Sorry about the lack of regular updates, I've been way too busy lately. But here's a shot of what my desk currently looks like - covered in toys from previous photos.
And an outtake from my last Jojo post.
I have my camera shutter set to voice commands. It helps keep the camera steady for long exposure shots - but the downside is anything that's playing on the speakers might set the shutter off. And then I end up with a dozen shots like that second one... Oops!

Hero Vision Vol.37 (2010/Summer) ft. Kamen Rider OOO Cast Members Watanabe Shu & Miura Ryosuke Interviews (translations below)
Publication: September 7, 2010
Watanabe Shu (Eiji Hino)
"Playing the role of the main character Eiji Hino and Kamen Rider OOO in "Kamen Rider OOO," is Watanabe Shu-kun. He's always thought, "I've always wanted to become a Kamen Rider," and the passion he has for this production has only seemed to have intensified. Watanabe-kun has only just started to create the role, but what's the main appeal of OOO and Eiji? We present to you this hot interview."
-I'm going to become a Kamen Rider!-
Ever since my first year of elementary school, starting with "Kamen Rider Kuuga," I've watched all of the Heisei Kamen Rider series in real time. At first, seeing a Kamen Rider defeat a monster was just so cool, and I couldn't stop watching. Around the time of the third series, "Ryuki," and fourth series, "Faiz," I was able to better understand even the smallest of details, and I began to think, "I'm going to become a Kamen Rider!"
While I continued to think like this, the chance to audition for "Kamen Rider OOO" was presented to me. I was more determined than any of the other contestants to win the audition, and it's not an exaggeration to say that I was putting my life on the line. That's why when I was chosen, I was so happy that I burst into tears.
Out of all the Heisei Kamen Rider series, the one I like the most is Kamen Rider Faiz. When he transforms, this area (his face and the 5 sections of his body) beeps and lights up, and when he does a Rider Kick, there's a flash of red…..the transformation and battle scenes are really cool!
Not only Faiz, but I've been influenced by the previous works of my seniors in many ways. In particular, when the Producer told me that Eiji's character is similar to that of Ryuki's main character (Shinji Kido), I had a fresh new look on him.
However, I don't want to end up copying his character, rather, I want to make sure that Eiji's own character comes through. When I think, "The feeling of Eiji," it's…..that he doesn't sweat the small stuff, and that he doesn't care about looking cool. Still, he'll face anyone directly, and has a strong will to protect what he wants to protect at all costs. I think that Eiji's a very straightforward guy. I also think the fact that he carries around nothing but his underwear and some coins means that he doesn't worry about appearances. My personality is that I also don't sweat the small stuff (laughs), and I'm not shy, so I have many similarities with Eiji. I'd like to play the role of a reliable hero by incorporating the coolness of Eiji and OOO into my own personality.
-A carefully crafted transformation scene-
It's been about 3 weeks since filming began (this interview takes place in early July), but the scale of the show's production was beyond my imagination. From the number of people involved, the methods used for filming, and everything else was massive. I get really excited when I think about being in such a production. I'll never forget the excitement I felt when I filmed the transformation scene for the first time! In Kamen Rider W's film (Kamen Rider W Forever), there's a scene where OOO appears, and by saying, "Henshin!," I realized just how hard I'd been working to get here……and I almost started to cry without thinking.
OOO's transformation is so cool! There's lots of attention to detail, like with the 3 medals in the belt and the elaborate moves. The Action Director, (Tsuyoshi) Miyazaki, came up with the basics, and we worked together on the detailed hand movements and positions. I suggested that since my left hand was facing the camera, my palm should be facing towards it, and also thought up ways of saying, "Henshin!" It's an important scene throughout the show, and I want to create the image of Eiji and the hero that I envisioned, so I was very specific about it. In W's film, Eiji is supposed to have experienced transforming many times before, so I made sure he looked confident. But, the transformation in the first episode of our main story is Eiji's first transformation, so it gives off a fresh feeling. I hope you enjoy both!
On days where I was taught how to pose, I'd practice by myself at home until midnight. In my mind, I created the image of becoming OOO as if I were in CG (laughs). I can't wait to see it, as the end result will be even better than that. I definitely have to go to the preview screenings! (laughs).
Eiji's a guy who's on the move alot, so I'm looking forward to seeing more action scenes. We shot alot in episodes 1 and 2, with me being grabbed by the monsters, being thrown around, being blown up, and rolling around. I'm still abit awkward at it, but with the help of Director Miyazaki and Suit Actor (Seiji) Takaiwa-san, I hope that in the end, I'll be able to jump off a building.
Ah, I mean, I want to improve that badly, but whether I can really do it or not is another story! (laughs). My dream is to punch and kick the monsters untransformed, so I'd like to make that happen too. If I keep talking about it like this, it'll come true someday, right? (laughs).
-Teamwork is the best!-
Things are so much fun on set. Ankh's actor, (Miura) Ryosuke-kun, is currently 5 years older me, and Shintaro Goto's actor, (Asaya) Kimijima-kun is 3 years older, but once I started talking to them, we quickly became friends. Miura-kun is the person I interact with the most in my role, so we're often together on set, and we talk about things other than acting, like my favorite manga (laughs). You get to know Miura-kun as he performs during filming. When the cameras aren't rolling, we talk about different topics, and I'd to get to know Miura-kun better when we're not acting.
As for Kimijima-kun….I was already a fan (laughs). When I was in middle school, I saw Kimijima-kun as a model in a fashion magazine, and it made me happy. Both of them are like kind older brothers, so I think it'll be alot of fun for the 3 of us to be in the same dressing room together.
We're off to a good start, and I have a feeling that the teamwork on set will keep getting better. We'll create an interesting show together, so please look forward to it!
-Watanabe Shu's Body-
Head: I'm a super positive person, so I just get through everything with the attitude of, "Well, I'll just figure it out." Who do I take after…..maybe it's a mutation? (laughs).
Ear: I've been told that I have "Hell Ears," because I carefully listen and remember the various things people say (laughs). I don't have any piercings…..making a hole looks like it'd hurt.
Eyes: I used to play sports, so my eyesight is well developed. I can even dodge punches, which I think will help me with action scenes!
Nose: I'm sensitive to the smell of food, and can guess what kind of food it is without looking. By the way, I love the smell of meat. I'm like a cave man (laughs).
Hand: I like to draw, and got the highest scores in art. But, I was more involved with sports, so now I'm abit rusty. Women probably prefer slimmer fingers anyway (laughs).
Mouth: I'm not shy at all, so even if I just met someone, I'll talk to them as much as I can. In other words, I'm annoying (laughs).
Foot: I'm fast! I used to run short distance and hurdle races, but I'm especially good at 400 meters races, and once took 3rd place in a prefectural competition with a time of 51.24 seconds!
Mind: I don't get upset about things too much. Maybe it's because a girl called me "insensitive" when I was in elementary school. Now that I think about it, that word seems to carry a serious meaning (laughs).
OOO: The theme of OOO is "Desire," and my "Desire" was to become a Kamen Rider. I think it's because I kept that in mind that I was able to encounter this production. Now, OOO is "Desire" itself. _
Miura Ryosuke (Ankh)
"Playing the double role of Shingo Izumi, a detective, and Ankh, the monster who possesses him in "Kamen Rider OOO," is Miura Ryosuke-kun. With the aim of, "Playing a beloved monster," he seems to be exploring for new ways to express himself everyday."
-Aiming to become a beloved monster-
I met with the Producer and Director through an interview, where I was given the opportunity to be apart of this production. The day before the interview, I was so nervous because my mind was racing (bitter smile). But, in order for people to understand you, you have to enjoy yourself, so that's what I did, and from the beginning, everyone talked to me in such a friendly manner…..I immediately felt relaxed and at ease.
When I was chosen for the role of Ankh, I thought to myself, "I'm grateful." I've been an actor for about 9 years now, and I was afraid that I'd only be doing on the spot performances. But, I now feel that it's because of my previous experience that I was able to get a role that'll last as long as a year. That's why I'm "grateful."
After filming began, the separation of the roles for Shingo Izumi and Ankh become a major point for me. Director (Ryuta) Tasaki, who shot episodes 1 and 2, asked me to, "Make some differences," for my tone of voice, facial expressions, and movements. Looking at the script, it's obviously different. But, when I tried playing the role, it was very difficult. Shingo becomes possessed by Ankh in the first episode, so we don't know much about his personality. His younger sister (Hina Izumi, played by Riho Takada-chan) is worried about him, so we know he's a good older brother, but, I think he's actually more of a troublesome brother, which is why his sister is so strong (laugh). I'm looking forward to finding out what kind of person Shingo is through Hina.
I'm still struggling with Ankh. The only thing I've clearly decided on, is to make him a "beloved monster." This was also brought up by Director Tasaki. Ankh's ideas and actions are pretty mischievous. One example is in episode 2, when he ate some popsicles, saying the reason was he wanted to, "Get some nourishment" (laughs). I'm sure that if I play the role without hesitating, my character will be loved by everyone. I wonder if Ankh will become more like a human by being with Eiji, or if a monster will always stay a monster…..I can't wait to see how things turn out.
Before we started filming, we had 2 rehearsals, but for the first one, time went by and I wasn't really grasping anything……I was certain that everyone was worried and wondering, "Is this guy gonna be okay?" I was so frustrated, that I would watch anime that reminded me of Ankh, I just couldn't stop thinking about him. I began to think that there was more to him than just being a right hand, and that there was a "heart" to him. Then, at the second rehearsal, I was able to get into being Ankh. The Director actually told me, "You're overdoing it" (laughs), but, those words helped me to get rid of any doubts, and I began to understand the "balance" of being Ankh.
-Creating Ankh together-
I'd like to draw your attention to the craftsmanship of Ankh's arm. It's been finely crafted down to the smallest details, and is very beautiful. It made me wonder how great it'd be to design the whole body. I can't tell you what material it's made of, as it's a trade secret (laughs), but, it's so light that I no longer feel uncomfortable wearing it. The index and middle fingers are my own fingers sticking through, so I can make detailed movements.
I've learned alot from Eitoku-san (Suit Actor), who moves Ankh's arm. Even though only his arm is shown in the show, he uses his whole body to express himself to the fullest. Just when I was thinking that I didn't want to be outdone, I had a very happy experience. The scene in the first episode where Ankh possesses Shingo was expressed through my own arm…..When I performed the moment when Ankh enters his arm and takes over, the camera man called Eitoku-san over and said, "Eitoku, this is how the acting should be done." The person who was filming was able to understand my performance. It made me incredibly happy. It made me think, "I can really do it as Ankh!" Through Eitoku-san and Ankh, I'm learning the importance of expressing my thoughts and feelings from the tips of my fingers, toes, and head.
The Director, makeup artists, costume designers, lighting crew……all of their hard work has been positive, and has helped me with becoming Ankh. I'd like to express myself as much as I can so that you can see it in a better way.
As of now, many of the actors are younger than me, but in the past, I'm often the youngest on set. I'd like to view this from the perspective of an older brother…….I want to, but it's abit difficult (laughs). The teen cast members are all so strong, that they often end up helping me out.
I think that (Watanabe) Shu is "free" in a good way. He says things like, "I want to express it in this way," without hesitation. In this world, people tend to hold back by saying, "I can't do this," or, "I can only do this much," but Shu doesn't have such an attitude. That's why I feel good and at ease when we're together. His presence in my life has grown so much, that I feel like we've already been together for a year. The only thing I wish he'd stop talking about, is his favorite manga. Every day when he comes to the set, he asks me, "Miura-kun, have you read this one?" I'm not really into reading manga, so one of my favorite things to say right now is, "Will I last a year….?" (laughs).
I'm grateful for being on such a set where we can have such innocent conversations. I'd like to build a relationship with Shu and all the cast members, so that we can motivate and support each other even during the hardest shoots. I'd like to work with everyone to grow not only within the work, but myself over the next year.
-Miura Ryosuke's Body-
Head: I'm someone that wants to have "fun." I want to take things in a fun direction, and for people to think, "He's smart." I don't want to show my efforts behind the scenes.
Eyes: I may have a hard time looking at people and other things. But, the feeling of taking in everything is always there. Because by doing so, I'll encounter something that'll move my heart.
Mouth: I like talking, but I'm not good at it. I'm often asked, "What was that last part?," because I tend to get carried away and say things too quickly…..
Nose: Like laundry fresh out of the dryer, I like scents that give off a warm feeling (laughs). Sleeping on them is ideal. Floral fabric softeners are the best.
Mind: I've always been stubborn, and I'm very consistent when it comes to my way of thinking. In order for people to understand that, I have to be firm with myself first.
Foot: I'm not slow, but I don't think I'm fast either. I do like to exercise and dance, and I like to just move my body. I'd be happy if I can make use of that in my action scenes.
Ear: I have really good ears. Even when I'm talking to someone, I can hear the conversations of those next to me, and I'll get angry and say, "What'd you say?!" (laughs).
OOO: This is the "start" for me. I'm confident that what I learn here will remain with me for the rest of my life, so I want to make this an important first step for me.

Perks Of A Superheroine Girlfriend
OPEN GIRLFRIEND RP (Pre-established relationship)
Tumblr media
"What a day...." Neon mumbled as she lay on her lovers, your muses, lap. The heiress to the Kurama family fortune, social media icon, and one of the many heroes of Japan known as Kamen Rider Na-Go, was home alone with your muse. The two of you, alone together in your shared apartment
It had been a long day for the young woman. A planned six hour straight stream with non-stop dancing, and being interrupted halfway through during a monster attack to Japan leading to a cancellation... And she started it up again an hour later, continuing the stream and adding an EXTRA hour to it. The woman had been working hard for eight hours and she certainly needed to de-stress
Tumblr media
A gentle sigh slipped out her lips as she just sat there for several long moments. The streamer rubbed her eyes for a few long moments. Tapping her fingers against her arm for a few moments, she just... Lay there. Thinking, as she looked around their apartment. Very modest, the way she liked it. With a bunch of music theming everywhere
"You know... If it wasn't for you, baby, I'd probably have gone crazy by now." She mumbled with her eyes closed. Just staying there for a few more moments, a smile spreading across her lips "I think... You deserve a treat~!" She grinned
Slipping free from your muses lap, Neon quickly got to her feet. Doing a small twirl before coming to a stop, grinning at your muse
"Time for us to have fun~!" Neon winked "Good thing your girlfriend's a super heroine~!" She cheered, attaching the high tech belt to her waist. The DesireDriver flashing a bit as she was quickly enveloped in light "Henshin~!"
Entry~!
In a flash of light, Neon was in her superheroine form. Kamen Rider Na-Go. The super tight costume showed off her every curve as she gave a flirty wink "Ready to unleash your desire~" she winked the moment before the helmet finished spawning. The eyes flashing orange for a moment before returning to their natural black state, the cat themed armour and Spandex so tight as she teased the zipper between her thighs.
The tight suit showing off every curve like a sensual invitation

That post about Higuchi Kouhei and his cat got me thinking about some other tokusatsu-to-BL pipeline actors that are on current or recent BLs, so I thought I'd do a screenshot post about Kamen Rider Revice, a recent toku series that features two lead actors who star in current BLs, plus an actor in a smaller role who was part of a side couple in a BL series that recently completed a second season.
The main character of Revice is Igarashi Ikki, played by Maeda Kentaro, currently playing Ohara Yamato in I Can't Reach You. His siblings are very central to the story as well--by the end of the series, the story is centered around his whole family. Ikki's younger brother Daiji is played by Hyuga Wataru, currently playing Yamasuge Ryuiji in If It's With You.
Here they are having a bath in the opening credits for the show (the Igarashi family runs a public bath house).
Tumblr media
I should say at the outset that I can't entirely recommend Revice, especially to folks who don't already have some tokusatsu-watching under their belts. It's a hot mess in a lot of ways. But it does have some really outstanding highlights. The best aspects of the series, in my book, were:
Kagerou (Daiji's demonic alter ego),
George Karizaki (my beloved),
Igarashi Sakura/Kamen Rider Jeanne (the most formidable female Rider I've seen in any series in the franchise), and
the relationship between Sakura and Natsuki Hana (a rare example of a convincing Sapphic ship in a franchise well known for "heated drama between men").
I'm not going to get into 2 and 3 here, as tempting as that would be, but I'll include as much of 4 as time/space permits.
It might seem weird that I'm not recommending a series with some of my favorite characters in the entire Kamen Rider franchise AND a relationship between girls that is a hair's breadth from being canonically queer. It's just too much of a trainwreck to endorse as a whole. But as I said, the highlights are really something.
One of the biggest issues I had with Revice was that Ikki, the protagonist, just isn't a very compelling character. As a result I don't think Maeda Kentaro really got to show the range of his acting abilities in this series. (This just makes me more curious to see him in ICRY. From the excerpts I've seen so far, it seems like he shows a really different side of himself.)
Maeda appreciators might still enjoy the many determined faces and creepy smiles he gets to dish out in this series. Here's a sampling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's possible they'll want to look away when he starts doing things like this, though.
Tumblr media
Fans of both Maeda and Hyuga might enjoy some of their scenes fighting side by side, including doing their various henshin poses (the moves they do before they transform into their masked Rider forms).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or when they do things like this bonkers flying kick.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, Daiji is a more interesting character than Ikki, so Revice gave Hyuga some more challenging things to do. I thought Hyuga also just really made the most of every opportunity the show presented to him. He was seriously impressive. This is the reason I was sold on IIWY the moment I saw the announcement about it based solely on Hyuga's involvement.
Here's a sampling of Hyuga as Daiji.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to playing Daiji, Hyuga also played Kagerou, Daiji's aforementioned demonic alter ego. Kagerou was formed from thoughts and emotions that Daiji repressed. The biggest of these was his resentment toward Ikki. But apparently Daiji had also been repressing a desire to be a somewhat gender non-conforming goth, because that's Kagerou's other raison d'etre.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In some ways, it's hard to imagine a character more different from Ryuji. If they have anything in common, it's the fact that they both place a high value on honesty.
One other thing that's worth noting about Hyuga's work on Revice is that he was only 17 when the show premiered. He showed major dramatic range in this part, not only playing two very different characters but doing everything from low-key nuanced scenes to bombastic high drama. Not to mention the stunts! Doing all of this at 17 is seriously remarkable.
Now for our bonus dude! There's a secret evil-fighting organization called Weekend that secretly keeps tabs on the Igarashi family for years before coming out of hiding to join the big central battle of the series. One of the Weekend operatives is Ushijima Hikaru.
Tumblr media
Look familiar? Maybe not, he didn't make faces like this on his BL series.
Tumblr media
How about now? Yep, it's Oku Tomoya, who plays Hanabusa Asuka on both seasons of Minato Shouji Coin Laundry.
Oku has some big scenes and interesting moments in Revice. He does some romantic pining, goes through big-time loss, does quite a bit of martial-arts sparring, gets seriously injured, and more. He even gets to henshin a few times. Here he is getting ready to do just that with Sakura and Hana. Those Weekend uniforms are pretty hardcore in a 70s flight attendant sort of way, but I feel like Oku really sells it here.
Tumblr media
While we're on the subject of Sakura and Hana, I feel like I can't mention their relationship without including some moments where their story came particularly close to tipping into full-on yuri.
Tumblr media
If you're going to do an enemies-to-lovers story, why not make them full-on superhero nemeses?
Tumblr media
The word "date" might not technically get used by the characters, but there's no mistaking that the amusement park hangout Sakura invites Hana on--while she is still a fully-functioning bad guy, I might add--is definitely a date.
Most of the time when a Rider beats their nemesis for the final time they don't hold each other tenderly in the sunset.
Tumblr media
By the end of the series, they're in a big tub together at the Igarashi's bath house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are tons more examples but you get the idea. If this isn't borderline-yuri I don't know what is.

You know, I think the dude who's job it was to uphold a system of exploitation and violence having a henshin jingle that's just his belt screaming "ENFORCEMENT OF VIOLENCE" might be the most unsubtle thing Takahashi's ever written.

Sanji and his brother(s), and Kamen Rider?? (also, sun and moon... and dragons)
Credits to this Twitter post that mentioned that Sanji seems to take inspiration from Kamen Rider Black.
When I poked around that a little, surprisingly the similarity fits not just Sanji, but his brother(s) too. I put the plural in brackets because Kamen Rider Black only has one brother, and I'm not sure if the lore necessarily fits into all 3 of Sanji's brothers. Maybe it's just one of them.
I'm going to start with a long winded summary of the Kamen Rider part first, so bear with that one second before I dive into the Sanji stuff.
(also it veers off into utter madcap theory about mythology again)
Kamen Rider Black's protagonist, Minami Koutarou, lost his parents at a young age and was adopted by his father's friend. He gained an adoptive brother, who coincidentally has the same birthday date as him (so, not blood related, but "almost twins" in a way).
The two brothers were kidnapped by the evil alien/monsters to be become candidates of their new King. Koutarou was to be implanted with the Sun Stone to become Black Sun, and his brother Nobuhiko implanted with Moon Stone to become Shadow Moon.
Koutarou's adoptive father/Nobuhiko's father had "sold" his services to the evil group in exchange for research funds, so he had to participate with the experiments (including experimenting on his own sons). However, knowing that their personalities/memories are going to be erased in the process, he intervened to save them, and was killed in the process.
Only Koutarou made it out, while his brother was left with the evil group. Koutarou gained powers, but still had his humanity, so he became the superhero Kamen Rider Black. His brother, who ended up losing his humanity, became the evil fighter Shadow Moon.
This is similar to what Sora did for her kids. The details of the circumstances are different, but the rough summary of it matches.
Other similarities include the fact that Kamen Rider Black and Shadow Moon aren't actually wearing protective suits or armour. The armour-like appearance is actually "exoskeleton"/hardened skin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(text is Google Translated from the Kamen Rider official site just to save time, so the wording is somewhat funny but it should still make sense)
Kamen Rider Black looks like that because when he "henshin", he transform into a grasshopper-like alien form first, then his skin hardened into that armour-like appearance. Shadow Moon is permanently in the "armour" form, and doesn't seem to have a human form anymore (at least in the original series).
While Sanji can "henshin" back and forth between normal state and exoskeleton (for now), his brothers just have the exoskeleton permanently.
Edit: Also, the way the Germa raid suits are activated is very similar to how a number of more modern Riders activate their belts to transform:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, now we have established the similarity, but what does it mean?
Possible foreshadowing
In the sequel series, Kamen Rider Black RX, Shadow Moon regained his humanity and helped Kamen Rider Black, but dies in the end.
I sure hope this is not what's going to happen to Sanji's brothers, but it's not an unlikely possibility for the plot to go this way.
Sun and Moon
This is where it really goes into galaxy brain hyperthink. Feel free to ignore from this point onwards if that's not your vibe.
Black Sun and Shadow Moon sounds like they can imply solar and lunar eclipses. Lunar eclipses can be "red", when it happens in the form of the "blood moon". If Sanji's abilities ("black leg", "stealth black") is a reference to Kamen Rider Black, then if Shadow Moon's counterpart is just one person, then it might be Ichiji, the "red" one.
And besides, in some parts of Japanese tradition, "red" can be seen as the opposite of "black". Black is the colour of the north and represents the element water, red is the colour of the south and represents fire.
Aside from that, old Japanese traditions view black as "night", and red as "the sun/sunrise". Thus, opposites, as well as reaffirms the sun/moon-night/day imagery.
The sun and moon tomoe
A sub theory of the above. While Ichiji's power seems to be meant to be "light", many people in the fandom considers his power to be related to fire and heat. Occasionally one would see fanarts with the theme of "Ichiji and Sanji the fire duo".
They have a point. "Sparking" is written with the kanji for light sparks, but those sparks also still imply "fire" (the word includes the fire kanji, and refers to sparks that has the potential to cause fire). This reinforces the "counterparts" theory.
Speaking of fire, sun, and moon, there is a certain object that combines those:
Tumblr media
These are the great taiko drums used for gagaku or bugaku traditional dances. The drums are framed in fire shapes, and as such is often known as the "flame drums" kaendaiko 火烟太鼓.
The left drum is decorated with the sun, and the right drum with the moon. It's not always like this, but sometimes the Sun's tomoe curl right, like Sanji's brows, while the Moon's tomoe curl the opposite way, like his brothers.
I've talked about how the Germa skull's eyes resemble tomoe. I've talked about how I suspect Germa has connection to the moon. I also mentioned that there might be a theme of "sun and moon team ups".
The Kamen Rider connection, and the tomoe on the drums, I really hope are hints that would point to Sanji fully reconciling with his brothers properly.
Here be dragons: Sun and moon reversal?
Many people has theorised that Sanji's powers are Lunarian-based, and here's my take on it. Despite its name, though, Lunarians by design seems more closely tied to the sun.
To quickly reiterate, King's design looks similar to Garuda, from both Hindu and Japanese mythology:
Tumblr media
The Japanese thought that Garuda is associated with fire and the sun. Not to mention, the black wings (and maybe even the dark skin) brings to mind the legend of the "crow who resides in the sun", the Yatagarasu.
So a fire bird with sun imagery, but named after the moon? Sun/moon reversal. Like a Yin Yang twist.
In connection to the drums from the previous part. The sun drum has dragons, the moon drums has hou'ou ("Asian phoenix"). It's not just because of these drums specifically, it's also in part based on Yin Yang philosophy. Dragon is seen as Yang, and the sun is also Yang. In fact, the Chinese and Japanese word for the sun is "the great Yang" (taiyō 太陽). So they are paired together. The moon is Yin, and because the hou'ou is seen as feminine (Yin), they are paired together as the counterpart to the other pair.
While a hou'ou is nothing like the Western phoenix, we have seen from Marco that Oda-sensei can consider them as the same thing. Marco's fruit powers are based on the western phoenix, but one of his attacks is named after the hou'ou.
If Sanji, who has "sun imagery" (from the Kamen Rider connection), has connection to "fire bird" imagery, then will his brother(s), who has moon connections, get "dragon" imagery to them later?
Ichiji, sparks, and the dragon
Conspiracy upon conspiracy.
Some time ago I pointed out that in terms of the name, Ichiji's "sparks" seems to be connected to his brothers (not Reiju, just his brothers). Besides that, "sparks" 火花 seem to just be byproducts that is not necessarily wanted.
Sparks from electric charge: What you want is electricity. Sparks are either just there, or it's occurring because something's wrong.
Crackling fire sparks: Those are just there as well, and while it can look aesthetic, it's secondary to the fire itself.
Sparks from iron welding/smithing: It's just a byproduct of the metal bring grinded or hit. Not to mention, the sparks are actually hazardous.
This seems strange for a power name, although it could be that sensei was just finding a kanji that's the closest thing to the English word "spark". Maybe this was actually a thing from the older generations of Super Sentai.
Still. Let's imagine that the "spark" being something rather odd for a power is a hint that something is amiss.
That last one from the smithing is what I want to point out here. There is a certain god of blacksmithing in Japan, who shares a name/is syncretised with a dragon. It is Ame no Mahitotsu no Kami.
There is a certain shrine called Tado Taisha in Mie prefecture that used to enshrine a dragon god, known as Ichimoku Ren. However, over time, because of various reasons this dragon god and the blacksmith god became joined as one entity and worshipped in the same shrine.
Following the Phoenix/Dragon theory from above, maybe the one who will get dragon imagery specifically will be Ichiji. Not saying that he will transform into a dragon, that's overdoing it. Just "imagery" associated with it. Perhaps instead of using the Eastern dragon, who are typically associated with wind and rain, the imagery will be more like a Western dragon who are associated with fire.
Although it would be funny if his "true abilities" turn out to be related to wind, though.
Also, the blacksmith god and the dragon are partially syncretised because they both have one eye, so I do wonder if it's possible that under his glasses Ichiji is actually missing one eye? I doubt it since both his eyes were glowing when he did Sparking Valkyrie, but on the other hand, what if like Stealth Black the sparks were all from the suit? What if the glasses generates the light, and it has nothing to do with Ichiji's actual eyes? And that his actually built-in augmentations is not that? I'm just saying.
And a little more detail, in relation to the missing eye theory: Ichimoku Ren and Ame no Mahitotsu both lost their eye because their own activities injured themselves. Blindness from smithing sparks is a common occupational hazard for blacksmiths, and that's how Ame no Mahitotsu lost his eye. Ichinoku Ren lost an eye in a storm, either while trying to stop the storm to protect the people who worship him or while causing the storm in a fit of rage (karma?).
What if Ichiji's powers went haywire one day, and he injured himself then?

In the spirit of Jevil, I have a little game to play. Degrees of seperation, I think it’s called.
Tumblr media
It’s at least a semi-well known fun fact that some of Jevil’s voice lines are based on a line of japanese LINE stickers called “Loose Clown.”
Tumblr media
He is a funny clown after all, so it’s a fun obscure reference for Toby to make. Here’s the other one referenced by Jevil:
Tumblr media
So what’s the deal with this one, right? Why is the pose for “Metamorphosis” dabbing? Well, it can be assumed that “Metamorphosis” is a direct translation of the japanese “Henshin”, which in turn is what Jevil actually does say in the japanese translation. And why’s that important?
Well, Japan also happens to have a popular long running superhero series, starring bug-eyed heroes who transform with the phrase “Henshin”, the second of which has been rocking that pose all the way since the early seventies.
Tumblr media
Yep, there’s Kamen Rider 2 rocking the pose, and for a little extra here’s Kamen Rider Stronger and Kamen Rider Black rocking it as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And some kid, because I’m pretty sure this is an advertisement for the transforming belt toy. Hence, this is a “Henshin” pose.
So Jevil was referencing Loose Clown, but your fun fact of the day is that Loose Clown was referencing Kamen Rider in turn. How’s that for uhhh... Only one degree of seperation, actually. Tune into Kamen Rider Jevil, coming 202X! A mischief mischef, a justice justice!

Tokusatsu influences in Blue Period
Okay many people may not know but Magender in Blue Period is a reference to Tokusatsu, specifically Kamen Rider. I just want to spend my time going through some panels and just add a few fun facts as a fan of both shows.
Tumblr media
Here is a brief rundown of Kamen Rider
It’s a long running TV show starting from the 1970s where a superhero who rides a motorcycle fight supervillains in order to protect Earth and their loved ones. When the franchise began they usually had an insect motif but has expanded in the last few decades to experiment with new ideas. There are 33 series currently and are split up into 3 eras (Showa, Heisei and Reiwa) based on the different monarchs who ruled over Japan at the time. There are other details but all you need to know is that it is pretty big series in Japan and has been making waves internationally.
Tumblr media
First is the episode count. Usually kamen rider seasons shows last around 47-52 episodes on average however some can be as little as 31 episodes (kamen rider decade) and some can be as long as 98 episodes ( the original kamen rider series). The reasoning behind the episode count is that it runs all year round only a weekly basis. It starts from September and ends in August with a few breaks throughout the year.
Tumblr media
Another staple in the kamen rider and tokusatsu medium as a whole is the transformation belt or “Henshin belt”. This is used by the main character to transform into their superhero form and they often cry out “Henshin” (transform in Japanese) as well as their catchphrase. As seen below Magender’s catchphrase is: Eliminate evil and illuminate truth.
Tumblr media
Furthermore Henshin belts are one of the most successful pieces of merchandise in Kamen Rider due to it iconicness with each new rider having their own unique belt. Another piece of merchandise would be the helmet which Meguro wore in chapter 45. Both can be pretty expensive so I feel for Yatora ( i want one so bad as well)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Last bits I want to go over is what Takada said in chapter 51. The demographic in Tokusatsu has always gone towards young kids, mainly boys. However there have been interesting incidences where a kamen rider series is watched by a different demographic, adult women. This phenomenon was not only due to mothers having to understand the plot of kamen rider for their children but because they found the main lead handsome.
This caused the widely known ‘Odagiri effect’ (named after the lead actor in Kamen Rider Kuuga) which wikipedia states that “A program attracts a larger than expected number of female viewers because the program stars attractive male actors or characters”
This doesn’t mean all women watch kamen rider for the handsome characters of course but this caused a large shift in how actors were recruited which still happens in the present day
The last comment about the relationship between the two male characters is quite an often take when it comes to the two male leads of the series. The tension caused by the two and their subsequent interactions as they learn to bond over the 50 episodes causes many fans to speculate if their bonds go beyond ‘friendship’. I could name many incidents in almost all series that are homoerotic but it is rare to have anything confirmed. To add fuel to the fire it isn’t uncommon to see actors of a particular kamen rider series to go onto starring in BLs which has lead to several memes by kamen rider fans.
Okay so that’s all. I’m very happy if anyone read this far and I hope this gave a bit of an insight on the Tokusatsu medium through the lens of Magender as I love Kamen rider and Blue Period to bits. I’ve barely seen anyone talk about it online so I just wanted to dedicate a long post about it. Have a great day :D
