Fruits Basket is only cutesy at first, then it went into psychological territory with all the cycle of abuse theme going on, coupled with a manipulative character who does everything he could to trigger things his way. It does have a saccharine sweet ending but that doesn't take away the bitterness we had to read before getting to that ending. And Fruits Basket was as equally praised and loved in Japan. It has an anime reboot this year after 20 years. That says something about its popularity.

Yeah and I didn’t mean to imply that it was less popular or in general not popular at all, but rather, just deemed “less problematic” to a western audience compared to something like Nana.

Because honestly, a lot of shoujo, just like a lot of romance novels, if you take them out of the context of basically being a wishful fulfillment or idealistic fantasy is problematic, which is why a lot of characters don’t actually face any realistic consequences (not necessarily negative mind you) for their actions, relationships, etc. 

because if they did, a lot of shoujo manga would end before even reaching the main plot point. 

Like in Tsubaki-Chou Lonely Planet, before even getting to that point, CPS probably would be called before allowing a 16-year-old to live on the streets with their own resources let alone before she actually started working as a maid for a reclusive writer. 

In  Hirunaka no Ryusei you’d be arrested on the spot for that relationship. 

In Kamisama Kiss, who allows a 16-year-old to just be homeless and ditch them because of gambling debts and no one questions her living inside of this abandoned shrine?

A lot of shoujo is written by women so all of the problematic aspects tend to come from some type of self-fulfillment or desire to explore that kind of relationship.

my top 5 are : koisuru harinezumi, ookami shoujo to kuro ouji, orange, hirunaka no ryusei, tsubaki chou lonely planet, ao haru ride, strobe edge also! its a bit more than 5 but im sure youll love them all!
