Blind Beast (1969) review  Published by grimoireofhorror.com and The Yurei  July 21, 2021
For a long period, I have found myself drawn to extreme cinema. The unapologetic approach to subject matters proscribed in mainstream media has always been more alluring to my cinematic tastes. From Japanese Pinku Eiga to French New Wave, I have tried to explore as much of the genre as possible and moreover, having seen a varied mix of what makes the category both good and bad. Films Like Irreversible (2002) and the portrayal of its subject matter being held in much higher regard than, say, I Spit on Your Grave (1978).
Films that can take an artistic yet brazen view into a world, which have fallen through the cracks of society, often pique my interests more than general splatter movies. One such film that had escaped my attention is the unique tale of sadomasochism that is Blind Beasts.
What Is It?
Blind Beasts (1969) is a Pinku horror/drama directed by Yasuzô Masumura, known for directing such classics such as Hanzo the Razor: The Snare (1973), Manji (1964) and Play It Cool (1970), Yasuzô is most notable for his work in Japanese New Wave cinema. Based on the novel Moju: The Blind Beast written by acclaimed author Edogawa Rampo (a pseudonym based on the name Edgar Allen Poe) and published in 1931.
With the help of his own mother (Noriko Sengoku), sightless sculptor Michio (Eiji Funakoshi) abducts gorgeous model Aki (Mako Midori) and brings her back to his lair; a warehouse populated by demented art objects that mimic female bodies. It’s here where he forces her to endure a series of sadomasochistic mind games. But, as the weeks wear on, Aki becomes deeply immersed in the erotic torment she’s put through, as herself and Michio descend into the animalistic depths of pleasure and pain.
What Worked?
Yasuzô Masumura’s minimalist approach works impeccably for the production. A limited cast and locations give the film an enclosed, bordering claustrophobic environmental energy. Enforced by a phantasmagorical set design, strewn with sculpted, dismembered body parts from floor to ceiling.
An intuitive implementation of light, poignant cinematography and attention to detail are the stand out points of this experience. Blurring the line between fantasy and reality successfully depict the nature of the psycho-sexual story in an expressive manner.
Notwithstanding the nudity related to extreme cinema, Blind Beast is one of the least bloody entries to the genre, choosing to put into effect obscuration and an artistic approach to violence. However, this is not to say that the film isn’t disturbing, managing to be shocking through the acts it represents more than the acts themselves.
What Didn’t Work?
The chase scene between Aki and Machio in the warehouse lacks any urgency for a young lady drugged, kidnapped and having awoke in a strange place. Certainly, more direction to the actress would have been beneficial to the overall flow of the sequence, but this scene does not detract from the overall oppressive feel of the film, nevertheless.
Where Can I Find It?
Blind Beast is available to pre-order on Blu-ray at Arrow Videos webstore. The plethora of features include:
High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation
Original uncompressed Japanese mono audio
Optional English subtitles
Brand new audio commentary by Asian cinema scholar Earl Jackson
Newly filmed introduction by Japanese cinema expert Tony Rayns
Blind Beast: Masumura the Supersensualist, a brand new visual essay by Japanese literature and visual studies’ scholar Seth Jacobowitz
Original Trailer
Image Gallery
Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Tony Stella
Overall thoughts
Blind Beast is an explicit glimpse into unequivocal individualism, unabashed by the taboo subject matter. I enjoyed the film based on how refreshing it is to the extreme cinema genre to not rely on excessive gore to be controversial.
As such, I understand that this film is not going to be to everyone’s taste, especially considering the vivid depictions of the descent into Machio and Aki’s self-destructive relationship that can be tough to stomach. Even with a lack of bloody detail, the character’s enthusiasm towards the sensations, as well as visceral sound effects, reinforce the destructive nature of their affinity.

My thoughts on Hakumyu: Heisuke-hen
I’ll probably talk about it comparing it to Harada-hen, since it’s the only other Hakumyu I’ve watched.
First of all, Junya Ikeda is PERFECT as Heisuke Todou. His cheerful behaviour, the way he talks, how he jumps around,... It really feels as if we were listening to Heisuke. He’s so cute at the beginning when he’s asking the public if there’s a festival or something!
I still prefer Karin Isobe as Chizuru, but Marina Tanoue was a good choice for this route. Seeing how she jumps around during curtain call makes me think she’s a good Chizuru for Heisuke.
And speaking about curtain call, what about the Yuusuke Kashiwagi vs Naota Gomoyo demon jumping face-off? XD I wanted to see that.
I feel sad that Marina and Erika Yanagita just had a few scenes as Chizuru and Sen, they were so cute together :( I hope we get to see more of Sen in future Hakumyus.
I must admit I couldn’t tell the actor for Sannan was different. I love both Ryosuke Mikata’s and Teruma’s performance,
Regarding the rest of the cast, I prefer the actors in Harada-hen (not that the cast of Heisuke-hen performed badly, is just a matter of personal preference).
On the subject of characterization, they dealt better with the Furies’ wigs, at least when it came to Heisuke’s and Sannan’s. You couldn’t see their hair underneath, or at least it wasn’t as noticeable as in Harada-hen. Also, props to whoever had to change Ryosuke’s wigs, since he changes several times in a row at the beginning of the musical. However. HOWEVER. There is something I must address. Some of you have already seen my post about it. WHO THOUGHT KODO’S FAKE BALD CAP WAS OKAY?? Who let poor Manji Edogawa go on stage like that?
As for the songs, they are more like proper, long songs that the ones in Harada-hen. I love the overall theme and rhythm they have, as lively as Heisuke. Also, Kinniku Drunkards XDD
I really like they way they show us there’s a special bond between Sannan and Heisuke, and I find it’s even more noticeable than in the game. Though I found it really funny when, during the final battle, Sannan starts singing with a gloomy music that suddenly changes into a cheerful tune and he starts talking about them being comrades.
Other things about this final battle that I really enjoyed are the bit of Yaisa! in which you can see how everyone else is fighting no matter where they are, and Sannan’s death. It was extremely beautiful, with the cherry blossom petals and all, one of the most beautiful and emotive deaths I’ve seen on a stage.
I didn’t mind the story changes, they are not that big or important and I don’t think there were any loose ties. And thanks for not showing everyone as a Fury like in Harada-hen.
And I don’t remember if there was something else I wanted to say... Overall, I like Heisuke-hen a lot more than Harada-hen. Next will be Okita-hen!

Who are your favorite Hakumyu actors for each character and which is your favorite cast overall?
:D !!!!!!!!
^ my initial, wordless response to this question bc nobody’s asked and I absolutely love talking about and/or swapping HakuMyu preferences
Hijikata: Yazaki Hiroshi (Saito-hen – Kazama-hen)
Okita: Hirose Daisuke (Saito-hen – Toudou-hen)
Saito: Matsuda Ryo (Saito-hen – Kazama-hen)
Heisuke: Ikeda Junya (Saito-hen – Toudou-hen)
Harada: Higashi Keisuke (Reimeiroku – current)
Nagakura: Miyazaki Shuuto (Saito-hen – Toudou-hen)
Yamazaki: Takasaki Shota (Kazama-hen – current)
Kazama: Suzuki Shogo (Saito-hen – LIVE 2)
Amagiri: Gomoto Naoya (Kazama-hen – Shinsengumi Kitan)
Kodo: Edogawa Manji (Saito-hen – LIVE 2)
Any characters I don’t mention, I don’t have a clear preference for and/or have only been played by one actor. But anyway, based on the above, Kazama-hen is almost my dream cast; the only one I’d really change is Harada. One of many reasons Kazama-hen is my favorite musical~
Thanks for asking!!

I'm really curious about the Japanese audience you saw at the theatre. Were most fans younger or older? Could you tell what they were there for - the franchise or the actors? I mean, the games, anime and musical have been out there for years and it's hard to imagine the blend of audiences they attract. What was your impression?
There is a rather interesting mix actually. I was super curious about this too so I’m really glad I got to go find out for myself. Of course it was mostly women but the age range seemed to vary wildly from teens to women older than me (I’m 32). The men that I typically saw in the audience I think were kankeisha’s or industry people.
OH OH OH! Okay so my first show was mostly press and fans but we weren’t really able to pick out anyone noteworthy, but Thursday night Shiramata Atsushi, the actor who played Ibuki Ryuunosuke in Reimeiroku, was a few rows behind me! They tend to usher actors in at the last minute and then off quickly during intermissions, but as the show was ending and we were all filing out to leave I got to kind of be face to face with him. It’s kind of an unspoken rule that you don’t bother actors at shows though so I didn’t say anything, even when he saw me, but I so badly wanted to tell him that I loved him as Ibuki >_
Torigoe Yuuki was also at my Friday afternoon show, and in front of me on the walk back to Shibuya station XD Had he been more someone I liked I think I would’ve actually stopped and said something to him, but again, I was trying to be courteous. I’m sad I wasn’t at the Saturday night show though since Ono Kento, Matsuda Ryo, Miyazaki Shuuto, Edogawa Manji AND Yazaki Hiroshi were at that one ;_; I originally had tickets to it but they fell through. Much pathetic whining was had that night.
Anyway! I’d say as to motivations on why people are there? It’s a mix of both love for Hakuouki and love for the actors. I feel like trading is very much motivated by favorite actors, though sometimes favorite actor and character go hand in hand. Without being able to really talk to anyone in depth though, it’s hard to be sure. Outside of like polite interactions... making friends at these things isn’t easy x_x Especially when you’re a big tall white girl. Maybe if I lived there I’d have more chance to really report on this kind of thing but for now all I have are very shallow observations.

@kento_leo9 I went to see Hakuouki Harada-hen. Sanosuke was cool. I had flashbacks with various memories of when we were performing it. Sano might just be #1 when it comes to roles I'd want to play again. That Sanosuke was shining so much that I felt the leader of the troupe was really amazing. There's nothing that could make me happier than this ^ ^ I hope the day will come again someday that I can do it again...

My thoughts on Saito-hen
I think this is the Hakumyu I like the least out of the four? I’ve watched up to this date. You can really tell it was the first one, mainly in terms of how some of the actors sing and the quality of the songs and the music, though as with Okita-hen, there are some aspects I like that aren’t present in other productions. Now that this has been said, let’s go into detail
The songs with lyrics in English. Why? Why was it necessary? Like “Don’t forget my style”. I don’t think I need to say anything else about that, I’m sure everyone understands what I mean XD
I love the stage divided in three different areas with movable floors and panels. It helps make the production more dynamic in terms of how the characters enter and leave the stage.
I don’t really like this Chizuru... I don’t know why, but I just don’t see Hitomi Yoshida as Chizuru, sorry.
WHERE ARE SANNAN AND KONDOU? ;__; There are SO MANY changes in the story just because Sannan isn’t even mentioned, it’s as if the whole concept of the Fury Corps and the Wate4r of Life investigation weren’t relevant at all to the overall plot.
Hirokazu Amano is not a bad Yamazaki, but I prefer Shota Takasaki :( At least Yamazaki appears in this production... And the same goes for Junji Shimizu, he’s a good Amagiri but he’s not my favourite. HOWEVER, the way he bows during curtain call is the most appropriate for the character out of them all.
I noticed that the choreography during Yaisa! Yaisa! Yaisa! is quite different than in more recent musicals. I was re-watching Harada-hen recently and I feel like you can divide the musicals in “periods” just based on some elements present in this song. While on the subject of this song, why don’t Kazama and Amagiri sing? :(
YUUSUKE KASHIWAGI. OMG. THIS MAN. Can someone write a route for Shiranui, turn it into a musical and have this man as the lead????
Oni no Matsuei reminds me SO FREAKING MUCH to the Team Rocket’s Battle Theme and you can’t change my mind. So now Kazama is Jessie, Amagiri is James and Shiranui is Meowth.
Going back to the choreography, I find it so funny, the choreographer was having so much fun when he was preparing for this production.
Okita is a diva. Period. He steals the spotlight SO. MANY. TIMES. during Saito-hen that sometimes you don’t know which musical you are watching.
On a related note, the pacing and storytelling are really off?? A lot of characters appear way more than Saito and Chizuru and we don't really get to see their relationship developing??? This is something I really disliked, but as it was the first Hakuoki musical maybe they didn’t know if the would be able to do more and they tried to include as many things as they could just in case. Though I find some scenes really unnecessary and think that time could have been used in a different way. For example, even though this is Saito-hen, we don’t know that he was a spy for the Shinsengumi in the Guardians of the Imperial Tomb until he comes back, and the scene where Saito comes back to HQ in the middle of the night, finds out that Chizuru is sick, and takes care of her is nowhere to be found.
Props to the person in charge of changing Heisuke's wig. Really. Great job. AND WHY IS KODO’S FAKE BALD A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER THAN IN HEISUKE-HEN?? How is it possible for it to look way worse with the passing of the years? XDD Poor Manji Edogawa
Gen-san is so funny. I wish they brought him back for more Hakumyus, he’s a great comic relief. The only thing that throws me off is that he looks so young XD
Can we talk about Yamazaki's death?? He’s like “I’m done with this, bye, bitches!”
Saito's transformation was awesome! I think it may be my favourite Fury transformation, I found it so realistic as opposed to the other transformations with lots of running around and jumping and smoke.
And speaking of Saito... Poor Ryo Matsuda was dripping with sweat almost the whole time. But like, the poor man was so drenched in sweat he must have been dehydrating??? GET THAT MAN AN ENORMOUS GLASS OF WATER, A FAN, AND A COSTUME MADE WITH A LIGHTER FABRIC. I felt so bad for him :( But he deserves the world for giving it his all in that situation.
Summarizing, not my favourite but I wish some things were included in other Hakumyus. One of those things being the subtitles? titles? Idk? in Japanese in the Extras. Bring that back!!

Ally, Matsuda Ryo
Today I surreptitiously appeared as a secret guest for Fan Club event of an actor 「Matsuda Ryo」 He is my classmate from the high school, we went to the canteen eating curry together in unity, played the PlayStation games at home, he is my close friend who I spent high school life together with. It has been five years passed since that day when he said at the corridor of the school  , “I will go to Tokyo” to follow my dream , then the day that we got to work together came, it was a very deeply impressive thing. The sight that he chase the dream wholeheartedly in Tokyo is one of the opportunity that he came up to town without doubt.
He’s a smart man who is logical to the core After all, in spite of considerable natural,
he is finally cool human being who is an attractive man. The things to express are different, but, he is my close friend and ally. I was really happy that he called me, we sang and laughed together. Next time, I seem to be able to offer him to do something together , I intended to do my best. Ryo, thank you for the valuable experience. Edogawa Manji-san who made my poor conversation became interesting and talked warmly was very great person,
Suzuki Shougo-san who frankly talked to me, played guitar and sang together in the dressing room.
I am very grateful for both of them   Thank you to all who listened to my songs and bought the CD I will be happy if we can meet again. Finally there is one thing that I want to convey by all means. The Bento in the dressing room was, great delicious…

Some thoughts on Harada-hen
I’ll reserve final judgment for a more polished cut, like a DVD rip, but in the meantime…
Not that too many of you care at all, but it’s always easier for me to determine my opinion if I write it down! Throwing it under a read-more because length; sorry to any mobile users out there…
Re: our new actors –
New Chizuru (Isobe Karin): her voice isn’t quite my cup of tea, but she definitely hits the notes, and it’s ultimately just a stylistic difference so I’m ranking her a tentative tied-for-second with Fujikoso Yumi. She is very Chizuru-esque, after all—and props for drawing her sword once in awhile!!—but there’s simply no beating Tanoue Marina.
New Kodo (Kawamoto Hiroyuki): I really don’t have an opinion, other than Edogawa Manji was better and crazier. Although it’s worth noting that Kawamoto-san’s bald cap is on point, if he’s even wearing one.
New Saito (Naya Takeru): he does an awesome job for a newbie!! (Does anyone know whether he’s actually left-handed?) Honestly, he reads more like Saito than Hashimoto Shohei ever did to me, although of course not as much as Matsuda Ryo since we all know there’s no surpassing him.
New Nagakura (Fukuyama Shoudai): I know he was also in LIVE 2, but I resolved to wait until he played a more central role. I remain unimpressed by his singing, mostly because his voice is so gravelly I can’t really hear the tune. However, acting-wise, he’s spot-on, so I’m extremely happy about that.
New Heisuke (Kizu Tsubasa): likewise, I’ve been waiting for him to shine since LIVE 2. He’s not Ikeda Junya, but he’s cute, and he meshes well with the other two. Also, my big sister senses go off whenever any Heisuke at all drinks the Water of Life or gets emotional, so his non-Junyaness doesn’t stop me from tearing up at crucial moments.
New Sanan (Teruma): I know he was in Reimeiroku, but I only watched it once and had no idea what was going on. I personally think he does an amazing, if more than a little theatrical, job with the fury madness.
New Kazama (Sasaki Yoshihide): I will never not see Suzuki Shogo as canon!Kazama, which doesn’t help my impression of anyone else in the role. Sasaki-san carries the part fine and hits the notes he aims for, but it seems to me like he’s trying a little too hard to imitate Tsuda Kenji in his dialogue.
New Amagiri (Soutaro): …he’s good. I still prefer Gomoto Naoya, but Soutaro-san’s good. Like, he has major resting bitch face, which makes him seem a bit more menacing, but that’s fine considering the character.
Re: the soundtrack –
…I’m a little bit concerned about how quickly Higashi Keisuke seems to run out of breath. Not that it interfered with my enjoyment at all, just something I noticed.
It still kinda hurts in some cases to hear the new cast sing old songs, but they kept that to a merciful minimum (Sasaki Yoshihide singing the last part of “Orokamono Domo Yo” was objectively fine since he hit the notes but PLEASE DO NOT REMIND ME THAT SUZUKI SHOGO IS GONE). I loved the leitmotif-references though…
I really like Saito’s first, teeny-tiny song tbh
The “BEAUTIFUL DRUNKARDS” equivalent doesn’t sound quite upbeat enough to be a real party, but I can forgive it due to the adorable as fuck drunk ninja staggering around in the background, and also because Matsuda Gaku’s hips don’t lie. (Also my literal out-loud reaction to Harada taking off his mini-haori-whatever was “OH JESUS”.)
They brought back “Ano Hi no Chikai” AND ADDED SOME OF THAT SWEET HARMONY HELL YES. They’ve totally upped their harmonizing game since the reboot.
OH MY GOD SHIRANUI GETS A FUCKING SOLO THAT ISN’T A VERSE IN SOMEONE ELSE’S SONG. FINALLY. IT ONLY TOOK LITERALLY 10 MUSICALS JFC. Actually, make that two, counting the one close to the end. Also, is it me, or does he only ever sing about Takasugi? That’s a man in love if ever I’ve seen one (although I’m not sure I’ve seen one). I’m just gonna say Shiranui/Takasugi is motherfucking canon at this point. At the very least, it fits in flawlessly.
NEXT GEN “GIVE ME THE POWER” OH YEAH!!! Different Souji, different Saito, and I actually really like the way these two sound together, although Nayu-san’s voice isn’t as ‘strong’ a foundation for the duet/harmony as Hashimoto-san. Honestly, I was happy because it gave me something I could sing along to.
Sano and Shinpachi’s duet when they were dueling was actually awesome, mostly because of all that amazing harmony~
Re: complaints –
Most of my “but y tho” probably stems from a lack of subtitles and understanding of the Japanese language, so I won’t be mentioning too much of that since they’re minor issues anyway.
It’s usual for them to focus on Chizuru’s interactions with the guy whose route it is, but it still jars me a little that her only interaction after joining the Shinsengumi is with Harada even some time after Ikedaya. In fact, the pacing in general seems a little weird in this one, given that Heisuke and Saito barely even leave before they’re brought back—but of course, that’s certainly not to say this is the only musical with an ‘off’ pace. HakuMyu in general seems to be like that in most cases.
I… don’t understand why they had Yamazaki drink the Water of Life at Toba-Fushimi. Like, Harada’s musical is the definitive feel-good route, so why include something from The Darkest route/musical? You could just as easily have offed Yamazaki offstage, or otherwise had him die in passing, the same way he did in Toudou-hen…
I also don’t know why they decided to transition into the epilogue with Hijikata vs Kazama and a Yaisa! reprise. Like, typically that’s a final-battle interlude, not post-final-battle. Also, it’s completely irrelevant to Harada’s route. Although I’ll own that the Yamazaki-Kondou-Sanan dead-people trio was a nice touch.
Re: highlights –
…Okay, I’m never not gonna think Shiranui figuring out Chizuru is a demon first is the most hilarious thing ever. Like, he never even showed up at Ikedaya in the game, yet here he is going “what’s a demon like you doing in a place like this” in Kazama’s stead. Perfect.
NOT GONNA LIE, LIKE 90% OF WHY I WATCHED THIS MUSICAL IS BECAUSE SHIRANUI IS THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. I WILL NEVER, EVER, GET TIRED OF HIS LAUGHTER AND HIS LITTLE “EH?” AND “HUH?” NOISES AND OH MY GOD. ALSO ONE OF HIS R’S ROLLED AND I THINK I MAY HAVE DIED A LITTLE. I’M MAKING A NOISE LIKE A TRAIN WHISTLE. I JUST. WOW WHAT A CUTIE
It’s kind of a small thing, but I love how subtly Okita’s tuberculosis is introduced. A cough-laugh, then a coughing fit, both quickly cut off by other events, and finally the revelation. Nicely done for a musical that doesn’t focus on him.
I also appreciate how not-prude and curious Chizuru is shown to be from the beginning. Any Chizuru who participates in a drinking song without being coerced, and even carries a sake cup of her own instead of just pouring others’, is 100% fine by me.
I’m in absolute fucking love with how they handle Shiranui’s interactions with Chizuru. Just the right mix of antagonism and playfulness.
OH MY GOD HARADA HAS TO BEND PRACTICALLY FUCKING DOUBLE TO KISS CHIZURU. THIS IS ADORABLE
Speaking of adorable, Nagakura’s confusion during the “we’re leaving the Shinsengumi” scene is priceless. I have no idea what’s happening, but it’s really fucking cute.
It’s kinda nice to see where Kazama’s loyalties really lie on Harada’s route, since we never see that in-game. Like, Shiranui thinks he’s on Kodo’s side, so that colors our perception, but… evidently not. Of course, it could just be that they’re apparently integrating Sanan’s treachery into Harada’s route too, but…
HOLY SHIT THE EMOTION IN OKITA’S VOICE WHEN HE CONFRONTS HIJIKATA AFTER KONDOU’S DEATH. It takes a lot of skill to make me tear up at a scene I’ve seen acted out like 50,000 times before in the previous installments of HakuMyu. You can really see the 8-year-old Souji shining through. AND THEN THAT PUNCH OUT OF NOWHERE!! ON POINT.
Edit: Oh I guess I should spare a mention for the fact that The Scene actually happened, yup. Not that I’m not happy with what foreplay we were given, since I thought for sure they’d just shove it offstage, but it was so… stationary? Although letting Chizuru top before the fadeout was definitely a nice touch.
I am a-ok with Kazama offing Sanan tbfh although it did leave the non-Junya cinnamon roll an orphan of sorts. Also Hijikata as mama bear is the best thing. Honestly, I really like the interpersonal dynamics between members of the Shinsengumi as they’re portrayed here.
GOOD JOB STABBING YOUR EVIL FATHER CHIZURU!!!!!!!! That’s more than any other Chizuru ever did, even Heisuke’s spunky gal~
CURTAIN CALL MOMENTS: Kazama and Hijikata doing the nightclub two-step and staring into one another’s eyes; the extras jumping around and high-fiving one another and one of them spinning Souji around; some confrontation between Harada and an extra over Chizuru; Shiranui getting really emotional about having been around since the beginning (AW POOR BABY WITH THE BROKEN VOICE); Harada having moments with both Shiranui and Chizuru (I’m beginning to form a polyamorous OT3)
