John 19, Reed's Version

So Pilate ordered that Jesus be punished with a beating. The soldiers made up a mock crown of thorn branches to put on his head and they put a purple robe on him. They would step up to him and jeer, “Long live the king of Israel!” and then slap him across the face. Meanwhile, Pilate went back out to the crowd and told them, “Listen up, I’m going to release Jesus to you, since I don’t see any grounds for further punishment.” So he sent Jesus out, still wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and Pilate said, “Look at this miserable fellow.” When the chief priests and their guards saw him, they all shouted, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” But Pilate told them, “You crucify him! I don’t see any reason to have him killed.” Then the Jewish leaders replied, “Our own law demands that this man be executed, because he’s claimed to be the Son of God.”

When Pilate heard this, he became even more anxious, and he went back inside. “Where are you really from?” he asked. But Jesus gave no reply. So Pilate said, “You won’t even talk to me? Surely you realize that I’m the one with the authority to either free you or crucify you.” But Jesus replied, “No one has any authority over me except what God has granted. So, Caiaphas has multiplied his guilt by compelling you to misuse your authority.” From this point on, Pilate tried various means of releasing Jesus. But the Jewish leaders hollered at him, “If you free this man, you’re no friend of Caesar’s! Anyone who would try to make himself a king is committing treason against Caesar.”

At this, Pilate decided to bring Jesus outside again. Then he sat down at his judge’s bench at The Pavement, a place which the locals call Gabbatha. (By this time it was around noon on Friday of Passover week.) Then Pilate said to the crowd, “Look, here is your king!” But they shouted back, “Get him out of here! Crucify him!” Pilate replied, “You want me to crucify your king?” But the chief priests hollered back, “Our allegiance is to nobody but Cæsar!” At their insistence Pilate finally gave in, and sent Jesus away to be crucified.

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus and made him carry his own cross to the place outside the city called The Skull (which in Aramaic is Golgotha). And there they crucified him, along with two criminals on either side of him, with Jesus in the middle. And Pilate had a notice made to be affixed to the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the king of Israel.”

The place of crucifixion was near the city walls, so many Judeans passing by saw the notice, which was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. So the chief priests complained to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘This is the king of Israel’! Write, ‘This man claimed to be king of Israel.’” But Pilate responded, “What I’ve written, I’ve written.”

The soldiers who crucified Jesus, meanwhile, had stripped him and were ripping apart his clothes and dividing up the scraps between the four of them. But his undershirt was seamless, woven from top to bottom as one piece. So they decided, “It would be a shame to tear this apart; let’s draw straws to see who gets it.” In saying this, the prophecy of scripture came true, [which says]: “They divided up my clothes among themselves, and they rolled dice for my shirt.”

While the soldiers were busying themselves at this, Jesus’s mother and the student Jesus loved came up to the cross, along with three other women: her sister and Mary (Clopas’s wife) and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the student standing there, he said to her, “Look, mother; this is now your son.” Then he said to the student, “Look, this is now your mother.” So from then on, he cared for her in his own home.

A while later, when Jesus saw that everything he came to do was finished, he said, “I’m thirsty,” (which sums up the prophecy of the psalmist). A jug of wine vinegar was sitting there, so they filled a sponge with it and held it up to Jesus’s lips on a branch. He took a sip and then said, “It’s finished!” Then he lowered his head and let go of his spirit.

Now it was Friday, and the next day was not only a day of rest but also the holy day of Passover. So the Jewish leaders, were eager that the bodies not stay up on the crosses all weekend, and they asked Pilate for their legs to be broken to hasten death. So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the two criminals being crucified there. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he’d already died, they didn’t break his legs. But in order to be sure he was dead one of the soldiers stabbed him in the side with his spear, and blood flowed out with some water. The person who witnessed all this has given his testimony so that you may [come to] have faith in Jesus. His testimony is dependable, and he declares that he has told the complete truth. All this happened to prove the scripture which foretold, “Not one of his bones will be broken.” And elsewhere in scripture it also says, “They will gaze upon the one they pierced.”

Now, after Jesus died, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for permission to take Jesus’s body down for burial. Now, Joseph was a follower of Jesus, but kept it a secret because he’d been afraid of what the other Jewish leaders would do. But with Pilate’s permission he went to take down the body, joined by Nicodemus (the man who had previously talked with Jesus at night) who brought a large amount of burial ointment, myrrh mixed with aloe vera. So they wrapped Jesus’s body in linen and applied the fragrances, according to Jewish burial customs. Now, near the crucifixion site there was a garden that had a tomb carved into the rock, a new one that had never been used. So, because the tomb was close and it was almost nightfall, they laid Jesus there.

Say hello to our new deer camp digs. This trailer, which I bought a couple of weeks ago off Facebook Marketplace, will replace the smaller, older one my sons and I have been using for the past eight years or so.

Next year grandson Colin will turn 12 - the age of majority for deer campers - and we just may require a little expansion.

I''ll haul it up to camp next spring. Meanwhile, it's moored in our backyard while I perform a little TLC on it.

Sharon assures me she's in no danger of falling in love with it.

John 18, Reed's Version

When Jesus was done with his prayer, he left the city and went across the Kedron valley with his apprentices and into the garden that was there. But Judas the traitor also knew that spot, because Jesus often met with his apprentices there. So Judas led a large detachment of Roman soldiers to the garden, as well as temple guards sent by the chief priests and Pharisees, armed with torches and swords. But Jesus knew everything that was about to happen, so he stepped out to face the soldiers, with Judas the traitor standing right there with them. Jesus asked them, “Who is it you’re looking for?” They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” He said, “That’s me.” When he said this, the soldiers recoiled in alarm, falling back to regroup. So Jesus asked them again, “Who is it you’re looking for?” They answered, “Jesus of Nazareth.” So Jesus replied, “I already told you, that’s me. So if it’s only me you want, let these men go.” This confirmed what Jesus had said earlier, “Father, I haven’t lost any of the men You gave me.” But right then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and took a swing at the high priest’s servant, a man named Malchus, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus scolded Peter and told him, “Put your sword away! Don’t you know that I have to face the ordeal which the Father has intended for me?”

So the Roman commander and his soldiers, along with the guards sent from the Jewish council, took Jesus into custody and tied his hands. They first took him to Annas, the former high priest. It was his son-in-law, the current high priest Caiaphas who had advised the Jewish leadership to kill Jesus rather than allow the nation to be split.

As Jesus was led into the palace, Simon Peter was following them, as was another disciple who happened to be an acquaintance of Annas. So he was able to follow the crowd into the courtyard, while Peter waited outside at the gate. Then the disciple who knew Annas went and spoke with the servant girl who was on duty at the gate, and she let Peter come in. But then she said to Peter, “Wait, aren’t you one of that man’s apprentices?” But he replied, “No, I’m not.” Now, all of the servants and guards were standing around a fire they had built to get warm, since it was cold out. So Peter went and stood with them, warming himself too.

Meanwhile, Annas was interrogating Jesus about his apprentices and what he’d been teaching. But Jesus replied, “I’ve been teaching in public to everyone, in the synagogue or in the temple courts, where people can easily hear me. I have no secrets. So why are you trying to get me to incriminate myself? Go find some credible witnesses. The people who listened to me teach, they’ll tell you exactly what I said.” But as he said this, one of the guards there went and struck Jesus across the face. “How dare you speak to the high priest this way?!” Jesus told him, “If I’ve said anything falsely, tell me what was false. But if I’ve told the truth, why did you hit me?” So Annas had Jesus tied up again and sent him to the high priest, Caiaphas.

Now, Simon Peter was still warming himself by the fire, when one of the guards asked him, “You’re not one of his disciples too, are you?” But he denied it and said, “No, I’m not.” One of the servants there was a cousin of the man whose ear Peter cut off, and he said to him, “I saw you with my own eyes in the garden!” But again he denied it. And right then, a rooster crowed.

It was very early in the morning when Caiaphas’s interrogation ended, and Jesus was brought to the Roman governor’s office. But the Jewish men couldn’t enter the building without being ritually contaminated and excluded from the Passover celebration. So Pilate, the governor, met them outside and asked, “What are the charges against this man?” They replied, “Charges? He’s a criminal. That’s all you need to know.” So Pilate told them, “Then go prosecute him in your own courts.” They retorted, “But you Romans won’t let us execute anyone.” This confirmed Jesus’ prediction, when he explained how he was going to die.

Then Pilate went back into his office and had Jesus brought in for questioning. “So, this is the king of Israel?” he said. Jesus replied, “Did you come up with that, or did you hear others say it about me?” Pilate answered, “What am I, Jewish? It’s your own people and leaders that want you dead. Tell me, what was your real crime?” Jesus told him, “My kingdom isn’t an earthly one. If it were, my people would be fighting to free me from the clutches of those bullies who brought me here. But as it is, my kingdom isn’t a part of this world.” Then Pilate said, “Ah, so you admit you’re a king.” Jesus replied, “I guess you could say so, as far as you understand real kingship. My purpose in being born and coming to this world is to proclaim truth to the world. Everyone who is receptive to truth listens to me.” Pilate replied, “Your truth, maybe.”

With this, Pilate went back outside and told the people who’d gathered there, “I can’t find any reason to sentence this man to death. Now, it’s customary for me to release one prisoner to you each Passover. Shall I release this ‘king of Israel’?” But the crowd screamed back, “No! Release Barabbas!” (a man who’d been arrested for revolt).

Fun fact: despite being one of the main POV characters in The Pacific, John Basilone is only tagged as a character in less than 1.3% of the fics for it on AO3! I’ve never tried making icons and they look worse now I’ve posted them than they did while I was making them but first tries and all that :) I promise they’re less pixelated than they are in the header when you actually use them lmao

• he wants to cry, but also kinda just wants to laugh because of how happy he is to see you

•Looking at you out of the window, you look so beautiful. His chest pounds thinking at how lonely it must of been for you while he was gone

• When he finally gets off the train and makes his way to you, It’s like meeting you for the first time all over again.

• He’s nervous, because it’s been so long since he’s actually seen you, What if you don’t like him anymore? what if something happened while he was gone and you don’t see a future with him?

• All of those worries in his head immediately vanish when he succumbs to your warm embrace, it’s like time had never really passed at all.

• Wow, he can’t wait to kiss those soft lips of yours. When he sees you he’s ready to jump off the train while it’s still going because he just can’t wait any longer

• When he does get off, he’s running towards you, dropping all of his luggage as soon as he gets to you, and picking you and swinging you around with joy

• He causes quite a scene but it makes you overjoyed to know he missed you just as much. Seeing that bright smile on his face makes you almost forget how long you guys were apart.

• Once he’s made his way home, said hello to his parents and put his luggage down, he’s immediately on his way to your place.

• “I almost forgot how amazing your hugs were”

Lew ‘Chuckler’ Juergens:

• He’s ecstatic to see you, a big smile is on his face and he couldn’t hide his excitement even if he wanted to.

• Similar to Sidney, he’s picking you up off the ground and spinning you around, but he’s also planting bunches of small kisses all over your face in joy. He knows exactly how to make you feel like the only person in the room.

• He doesn’t even know what to say, or what to think, other then an overwhelming amount of happiness inside of him, he’s just so happy to be with you, he feels complete again.

• When he sets you down he just looks at you in shock, you’re actually here with him, he never thought the day would come when he would get to hold you in his arms again

• “God, i’ve missed you, more than you’ll ever know”

• He’ll probably continue to kiss and hug on you for the rest of the week, not letting you out for his sight at all, with continuous confessions of his love for you.

• “I’ll spend my whole life loving you doll, I mean that.”

Merriell ‘Snafu’ Shelton:

• When gets off the train, he immediately makes his way to your home, he can’t wait any longer to see you, even if it’s later in the night.

• When he gets there and sees you he’s in shock, all he can you is hug you at the moment.

• He feels so many emotions at once, he’s lost so many people to the war, and you’re the first bit of warmth he’s felt in years, he doesn’t want to lose you, he can’t lose you.

• As he’s hugging you he snugs his face into your hair, breathing you in, he’s close to letting his tears fall but he holds them, he’s missed you so much.

• “You been gettin’ along alright without me?” He asks you, raising up from the kiss. You can tell he’s still a little nervous.

• “Barely” You whisper back softly, you can’t say anything more because his lips are connected to yours almost immediately.

• “Let me make up the lost time, dolly. Let me make it up to you. ”

John Basilone:

• Boy is he happy to see you, you’re still fine as ever to him, so good-looking it almost takes his breath away.

• He picks you up and kisses you passionately before you can even say welcome home.

• He’s just glad he’s back to you in one piece, he loves you so much and is so ready to enjoy some alone time with you. All he can do is kiss you over and over again

• “How are you, honey?” Is the first thing he says to you. His voice as smooth and deep as rich chocolate.

• “Good, and you?” “Better now that i’m here with you” He replies back with that familiar smirk on his face

• He can’t feel much more love then what he feels right now, he’s so excited and happy to be with you again, after so long he can finally say everything is back to normal.

• “I love you honey, I hope you always know that”

R.V. Burgin

• Just imagine the smile on the sweet boy’s face when he sees you for the first time in years, he’s so happy and joyous to be around you.

• He feels shy but also not really? It’s just because he hasn’t seen you since forever so it’s kinda all knew to him again, but he doesn’t make it awkward at all, he just reminds you how much he missed you.

• “You know, when it was rough at night out there, I thought of you and then I could finally get some sleep” He immediately starts telling you stories and more about the people he met

• But still he asks you how you are and if anything had changed while he was gone, “I’m glad you didn’t run off with some rich guy while I was gone” 😭

• He probably carries you bridal style in to your guys’ home together and if you guys weren’t already married then he would probably propose soon.

• In general he’s just so enlightened to see you, it just takes so much stress off of his chest.

• When he sees you waiting for him at the train stop his heart picks up so much speed and he feels like he could vomit.

• The waiting almost became unbearable for him, he’d have his luggage ready to set out to you

• When he does get to you he can’t hold back his emotions, he’s so happy all he can do it take you into a big bear hug and laugh

• “Long time no see, right, stranger?” He just looks at you with so much love in his eyes, he’s never felt better then when he’s with you

• He’s just ready for a future with you now, ready to take the next step with you and make you his partner forever

• “I missed you too much, I love you sweetheart.”

Bill ‘Hoosier’ Smith

• It’s like he falls in love with you all over again when he sees you waiting up for him.

• He turns so soft when he feels you in his arms, all he can do is hold you tightly in hopes that you won’t let go

• “I missed you a lot, I don’t ever want to feel that way again”

• He saves the tears for later when you guys are alone, but for now all he can do is kiss you over and over again.

• He’ll probably save a little gift for you to and give it to you then, like I said he really missed you.

• He’ll probably be super close to you for the rest of the day, trying to catch up and see how different it’s changed back home.
