{out of dalmasca} Can we just please talk about Judge Drace's set of armor in FFXII for a second? Because... um...
Tumblr media
She... she has a skirt. Made of metal. Why have I never fully noticed this before or given it the proper attention it was due?
Tumblr media
It looks to me to be in the shape and style of like a Victorian bustle (worn under the skirt of a dress to give shape) or an overskirt (worn over a skirt for fashion purposes or sometimes for added warmth. In this case, of course, it's just part of the armor, but even so...
Tumblr media
They're literally hinged metal plates designed to look like frills or ruffles. She even has matching spaulders? Also made to look frilly? That's... so cool?
Tumblr media
Nothing says, "I am a force to be reckoned with who can easily kill you and also I'm going be a fucking lady while I do it," like wearing skirt armor. She's not at all shying away from the fact that she's often the only major female Judge Magister in a room full of enormous, posturing male egos. She's handling her shit and looking good while she does it.
I love this because it smashes that horrible "strong woman" trope in writing whereby, in order to be or seem strong among men, women must become more masculine. Or conversely, that by being strong women, they are somehow less feminine. As if, in order to achieve one, you must give up the other. Nope, Drace is here to say that's total crap, heh. She's such a badass and I love her. I really wish they hadn't killed her in the game. Would've loved to have seen more of her. T_T

the use of honorific and titles are important in japanese language, especially in ivalice where there’s many sorts of alliances and nobles. higher ranking, lower ranking, or even equals. in here i have compiled what the upper-ranking archadians call each other.
Tumblr media
in here we can see the judge magisters refer to vayne as 殿 / dono, meaning “lord vayne”.
with the exception of judge ghis, who refers to vayne as his name directly without honorifics. this is considered rude, considering the context of ghis’ dialogue, yes this is very ambitious of him.
judge bergan is also an exception, he starts with “lord vayne / vayne-dono”. when gramis is assassinated he calls vayne 阁下 which is “his excellency vayne / vayne-kakka”. he is the only judge magister to say so. this is considered high respect, and in context of the scene, bergan readily accepts vayne as the new emperor.
NOTE: that  阁下 / kakka is not a japanese kanji. that is chinese hanzi. meaning “your mightiness” “one that is directly under the line of succession”, like ... next in line to rule. however this translates to jp as “your excellency” only. but now we know the connotation.
Tumblr media
judge drace refers to larsa as 様 / sama. in english this means the same as “lord larsa”, but sama implies closeness and yet respect. this makes sense considering drace is larsa’s mentor and guardian. they are very close, yet she still respects him as a lord. this is different from doctor cid and vayne as seen in here;
Tumblr media
doctor cid calls vayne あんた / anta. and vayne’s name directly. no titles, full casual. this is not considered rude because as written in ultimania, they are comrades/friends who see each other as equals, not higher or lower despite one of them being much older. (okay, maybe a little ‘you, young man’ in context of anta).
and next we have house solidor. phew, they are...quite something.
Tumblr media
gramis refers to his sons by name. he is the dad.
larsa calls his father  父上 / chichi-ue (lord father). high level of respect and acknowledges gramis as his father, larsa calls his brother 兄上 / ani-ue (lord brother). larsa is very familial unlike vayne,
vayne calls his father  陛下 / heika / gramis heika (your excellency. and in rabanastre, lord gramis). japanese imperial style, the most formal style of nobility in japan. which can be considered odd, he is speaking to his own father in context, why such formality? even larsa calls gramis “father”ーーーthis is because vayne dislikes gramis, he refers to him in a distant, cold way. not familial at all. he never called him a father.
vayne calls larsa by name. familiarity.
and last we have the senate;
Tumblr media
the senate refers to vayne and larsa as  殿/ dono (lord vayne, lord larsa). the same honorific as what the judgimagi call their masters. i think this is the common honorific for vayne and larsa, common archadians would refer to them with this 殿 / dono, too.

Truthfully, Gylfie is rather lonely.
She would never admit it, of course - she's too proud to admit such a thing. But... the friends she had grown up with, she lost when she joined the military. Her schedule was strict and rigorous, and she lost touch and they drifted apart. As she clawed her way up, there were few who would even consider her an equal, let alone a friend. She had to fight to prove herself - fight to get even a fraction of respect the men she fought alongside earned with little effort. She became fierce and ruthless, and began to keep distance between herself and those around her to keep control. To keep one step ahead of everyone else. No matter how she presented herself, she knew she would be judged and ridiculed, so she stopped caring about what others thought of her. Of how she appeared to be.
She had yearned for her father's affections and pride, and it took her nearly losing her life to realize she would never even earn a moment's attention from him. She had befriended Ffamran, and his disappearance felt like a personal slight. Even though she still holds a level of respect and gratitude for him after he took her mother and sister out of Archades, and now understands his reasoning for leaving, she feels she has changed too much to try and rekindle that friendship. She still loves her mother and sister, but since they left, she has made little effort to keep in touch. She feels they would be disappointed and disgusted with her for everything she has done, and fails to see that they still love her. She grew close with Drace and Gabranth, yet... even with them, she held them at a distance, even if unintentionally, to protect herself from further hurt. And still, their deaths broke a part of her.
Her loneliness is suffocating, but... it's a burden she has no choice but to bear if she wants to see Archadia thrive. If she wants to keep her vow to keep Larsa safe.

what is your personal take on astarion remembering the first decade of his slavery and the "darling boy/sweet man" that he didn't bring back? do you think he had romantic feelings for this person or do you think they were just the first of many other innocent souls that he had to stop feeling sorry/caring for because of what happened afterwards?
I have made a post about this before. Not exactly this, but I reference that incident as a sign of how protective a person Astarion naturally is.
I think Astarion is naturally a protector. Hence the fact that he even chose to be judge so he can help people find justice. Might not be the only reason he studied law, but certainly would've been a part of it.
I think when one is in the situation Astarion was in, one would find oneself finding anything to justify one's actions, especially when one can't control them. So, Astarion must've told himself, "most people are flawed or bad in some way so it's okay if I take them to Cazador." It's their punishment for not being better people. It's fair in a twisted manner of logic.
But, that logic must've not worked when he met this innocent guy, who was a "sweet, sweet man," and a "darling". I'm sure he would've felt very protective of the boy and maybe even liked him. It would've been wrong to take him to Cazador because there is no reason. That's why he ran away.
So, I don't think he was in love with the boy. Astarion is a realist and he would've been under no illusions that he can sustain any relationship with anyone outside of the palace (or even inside it. Slavers keep slaves separate bc there's power in unity.), nor would he have had the emotional availability for love. He doesn't even the emotional availablilty for it in the main campaign until act 3 lmao. He could've had a soft spot for the man, but not love.
I think Astarion stopped caring not after the boy but after Cazador's punishment. I cannot imagine even a few hours of being inside that tomb, let alone an entire year. That has to completely change a person. It is a lot of time to panic, think, breakdown, reflect, create resolutions and completely 180° your entire perspective on life. That's when I think Astarion became as selfish as he did.
He prayed to be saved, no one did. He tried doing good by saving the boy, and he got punished severely for it. He wanted to be a magister and be on the side of justice, but he got kidnapped for it. I feel like the boy was taken anyway by some other spawn, just to spite Astarion as well, so him running away was useless too.
I think being in that tomb changed Astarion completely and that's when he decided that being helpful and 'good' is not the right thing to do, so he became who he we meet in the main campaign. Selfish, ruthless and a realist.

@leomonae Hmm. Were [judges] always chosen from the ranks of the patriars, even 200 years back?
That's actually a good point that I failed to factor in and just had to go research - the only aspect of it I'd considered prior was the fact that the new money minority amongst the Peers wouldn't count in this equation (whether Astarion would be from a Patriar family, and thus require human ancestry to make sense in the lore) because he died long before they were established. (I was also incorrect about lawyers: barristers are a rare (and insanely expensive to hire) minority within the city, though from what else I've seen on the topic of lawyers in the realms that is a very new evolution. As Astarion says himself though; he was a judge, he made rulings.)
By default the role of judge is performed by the Dukes, when a crime is too serious and under dispute (or a Patriar, or somebody in similar power (*cough*high ranking temple clergy*cough*) wants it taken to court) and can't be settled by officers of the Fist or the Watch. Within the Gate's legal system it's rare for a case to require a magister to rule on it, so there's not much call for judges in the first place. Rule of thumb: you just go straight to jail… or the gallows! Hm, I'm suddenly reminded of Angelo sentencing the party back in BG1: "I am commander of the Flaming Fist. I will be your judge, jury and executioner, pardon the cliché."
In the 15th century the Dukes may delegate to a member of the Parliament of Peers, but that itself raises some questions because the Peers exist because the Patriars saw an opportunity to grab power and took it*, and this power was not delegated… so it's quite possible that when Astarion was alive you had to be a Grand Duke to serve as a judge. Grand Duke Ancunín! The Gate is doomed. (I somehow don't think Astarion was ever a duke, I think that would've come up at some point.)
*"Hand all the power over the nobility". Even before the Peers the Patriars were using their money and influence - Dukes were voted for, and democracy held sway, but the nobility are still happy to try and game the system, though they weren't as successful before they could overrule the Council of Four. Nowadays they're doing it with the Peers, who will have a handful of non-Patriar members that got in by having money and (trades) Guild and Patriar connections. Dalyria, I have always mistrusted you even before finding out you were experimenting on 12 year olds, and I am staring very suspiciously at you right now. What were your connections, doctor? (The part of the systems that aren't rigged by the Patriars are usually rigged by the Flaming Fist.)
However there's nothing concrete about legal systems in the Gate in the late 13th century that I can find, only information for the 15th. So if you don't like the idea of Astarion being a Patriar here's your grounding (Which tbh, I don't necessarily like it. I see him as new money for some reason.) He would need connections and money for one of the city rulers to known him to declare him a proxy judge, if they did that back then (which, again, suggests Patriar), but there's nothing textual here to say anything concrete or say anyone's wrong.
Another tidbit of information: you don't get paid for sitting in as a judge unless you're taking bribes from interested parties. It is not a career, it's an occasional hobby. "I was a magister" = "Sometimes people bribed me to decide who lives and who dies and I probably decided based on the highest bidder and/or who was less likely to shank me for making this ruling."

Basics
Name: Eyri Styrbraena (translated to "Wandering Starbreaker")
It isn't her true name, of course - rather, the name is a curse of sorts that she's embraced.
Her true name, still unknown to anyone (aside from family) canonically, is Maetianka Thosinbharwyn (Mighty Anchor, daughter of Grey Bear).
Nicknames: Starbreaker, Big Lady, Large Mom
Age: 30 as of ARR (maybe around 36-ish by the start of DT? Give us a solid timeline, P L E A S E )
Nameday: In game, she shares my birthday, but canonically it is the 19th Sun of the Second Astral Moon (March 19, one of the three potential dates for the Spring Equinox / first day of Spring).
Race: Roegadyn, Sea Wolf
Gender: Female (She/Her)
Orientation: Pansexual / Panromantic
Profession: Not counting WoL adventures - former pirate, former bouncer. She currently holds the position of Judge Magister in the Free Company, Knights of the Round. Eyri stands as one of three of the Lord Commander's most trusted knights.
Physical Aspects
Hair: Snowy white, though as it gets longer, the ends begin to darken to a dark grey - a couple of steps above black. She keeps it fairly short so it doesn't get in the way. She has bangs to hide a scar above her right eye.
Eyes: At birth, lavender.
From ages 14-35, her left eye became a dark purple like umbral aether, and her right eye became blinded and pale blue like astral aether. The color change and blindness was due to an aetherial imbalance that came about when Hydaelyn resurrected her from the lifestream after a fatal accident.
Tumblr media
(real talk, when I first made Eyri, I had no knowledge or context of Hydaelyn or Zodiark's colorations, nor of the fact that astral aether = stasis, so it really was a happy accident that I was able to fit into lore)
This aetherial imbalance was eventually fixed and her eyecolor returned to lavender once more. The blindness in her right eye remains - it can sense light, but that's about it.
Tumblr media
Skin: Deep, slate grey. She also always wears some form of black lip stain.
Tattoos/scars: She has full sleeves on both arms, then one on her right...flank.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She has battle scars all over her body - primarily some claw marks that wrap from her left collarbone to her shoulder blade, earned from fighting a particularly nasty coeurl encounter; 3 jagged gashes across her torso and 3 across her left calf that were all caused by a large, mace-wielding minotaur; a scar that wraps around her right ankle and heel, that very narrowly missed her Achilles, inflicted by her sister's blade.
The primary scar that she's had the longest, and keeps hidden beneath her hair, is the scar above her right eye. This is from a fatal fall that radically shifted her fate. She sometimes views it as a curse and is ashamed of it.
Family
Parents: Father - Thosinbhar Wyzniyrnsyn (Grey Bear, son of White Iron, goes by Thosin for short)
Mother - Wiltrael Berkarenawyn (Wild Doe, daughter of Mountain Harvester, goes by Wilt for short)
Siblings: Sister - Rymmwaen Thosinbharwyn (Frost Wind, daughter of Grey Bear, goes by Rymm for short)
Grandparents: More Roegadyn names LET'S GOOO
Paternal Grandfather - Wyzniyrn Fyrilspaersyn (White Iron, son of Lost Sparrow)
Paternal Grandmother - Fyrfyst Syhrstralwyn (Fire Fist, daughter of Fearless Arrow)
Maternal Grandfather - Berkarena Pfarstyrmsyn (Mountain Harvester, son of Walking Storm)
Maternal Grandmother - Wytageim Hywabfrynwyn (Water Jewel, daughter of Hawk Friend)
In-laws and Other: EVEN MORE NAMES (help)
Brother-in-Law - Ronthnfarr Abylntyrbsyn (Running Bull, son of Raging Cyclone... Literally just goes by Ron for short LMAO)
Nephew - Doennahr Ronthnfarrsyn (Thundering Eagle, son of Running Bull, goes by Doen for short)
Pets: Her chocobo and trusted companion, Fernando.
She didn't keep any other pets until recently. There's a small crab that started following her around, and so she started caring for it. Then she gave it a knife to hold in its claw because she thought it was funny.
Tumblr media
Skills
Abilities: For the majority of her life, she had aethersight, and could see the auras of people's souls. It was an ability that she could not turn off or will away, and it came at a heavy cost: severe aether sickness. This manifested as agonizing and debilitating migraines centered at her blind eye. She avoided magic and crowds as best as she could, and she was able to teleport in case of an emergency, but she would be out of commission for several days afterward.
While this ability was seen as useful to her allies, she viewed it as a curse and began advocating for her own well-being.
Hobbies: Eyri enjoys sketching, usually maps of various cities or towns, as well as learning new things in general. Whether it's studying new languages or learning the customs of different cultures.
Traits
Most Positive Trait: Being selflessly protective
Most Negative Trait: Being wrecklessly protective
Likes
Colors: Black, purple, green, red
Smells: Coffee, forests and mountain air, campfires, fresh tobacco, wildflowers
Textures: Thick wool fabrics
Drinks: Coffee, any kind of alcohol, and any drinks that are warm and comforting
Other Details
Smokes: Occasionally tobacco, and rarely pipeweed - she did not start partaking in pipeweed until after her aether became rebalanced because it would exacerbate the effects of her uncontrollable aethersight. She most commonly smoked cigarettes while working at The Wet Whisker (a speakeasy masked as a flower shop) as a bouncer, or when she was highly stressed. Now she does it much less frequently, and usually for fun.
Drinks: If alcoholic, she will always ask for the strongest drink on the menu and she has a very high tolerance - she used to commonly drink this way to dull the effects of her uncontrollable aethersight.
Drugs: She has never used anything stronger than liquor or pipeweed...unless Yorick Lecannon's beverage, The Olympus, counts as hard drugs...a signed waiver is required, and so far it's the only concoction that has knocked Eyri out cold in seconds...
Mount Issuance: She was issued a chocobo liscense after providing several years of work for the Maelstrom and Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn and becoming a trusted individual in her eyes. In recognition for her deeds to Limsa Lominsa and its Grand Company, Merlwyb personally offered Eyri a position within their ranks. She lovingly named her chocobo Fernando.
While working at The Wet Whisker, she found herself in possession of a motorcycle that she uses to traverse the main continent. How she came to be in possession of such magitek is a question that aught not be asked.
Been Arrested: ......There do not appear to be any records detailing any arrest history......
-------------------------------------
That's about it, folks!
Feel free to do one of these if you want, even if you haven't been tagged <3

{out of dalmasca} In addition to buying the upgraded Gabranth figure, I also recently purchased the set of Judge Magister busts that came with the collector's edition PS4 that included the Zodiac Age digital remaster of FFXII. Got them super cheap on eBay, so if anyone else wants a set, definitely check out secondhand markets for good deals. Gabranth and Drace are my favorites, so they're in the front, Zargabaath is okay, so he can be in the front too. Barely pictured at the back left is Ghis, and way behind Gabranth is Bergan... because nobody wants to see him. XD

Hi! Might I request Dorian witnessing his lover get a beat down (verbal and physical) by his father after he finds out his sons with a fellow man?
Love your work, Terribly sorry if this is against anything!
The vitriol is esoteric enough to be truly Tevene, and cruel enough to be his father's. There is fine in his fist, but Dorian has learned to recognize his lover's face enough to know that the Inquisitor would not welcome his interference at this time.
And it makes him sick and furious to listen to his father lambast the greatest man Dorian has ever known with the arrogance only a Tevinter magister can truly summon. As if Halward Pavus has any right to judge the Herald of Andraste, no matter the man's choices in bed mates. It is clear that the Inquisitor is unfazed by the tirade, but the scion of House Pavus cannot push against the feeling of being fifteen years old again and helpless against the despair and pain at losing his father's regard--
The necromancer is so caught in that terrible spiral of memory that the first ringing slap staggers him more than his amatus. Rage deamons howl at the back of his mind for entrance into the mortal world, and Dorian will later find bloody furrows in his palm from the bite of his own nails. He is going to kill his father, hang Tevinter and all its good, and declare himself a southern mage for life. Except...
Except there is something in the Inquisitor's quiet gaze, the solemn and serene power that has looked on the Breach and Corypheus and certain death without a quaver. Even Halward's roiling anger seems to falter before it; when the inquisitor speaks, his tone matches the gaze. Power, yes, but the simple understanding that what is before him is not truly a threat.
"He was right, Dorian. Blood magic truly is the grasping attempt by a weak mind incapable of better solutions. We are done here."
Halward's next blow bounces off Dorian's shield, and while the younger Pavus wishes desperately to turn more magic onto the paterfamilias of his house, somehow that quiet statement is enough.
Will be enough, in the quiet moments of doubt and pain and sorrow, for the rest of his life.
(Later, he will show his amatus how a stronger mind is capable of all manner of better solutions.)
