one thing i have feelings about but not fully articulated thoughts about is the analysis i’ve seen going around that Otis Sr. died because of a coin and that symbolizes how he was too focused on money in life (or something to that effect) and i just
i feel like that flattens him as a character, and i know we dont have much from him since he dies so soon in the movie, but we also do have more from him because he built the ranch! he built the business! i think it’s right before he dies but it might have been in a flashback, he talks about a new movie they’ve booked, and how if it goes well they’ll want them back for the sequels, and i remember because he said “we wont have to sell any more horses”
and i think that moment is there to tell us—the financial precariousness isnt new after his death. He built the ranch, he built the business, and the legacy, but it’s not in such a solid place for him to slow down or retire or anything (im working off his actor’s age, 66, since there wasnt anything abt the character’s age online, to say he’s at or close to “retirement age”). he’s still working, still trying to provide for his family.
And like, he’s a Black man trying to leave a legacy, financial and otherwise, for his children in a country that has always made it hard for Black people to accrue generational wealth. And we see that the white commercial crew didn’t trust OJ despite knowing his father, didn’t give him a chance to get Lucky back under control (or listen to a single thing OJ said or act like they’ve ever met a horse before but. i digress). We can infer (i think) that OJ has had trouble getting other jobs. Now he’s lost this one. Otis Sr. left his children a ranch, a business, a name, and white people can’t legally just take the ranch/business anymore, so instead they try to take the name, by refusing OJ any of the respect they showed his father (and when i say respect i’m mostly assuming that they listened to him with horse wrangling more than they did to OJ—we didnt see how they interacted with him, so all i have is the comments on set like “where’s the older one” and “your father left a hole”). And that chips away at Otis Sr.’s legacy—em is incredulous when OJ tells her he’s sold ten (i think) of the horses (“dad’s horses?”). He’s going to get them back, except we know he can’t. They’re gone.
and i just think that all gets missed when his death is reduced to “money killed him because he was too focused on money”. especially when the reason given for him being too focused on money is the jean jacket story because i honestly think that story is heartbreaking on both sides! he trains jean jacket for that movie because he wants to build something for his kids and in doing so makes one of his kids feel unseen! that hurts!
anyway this was long winded and clumsily worded, i just wanted to say something because i feel like for all that he has like, five minutes of screen time, Otis Sr. is a good, layered character, and while i think him being killed by a coin is absolutely deliberate and symbolic, it’s not as simple as “oh he’s a capitalist”

Alright, if Loki's off limits, what about Gunmar vs. Mirage?
*Puts on Death Battle hat*
Now this is one that we can look at with some science. (Or at least a lot of googling)
Gunmar the Black, Trollkind's greatest threat and tyrant.
vs
Mirage the Soulcaller. Travelling bard and former adventurer.
After discussing the feats of Gunmar with @katanamasako and @xdeusxmachinax, (Since Mirage is my character. I know what she do.) the math was done, the numbers were crunched and simulations were made. It's time for a
DEATHBATTLE!!!
Tumblr media
Centuries ago, when humans and trolls started fighting each other for control over the Earth, it created the War for the Surface Lands, and there were many deaths. This led the first Heartstone to rot from within, and Gunmar was born from the corruption and darkness. Joining under the warchief, Orlagk, Gunmar began his bloody conquest.
He killed man and troll alike with his inhuman strength and seeming indestructibility from kings of other troll tribes to human settlements. It was only when he betrayed his Gummgumm leader that he finally took damage. Losing an eye to Orlagk, and gaining the sword Decimaar.
Later, Decimaar would get an improvement from Morgana, and the ability to warp the minds of those with weaker wills than Gunmar to be his eternal slave unless entering an area that cancels magic.
Even after being sealed in the Darklands for centuries, Gunmar retained his ambition and hunger for power. Only he was thwarted by the Trollhunter. Merlin's chosen warrior with the power of the eclipse blade. Said to the only weapon able to deal Gunmar a mortal wound.
Gunmar's strength and indestructible nature are by far his strongest boons. He can easily toss cars and boulders around, leap through floors of a museum and through the ceiling, and as Fish pointed out, if he can get a hold of an opponent, they can be eaten in mere seconds. He's also much faster than the average human, being able to go speeds of 30 mph at least.
His weaknesses on the other hand are harder to parse. He retains the standard troll weakness of sunlight turning him to stone. Music based magic also seems to work on him via Douxie in the Wizards series. The claim that "only Eclipse can deal him a mortal wound" is especially odd given that Orlagk with Decimaar has caused him injury and even Excalibur. So it's potentially that only potent magically enhanced weaponry can hurt him, and the eclipse thing is more of a prophesy than a definitive.
===============
In a world of Gods and Titans, Mirage was born to struggling musician and cursed human father, and a tiefling mother with decent magic potential, Mirage grew up poor, but never unloved by her parents. They taught her how to play the violin, do simple magic spells, and survive in a world that looked unfavorably to those with her and her mother's infernal ancestry. Her parents also did their best to keep the family curse from affecting her life too much.
Should a member of the family approach a spirit of the dead, the spirit would latch onto them, and transfer all the feelings of sorrow and sadness onto the family member, that they experienced in their lifetime. Such a vast amount of negative emotion lead many of the family to suicide, and unfortunately for Mirage, her parents were no exception.
Now forced on her own at 15, Mirage eventually left her hometown to find a cure for the curse a few years later. Travelling with a Cleric of Hades looking for misguided souls, a royal guard turned mercenary, and a druid who set the world ablaze with her charm.
Mirage initially focused on support, but soon learned her skill in illusions and fire based magic. Using her father's violin, she played songs that confused foes, healed her allies, burned enemies in hellfire, create an illusory dragon that cannot be killed, but does damage like a real dragon. She even has spells to grow plants for harvest, turn invisible, teleport, and even change a creature or object into something else completely and permanently.
The burning grew even stronger when after set to do a favor for the sun God Helios, Mirage's fire magic was able to ignore a creatures natural resistance to fire. She could burn through magic armor, fire dragons, and even other flames itself.
Her adventuring days came to an end during a climactic battle with a cult of Typhon, the scourge of the Olympic gods. The cult brought Typhon back as a demigod and due to loopholes in the laws of the divine, the Gods couldn't fight him to stop his continued rampage. Not directly anyway. Mirage's group was gifted boons, and Mirage's was the Aegis Armor. Armor worn by a younger Athena, and able to defend against mental effects and blows that would kill the average human. Typhon was defeated, but Mirage was left alone as the sole survivor of her party. She retired from adventuring after that battle, but still travelled, and spread her songs across the land.
Mirage's strengths are... Many. She's a versatile spellcaster, her fire spells bypass immunity, Athena's armor make it very difficult to actually hit her, she can heal, evade, teleport and more.
Her weaknesses are that she's still mortal. If her opponent can overpower her defenses, she doesn't have much to stand up to attacks. She was never the muscle of any group she was in. Also important to note, that many of her good illusion spells take time to cast, only one can be active at a time, and while teleportation is nice, she's no faster than a normal human, and by the rules of death battle, no escape allowed.
Speaking of, the results of the fight. I don't have the time or budget to do an animation, so let's just say the result and how that was decided.
===============
Mirage wins.
Don't get me wrong, Gunmar is a potent fighter and physically powerful, but from the talks with Fish, his most powerful feat was throwing a car. As fast as it was going, the joules needed for that feat was ~450,000. There might be more, but let's look at Mirage's feat of tackling Typhon.
Typhon was once at least on par with Zeus, who can throw literal thunderstorms at people he doesn't like. The average strength of a thunderstorm according to google is 10^15 joules of energy, so this is the benchmark.
Typhon was turned into a demigod sort of being to free him from the bindings he was under after his initial rampage. Let's say an eighth of the benchmark, and divided again for the 4 members of her party. (The ones that actually fought Typhon that is.) Which gives us a total of 31,250,000,000,000 Joules of energy. That's roughly 31,250,000 sticks of dynamite.
Yeah... That's a bit more powerful. She would need to beat that to do damage to him, and despite not being the main attacker, she was still able to damage Typhon.
Gunmar's combat experience is also something to note. He's fought wizards before and would know how to face them, but Mirage's versatility and skill is something Gunmar has shown no perfect counter for. Even if he reaches Mirage, she has several skills that would allow her to avoid harm or even misdirect him. Hell, she could turn him into a mouse and teleport him into the deepest part of the ocean. He's a literal rock monster and would sink. Either drowning if he can, or just unable to move by the crushing weight of the ocean.
For that matter, she could just teleport them both to a location in sunlight. She knows a thing or two from her travels, and a troll's aversion to sunlight is well documented in most realities where trolls exist.
And finally, the Eclipse blade. As stated before, magic weapons like Excalibur can pierce his indestructible defenses. Hell, he's been winded by being tackled or having a large rock thrown at him. I'm 90% sure it's less of conditional immortality, and more a prophesy of what is needed to finally end him. And thanks to Helios, Mirage is a magic weapon effectively with her fire magic. Bypassing immunity, both natural and magical. Should it not be conditional immortality, Gunmar would be literal toast.
TL;DR, Against this Mirage, Gunmar's feats were just an illusion of grandeur.

i am here today to talk about HORRIBLE OVERSIGHT in the pete fandom we NEED to correct our ways and see the light
but it is ok i will Explain
ok do u see this
Tumblr media
this is a pha khao ma (spelling up for debate). it's a waistcloth commonly worn in south and southeast asia — you may have heard of it as a lungi / longyi. it's a rectangular, light, soft piece of cloth that (mostly) men tie around their (mostly) waists to wear in hot humid climates because it's very comfy and breezy and dries fast.
some fun facts:
it's very common to wear right out of the bath / shower because the dampness stays on your skin for a while after so this helps air it out
underwear is ✨ optional ✨ (although really mostly only at home. the fear of being pantsed in public is universal, after all)
it's often worn at home, but people wear it out as well and it is especially common in rural communities. if you've got a bunch of old uncles sitting outside on a veranda in a small town, they're all maybe sitting around in pha khao mas
(let me follow this up with: while it is common in rural regions, people in rural areas all over thailand do also just wear shirts and shorts and pants 😂 it is merely an option, not a rule)
what you see is the casual version. there are much more formal versions, and fashionable versions, and they are apparently having a resurgence with the thailand youth rn
the plaid-like patterning is a specific design that has centuries of history in thailand! different regions produce styles of designs with vibrantly different colors and dyes, and they're very proud of it
there's many ways to tie it: in these pictures, pete has it tied so that it hangs down well past his knees, but you can hoist them up to mostly be around your upper legs (leaving the knees showing). this gives you a TON more mobility to, say, run around or climb trees or beat up people
here is a reference of real people wearing pha khao mas. as you can see they are chilling
Tumblr media
and the most important fun fact of all:
post-canon pete wears it ALL. THE. TIME.
we know pete wears these in the privacy of his home! they're his comfy post-shower post-workout jammies! every time we see him with one he has a different one! HE HAS LIKE SIX MORE OF THESE TUCKED AWAY.
he probably wore them a lot around his yaai. and now, at home, vegas sees him in them CONSTANTLY.
you may be looking at me, and then looking at these photos, and then looking again at me, and going, lu, noooooooo, this ruins the post-canon pete being unbearably cute and stylish and hot agenda!!! to which i say
no
it ENHANCES IT. it's about the DICHOTOMY
vegas watches as pete walks out of the bathroom wearing one of these and nothing else, and they're riding real low on his hips, and vegas chokes out a "what the hell are you wearing" and pete leans against the doorframe and wiggles his eyebrows and puts on his thickest northern accent and says "you wanna fuck me so bad city boy" and he's RIGHT OKAY VEGAS HATES THEM AND VEGAS DOES WANT TO FUCK HIM SO BAD ANYWAYS
macau gives pete sooo much shit for it but then he watches pete kick ass in one during training one day and pete looks like some rural film movie star in his tank top and pha khao ma and his fists of fury and macau goes, huh, actually, phi looks fucking cool, can i have one
when they visit yaai pete basically forgoes pants and just wears these all the time and blends in with all the old grandpas who pat pete on the back and ask him for his opinions on politics and vegas is so fucking confused and totally in love do you UNDERSTAND
anyway. all of this to say, if you were to write fics where pete wears a pha khao ma and/or draw him in one it would be HIGHLY CANONICALLY ACCURATE. and i would love you. thank u for coming to my ted talk.
(and thanks to @minorfamilysupremacy for being the first victim of said ted talk)

I've always thought that one of the biggest problems 4halo has is that they think they know each other very well but they actually dont. They only know the carefully currated version they show the world.
Not only Forever but everyone on the island has seen Bad as the nice, caring, wholesome person who is always there to help if needed and occasionally steals furnature. Forever doesnt know he's a demon. He doesnt know his dark sides, the lenght he is willing to go to for the people he loves no matter who gets hurt in the process, how much he is hurting himself for it. He only saw a glimps of that after the eggs disappeared and then in purgatory. Thats why he was so shocked and worried and tried to fix him when he saw Bad acting out. Because that was not his Badboyhalo. Not the person he believed he knew so well. He didnt know that there was nothing to fix just his true self finally showing through.
But it also means that he doesnt understand the way Bad shows affection and how much he cares about Forever. All his political discussions only happened because he cares so much about him. And panks are literally the way you can tell how important you are to Bad. The whole gifts vs presents conversation Bad had with Tina if anyone remembers made that so so clear. And thats also why he expects Forever to ask him out for dinner after the pool thing! Thats (for once) not him being sarcastic but he genuinely doesnt understand that humans dont view pranks as basically a love confession!
And thats where Bad not understanding Forever starts. He doesnt get why Forever gets angry when he gets pranked or when they are having a shouting discussion. Forever has never shown how much he struggles with self worth and feeling like he doesnt matter, cant do anything right and feels basically useless. Bad doesnt know how much he struggles with all the pressure from being the president and wanting to make things better for everyone but it never seems to fix anything. Bad doesnt understand how feeling like he's in control means so much to Forever and how him losing control made him almost apprechiate the happy pills.
And all of that cause THEY DONT FUCKING COMMUNICATE!
They are a complicated mess and I love them <3

Charles’ patches and pins :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SKA pin: Quick History lesson because I had no idea what it was: definitely google more:
SKA is a music genre that originated in Jamaica. In the 70s a lot of Jamaicans immigrated to the UK. Punks and young Jamaican immigrants felt a sense of unity due to both being screwed over by the system. This led to 2 Tone SKA which mixed SKA with punk rock elements. While 2 Tone SKA is a genre, it was also a movement that focused on racial unity.
Rude Boy patch: In late 60s Jamaica RudeBoys were young “delinquents” who listened to rocksteady music. Term was used in England to refer to fans of SKA and 2 tone. Think the other insults used for punks that have been reclaimed.
Checker Print pin: Represents racial unity in the movement.
Target patch: Symbol for the Mod subculture. Google this one to.
Union Jack pin (on bag) and patch: He sure is British
Smiley face pin: I believe it’s just a generic smiley face but it could be a logo.
Unknown metal(?) pin: I can’t get a clear enough look at it to even begin to guess what it is.
Unknown pin: I have no idea. The one between the metal one and the checker print. No a clue.
Unknown flag(?) pin: A flag with horizontal blue, yellow, and red stripes but I can’t find anything with those colors in that order.

Updated version of the guide I made a year ago to show how to get the various endings in the mainline touhou games.
My personal recommendations are still the same as before: Imperishable Night is still the best game in the series for beginners, since not only is it one of the easiest, many of the characters that appear there appear semi-often in the series. Avoid playing Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, Undefined Fantastic Object, or Subterranean Animism as your first game, as these are considered the hardest games in the series. Games prior to Mountain of Faith allow you to set the number of starting lives, at the cost of a penalty to your total score. Though I should mention that Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (a common recommendation as a starting point by many) is a terrible place to start due to it being a very janky game.
The PC-98 games (Touhou 1-5) are for the PC-98 series of computers, and as such require an emulator to be played on modern computers. The early windows games (Touhou 6-9, though mostly Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil) may have some trouble running properly on modern computers.
Normally I would recommend playing the latest game in the series as a good start, however, Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost, while being a rather forgiving game (potentially even being the most forgiving game in the series), is also one of the split-screen versus games, and as such, plays different from other games in the series.
Most spinoff titles (such as the fighting games) lack penalties for using continues, or otherwise lack endings and/or are built around infinite retries on stages (the photo games, etc.). Similarly, PoDD & PoFV will still give the good endings even after using continues.
I still think the best manga/print work to start with is Forbidden Scrollery, however, all of the print works (aside from the hifuu cds and Dolls in Pseudo Paradise) require at least some knowledge of the setting and characters.
All Touhou Games, aside from the five PC-98 games, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Perfect Cherry Blossom, Imperishable Night, and most of the fighting game spinoffs apart from Antimony of Common Flowers, can be purchased on Steam.

Some more BPD rep in the fandom cuz I just see people be like "Toby has BPD so hes abusive!"
(In my AU) Both Clockwork and Nina have BPD. Toby has borderline symptom overlap (as cluster B disorders usually do), but he only classifies for ASPD by criteria. Nina was diagnosed when she was 15 due to the severity of her condition, and Clockwork was in the process of being "treated" for it while she was admitted to the psychiatric unit as a teenager before she snapped.
Nina has a rich history of developing FPs quickly, and those relationships turning toxic just as quick. She's so afraid of being abandoned and not being loveable that she's willing to put herself and anything else in jeopardy as a desperate attempt to make her FP stay. This often leads to her being used and then promptly dumped no matter her efforts, which only contributes to her fears.
She suffers a lot with rejection sensitivity, intense emotions, rage episodes, and she's very impulsive. Nina gets attached very quickly, and is a very loyal friend, but her instability is hard to handle (partially because she has a poor taste in people).
Clockwork suffers from BPD as well, but her presentation differs. She fears being abandoned and betrayed just as Nina does, but her response to this fear is to shut everyone out, and never give anyone the chance to leave her. She's always alone, always on the run. Clockwork is so afraid of being hurt again that she just completely refuses to get close with anyone.
She has the mindset that her showing emotion is weakness, and showing weakness is like stripping her naked. It's vulnerable, and vulnerable gets her hurt. Clockwork deals with splitting a lot, usually viewing things as all bad or all good, switching between idealizing and devaluing people in her life. She also experiences a lot of reactive rage, and is also very reckless and impulsive.
Nina and Clockwork and opposite sides of the same spectrum. They may present their issues differently, but theres a quiet sort of understanding of the intense pain they both carry. They have been through hell and back, and it shows on their collarbones.

im still extremely new to hermitcraft and the life series but im astonished by people saying they dont understand why skizz is joining when he isnt a huge builder, yet dont realize... every hermit had to say yes hes a good fit to let him in, and from what ive seen of hermitcraft they do a LOT of shenangians and its focused on building a base, sure crazy cool bases are the focus but i think skizzleman will bring a ton to the show based on how amazing he is in the life series, and he and impulse are real life really good (best? not sure) friends and i think hes good to have around
and plus joel is a great builder, and i think evens it out a bit, and again- he was unanimously voted in as a good fit by 20ish people like what else do you need

on one hand I think "yes add more nods to the 1939 film that's so fun I love the 1939 movie and it's the most recognizable one to the general public" but on the other hand I think "maybe don't add too many references to the 1939 film because if you give any critical thought to it, the plot of the two works together just barely line up and sense begins to unravel if you give it the smallest bit of thought: the entire movie takes place in the span of four songs in act 2"
for example:
No One Mourns the Wicked
Dear Old Shiz
The Wizard and I
What is This Feeling
Something Bad
Dancing Through Life
Popular
I'm Not That Girl
One Short Day
A Sentimental Man
Defying Gravity
Thank Goodness

End of Finale
End of show

Idk what I'm trying to say with all this- don't get it wrong I LOVE both properties dearly. It's just funny when one is framed as a prequel when that only applies to act 1 since the entire thing takes place in the background of act 2. All three (book/movie/musical) entities are very unique in their own special ways! It's fun to look at it closely and realize some little silly bits about it though :3
