I know Drug Store Truck Drivin’ Man is mostly a satirical song, and an hilarious one at that, but I keep thinking that the line “He’s been like a father to me, he’s the only DJ you can hear after 3” has something so genuinely soulful and existential and sad about it as well. It’s generational trauma condensed. It’s someone who’s desperately trying to bridge two generations together, to heal the rift by showing that there’s an alternative to hate and violence, that their “different” musical worlds maybe are not so different after all, being met with nothing but indifference and hostility because of who he is and the way he looks. It’s someone who’s simply yearning for the acceptance of a father he has never known. Not to bring up the James Dean comparison all the time, but that is a ‘Rebel Without A Cause’ moment if I ever saw one
