Y’all. I saw Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings today, and holy shit is it good. (I’m not Asian-American, or asian at all, and I don’t know much about Chinese culture or language so I can’t talk to how good it is at paying homage and respecting the heritage it’s pulling from, but) damn it’s a good Marvel movie. I wanted to share some of my favorite parts.

(Spoilers below the cut, duh.)

In no particular order...

Gotta agree with Simu Liu about the moment when Katy (Awkwafina) teases Sang-Chi about changing his name to Shawn. That was just such a genius response to his dark and tragic backstory, for her to focus on the part that she can say: “That! That is a thing my dumbass best friend would totally do. Yep. Love him.”

When Shang-Chi tells Wenwu in their fight that Ying Li wouldn’t even want him back after what he had done following her death. That just hit so hard. I loved Simu’s delivery and Tony Leung Chiu-wai’s response (totally non-verbal but oohf!) just so good!

Trevor! Oh my god. Maybe I’m in the minority, but I LOVED Ben Kingsley in Ironman 3. I grinned so hard (behind my mask) when I realized who was making all that noise. “You can see Morris too?!” He was so happy to know his beloved ‘imaginary’ friend was real. It was heartwarming and hilarious.

I swear the first fight scene between Wenwu and Ying Li had more chemistry than most romance movies. And it HAD to! The rest of the movie wouldn’t work if the audience didn’t believe this thousand year old power hungry mad kung-fu crime lord didn’t fall stupid head-over-heals “I will break the world for you” in love with this magical woman in the forest. And you better believe I ate that shit up. There was some meaningful eye contact going on there!

Shang-Chi as a character also stole my heart! I loved the way he was portrayed, not as a perfect person: he lies, he avoids his problems, he’s irresponsible and struggles with some moral dilemmas. But he’s also compassionate, empathizes with his sister and father, dedicated as shown by his training, and, when he’s able to, just wants to have a good time. Best of all, he doesn’t have an ounce of arrogance. He never brags about his abilities or seeks recognition for them (unlike his sister who talks about teaching herself with clear pride). In Tao Lo Shang-Chi asks his aunt to teach him their style, open to learning, never assuming his skills are enough. In the cage match, losing in front of a jeering crowd doesn’t appear to mater to him. He’s incredibly competent, he knows it, but he’s never arrogant.

Last but not least; Wong welcoming Shang-Chi to the crazy train wreck that is the life of an Avenger is a perfect ending for the movie only made better by karaoke!
