Wasp-posting-wednesday!!
Ever heard a wasp tantrum before?
She (a great golden digger wasp, sphex ichneumoneus) was trying to dig a hole for her offspring, but the blades of dead grass were getting in her way. So while trying to grip and tear them out, she was buzzing and huffing which made it look as if she was having a tantrum. Pretty funny and cute. Turn up your volume to hear her squeak!

[VIDEO AND PHOTOS TAKEN: JUNE 9TH AND JUNE 8TH, 2023, RESPECTIVELY | Video and Image IDs: A video and five photos of orange, yellow, and black great golden digger wasps digging nests in dirt. In the video, the wasp is in the middle of digging before it notices a piece of glass and attempts to carry it away from the dig site, seeming satisfied with where it ends up putting it, proceeding to go back to move more things around /End IDs.]
This is the thing I've been looking forward to posting the most this month!! This wasp simply does not like the presence of the glass it seems- Honestly I think great golden digger wasps are some of my favorites just from a visual standpoint :]

Sphex ichneumoneus
aka Great Golden Digger Wasp or Great Golden Sand Digger
This wasp hunts Grass Hoppers and Crickets to feed to its babies and wasps don't collect pollen but the adults do drink flower nectar and at least today they like this flower's nectar. Once they have had enough they will go hunting grass hoppers again. They can get quite busy and you are safe enough as long as you don't start arguing with them about who's food this is.

@goodluck-milo submitted: I was up in Pine, AZ over labor day weekend looking for Dynastes grantii and I only found 1 but I also found a Xyloryctes thestalus couple and lots of other fun bugs!! Here are some ones I got good pictures of to identify. There was a large mystery bug I kept seeing around but I never got a good picture for ID.
Tumblr media
A wasp with a caterpillar victim. Not sure if it’s the paralyzing kind or the egg-injecting kind 🤔
Tumblr media
Another mystery wasp polinating some flowers. This one was very big!
Tumblr media
A small bee I found in the ashes of our fire pit when I was preparing a fire!
Tumblr media
And a cute pink and yellow moth
Tumblr media
And this lil guy who landed right on me! I’m thinking three-lined potato beetle for this one but I’m not sure.
Enjoy the bugs! Thank you for bringing wonderful crawlies to my feed.
How exciting you got to see a few rhinoceros beetles! They’re always fun to see. The first wasp on the caterpillar appears to be one of the thread-waisted sand wasps in the genus Ammophila. They will paralyze their prey and bring it back to their nest for their larvae to nibble after they hatch out of their egg.
The second large wasp pal looks like a great golden digger wasp or similar in the same genus, Sphex. The bee is very tiny and precious but I am terrible at IDing bees so I’m not even gonna attempt it. The cute moth is a tiger moth in the genus Apantesis, and the last stripey beetle fellow could be a three-lined potato beetle, but there’s another very similar species that it also could be - the three-lined Lema beetle, Lema trivattata. Thanks for sharing!

Couple days ago I saw a great golden digger wasp (her fluff was so golden!) flinging dirt around in the firepit. They're gorgeous and practically impossible to piss off, very cool little friends to have around. I don't know how to tell her that those tunnels are going to flood though...
also bonus red-spotted purple butterfly.

So there's a Great Golden Dugger Wasp that is digging a tunnel right outside the back steps
I tried to discourage her by putting rocks over the tunnel but she is NOT TO BE DISCOURAGED. We'll just have to be mindful of her I guess lol she buzzes you if you walk by but otherwise has not been aggressive

Foaming at the mouth at the absolute biodiversity in my yard this year! We have this bush in the yard that the wasps, bees and flies are obsessed with, which is where I took most of the pictures.
I also noticed these HUGE flies which I've never seen before. Usually if you even look in the general direction of a fly it immediately takes off but these ones could not care less, I could put my hand right up to them and they didn't move until I physically touched them.
Also once again completely baffled by the people who talk about how "aggressive" and "mean" wasps are and how they constantly get stung. What are you guys doing??? None of the above species gave a single shit about me shoving my macro lens in their faces, and if it was windy I would sometimes grab the branch they were on to hold it steady and none of them even reacted.
The queen bee (which has a stinger unlike the males) also made no effort to sting me, after picking her up for a photo she actually refused to get off of my hand because she wanted to sit on me and groom her face.
We've also had lots of yellowjackets (I'm so bad at IDing them so no idea on species) approaching us recently and checking us out, flying extremely close and looking at us and then flying away. Even if I put my hand up in front of them to see if they want to land they sort of just look at it and then fly away.
Last year there were paper wasps on nests in my yard and they would stare at me warily but never sting me when I photographed them.
Also feel free to ID things on my iNaturalist or correct me on any IDs here!

Great Golden Digger Wasps
apparently a Great Golden Digger Wasp is non-aggressive to people and pets and are great natural pest killers. They also seem to not care at all what insect they find-
don’t read more if you are easily disturbed by insects. (Especially wasps-)

This thing hunted a grasshopper that is 3 times its size as a meal.

Here’s Yet Another Interesting Pollinator that Can be Found on Tickseeds
Here’s Yet Another Interesting Pollinator that Can be Found on Tickseeds shows a great golden digger wasps that was photographing on a day when there were many insects out and enjoying the flowers.
Digger This summer Leavenworth’s tickseeds (Coreopsis leavenworthii) flowers are everywhere. They are always abundant during the summer, but there are more than usual this year. I have posted several insects that I have recently found in the tickseeds including two types of scoliid wasps, an assassin bug, and my favorite little moths, the spragueia moth. Along with those guys, another frequent…

it's funny to me thinking about the sheer scale between the macrovolutes in Humans-B-Gone! and other bug characters (such as my own)- I have to wonder how Sophodra would react to classic "furry" style/anthro bugs
[Image ID: A low poly 3D render of Sophodra, a giant green mantis from the series 'Humans-B-Gone!', looking down at Sphex, an anthropomorphic great golden digger wasp, who is looking back up at her, both of them are surprised to see each other /End ID.]
