As we bid adieu to a decade and a year that many of us would like to forget, let’s take the time to run through some albums that deserve to stay in our rotations at least until the onset of the imminent apocalypse. It’s a cliche, and we say it every year, but as bad as 2019 might have been in the real world, it was an excellent year for music. I listened to at least 300 albums this year and found at least 150 that I liked! Here’s the stuff that made me think, made me happy, and made me drop my jaw last year.
Some themes I found in my listening--I really like rap music from L.A. and Detroit; A few artists who I admired more than loved in the past came out with albums that I completely adored; the nebulous genre often called “afrobeats” or “afropop” has the highest hit percentage of any international scene since dub/reggae in the 1970s (the African Heat playlist on Spotify might be my actual album of the year); a lot of my favorite albums this year came from people who are clearly the product of music schools; my top four contains two excellent bedroom pop albums, and two excellent treatises on race relations in the USA.
I made a Spotify playlist with highlights from my albums list: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6S9kSm5xG3U1vPxhVyBpQc?si=0PHLV0-XQOyNY3XAVRzzAA
And in case you missed it, here’s my list of the year’s best songs: https://voodoochili.tumblr.com/post/189890284724/my-favorite-songs-of-2019
THE BEST:
10. glass beach - the first glass beach album - the first glass beach album combines chiptune synths, frayed emo vocals, jazz piano, and suite-like song structure into an exhilaratingly chaotic mishmash. Mix it with a strong dose of theater-kid earnestness and the result is the most ambitious debut album of the year and possibly of the decade, providing a peek into an alternate dimension where Los Campesinos! wrote the La La Land soundtrack. It sounds like it shouldn’t work, and it wouldn’t if glass beach didn’t buttress their boundless invention with well-crafted songs, like “classic j dies and goes to hell part 1,” the suitably bonkers intro, the prog-pop opus “bedroom community,” and “cold weather,” which shifts from ska-punk to math rock and back in 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
9. Jenny Lewis - On The Line - Long one of indie’s pre-eminent songsmiths, Jenny Lewis’s On The Line is her most personal album yet, digging deep into her childhood trauma and emerging out the other side with pearls of cheeky wisdom. Jenny’s lived more lives than most, enduring an entire career as an in-demand child star before ever even picking up a guitar; when she reached her teenage years, she learned most of her earnings fed directly into her mother’s heroin habit. Some songs like “Wasted Youth” and “Little White Dove” confront it directly (“Wasted Youth” takes the form of a conversaqtion between Lewis and her sister about their late mother), while other songs like “On The Line” and “Rabbit Hole” are testaments to the strength Lewis gained after fending for herself for so long. Appropriately for an album so focused on the past, Lewis enlists the help of rock legends like Ringo Starr, Don Was, and Benmont Tench, whose organ lends a lush poignancy throughout the album, and transforms opener “Heads Gonna Roll” from a pretty ballad to a genuine tearjerker.
8. Burna Boy - African Giant - West African music continued its quest for global hegemony in 2019, flooding the airwaves with passionate, uptempo party music. Though it was a massive year for artists like Mr Eazi, Zlatan, and do-everything superstar Wizkid, the year belonged to Burna Boy of Nigeria, his sonorous deep voice lending authority to each extravagant boast. Following up last year’s promising Outside, African Giant unleashes Burna’s full potential, drawing a through-line between Africa’s past and present--his use of multilingual lyrics, outspoken politics, and supernatural sense of rhythm updates the famous formula of Afrobeat founding father Fela Kuti for the new era. Aided by frequent collaborator and unheralded genius Kel-P, whose lush and genre-bending beats perfectly complement Burna’s melodic strengths, African Giant was 2019’s most reliable mood booster, presenting standout singles like the irresistible “Anybody,” the ambitious and easygoing “Dangote,” and the romantic club anthem “Secret,” before taking time to explain the history of colonialism in Nigeria on “Another Story.”
7. The Comet Is Coming - Trust In The Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery/The Afterlife - With a long list of collaborators and an even longer list of influences, London-born saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings’ musical ambitions can’t be confined to a single form or style. While his work with Sons of Kemet emphasizes percussion-heavy Caribbean influences and radical spoken word poetry, Hutchings aims squarely for the stratosphere with his The Comet Is Coming project, which continued its progressive jazz odyssey with two worthy albums in 2019. Elevated by the interplay between Hutchings (calling himself King Shabaka), synth wizard Danalogue, and drummer Betamax, Trust In The Lifeforce of Deep Mystery is a mesmerizing cycle of songs. Boasting titles like “The Universe Wakes Up” and “Super Zodiac,” each song searches for (and finds) a trance-like groove, transporting listeners to the far-flung locales of the song titles before reaching an emotional conclusion. A more contemplative, but still ceaselessly propulsive follow-up, The Afterlife is music for the “stargate” sequence from 2001: A Space Odyssey, providing a more optimistic counterpoint to Trust while refining the trio’s unique group dynamic. Together, the two works make an immensely satisfying head trip, offering a thrilling soundtrack for the end of the universe and whatever comes next.
6. Moodymann - Sinner - “I don’t even know what you need, but I’ll provide,” grunts Moodymann on Sinner’s simmering opener “I’ll Provide,” “Cause I got something for all your dirty nasty needs.” Possibly the most singular and beloved figure in a Detroit electronic scene overflowing with singular and beloved figures, Moodymann is known for sublimely tasteful DJ sets and sprawling solo works that fuse house music with elements of R&B, gospel, blues, and funk. By his standards, Sinner is slight, spanning only 7 tracks and 44 minutes, but it benefits from a tight focus, showcasing Moodymann’s effortless creativity. Throughout the project, the artist born Kenny Dixon approaches familiar elements from odd angles: jazzy changes and burbling Fender Rhodes invade an intoxicating two-chord vamp on “Downtown”; fellow Detroiter Amp Fiddler adds soulful auto-tune to the blissful “Got Me Coming Back Right Now.” He even manages to find a fresh way to incorporate Camille Yarbrough’s “Take Yo’ Praise,” most famously sampled by Fatboy Slim, into one of the album’s hardest-charging tracks.
5. Polo G - Die A Legend - Way back in 2011, long before he became rap’s first Pulitzer Prize winner, Kendrick Lamar took a moment to explain his ethos on the outro to his breakthrough Section.80 tape: “I'm not on the outside looking in/I'm not on the inside looking out/I'm in the dead fucking center, looking around.” It was a bold statement, but one that Kendrick’s managed to live up to, and finally we’ve found another artist with the ability to achieve all-seeing perspective on record: Chicago 20-year-old Polo G.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been blown away by a new rapper like I was by Polo G in 2019. He possesses a rare combination of melodic mastery and writerly observation, painting a vivid (if bleak) picture of his life on the South Side. His debut project Die A Legend is packed with unflinching observations about the reality of his situation, he touches on his former pill addiction on “Battle Cry” and he reminisces about talking to his younger sister through a prison phone on “Through Da Storm.” As dark as the subject matter can get, Polo never crumbles under the pressures of poverty or fame, staying afloat with crisp melodies that mix the emotional honesty of Lil Durk with the radio-ready slickness of Wiz Khalifa. He’s already mastered the art of the rap ballad, and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
4. Helado Negro - This Is How You Smile - This Is How You Smile overflows with warmth, inspiring a feeling I don’t often get from music. Listening to it feels like a long-awaited return to a physical place of comfort--a childhood bedroom, perhaps, or a reading nook in a favorite library. Our tour guide is Roberto Carlos Lange, an expert sound designer whose plainspoken, pleasantly nasal voice might be the friendliest sound in music today. The album is comforting, yet unpredictable, with songs that range from synth folk to bedroom pop to ambient field recordings, and feature lyrics that vacillate between English and Spanish. Highlights include the bouncy “Seen My Aura,” calling to mind a collaboration between The Brothers Johnson and Ariel Pink, the sweeping and mesmerizing “Running,” combining trap drums and Budd/Eno piano, and my favorite, the devastating acoustic ballad “Todo lo que me falta.”
3. Jamila Woods - LEGACY, LEGACY! - Jamila Woods has a gift for expressing complex intellectual and musical ideas in deceptively simple ways. Her melodies are like nursery rhymes, her lyrics are cutting and conversational, and with LEGACY, LEGACY! she delivers a fiery blend of artistry and activism that rivals peak Gil Scott-Heron. These songs are bold and truthful, tackling heavy subject matter with a delicate touch, commenting on cultural appropriation on “MUDDY” (“They can study my fingers/They can mirror my pose/They can talk your good ear off/On what they think they know”), sexual assault in “SONIA” (“I remember saying no to things that happened anyway/ things that happened/I remember feeling low the mirror took my face away”), and the value of protest on “OCTAVIA” (“It used to be the worst crime to write a line/Our great great greats risked their lives, learned letters fireside/Like a seat on a bus, like heel in a march/Like we holdin' a torch, it's our inheritance”). With songs named after her artistic heroes (a convention that has become a bit trendy, as Rapsody and Sons of Kemet have pulled similar tricks for their recent projects), LEGACY! LEGACY! Is Woods’ audacious attempt to establish herself as an heir to that formidable tradition--one that succeeds without reservation.
2. Raphael Saadiq - Jimmy Lee - A force of nature with one of the most underrated back catalogs in the game (he made hits with Toni, Tony, Tone in the 80s, was a major force behind Neosoul in the 90s and 00s, and produced Solange’s A Seat At The Table in 2015), Raphael Saadiq’s latest is his most powerful effort yet, inspired by the tragic tale of his older brother Jimmy Lee, a heroin addict who died of HIV. Jimmy Lee tries to find the universal through the personal, taking a deep look into how drug addiction can tear a family apart. Throughout the project, Saadiq approaches his brother’s illness with radical empathy, singing from his perspective on the dangerously alluring “Something Keeps Calling,” and the zonked out “I’m Feeling Love.” He uses his personal tragedy as a springboard to talk about larger issues on the twinkling, self-explanatory “This World Is Drunk,” and the seething spiritual “Rikers Island.” The album veers from style to style, connected with a sound effect that mimics a channel changing on an analog TV, encompassing Prince-like grooves, languid quiet storm, simmering funk in the late Sly Stone mold, and taking detours into hip-hop and traditional gospel. Connecting it all is Saadiq’s raw passion, echoing the pain of everyone who’s lost someone to substance abuse, and singing as if his tenor is the only weapon powerful enough to end the epidemic.
1. Yves Jarvis - The Same But By Different Means - There’s a song on The Same But By Different Means called “Constant Change,” in which Jean-Sebastian Audet layers his voice into a cacophonous symphony and repeats the title phrase for 30 seconds til he reaches an abrupt crescendo. In his first project under the name Yves Jarvis (the 22-year Montreal native used to record under the name Un Blonde), “Constant Change” is his animating philosophy, guiding each second of the most surprising masterpiece of the year. A thrilling and unpredictable effort, The Same But By Different Means overflows with sonic and melodic ideas, shifting and beguiling with unexpected shifts and sounds. The album gets its power from this fluidity--sounds burst into the mix and fade away without notice; songs mutate from one genre to another (traces of freak-folk, tropicalía, funk, and a lot more) within the span of 2 or 3 minutes. It’s a hazy, dream-like collage, at times evoking the likes of Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, and Nicolas Jaar; the least expected sound-a-like occurs on “That Don’t Make It So,” which could easily be mistaken for an outtake from D’Angelo’s Voodoo. No hour of music in 2019 was more calming, yet more invigorating than this one--an eclectic and restless monument to Audet’s creativity and an addicting, absorbing soundscape. I listened to hundreds of albums this year, but none of them hit me quite like this one.

Yuki and Candace recently inherited a quaint, modest home from their dearly departed Grandma Behr. Curious teen Yuki absolutely idolizes her amazing Musician sister, Candace, but Yuki’s got some impresive skills of her own. Sure, she may not be the prodigy violinist Candace is, but she can fix and create interesting machines. She’s also quickly becoming Windenburg’s most infamous underground female Inventor.
Because reimagine the townies is a real trend on Simblr since the dawn of the times i thought that i can jump into that trend myself. I will be re-imagine the Windenburg townies as Victorian Residents. Windenburg itself has a very XIX century feel so.. why not!.
First, we have the Behr sisters. some of you might say.. why is Candace’s.. sorry Candy’s hair is black... Platinum hair with bright pink ends on the victorian ages might be something way Avant garde. I relize that her eyebrows are black so her hair must be dyed. On Modern times Candy is a talented DJ Spiner but the closest she would be back in XIX Century is a Musician. So i deleted her DJ Mixing Skills and change it for Violin skills. I imagine her as the famous Camilla Urso. Now, her sister Yuki. In modern times she is a Geeky Computer Wiz (Literally, she has the computer Wiz aspiration) so i choose as inspiration the one and only Ada Lovelace. Yuki is introvert and i picture her as an avid reader (Wich she is.. i mean she is in the Avant Garde reading Club) but i have to delete her Video gaming skills and change them to Handiness Skill. Also, Changed her Aspiration To Reinassance Sim and her Geek Trait to Genius Trait.

James “J Dilla” Yancey
From: Detroit, Michigan
Life: February 7th 1974 - February 10th 2006
Role In Hip-Hop: Producer / Rapper
Associated Acts: Madlib, Common, Slum Village, ?uestlove, De La Soul, Ghostface Killah, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes, J Rocc, Erykah Badu, D’angelo, MF Doom, Bilal, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Illa J
Biggest Influence On Hip-Hop: Production style
Most Famous Work: His final album “Donuts”
J Dilla is to this day one of the greatest hip-hop producers who ever lived. A man who chopped samples like none other before, and that no one could replicate after. His hallmark unquantized drums added a feel and soul to records that hadn’t been seen to this degree beforehand. His talents were recognized at the time to any true fan of hip-hop, and music in general. Being a driving force behind the underground sound of the early 2000′s was one of the many fields Dilla dipped his toe into. Along with being a super producer (and occasionally lead vocalist on solo records) by working with stars like Ghostface Killah, Common, and The Roots, he always worked alongside underground MC’s from his hometown and across the country by being in groups like Jaylib, Slum Village, 1st Down, and The Ummah. An underground king, a mainstream game changer, and a man that has inspired generations of hip-hop artists like no one else could imagine. With his Moog synthesizer and MPC enshrined forever in the Smithsonian, it’s only right that Dilla’s life changing legacy is also recognized in the Hip-Hop Hall Of Fame.
Cordozar “Snoop Dogg” Broadus Jr.
From: Long Beach, California
Life: October 20th 1971-
Role In Hip-Hop: Rapper / Singer / Producer / Songwriter / Entrepreneur / Actor
Associated Acts: Dr. Dre, Nate Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound, Pharrell, Charlie Wilson, Wiz Khalifa, 2Pac, DAM-Funk, Lil Bow Wow, Warren G, Major Lazer, Game, Devin The Dude, Nanci Fletcher, DJ Pooh, Tray Deee
Biggest Influence On Hip-Hop: Longevity
Most Famous Work: His debut album “Doggystyle”
The artists formerly known as Snoop Doggy Dogg, Snoop Lion and Snoopzilla came into the world of hip-hop alongside Dr. Dre with the opening verse to one of the greatest songs in all of hip-hop, “Nothin’ But A G Thang”. With the help of Dr. Dre, 2Pac and Death Row Records, Snoop became a household name and has stayed within our homes for nearly 25 years. With the ability to cruise over every beat ever given to him, Snoop has been able to evolve, experiment, and drop solid projects from the early 90′s to today. His entrepreneurship and overall business savvy has led to deals with Adidas, FIFA video games, and his own youth football league. Acting in movies like “The Wash”, “Soul Plane” and “Baby Boy” allowed for his famously smoked out likeness to be spread to even more demographics allowing him to be deep into every American consumers life. Snoop has stayed consistent and relevant longer then nearly every other living rapper, and with that has helped lay a blueprint for life between and after music.
Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi
From: Cleveland, Ohio
Life: January 30th 1984-
Role In Hip-Hop: Rapper / Singer / Producer / Songwriter / Actor / Director
Associated Acts: Kanye West, Plain Pat, Emile Haynie, King Chip, Dot Da Genius, Andre 3000, Travi$ Scott, Big Sean, Ratatat
Biggest Influence On Hip-Hop: Popularizing sing-rapping and more emotional and introspective lyrical content
Most Famous Work: His albums “Man On The Moon: End Of Day” & “Man On The Moon 2: The Legend Of Mr. Rager″
Kid Cudi in recent years has been less of the prodigal son and more of the black sheep of the hip-hop family. With his off the wall experimentation and battles with addiction, depression, and mental illness Cudi’s career has played second fiddle to our hopes he keeps going. Yet his contributions are never to be forgotten. From his release of “A Kid Named Cudi” mixtape, Cudi has has changed the face of hip-hop. Being a main contributor to Kanye’s “808s & Heartbreak” and his own solo work has led to hip-hop evolving from hard raps and tough drug dealer personas in the mainstream and gave an idol to hip-hop fans who had deeper issues then money and drug dealing. His “Man On The Moon” albums are each masterpiece’s, his features (whether hums, hooks, or verses) are always spellbinding. And though highly criticized, his experimentation into rock music allowed him to become a trailblazer yet again. The modern soundscape of hip-hop would be drastically different, and hip-hop history would be forever changed for the worse if Scott Mescudi never came into our lives.

I still remember going to buy each of these albums which have had a huge influence on me over the years, and I thought that this episode would be a good time to feature them both. We have a mix of original tracks, alternate versions, covers, and original samples, alongside plenty of other tunes to keep your head bobbing!
There are still a few tickets left for Schoolly D and DJ Code Money on December 15th in Manchester - but you might want to be quick!
The Mouse Outfit are playing an Xmas special at Band on the Wall on December 18th - a few advance tickets left for that one too.

Playlist/Notes
Minnie Riperton : Inside My Love
An excerpt of a soul classic from one of our departed greats. Minnie Riperton was well capable of singing well into the whistle register, and demonstrates that to spectacular effect at the end of this track from the essential "Adventures In Paradise" album, which I first encountered as part of "Lyrics To Go"...
A Tribe Called Quest : Lyrics To Go
This sample use was absolute genius. When I first heard this as a teenager I didn't have a clue that the high tone running through the whole track was actually a singer and not a keyboard, and it still stuns you the same way twenty-five years after release. Perfect production, together with Q-Tip and Phife (RIP) on the mic, make this album cut from "Midnight Marauders" every inch of a classic.
Funky DL : Midnight
London's Funky DL first came to popular notice as an MC, but clearly also has major skills as a producer, arranger, and keyboardist! His "Marauding At Midnight" album is a tribute to "Midnight Marauders", with instrumental versions of every track played with no sampled breaks/loops - just instrumentation, as well as backing vocals. "Midnight" was one of my low-key favourites on the original LP, so it's great to hear his take on it here. I couldn't resist the opportunity to cut a few samples over the top :)
Wu-Tang Clan : Clan In Da Front
On my first listen to "Enter The Wu-Tang", this was the track that made me know for sure that the album was a classic. The Wu members regularly battled to see who would get to be on any particular RZA beat, and you can hear for yourself how undeniable GZA was on this one - one of only two tracks on the album to feature just one MC.
The ARE : Clap Ya Hands
The "Manipulated Marauders" project is much older when I look at the release date (2007) than it feels, but still gets solid play from me on a regular basis. The ARE tears up the classic Bob James "Nautilus" sample amongst others to bring some freshness to the familiarity of the Tribe "Clap Ya Hands" track from "Midnight Marauders".
Rockwilder ft. Erick Sermon, Method Man, and Redman : Clutch Reloaded
I missed the original version of this track, but this remix is absolute fire! This might be the most aggro I've ever heard Erick Sermon, and I can't be the only one struck by the combination of "bunch a n****s walking down the block like it's Selma" and the lyric that gave us this month's epigraph. Following Erick, the match made in blunt smoke, Meth & Red, continues the lyrical assault, and Rockwilder's beat is a banger that reminds you of a classic sample atomised. A must-purchase!
Ice Cube : Arrest The President
The man who brought us "I Wanna Kill Sam" back in the 90s is back to burn and has absolutely no problem going in on Mango Mussolini! Atlanta's Shawn Ski provides a stomping, horn-laden beat while Cube calls out Agent Orange for being an asset of Russian intelligence, and his general devilish behaviour. This tune definitely puts you on notice for the upcoming "Everythang's Corrupt" album.
[DJ Quik] Nate Dogg ft. Eve : Get Up (Instrumental)
One of those singles I somehow picked up a couple of a while back and still barely play! The first single from Nate Dogg's third album, it's not crazy but does have that Quik flavour and the beat a good bridge between the bombast of the Cube track and something a little more subdued...
Public Enemy : See Something, Say Something
I was looking for something funky in this spot and this fit the bill perfectly. Chuck D is from the right kind of era to know what to do with a groove like this, and has the experience and intelligence to drop wisdom all over it. Gary G-Wiz is on production on this lyrically clever flip of the Department of Homeland Security slogan, an overlooked track from "How Do You Sell Soul To A Soulless People Who Lost Their Soul?"
El Michels Affair : C.R.E.A.M
Much harder to mix with than I thought, but that's often the case with live bands - tempos are much more likely to shift within the track than with electronically sequenced music! Anyway, this is just one of the many great Wu instrumental cover versions from El Michels Affair, who gave us this tribute to the 36 Chambers classic on "Enter The 37th Chamber". It's always interesting when a band is sampled by a Hip-Hop producer as part of a composition, and then another band interprets that new version.
A Tribe Called Quest & Busta Rhymes : God Lives Through
The original "God Lives Through" included the voice of Busta via a sample from Tribe's own "Oh My God" on the same album, but he wasn't actually on the track. As he says, he always wanted to rhyme on it and here he gets his chance! This version is from the Q-Tip and Busta mixtape "The Abstract and the Dragon", and here I've just gone with the Busta verse and then Phife's - which is the same as the original, hopefully you own it by now :)
Black Milk ft. Fat Ray and Elzhi : Sound Of The City
Detroit time! Black Milk covers the low end lovely with well-engineered kicks and bass driving this track along. The title track to his first solo LP is a worth headliner, and I always laugh at the shade thrown at Mike Jones at the end of the second verse!
Hall & Oates : Method Of Modern Love
A new one to me, but after reading recently that this was the song that inspired the hook to "Method Man", I took a listen and thought I'd play a snippet here. You hear the first eight bars looped up for a couple of minutes, then we let it go so you can hear the introduction of the chorus - then stop the track and merge into...
Wu-Tang Clan : Method Man (Home Grown Version)
...the tune that drew from it! This isn't even the version from "Enter The Wu-Tang", but an alternate version that was on the 12", and is even more raw and lo-fi than anything on the album. It sounds like it was recorded in a basement and probably was, and I'd bet that this was the original, later re-done for the LP. For the turntablist heads, this is the version Mista Sinista used for his killer juggle - solved a mystery for me!
Cypress Hill : How I Could Just Kill A Man
Classic Cypress! Back in the pre-internet days, some New Yorkers thought this crew were locals from the Cypress Hills housing project, but in fact they were from all the way over in Los Angeles. The first album is still my favourite after all these years, and this track was fierce - a hit without even an attempt to soften up for the radio. DJ Muggs layers up legendary breaks for the beat and even has a few bars on the mic at the start of the second verse, while B-Real spits memorable bars on the kill-or-be-killed lifestyle, and Sen Dog jumps in for the hook. Early 90s heat.
Slum Village (ft. Young RJ) : Nitro
Detroit in the mix again, with the 2009/10 lineup in full effect, along with family member Young RJ on the boards and rhyming as well. The beat actually has a lot of RZA feel to it, and I could easily have imagined this on one of the early Wu albums. No slacking on the mic either, everyone represents and make this a tune worth tracking down - I got it on the "Villa Manifesto" LP, but it's not on all versions so look out for that when buying.
Inspectah Deck : R.E.C. Room
I'd forgotten that it wasn't until six years after the release of "Enter The Wu-Tang" that we finally got a solo album from Inspectah Deck, but "Uncontrolled Substance" did eventually arrive - maybe it needed that incredible verse from the start of "Triumph" to create the momentum! I believe this was the lead single, a tribute to the rec room parties from the Wu's youthful days, with a characteristically Wu-Tang beat courtesy of True Master, who cooked up some great tracks over the years.
[DJ Premier] Gang Starr : Just To Get A Rep (Instrumental)
One of those tunes everyone either knows or really should! I think the 12" will have an instrumental on it, but this is taken from a white label instrumental version of the whole "Step In The Arena" LP.
Air Adam : 13th Chamber
I wondered if this was worth including, but if not now, then when? I recorded this maybe 10-15 years ago, and while some of the plain movie samples were just layered over the top from my DVD collection, everything else comes from the turntables! The bassline is a plain tone being modified with the 33/45 button and pitch slider, the drumming is all done with scratches, and then the kung-fu samples that were available on battle tool vinyl (no Serato back then!) were scratched over the top. This was my tribute to/version of Wu's "Wu-Tang : 7th Chamber - Part 2" from the first album, derived from a battle routine I once developed, and was on my "Sleight of Hand" mixtape - a few of you might still have it!
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!

The music this year has been non-stop, hit songs have been popping left, right and centre; and the music industry is enjoying a time of boom. This year, we have had IF, Penalty, Wo!, Living Things, Mama, Come Closer, Juice, For Life to vibe to. This year, we have seen the best of Wizkid, Davido, and Simi. This same year, our sound got heard on the other side, we experienced the wave of the pon pon sound, the infusion of trap music into our sound, even street pop music gained mainstream acceptance and things got better in some areas of our music.
Naturally, we credit our artistes for all the good works, we adore them for meeting our musical yearnings and give them the respect that is meant for the ultimate provider of the music we listen to, but we often forget that without the sound, there is no music. We forget to acknowledge and celebrate the masters of the sound, the lord of keys (not yahoo boys oh) and the brain behind the rhythm – the music producers. To right this wrong, I have made a list of top 10 Nigerian producers of 2017. In ranking the producers, I considered the commercial success of their works, the magnitude of projects they have worked on and their influence on the music culture in Nigeria, for the year being reviewed.
Here is the list.
Masterkraft
Masterkraft has always been known as a top producer and this year, he did not fall our hand. Again, he showed that the chemistry he has with Wizkid still exists, having produced Medicine and Odoo. The crafts’ master is behind a lot of the hit tracks from Flavour’s Ijele album and Banky W’s Songs About U. He also explored the option of releasing an album which housed hit songs like Indomie, Yapa & I Go Dance. Masterkraft’s 2017 success got a boost, as he added jingles like Mayorkun’s Sade, Vector’s Adurah and Tekno’s Yawa to his decent production package for the year.
Young John
The brain behind most sounds that come out of YBNL is Young John. The wicked producer who has been a trend-setter in the area of music production in recent years, was awarded producer of the year at the last Headies award. He still occupies a leading position on the list of music producers, considering his impressive production materials like Wo!, Baby Favour, Love No Go Die and Living Things. Young John’s stock rose even higher with the release of Olamide’s Lagos Nawa album, having almost single handedly produced the entire project.
Sarz
The Wiz of music production and genius of our time. They say it takes a genius to understand a genius, no wonder Wizkid loves to work with the man called Sarz. Sarz is in the class of A-list music producers in Nigeria and this year, he focused on exporting his sound to the international community, having produced songs like Come Closer, African Bad Gyal, on which international artistes like Drake and Chris Brown hopped on. He made other input to Wizkid’s export album, Sounds From the Other Side and the songs he produced includes Sexy and Sweet Love. He also produced Niniola’s Maradona, which is one of the biggest Nigerian songs in the year 2017, likewise Sicker. Not to forget his credits on the production of Tekno’s Be and it all adds up to mean that Sarz has had an impressive year, so far.
Del’B
What a low key genius Del’B is. Low key he produced Mad Over You, low key he produced Mr Eazi’s Tilapia, low key he produced Wizkid’s Craving and low key he found a common sound for Wizkid and Trey Songz to record. Del’B is low key playing a part in the movement to globalize the African sound. In his capacity as a producer, he’s pitched in a couple independent singles while contributing largely to Wizzy’s Sounds From The Other Side. His most recent credit would be for Runtown’s latest single, Energy. In the US, in UK, across the African continent, it’s sounds from Del’B that they’re vibing to. He is definitely one of the leading Nigerian producers in 2017.
Kiddominant
The industry was made to bow down before Kiddominant this year and it was the pon pon sound that the producer used to prevail over the industry forces. His production astuteness contributed to the dominance of DMW in the music industry this year, with some of the best sounds from the label being products of Kiddominant’s studio. His magic hands produced Mama and Fall, the gods would be angry with me if I didn’t put him high on this list
KrizBeatz
Mr pon pon himself, the master of the trending sound this year. He produced Lil Kesh’s Shele Gan Gan and Skales’ Temper that featured Burna Boy; both being sounds that coasted all over the music charts earlier this year. He also hones credit for the production of Runtown’s For Life, Seyi Shay’s Weekend Vibes and Skales’ Booty Language. Among others will include his self-owned tracks, Erima, on which he featured Tekno & Davido, and Boss Whine which had Skales’ input. Krizbeatz summed up his 2017 success with the release of the ADM album. If we want to talk about all that Kriz did this year then we might be here a longer while.
Killertunes
For every praise given to Kiss Daniel in 2017, a shout out should go to Killertunes. Killertunes is one of the secrets behind Kiss Daniel’s success; Sofa and Yeba are testaments to that fact. The low profile producer has exercised his synergy with Kiss on numerous occasions and it has consistently produced well-received materials. This year, he stretched his tentacles to produce on album drops from Skales, D’Banj and DJ Spinall, to include the #2 song on Ghanaian music charts by Becca x Mr Eazi, which is titled Number One, and of course Wizkid’s trending Manya. Without doubt, Killertunes’ trajectory has seen him improve on the previous years, becoming a mainstay in the Nigerian music production scene.
Oscar
Surprised? Don’t be. You wouldn’t see a smoke, if there was no fire. Oscar is on this list for the brilliant job he did on Simi’s album. He could have conveniently recycled sounds on the album but the album came out as a body of work, rich in its diversity, especially in the area of its theme. The credit shouldn’t only go to Simi, her producer should get a share of it. He had to be in sync with her to translate and understand all her ideas and conceptual art, and give it fitting sounds. Oscar produced 12 tracks of the 15 tracks on the album, including her uber familiar and massive singles, Smile For Me and Joromi. For some reasons, I had doubted the synergy I had earlier noticed between Simi and Oscar, but it manifested beyond doubt on the Simisola album and that’s why he is on this list.
Tekno
If the list were about top artistes, maybe, he would be higher on this list, maybe. But I’m sure he would have been number one or two on the list of top artistes of 2016. However this is a list of top producers of 2017 and the slim daddy’s only significant production contribution is IF, plus his good but not great song, Go. But mainly because he produced arguably the biggest song of the year, Tekno makes this list.
Adey
This man doesn’t want to hear the word Pon Pon Pon at all but he is a guru of the new school Afro-pop sound that produced Wavy Level and Juice. He wields the power of the new wavy sound like a newly crowned king and he has become one of the most sought after Nigerian producers. He takes production credit for one of the biggest songs in 2017, Juice, and the song is not only one of the biggest songs in Nigeria this year, it is also one of the biggest Nigerian songs in the UK as well. It sat atop the TooXclusive music chart for more than 10 weeks out of about 20 plus weeks since its release, no other song beats that record this year and a lot of its success can be attributed to the sound, which is a product of Adey’s brilliance.
I had the pleasure and opportunity to attend the first stop of Seven Lions, Tritonal, and Kill The Noise’s North America Horizon Tour at Brooklyn Hangar in, you guessed it, Brooklyn, New York, United States, North America, Planet Earth. Since it’s Halloween weekend, fans were dressed up in various costumes. As I was walking in, I saw a flock of Umpa Lumpa’s, Ash Ketchum with his Pikachu, Mario, a couple of dinosaurs here and there, an extra large maid, Avatars, and ravers (tho I don’t think these were necessarily halloween costumes). The Brooklyn Hangar is a great space for sound. It’s a big wear house with an outdoor space when you first walk in. Since I am from New York City, this falls under the category of #LocalStuff.
We walked in just as Kill The Noise started his performance. I could tell it was Kill The Noise from the outside due to the ground shaking bass. I took an educated guess that it was the veteran bass DJ and producer from Rochester, New York.
Kill The Noise
Kill The Noise threw DOWN for his home state. Playing the heavy stuff right from the start, living on that I don’t give an F attitude with a storyline behind it. The headbangers were out early, as Jake Stanczak was encouraging middle fingers and a true bass head vibe. Below is a video of one of my favorite RL Grime edits of the popular Valentino Kahn song, Deep Down Low.
He gave a shoutout to his friend and popular DJ, Dillon Francis, by playing one of Dillon’s more satire-esque songs. This went along with the “I don’t give an F” attitude; however, still catering to the true bass heads in the crowd.

Kill The Noise would stop from time to time to thank the crowd for coming out. He even stopped to give a history lesson on rave culture in New York, citing the state for having the longest stating rave cultures in the United States. He wanted to make sure there were real bass heads out there, playing his Zomboy’s Like A Bitch remix. He even played a NEW song of his featuring Matt Zoe that you’ll just have to follow KTN to find out what it is.
youtube
Towards the end of his wild set, he still had some time to kill, so he played a song that all true dubstep fans should know. Doctor P’s Tetris. I was in awe from both the historical significance and low end rumblings of the massive sound system.

It was a quick transition from KTN to Tritonals set.
Tritonal
We interviewed Tritonal on the brink of the the Horizon Tour. Click HERE to read the full interview. Tritonal’s set was a super high-energy melodic house set with the occasional riddim for the bass lovers out there. Chad would run around on stage from time to time, pumping up the crowd even further. Tritonians (Tritonal fans) were out in full force supporting the duo. Before entering the festival, I heard a boyfriend begging Will Call to sell them a ticket, “please! My girlfriend loves Tritonal so much, well pay anything to see them.”
They started the energy off high, and kept it fairly consistent throughout. Some of my favorite moments were when they played Hey MaMaMa, with a beautiful African sunset background, when they played their new single, Good Thing, and the confetti, which seemed perfect for their ambiance.
They also played an inspiring tribute to the victims of the natural disasters this year and the Las Vegas shooting. The video below is their remix of See You Again by Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth.

They ended with Alesso and Sebastian Ingrosso’s Calling which is a CLASSIC. It had everyone singing along, even to the synth parts which had no words.

A different vibe for sure; however, I quickly realized the genius in the lineup. With Kill The Noise’s heavy bass vibe followed with Tritonal’s melodic house and high-energy. The combination of the two sets in order were set up to illustrate Seven Lions dynamic nature.
Seven Lions
Again and again, Seven Lions continues to impress me. The DJ, Producer, and instrumentalist from Santa Barbara has been active in the music scene since 2010. What has impressed me the most from his arrangements were the eclectic genre and tempos that he’d put out. One drop would be future bass, the next would be dubstep, the one after that hardstyle, and the one after that electro house. His set consistently kept me on my toes, wondering which genre he’d go with next.
He started off with his single, Freesol.
Seven Lion’s graphics are always scenically beautiful. He’s quite the entertainer with his long hair, wafting at each and every drop, putting his fingers up in original Seven Lions fashion. Being front and center, I had the opportunity to catch up with members of his pride. They had nothing but overwhelming emotions for the shows that he puts on.
@sevenlionsmusic cushed it last night on the first stop of his Horizon Tour 🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁

I was waiting for the moment when he’d bring Kill The Noise back out to play their new single, Cold Hearted.
Overall, I was impressed with the lineup put forward on the Horizon Tour. The musical lineup made sense, and I was never board of a single genre. They played a spectrum of EDM music, and I had a blast dancing, head-banging, shuffling, and boogying with all the creatures of the night.
