Tiempo, un café y una limonada sin azúcar.

Desde que soy pequeño vivo en cierto modo obsesionado con el tiempo.

Siempre he tenido claro que es lo más valioso que tenemos y, sin embargo, nunca he entendido lo mal que (a mí entender) lo empleamos. "Malvivimos" 5 días a la semana para poder disfrutar uno o dos, de los cuales -encima- la mitad estamos durmiendo.

Siempre he pensado lo bonito que sería poder realmente disponer de mi tiempo e ir un poco más allá, ver qué hay alrededor del mundo, descubrir cómo invierten su tiempo otras personas y enriquecer el mío por el camino.

Para ello, el primer paso era mentalizarme en no tenerle miedo a las cosas o, mejor dicho, asumir que el miedo (y, sobre todo, la incertidumbre) es una sensación natural consustancial al ser humano, pero siendo también consciente de que muchas veces ese miedo es irracional, y es este segundo el que tenemos (o tengo) que intentar dejar de lado. Quién me conoce sabe de mis miedos a las aves (sí, una fobia absurda que he heredado de mi madre y que, cuando cuento, suele originar cuanto menos una carcajada); o mi miedo a hablar en público (es superior a mí: se me traba la lengua, empiezo a sudar y el discurso puede tornar en lo ridículo). Se trata de miedos irracionales, ya que no creo que un gorrión pueda suponer ninguna amenaza real, ni hablar delante de un grupo de personas pueda condenarme al ostracismo, por muy mal que lo haga.

Pues bien, otro de los miedos irracionales con el que viven la mayoría de las personas (al menos en occidente) es el miedo a salir de su zona de confort; cambiar de trabajo, pareja o vivienda puede convertirse en una auténtica pesadilla por una cuestión puramente cultural. Y en eso, creo, tengo yo algo de ventaja. En ocasiones pienso que es parte del legado que me dejó mi difunto padre, o simplemente que mis propias circunstancias y experiencias vitales han determinado que asuma los cambios con bastante normalidad. Sea como fuere, lo único cierto es que no he sentido ni un ápice de miedo en ningún momento desde que empezamos a planear esta aventura, he tenido siempre claro que quería hacerlo y que era el momento, y que además contaba con la mejor compañera de viaje que se puede tener.

Y el momento llegó, y empezó esta locura. Y aquí me encuentro ahora, escribiendo estas líneas en una playa de la isla de Koh Rong mientras me tomo un café (Candela un limonada, después de insistir al camarero varias veces para que no le pusiesen azúcar), y sintiéndome inmensamente afortunado por todo lo que estoy aprendiendo, viviendo y sintiendo. ¡Y ojo que todo no es de color de rosa! Que nadie me malinterprete, que acostumbrarse a este clima no es fácil, ni a las continuas picaduras de bichos (que no sabes ya ni cuáles son), ni a vivir con un presupuesto ajustado que nos permita mantenernos durante un tiempo mientras encontramos trabajo... Pero lo que recibo es, con creces, muchísimo más que todo lo que me está costando.

Seguiremos disfrutando de estos ratitos de felicidad que nos regala la vida.

Gracias por leernos y un abrazo inmenso desde esta pequeña isla.

Paradise Found...With a Few Exceptions

What’s not to love about waking up to a beach like this every day? Well very little actually. In a last minute decision we scrapped our plans to visit Krati due to the 7.5 hour bus ride, and instead retreated to the Cambodian island of Koh Rong for a couple of recovery days after Phnom Penh and before meeting friends in Saigon for 4 weeks of travel in Vietnam.

Koh Rong is reached by some sketchy transportation from Sihanoukville. Sihanoukville itself used to be a gorgeous beachfront town, but it is now a completely dug up, dusty building site for several kilometres along the beach as Chinese companies build HUGE skyscraper hotels. All that’s left is dust, dust, and more dust. Arriving on Koh Rong was a delight after all the dust!

With very little infrastructure, there are no cars on Koh Rong, limited internet speed, and a couple of small convenience stores, with the exception of one small tourist town, your world is very laid back and you are forced to relax. One day we walked along the 4km beach to the “town” where we saw Justin Beiber’s “baber!”

Another day we walked the other direction and saw building bricks being unloaded from their delivery. Scooters run up and down beach taxing passengers from one beach to the next, (if you don’t want to do the walk).

So...what are these exceptions I mentioned? Garbage for one. Every day we were picking up plastic bottles washing up on the shores. Every day we saw tons of plastic refuse laying around the beaches. And of course my little dog story: there are several happy beach dogs who hang around the hostels and hotels on the beach. One night during dinner at the hostel next door we heard a horrible sound of a dog being hurt. Several young guys playing billiards, dropped their cues and went to help. Apparently a dog was being attacked by a man who wanted to eat it. The dog’s front leg is broken, but in a heartwarming ending, the other beach dogs rallied around protecting him, and the beachfront hotels/hostels have taken to feeding him until he’s again able to fend for himself. It broke my heart though: both for the dog and for the level of poverty and desperation that drove this man to do this. I wanted to beat him up, then give him 3 chickens.

Having said the above, I would return to Koh Rong in a heartbeat. It was amazing and thus far my favourite spot in Cambodia, (although in fairness I currently only have Phnom Penh for comparison.) I would continue to pick up the plastic off the beach as we did on our walks; I would continue to spend my money there knowing it was helping the locals, and perhaps saving some lovely little doggies.
