So there's this post with a troubling number of notes going around insisting that "dead dove" is not a genre, it doesn't inherently have anything to do with darkfic, and that the tag could be applied to fics that are "100% fluffy where everyone's having a good time" if they happen to contain some abnormal (though entirely non-problematic) content like an unusual kink. The claim is that "dead dove: do not eat" is simply a "courtesy tag" that means "this is a very specific niche, mind the tags." And that's just... wrong.
I wrote up a whole rebuttal to this post since I can't stand misinformation and frankly OP was being kinda rude and judgey on top of their wrongness. But right after I posted my reply, OP turned off reblogs because, and I quote, “some fuckwad added some dumb shit onto this post and it is no longer educational” (the “fuckwad” being me and the “dumb shit” being proof that they were wrong). A couple people have asked me to make a rebloggable version of my response, which I've decided to do because this isn't the first time I've heard similar claims and I want to help set the record straight. However, I'm not linking the original post on the off chance this gains traction because OP did the right thing by turning off reblogs, preventing it from circulating further, and I don't want them to get hate for being unfortunately misinformed.
For those who don't know the history, "dead dove: do not eat" was originally proposed as a catchall "hydra trash party" alternative label for any fandom to warn that the content of a fic may be considered problematic or potentially upsetting and to read the tags carefully so you know what you're getting into and won't complain later. Specifically, DD:DNE was intended to convey that the Bad Things in the fic would likely be reveled in and not explicitly condemned by the narrative, which some people tend to get up in arms about, hence the need for the extra warning in addition to the tags. Don't believe me? Here's the original proposal (note DD:DNE can be found on a handful of fics dated before 2015 but this is when it really took off and became a Thing).
There are currently around 50,000 fics tagged as "dead dove: do not eat" on AO3 and close to 50% of those also include the rape/noncon warning (which of course is not the only type of "dead dove" but is one of the most popular and most consistently tagged). The normal percentage of noncon fics in any given fandom? Around 1-3%. That's a HUGE disparity. So don't tell me that dead dove is just a general "courtesy tag" and doesn't or shouldn't have dark connotations. Even the context of the original joke on Arrested Development has a dark undertone. Micheal Bluth casually finds an animal carcass in a bag in his refrigerator with the label "do not eat", as if eating it would be any sane person's first thought. The whole situation is kinda fucked up. And this fucked up vibe very much carries over into fandom usage too, as was intended.
The claim that dead dove has nothing to do with the content's genre and could just as easily be used to describe a 100% fluffy fic in which everyone's having a good time is straight up Wrong, or at the very least, severely warping the original meaning. Also, when someone these days says that they like/dislike "dead dove" most people in fandom automatically understand what that means because of the consistency of its usage over the years and the way language evolves. Whether you like it or not, "dead dove" IS a genre now and the term does carry a specific connotation. I do agree that DD:DNE should definitely still be used in conjunction with other tags, when applicable, to be explicit about the exact type of fucked up content you may find, but to say that the term is meaningless on its own is patently false and I'm tired of people who don't know what they're talking about pushing this narrative and causing even more confusion.
You want a generic term that also means "mind the tags" and doesn't have any inherently dark connotations? Just use good ol' "what it says on the tin" instead of trying to force dead dove to be something it's not.

Listen after the constant goalpost moving / claims of the past few years that
Callum would never Ever do dark magic again under any circumstances (can't relate) because
claims of him valuing duty/goodness/morality above all else because he'd never ever be like Claudia and Viren (ignoring the fact that he already was)
and that he obviously didn't do it mostly to save Rayla and did it for the dragon ("I had to, to save my friends" thank you 5x08)
until his TOX bio came out and literally spelled it out otherwise ("I value those close to me more than anyone or anything [...] I am beholden to my inner circle not some silly kingdom")
and then backpedaling to "oh well he'd only do something Big and Dangerous like that for Ezran" (but adamant that it wouldn't be for Rayla, for Some Reason??)
to just complete silence on 1) said goalpost moving and 2) the fact they've had to consistently backpedal if not outright be wrong characterization wise
like I think I'm allowed to do a couple of petty memes on behalf of the "we like that Callum is kinda fucked up and would do outright terrible things / things he considers terrible for his loved ones because his core is that he loves Ezran and Rayla above anything and everything else" crowd that's stayed consistent for a long time and is now validated as fuck

A Song of Ice & Fire AU idea: Jon is the only boy Stark of his generation. Ned & Cat have five daughters.
Robert "steamroller" Baratheon arrives in Winterfell to demand Ned be his new Hand and to engage his eldest son to Ned's eldest daughter. When Ned points out Robb is Ned's heir apparent and future Lady Paramount of the North, and therefore can't marry Joffrey and be Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Robert just goes "Well I'm sure that son of yours will be excellent as Lord Paramount, seeing as how you raised him Ned!" and promptly legitimizes Jon.
Catelyn is furious about this, right up until Robb quietly goes "Aw, but I wanted to marry Theon," at which point Catelyn is still furious but also 100% onboard with the Robb-Joffrey betrothal.
Bran still gets pushed out a window. But now Arya & Rickon are both there with him after Catelyn leaves.
Sansa still goes to King's Landing, but this time it's as her older sister's companion. Gray Wind and Lady probably survive the journey? But I'm not sure if they'd be allowed in the city let alone the Red Keep, they might have to go hang out in the King's Woods.
Jon is obviously not at the Wall now. The weeks between "King Robert & Ned & company leave Winterfell" and "Catelyn leaves because of the knife" are TENSE AS HELL.
I am honestly not sure how the war goes. Baelish is still up to all his machinations. Sansa has been treated differently because she's not the Presumed Future Princess so she wouldn't go to Cersei when Ned orders her to pack, and I can't imagine Robb doing so, but Ned tipped his hand to Cersei all on his own so that probably doesn't make a difference. The presence or absence of direwolves might.
Jon obviously wants to avenge his dad and rescue his sisters, and Catelyn wants that too, but she is nooot down with him being King in the North and he doesn't trust her to give good counsel (though he still yearns for her approval) so that whole plot is ripe for disaster.

Just finished my first playthrough of BG3. Romanced Lae'zel, but ending up turning into an Illithid because the idea of making Orpheus or Karlach do it didn't sit well with me (or my character).
I told Lae'zel to leave with Orpheus in the end (I heard she wouldn't stay with a ghaik anyway, which she's valid for, but also, it doesn't feel right to ask her to stay when I know how much her people mean to her). And like-
Her face before she flies off---
She looks so heartbroken and sad.

if there was a torchwood/spn crossover, jack would get shot in the head so much. i know he already dies a lot, but he’s going to die so many times during this crossover. keeps getting bullets unloaded into him. they stab him with silver and steel and copper and none of it keeps him down. he’s gonna get squirted with borax and that one’s not gonna kill him but it is going to ruin his coat, which is materially worse for him.

Let go of the version of yourself you are comparing yourself to
I think most people have at least one sliding doors moment: a poor financial decision, an encounter with the police, a career choice that didn't work out, an academic fuck-up, a relationship you should have left sooner. I certainly do. And you think: if only I'd made a different choice, that one time, my life would be so much better.
It's easy to blame yourself for doing the wrong thing or making the wrong choice, and I think most of us who feel that kind of guilt do eventually find a way of forgiving ourselves. We had good reasons for the choice we made at the time, even if they look foolish in hindsight. We can reason that things might have turned out the same, or worse, if we'd done what we now wish we had.
Even having forgiven myself and my youthful mistakes, though, I've only recently realised this: I have been living in the shadow of an imaginary version of myself for more than half my life. The version of me who didn't fuck up an important exam, who got the grades for her first-choice university, who therefore was able to get a better job and build on it, and is now working for the EU as some kind of fancy human rights lawyer. She's so much better than the real me, an underemployed freelance translator who has bumbled from admin job to admin job and is looking to change careers yet again.
But here's the thing: that perfect version of me is imaginary. I never think about lawyer me sitting in interminable meetings and not getting anything done! I never think of diplomat me losing her job because of Brexit! I never think about how that version of me doesn't have time for hobbies or deep friendships because her job takes up all her time and energy. She's fake! She's scamming me out of appreciating what I do have, and what I do love about my current life, and who I am.
Comparison is the thief of joy, and I have created an imaginary version of myself that I have been torturing my real self with for the past two decades.
So: if you have a sliding doors moment, and you think you've processed it, maybe take a moment to reflect on whether you are still comparing yourself to an impossible version of you or your life. Don't just forgive yourself. Put down that burden. That version of you would never have existed, even if you had done everything "right". Let yourself thrive as the person you are now.

I was reading your latest replies and I couldn’t help but wonder… thoughts on Saltburn? 💭 🛀
It was fun but tbh I think it was not perverse enough!!
Like I saw so many shocked reactions to it and went in expecting something that would give even *me* uncomfortable feelings. But watching it I felt like the production team was being conservative, like they were worried about being so shocking that it would be offensive and like- good art should lean into being potentially offensive. If you’re going to make your audience squirm don’t make them squirm just a little, make them viscerally recoil. If you’re going to do something that rides the line between horny and horrific, really lean hard into the horrific.
So I felt like some of the scenes that were shot in very low light to keep them ‘safe’ enough to keep the audience present (the ‘vampire’ scene) or where the details were obscured a little and make the audience put together what was going on (with the bathtub)- as a viewer I felt like in keeping things ‘safe’ they missed their true potential. I wanted to be horrified by them but honestly I’ve read much wilder stuff in published novels lol By playing it safe the movie avoided the most harsh criticism and outrage but also ensured it will never get taken seriously either.
And the end was kind of weak to me? Idk there felt like little purpose behind the things Oliver did even after he explained himself.
But overall!! Fun!! Like putting The Talented Mister Riley and early episodes of Skins into a blender and having some weirdo horny freak stuff come out. Absolutely worth the $10 in tickets, 10/10 movie to go to with a fellow fandom pervert.

Hi I’m slightly bored and… feeling a bit lonesome so I’m just gonna give a grand speech about one of the best things ever:
This is from the RockPalast interview and the part where they all shush Hugh in order to let Richard speak is just so funny to me because Hugh just stares into the camera and gives the most goofy smile I have ever seen. I love this scene so much. He is just one of the silliest folks I have ever met and that is why I am a huge (pun not intended) fan of him.
Although I have to admit his face here zoomed in up close looks… just a tad bit scary…
Uh… tee-hee…

You know the drill.
Zenonia!
I have a problem.
Aha. Ha. Yeah. Another Regret and Chael drawing. I love em. Sue me, I guess.
I love dad Regret with all my heart and I just love their dynamic, okay? Literally most of the flashbacks were about Chael asking for his advice. And aside from them having the best father-son relationship ever, the protag actually has a dad, a good dad. An adoptive dad but a dad nonetheless. How could I not love that? Best dad in RPG'S since 2011.
They are literally the main reason why I'm still in the Zenonia fandom and why I'm still waiting for the global release of Chronobreak even with it just being a standard MMORPG than Zenonia. I. Just. Want. Them. To. Be. Happy.
It has its flaws, sure, and plenty of plot holes like in Zenonia 1 why is Sun still alive in the Evil Route when its impossible for her to survive that attack or why the fuck did Dupre not tell Sun about Regret and vice versa or in Zenonia 3 did Regret know about Frey being Celine or did he just forget that Chael was an angel and just told him he was human but dammit the only flaw that matters is that they can't be happy together :(
And if Gamevil won't give it to me then I'll make it myself.
I want more Zenonia content :(
Oh. And don't let the cute sleeping baby face fool you. He cries all the damn time. Hence Regret's eyebags.
Regret loves him regardless :)
Here's the other versions!
I was trying to make a manga aesthetic. I hope I did it right.
