a Mastermind!soudam on AO3 that I love, but it was MM!Gundham that brainwashed everyone including Kazuichi who was also the MM in the planning stages.

I love either one being the Mastermind because whoo! The power dynamics! My first watch of a silent play through (I didn’t have game consoles at the time rip) I was DREADING being Kazuichi being the MM but it would’ve been a genius move - the supposedly simp mechanic being so absorbed by a pretty girl; who would think he was a calculating murder mastermind behind this killing game?

But back to the question: my answer would be a little mixture of both HOWEVER it would depend on who is Ultimate Despair:

If it’s Gundham, he would want to make Kazuichi see the true depravity of humanity. He feels like his Ultimate talent has opened himself to the real state of the world and humanity and it is as horrible and unrepentant as he always knew it was. Making Kazuichi and his best friend/student Sonia see this truth is a mercy - for they will not be lead astray by these tainted humans any longer.

He of course experimented on a few first years - you can’t bake a cake without cracking a few eggs and he made a mess of several…dozen. But he was able to create the perfect program that was as humane as possible (note: that didn’t involve invasive surgery or injury). He found the Kamakura Program and used the lab and Izuru was freed in exchange for helping him.

Sonia was his first official start and well…something went slightly wrong. However, she came out of it 99.9% intact and has had her third eye opened s he counted it a success. With Kazuichi, he took his time. His vibrant hell flower was surprisingly resilient in the first stages.

But he learned after Sonia and it was most unfortunate that it took so long. He needed to take his time with his beloved and the end result was truly worth it.

He thinks of making his fellow classmates see the light as well, but the method is so difficult to do in a larger scale and Izuru was calculating months for it to be at that large of a scale. That was too long and he had the two important people in his life. He can destroy the world with three people. The others can be spared…for now.

Now! If it was Kazuichi, he would’ve had production done for large scale projects much faster.

He would see the bigger picture, like Junko, and wanted his friends to be apart of this. He finds Izuru and promises him freedom and an obedient slave (Nagito) in return for his help which make Izuru help only because it’s Nagito. He experimented on Fuyuhiko’s little sister and that other reserve course student first, but sadly the other student killed Nazumi before she could be completely turned to Despair.

He made sure the test subject suffer before Fuyuhiko killed her. He was also furthering his experimentation by introducing it to certain individuals via drink, food or airborne. Granted, he’s not the Ultimate Chemist, but Izuru has been a real help!

But his most important task, was getting Gundham, Akane and Chiaki. Sonia would follow Gundham and Chiaki like a duckling - she’d only be perfect as a money and material distributor. Akane and Chiaki were his sisters basically and he needed their loyalty.

And for Gundham…well. Love makes people want that special someone close at hand. And Gundham was closer - even if that was because he had him chained downed for his special version of the formula.

It was a shame about Chiaki, but losing her made the Despair so much sweeter as he lamented her loss. Oh well. Some things are truly not to be it seemed. But he had the rest of his class to get together and administer the final step. And poor Gundham needed extra attention. Chiaki’s body can be handled later.

That’s a good question! And my answer would be…maybe.

The difference between Kazuichi and Gundham in this is their personality and response to isolation. Kazuichi would fall much quicker than Gundham because his response to violence and domination are freeze and flight due to his dad’s constant abuse as a child. While Gundham was also being abused by his dad, he had his mom and he felt strength protecting her and by extension others before himself, which makes his response to violence fight. That makes a big difference because Kazuichi has to literally keep Gundham chained to prevent him from escaping.

He wouldn’t hurt the breeder intentionally and tries desperately to give him creature comforts and even makes him robotic animals to “care” for (he did give him actual mice once but they somehow managed to pick the knock of the cage). He’s given his own room, with a lock on the outside, a four poster bed, bordered down chairs, desks etc. And cameras monitoring him 24/7. Kazuichi is obsessively watching the live video feed, since Gundham will refuse to see for days at a time. Even when he’s supposed to be working on towards nuclear fallout, he’ll still live stream the room on all his monitors so as to not miss anything.

Gundham had at first denied Kazuichi entrance to his room or his company, but he eventually caves due to loneliness and the need to see if he can break through to the other. It seemed to him that the once bumbling mechanic was under a dark spell. Perhaps he can deduce the root cause and free them both from this curse. But it seems to only make Kazuichi ecstatic when he finally invites him inside his room and immediately begins to demand more - of his time, of his voice, of his touch. He wants all of Gundham and the goth walks a very, very thin line of denying these advances and giving Kazuichi a little bit.

After awhile, I think Kazuichi would get bored of this - the despair isn’t given new stimuli and so he decides to push boundaries. Normally, he wouldn’t do this intentionally, but he isn’t normal anymore, is he? His a Remnant and the world he controls is shared with 14 other people. He shouldn’t have to pussyfoot around the love of his life object of his desire if he didn’t want to. Which pushes Gundham just a bit because ya know, a crazy mechanic is demanding more of him in a stressful situation.

I can’t help but think Kazuichi would take it as a sign of love, due to his Despair fueling his degradation kink lol 😈 Gundham kinda gives in for his sanity’s sake, but he hopes to help Kazuichi and get him free from Junko’s grasp. There seems to be moments of lapses - a flicker of hope here and there. Maybe all is not lost.
