I will say this one more thing about this: I do not believe the other try guys (or even many people at 2nd try) knew Ned was cheating before they found out sometime earlier this month. Not because I have some blind faith in the other guys to be good ppl (imagine saying ‘‘he would never’‘ when someone you might have said that about literally just did smth horrible), but because:

- knowing he is cheating and hiding it/keeping him on would be an absolutely ridiculously stupid thing to do and I think they’re smarter than that. Because with how well known they are, that’s a ticking time bomb until someone will snap an incriminating picture in public and if it then comes out you’ve known and protected him? That’s your image of wholesome, good guys absolutely destroyed.

- all the claims that they did know for months or years, that i’ve seen came from random twitter or reddit accounts or were even entirely anonymous. That’s not evidence. That’s some random person saying some random shit

- they were already cutting him out of videos before the video was leaked. Meaning they were already preparing to cut ties with him regardless of whether the fact he was cheating came out or not so ‘‘oh they just have to fire him now bc it got out’‘ doesn’t really make sense.

- if him cheating was somehow an ‘‘open secret that the entire company knew’‘ it wouldn’t stay secret long. Nothing ever does if a lot of people know about it . You ever try to plan a surprise party for someone without someone tattling? This is this except tattling would seem like the more moral option to many ppl and make it even more likely that someone tells so again hiding it in that case is just a stupid strategy even with NDAs (bc your employee could leave instead of signing said nda or they could just hide their tracks well while leaking smth)

Now I will believe that they quite possibly weren’t planning on telling the public why they got rid of Ned, both to protect Ariel and others from harrassment and to protect their own image - any dirt on Ned also harms them bc if one of the wholesome good guys isn’t actually all that, maybe the others aren’t either. If the video wasn’t leaked I imagine they’d have been vague or said it was for personal reasons or whatever, but they still would have seperated from Ned.

I also think like.... listen, you can know your friend has flaws and maybe sometimes flirts too much when he’s drunk or sometimes says inappropriate shit and you can forgive him that and still be friends with him and try to push him in a better direction, you can do all that and never suspect he might be cheating. Because there’s a big jump from one to the other and we always see the best in the people we love. It’s easy to say in retrospect that it was obvious but shit like this is never obvious. You don’t suspect your friends of being capable of that stuff unless it’s pushed right in your face

i think some people (especially on this web site) interpret succession the same way that people would interpret, like. glee. or bbc sherlock. or any media in the past decade-ish before queer characters and couples were more common in media. in the way that essentially boils down to “popular entertainment is so heteronormative, i need to hunt for clues that show the creators know gay people Exist beyond homophobic stereotypes” because that validates the queer person watching and any potential queer readings of the characters. and that period of time is still SO fresh, and queer representation in media is still not what it could or should be. 

but it’s just interesting and i think kind of unfruitful when people interpret the scenes of this show as clues or proof that greg is gay irl or something.

not only is that just patently Not The Point Of The Show, it’s also like. we don’t need to see a scene where greg comes out as gay. his dad who abandoned him was gay. logan calls every one of his family members a faggot if they do something he just slightly doesn’t like. tom asked greg the first day they met if greg would kiss him as a power play or plea for affection or a sign of his latent sexuality. etc etc etc. and all of these connect inextricably to the show’s actual themes and message. what exists in the show already is so much more meaningful and complex than any cumulative “proof” could be, and i think interpreting it as such undervalues the show’s thoughtful writing.

Odypen definitely and equivalently adore each other BUT I weirdly can't see them as the type to actually say "I Love you".

They still definitely vocalize their love for each other but it's more so in "My Joy", and "Extraordinary Woman", "Strange Woman/Man", etc. And very cheesy lines (both say some cheesy shit in the Odyssey, and he definitely does in the Iliad as well. "Joy like a drowning sailor seeing land" bit???)

I could see "I adore you" but even then, that's probably during very specific moments but the actual "I love you"??? I just typed it just now for fic shit and... It weirdly just didn't feel right and I don't know why. 😅

Speaking of Fairylace I don't think I've posted her over here yet ^.^ Fairylace, aka Princess Marianne Johanna Isobela Wefenne, is the Spiderwoman of Earth 162 and protector of the kingdom of Niwe Yorke <3 her identity was hidden and she was hidden away in a small village as an infant after the King and Queen of Niwe Yorke were told that, on her 18th birthday, their child would succumb to a terrible curse... unfortunately, Fairylace got cursed on the eve of her birthday, which is how she got her powers </3 the curse is slightly mitigated; the amulet she wears keeps her humanoid form... but if it is somehow removed, she transforms into a monster...!

The visual style of her universe is "mid budget children's fantasy movie made as a collaboration between an italian and japanese animation studio" (Think Unico or The Last Unicorn)

This time it's not inspired by anything specific -- it's just something that occurred to me while looking at last year's stuff that I decided I wanted to do. Basically, it's OT3 math -- Alice: Madness Returns times Corpse Bride times The Smiler equals my OT3, get it?

Oh, and, uh, if you're looking at the trio of Sims 4 screenshots below and going "hey, wait a minute, I don't remember this from any of Vic's past Chill Valicer Save updates" -- I may have gone looking through past screenshots, realized that the only set that had the trio in the outfits I wanted (the celebratory pictures in front of Van Liddelton Groceries) did not have them in the ORDER I wanted (that is, none of them were Alice-Victor-Smiler), and -- rather than tweaking the image slightly to accommodate the screenshots I already had -- fired up my game, updated Victor's primary "everyday" outfit to that CC suit that looks the most like his in-movie one, and set up a new tripod photoshoot in the second floor hallway to get the pictures I wanted. ...and then ended up using THREE shots because I couldn't decide. *facepalm* Yeah. Don't judge me. (Or do, but just don't tell me.)

here's the thing about matthias: he isn't the honorable, reformed hero some of the fandom seems to see him as.

yes, he was raised by a tight-knit family of comrade soldiers and decides to betray them in the end. of course that took incredible strength. i don't deny that. but we also need to recognize that the drüskelle are not just some rogue cult. they are a core part of the fjerdan government, who is trying to wipe out the grisha because they are seen as dangerous. that's literally just genocide. however indoctrinated someone is, this is something that is evil from every angle, even if the character can't or won't see it.

and look, i love a good redemption arc, but matthias is such a passive actor in his. he falls in love with nina against his will. she changes his attitudes toward grisha because she's beautiful and kind so all grisha can't be bad, right? this a classic example of the trope of separating the "good ones" from the rest, where you cherry-pick specific individuals to point to as exceptions to a group's nature, which is still implied to be evil. you have to do a lot more than fall in love to truly unearth and address the roots of bigotry.

tbh, this is my biggest critique of the books as a whole. i loathe the "love conquers all" trope that pairs together a character from the oppressed group and one from the oppressors, letting the one show the other through the power of love that being bigoted is not nice. it puts all the responsibility on the former to prove their humanity, and gives all the credit to the latter's ability to be persuaded to recognize it. and then it inevitably leads to forgiveness, because the character has "earned" it by changing their views, once again making the victim seem like the villain if they don't absolve the oppressor of their past "mistakes". also, it's incredibly unrealistic for someone to fall in love with a person who actively hates them and considers them sub-human. in real life, people have to work on their bigotry before that happens, not use the relationship as a plot device for character development.

i think the idea of writing a character like matthias is neat. i think portraying someone's struggle to throw off the suffocating, hateful dogma they've been fed all their life is a story we need more of. i think personal growth of this variety should be celebrated, because otherwise people would never change. but i don't think the people, fictional or real, get to do this without facing profound consequences. it is not enough to feel sorry. it is not enough to apologize. it is definitely not enough to fall in love. and i think writing that lets people off the hook like this grossly oversimplifies power and oppression, and ends up being a feel-good way to romanticize people who cause a lot of harm.

a last note: my opinion is 100% influenced by my being bipoc. matthias is a classic aryan supremacist, even if being aryan isn't the thing he's being supremacist about. my gut reaction to that type of character is always going to be mistrust, both because people in real life have given me reason to be mistrustful and because characters like these are often written in a way that makes you sympathize with oppressors. i don't think matthias earns that trust, and i don't see why i owe him my affection as a reader.

#i know i'm usually a 'haha silly little textpost' blog (and don't get me wrong i still am) but this has been on my mind for a while #to be clear i don't think you have to hate him as a character to be a morally upstanding person #and there's nothing inherently wrong about relating to him either #but i do think we as a fandom (a very white one at that) need to acknowledge this #especially because it carries over beyond fiction #stories are powerful and the messages we take from them stick with us even after we close the book #plus even by the end he still is very bigoted #and i realize that he would have had more time to work on himself if he hadn't... y'know #but that's why i like fanon matthias a lot better #he's usually further along in his unlearning process or he actually has to experience that process in a realistically painful way #in fact i really *like* matthias fanon where he actually grapples with his hatred and comes out a better person for it when it's done well #i.e. when he isn't simply forgiven by everyone (especially nina) because he says sowwy #i am thankful to leigh bardugo for creating this universe AND i think she fumbled the matthias redemption arc #nuance!! it exists!!! #ok rant over #also absolutely NO calahan hate on this post #in this house we do not equate characters with their actors #soc #soc spinoff #matthias helvar #helnik #nina zenik #sab #six of crows #save six of crows #save shadow and bone #shadow and bone #crooked kingdom #grishaverse
