It’s Fine Press Black Friday!
Last Wednesday we presented a few understated wood engravings by the noted upper-Midwestern engraver and fine-press printer Gaylord Schanilec from a portfolio of literary broadsides documenting the 1998 Hungry Midnight reading series at The Hungry Mind bookstore in St. Paul, Minnesota. For this #Fine Press Friday after Thanksgiving, we present the broadside portfolio documenting the previous year’s Hungry Midnight series featuring the work of Sherman Alexie, John Dufresne, Paul Metcalf, Margaret Atwood, Charles Baxter, and Jonathan Lethem.
Entitled Context is Everything, after a prose piece by Lethem, the portfolio was printed by Schanilec, with his original wood engravings, in an edition of 20 copies (with variously editioned broadsides) at his Stockholm, Wisconsin farmstead studio Midnight Paper Sales in 1997, with each broadside signed by its respective author.

The Parson's Farewell Black Sails Musical Parallels | I. IV. VII. XXXVIII.
music variation note: this almost always plays as background music that exists within the scene itself. The exception to this being in VII, where it begins as tavern background music while Gates and Dufresne talk, and builds to become much grander, introducing the hurdy gurdy and more electric-sounding instrumentation as we cut back to Gates and Flint preparing for castoff.
I spent a year rewatching Black Sails and tracking all the bits of music that repeated at any point during the show, and my findings are reinforcing that Bear McCreary is a genius and this show should have been called 'parallels that will kill you over and over again'* (tag | chronological)

the most relatable as well as simultaneously the hottest thing silver has ever done is smash dufresne's obnoxious fucking face in with the equivalent of a steel-toed boot because the goddamn bastard yet again did not keep his mouth shut like I've had this exact urge for three fucking seasons everyone say thank you john silver you're a motherfucking STAR

This is the first year I’ve made digital art, but it was very fun and I want to keep getting better at it! This is some of the stuff I enjoyed making :)

[Image ID: 6 Black Sails screencaps with text. The left side shows Flint talking to Dufresne on the deck of the warship. The text reads, "You have to sink her. You cannot just escape, you have to sink that ship. For if a single one of those men lives to tell the tale, no one will ever surrender before that flag again." The right side shows Flint and Silver in the Maroon cell. The text reads, "But I know what the woman who leads this place is facing right now. The weight of her people's welfare on her shoulders. She will not let us leave this place alive. She simply won't permit it. end ID]

steinberg saying that deaths create more story than they close- the death of james flint not closing the story of long john silver but extending and solidifying it. silver thinks he can escape by "killing" james flint but instead he creates even more lore for his own story and traps himself even further in this co-created caricature of himself.

mkay. one of the best rules out there is to ask for help when you need it. so, hey, black sails fandom, would you mind helping me throw some ✨steampunk visual✨ together? I can draw and I would be so down to do some steampunk styled portraits of oh so many characters, it would be so so fitting too, but the only specific idea I have so far is for Dufresne and maybe Anne. tips/ideas/advice anyone? I promise to tag you when I'm done🤍

i'm not an amputee so absolutely tell me to stay in my lane if applicable, but it seems to me that there's something really unique about the way that black sails handles silver's disability and the narrative role of his prosthetic. as in, it's one of the only shows i've seen (although i'm sure there are more out there) where 1) a character's mobility is more impaired when using a prosthetic, and 2) where using a prosthetic is explicitly portrayed as an effort to appear more able-bodied to others in a way that's harmful to the amputee character: silver insists on wearing the leg in front of the men to the point of giving himself an infection and limiting his mobility in a fight because he's worried about maintaining his authority. while he doesn't choose to stop wearing it, i think it's telling that he also doesn't try to have a replacement made after he loses it or otherwise seem bothered by being seen using his crutch after he establishes the myth of long john silver by crushing dufresne's skull with his metal leg for mocking him as "half a man," symbolically tying the myth to his disability
