MAG 31 - after my apple cutting sessions was over I wanted to listen to one more episode, but it was late and I had to take a shower and go to bed. So I thought if I turn the volume on my speaker up very, very loud, I would hear it over the water stream. I did not and only got bits and pieces… Went to bed listening to the whole episode again.

Oh god, someone here on the a-mag-a-day blog wrote that Jon sounds like Stede in this statement and now I can't unhear it!!!! xD

"I mean, I’d thought about trying it in this country" - ok, what are the requirements to go hunting in the UK? Because in Austria you absolutely can not go out and just do that, that's poaching. You have to get a hunting licence, which requires training (about 4 months) and passing a test. It costs about 750€ and then you gotta pay for a hunting pass (annual or daily pass). You are only able to by a hunting pass if you are member of a hunting club (which also costs a small annual fee). So yeah, I understand when people go to the US to go hunting… My US friends asks us last time we were visiting if we wanted to go into the woods (also in the Appalachians, though the very southern part of them) shooting their guns. We, super European, were like NOPE.

Your Legion of Superheroes Reboot

So, out of the blue, DC puts YOU in charge of a new Legion series. You can have a core team of 10 members; any version of any character from any era. (How do they all fit together? Uh, Hypertime, or something.) Who do you pick?

its a question I saw asked a couple of years back, and now I pose it to you, with the request you show your work and WHY said Legionnaires make your cut.

And, to get the ball rolling and show I ask nothing of you I cannot do myself, my picks and reasoning, plus a handy cheat to pad the numbers

of the core trio, I think we can get by with one or two of them, and Saturn Girl makes a perfect straight woman to the rest of the antics. Cosmic Boy's off doing, I dunno, something, while Garth's sudden leave of absence is an ongoing subplot (probably looking for Mekt) Up next are the mainstays, and while Brainy's the obvious pick, so too is Bouncing Boy, who often feels like the heart of the team and the most 'grounded' of them. There's some very Spock/McCoy banter between them I also pick Lightning Lass and Violet ("just Violet, thanks"), who gets her PHZ upgrade of being able to go giant, giving us some muscle. Ayla is one of the viewpoint characters, tying into the Garth plot by being asked to "fill in" while he's away. Turns out in the field, Ayla's so much like her brother that people outside the immediate team think Garth's transitioned via profem and is just being shy. that she and Violet quickly develop a will-they/won’t-they romantic tension is going to be an active subplot Actual Asian Karate Kid next, and to the delight of Nemesis Kid, yes, Val's 'space karate' ("that's the closest Interlac gets to translation") is a supernatural martial art, so in the event magic creeps into the plot, at least one of our heroes knows what's going on without having to call up the White Witch. Unluckily for Nemesis Kid, Val also knows the rumored Earther martial arts style known only as "Batman". Chameleon also makes the cut, and why yes, they ARE the adopted progeny of googolnaire R. J. Brande, thank you for asking. Reep's outgoing, genderfluid, and understandably full of themself as a celebrity turned hero. think 80's era wolfman/perez Gar Logan, and my apologies to Cham fans who think I'm butchering his personality. As apparently one of the few people who liked what I saw/heard of the Abnet/Lanning era of LoSH, we'll add Shikari/Dawnstar as the proud & scrappy angry bug lady.

I was going to add Wildfire, what with the duo practically being a matched set, but Ultra boy is such a legion staple, so Jo Nah gets in as the other viewpoint character ("It's this or Space Juvie").

And we’ll round things out with XS, because its always nice to have an optimistic, go-getting speedster, even if she can by a little stuck up about her part in the Flash legacy. That's the core cast. now for my promised cheat, this being "they should be on the team, but they're supporting cast for now", so... Luornu Durgo is the seemingly overworked support staffer. Our active cast have twigged that it's like there's two or three of her, but have yet to grasp the numbers of the future Duplicate Girl Tenzil Kem is the Legion's definitely overworked Lawyer/PR guy, whom Cham regards as "My incredibly boring but actually kinda awesome big brother figure, not that I'll admit that... you aren't recording this, right?" Princess Jeka Wynzorr Wilimena Morgana Daergina Annaxandra Projectra Velorya Vauxhall of Orando (scaly lamia, because I liked that look). while not a member of the Legion, often calls on them for help. Karate Kid is seriously crushing on her. Tinya Wazzo, "unofficial liason" to the UP, in that her mother, UP president Wazzo, put her there as an internship for 'work experience', and heads will literally roll if word gets back that Tinya was anywhere near the actual action The "White Witch" of the Sorcerers' Planet is both ally and antagonist to the legion, depending on the plot, rarely seen without her trusted bodyguard Blok. Is trying to get ahead of some particularly nasty prophecies of her people, which range from "eaters of the sun" to "return of the sorcerer king" and even "The Great Darkness". Drake "Wildfire" Burroughs. Friend of Jo's from his troublemaker days. but the incident that got Jo eaten by a space whale also turned Drake into living energy. Angry and bitter, especially because he was pressganged by Leland McCauley onto his Workforce of indentured superbeings while Jo's a full on superhero, but deep down wants to be a good guy.

The Boiling Isles

The following is a writeup for the setting of the Owl House for use in the Dungeons & Dragons setting of Ravenloft. For those only just discovering Owl House, please be advised that MASSIVE spoilers for the entire series are below the cut

The Boiling Isles

A realm of everyday Witches & Demons Darklord: Emperor Belos Genre: Dark Fantasy, Horror Comedy Hallmarks: Conformity, lies and betrayal Mist talismans: Broken Palisman, Coven signet ring, Hexes Hold'em deck The Boiling Isles is the name for the cluster of islands formed from the impossibly huge remains of a being known only as The Titan, the largest of which being the torso, floating on a vast, boilingly hot sea. Architecture is as much hewn or grown as it is built, and the Isles are populated by exclusively nonhuman races. By Domain standards, The Boiling Isles are surprisingly no more or less dangerous than most planes in the Multiverse. Adventurers from all walks of life face their occupational hazards, but the average citizen goes about their day in peace and order. All under the watchful eye of Emperor Belos and his Imperial coven. Under his rule, 'wild' magic is strictly outlawed, and recognized magics are just as strictly regimented. Those deemed 'unsuitable', or unwilling to conform to the expected norm are threatened with anything from imprisonment to petrification, and even loyal servants of the realm are subject to sudden tests of 'moral purity' or 'unfortunate accidents’. Treachery is a constant in the Boiling Isles. Empty promises are given out by the rich and powerful to exploit those under them, monsters disguise themselves as kindly wizards to lure in their next meal of unsuspecting adventurers, and otherwise rational people are frequently led on by predatory schemes that bleed away everything they have. Even professional competitions have suddenly introduced or obscure rules that serve only to hand out immediate victory to one player and invalidate the efforts of everyone else. Noteworthy Features - Magic runs rampant in the Boiling Isles, to the point that there are no non-magical races. Islanders who resemble humans are witches, those who don't are Demons. - Many magic users in the Boiling Isles have a Palisman, a familiar made from magical wood (uncommon magical item, requires attunement), but these are of escalating rarity as they're confiscated by the Emperor's Coven. - the Emperor's rule began in living memory, in the wake of a terrible disaster, and recognized by his ability to speak with the Titan itself - Magic is strictly regulated under the coven system, and each Coven can only use that form of magic. Settlements & Sites - Bonespurough: The largest and cosmopolitan of the communities in the Boiling Isles. - The Conformatorium: The central prison complex of the Boiling Isles, the Conformatorium is a massive fortress and literal dungeon where those whose will is not in lockstep with the Imperial norm are sent - The Schools: Hexside, Glandus and St. Epidermis are the three primary learning institutions on the Boiling Isles, each one tasked with teaching students in the use of magic under the imperial coven system, by whatever means the current headmaster deems necessary, up to and including mind-manipulating 'detentions' and other artifacts of dubious morality - Imperial Palace: home and stronghold to the emperor and his elite Imperial Coven. Those who enter as prisoners are often only seen again as statues.

Anyway, I am here to share what I am feeling again. Aww. Feels like I'm 13 years old again!! When I first created a personal tumblr just to kwento everything that has been going on in my lifeee :''> I was contented with it, na pinopost ko lang lahat parang online journal kasi with pictures pa until I received my first like sa post na yun. I got hungry for more. So I discovered the filipino tumblr where pinoys lurk here on tumblr na nagpopost din ng quotes and everything. Basically, parang twitter? Hahaha. Although parang di ganon kalaki yung community. Wait nawala na ko sa kwento. Ayun na nga, I got hungry for the likes, reblogs, anonymous messages, messages from mutuals, I was just hungry for attention. Tapos it drained me too. I was a teen, emotional HAHAHA. Felt like I have to be the center of the universe. Lol. But then I grew up, I discovered who I am, because obviously I went to university where it has become my eye-opener. I discovered myself more, I was getting my shit done, I am becoming my own. So yeah, I learned a lot.

Here it goes.

I am currently unemployed. 2 months. Resigned from my previous employer. Because I feel like there was something lacking with the management. And yea another reason is because sobrang nakakapagod sa physical and mental health. As a healthcare worker, I was doubting myself and anxiety creeps in every second I get to work. I needed to recharge and rethink my decisions in life. JK. I just needed rest. And then think things through, what I want to pursue next.

Think it was the hospital that's really giving me anxiety. But then I am a HCW, this is normal. Anxiety is a part of the daily routine. So who am I kidding?

Now I am looking for another hospital for my second job. LOL. Pakshet. Sabi ko napagod nga ako sa hospital so bakit yun padin hinahanap ko. putangina kasi ng inflation, ni baby m. HAHAHA. OO isisisi ko talaga sa gobyerno yung nararamdaman ko ngayon.

Una sa lahat, ayaw ko pang sukuan yung hospital. Gusto ko pang sumubok nang mas matagal. Mga dalawang taon siguro. Tapos lilipad na ko pa ibang bansa para maging OFW. At hindi ko alam kung saan ko gustong mabuhay... basta ngayon ang alam ko gusto ko na makaalis sa lugar kung nasan ako. I need a new environment. I feel like that's the solution to my problem right now lol. Iniisip ko siguro mas magiging okay ako kung magisa ako, living alone, for my peace of mind. Yung kahit umuwi ako at umiyak dahil sa trabaho, walang magsasabi sakin na "Alam mo ikaw kasi, ang dali mong panghinaan ng loob. Ang bilis mong sumuko". Pero kaya ko talaga iniiyak kasi gusto ko lang ilabas yung pagod. At kapag sinasabi kong "ayoko na"... KImmy lang yon :( HAHAHA. Pero inayawan ko nga talaga ang first job lol. I feel like I need to be alone :((( para mapilitan akong kayanin. Kayanin lahat, kayanin mag trabaho, para sa bills, para matuto sa mga simpleng bagay katulad ng pagdedesisyon kung anong uulamin, anong isusuot sa lakad, hindi yung lagi akong nanghihingi ng opinion ng ibang tao sa paligid ko dahil nga mas nagrerely ako sa decision nila kesa sa utak ko :) Kasi I don't trust myself, I know I'm gonna make bad decisions kaya hinihingi ko opinion nila :) HEHE. Gusto ko matuto magisa talaga :(((

Feeling ko worthless useless ako as of the moment LOL. Kasi wala pa kong nahahanap na work na gusto ko :( Na dapat nga kumuha na agad ako dahil ang daming nag hire, ako lang tong mapili punyeta. Kapal ng mukha, kala mo mayaman :---) Eh atat na atat na nga makaalis ng bansa :P HOIII tanggapin mo na trabajo teh :(( Di ka mayaman, wala kang pera pang apply para makalabas ng bansa pota ka. HMP.

Reliability-wise the gun keeps on ticking. Your hand and hold will probably be different and you may not experience that. I could change my grip, but that would mean changing the entire way I draw and fire a gun. That’s not comfortable, and it could be due to my big paws and my preference for a high grip. There’s not much of a beavertail on the grip and, with my large hands, I got some mighty bad slide bite with every shot. The biggest downside to the gun is the rear of the grip and the Tenifer-coated slide. The safety seems redundant with the long trigger pull (Travis Pike for TTAG) The magazine release is decent sized and easy to reach and press with the strong hand.

A manual safety on this gun is somewhat unneeded with its long trigger pull. The manual safety is frame-mounted and 1911-ish, so its easy to access. The controls are easy to reach and engage. The reset is relatively long, too, but both audible and tactile. The distance is the same as the length of pull in the double-action mode, but is a bit lighter. The trigger is comfortable, but it has the longest pull of a single action trigger I’ve found. While small, I like the contrast between the front and the rear sight, which makes sight tracking easy. I’m not going to make smiley faces in a B-27 target, but I’m going to have no issues shutting one down in their vital zones. Accuracy-wise you can land center mass shots into a target at 25 yards. It takes time to get behind them and get used to them. The metal sights are robust but feel a little on the small side. The Grip Panels are quite nice (Travis Pike for TTAG) The G3c’s grip texture never let the gun slide or glide while I was getting after it. I appreciate an excellent aggressive grip, and while shooting in Florida’s summer, my hands get sweaty. With stouter +P stuff, you’ll feel it, but the Taurus G3c is still plenty easy to handle. Recoil is comparable to most small semi-automatics, and that means it’s very controllable. Once lead meets steel, we learn what the G3c is all about. To quote Donnie Brasco, you can ‘forget about it.’ Hitting the Range I’ve been toting the G3c in a Hybrid MT2 from Crossbreed and the weapon is incredibly comfortable for daily carry. If one wanted to nitpick the G3c, they could, but this pistol is not a challenge to carry. I feel spoiled by my SIG P365, and its thinner, lighter nature. The gun is a little on the chunky side at 1.2 inches wide. This Crossbreed Hybrid MT2 is a fine holster to carry the G3c. It fits in the Vaultek Lifepod perfectly. The G3c has a 3.2-inch barrel, which makes the gun a little shorter than the G26. The G3c is a little taller due to its bigger grip, which’s fine with me (I have big hands). The difference between the two is on the back end. The Taurus G3c is a bit bigger than a GLOCK G26 but weighs practically the same. If I were swapping sights, I’d just grab a new front sight, preferably something with a high visibility insert. That’s pretty freaking handy when you consider how massive the GLOCK aftermarket is. TRUGLO has been changing some of their GLOCK sights to reflect that they are now also G3c compatible. Speaking of GLOCK, the G3c might not take GLOCK mags, but the pistol will take GLOCK sights. On top of that, the sights are made of metal, a feat that GLOCK has yet accomplished on their guns. It’s a simple setup that I’ve come to prefer over time. The front sight is a simple white dot front sight. The rear sight is all black and serrated to reduce reflection. On top to the gun, you’ll seem some very nice sights, at least for a value brand gun. I never noticed an issue with any trigger dingus, but I’ve seen this referenced enough in other forums that some apparently do. That makes it more comfortable when hitting those higher round counts in a long range session. For one, the trigger dingus is much broader. You still get a manual frame safety as well as a trigger safety.ĭespite the similarities with the G2c, a lot about the G3c has changed. The grip texture is broken up into six panels, and that texture is exceptionally aggressive. The G3c still features a Picatinny rail that accommodates the smallest of pistol lights and, better yet, training devices like the MantisX. Kinda small, kinda chunky, like me at 12 (Travis Pike for TTAG) The G3c comes with a surprising three magazines, which is a lovely touch and one I appreciate.

hey ok 3 seconds into tma rewatch and i have Thoughts:

Now, the Institute was founded in 1818, which means that the Archive contains almost 200 years of case files at this point. Combine that with the fact that most of the Institute prefers the ivory tower of pure academia to the complicated work of dealing with statements or recent experiences and you have the recipe for an impeccably organised library and an absolute mess of an archive. (MAG 1)

So this is on a Doylist level part of the justification for why the archives gang do so much practical research on the statements, but the early installment weirdness on not quite knowing how the institute functions yet, but that plus jon a bit before this stating he’s familiar with their “ongoing projects and contracts” and later in the season tim talking about the grad students implies that the institute also does a lot of like. Books and articles about the supernatural. (idk where these are being published bc it sounds like they aren’t necessarily respected enough for most academic presses or journals lol)

But we know Jon was in Research, along with tim and sasha. And later he goes up to help out with the influx of new garbage statements they get around Halloween (MAG 55). So clearly someone is gong through the new statements,although based on the description they’re mostly p lightly researched- probably calling up ppl mentioned besides the statement giver and saying “hey did this happen?” and when the friend or whoever says “no he said he was gonna go give y’all a statement for a goof” it’s marked closed.

What I would like to posit is that the institute has several functions practically:

the library probably gets a fair bit of funding, so they can get basically any relevant work published and add it to their collection.

This is where you’ll have a lot of the grad students hanging around. probably a handful of other academics from various institutions, too. In addition to the students working on paranormal stuff, I’d guess you also have a fair number from history, folklore, psychology, and a smattering of other disciplines who’re there for rlly rlly niche projects on physics or architecture. Like i’d imagine anyone in the area doing work on spiritualism ends up in the institute library eventually- if they have any primary sources like journals or manuscripts from jonah’s whole gang, for example, i’d assume they’re in the library bc the archives seem to be exclusively statements.

Honestly Im like 50% sure the institute has contracts with whatever like ghost hunting type shows exist in the uk to contribute research and have someone respectable looking come do talking head segments as needed. this goes up to 100% for the usher foundation, bc i KNOW we have hella programs like that in the states. like Finding Bigfoot has a donor plaque in the foyer of the usher foundation

Other contracts and projects are probably with a handful of other, non-entity orgs devoted to the paranormal, plus whatever the Lukases, Fairchilds, et al decide they want.

Research, I would like to propose, is supposedly all one big department, but in practical terms contains 2 factions:

The segment Jon worked with for the most part, following up on statements and artifacts. probably smaller, except when they manage to draft the rest in for like halloween and such. the regulars are probably mostly the ppl jon gets annoyed at for being credulous and thinking every statement’s legit

the rest are ppl under the institute banner who are working in the library, doing research for outside contracts, institute wide contracts, and writing whatever gets published out of the institute. probably mostly more concerned with the supernatural as like. an intellectual exercise than jon would be, instead of finding out what’s legit and what isn’t. otherwise they’re mostly more jon’s type of ppl, with the academic distance etc.

Artefact Storage is prolly a host unto itself. Sometimes research’ll get tagged to get an item’s history but like. only ppl who work there go there

The archives are also their own thing. no one goes there.

Why does this matter? I would like to posit 2 reasons.

The first is that it explains part of why the Institute isn’t v respected academically. Everywhere else would have whatever primary source stuff and unique books they have down in the archives/special collections with the statements. I don’t know a ton about library science, but I don’t think things usually end up split/mixed like they are at the institute. Plus, there is very much an area where the Institute could be a valued collection! If the archives were organized. In theory, the Archives should be a valued and respected resource for folklorists! No one in folklore studies cares if a story is true; as far as they’re concerned, the archives are full of memorates that could be really useful. Like academic texts in folklore will generally have quotes from ppl’s ghost stories (or tall tales or folk songs etc) intercut with analysis of patterns and what they mean. But they’re organized so terribly. If they were devoted to folklore instead of the supernatural, you’d expect a taxonomy of subject- our collection here at my university stuff organized by like “supernatural: religious” “supernatural: non-religious” “customs” etc. But no one would be terribly put out combing through them if they were organized by date or like. at all.

The second is that since the archives and artefact storage are pretty much self contained, most of the daily interaction between institute employees is between people in research and the library. Giving you people like Jon as a put upon minority among “ivory tower” types, from that sub population of researchers and the ppl in the library. Jon’s worked at the Institute for like 5 years, and he’s too himself for a proper rivalry, but it’s very easy to see the people like him and tim who believe that Some Things Are Supernatural and would like proof bumping heads with the rest. Giving him a general dislike for people from the library. AND! an extra reason he takes an extra dislike to martin instead of going “o thank goodness, libraries are way more like archives than research what do we do?” :)

To elaborate, let me start from the other end of the equation: Rhodes Island has a lot of bona fide freaks of nature on its payroll. To name a few:

If we get into mutations and experimentation (which, to be fair, Lappland also counts as, but only on the Arts end of things, her insane adaptability and instinct in combat is all hers, and Angelina might count as well, but it’s still a unique enough power that it can be attributed to her), then you also have the likes of Manticore and Ifrit to account for.

So, with this in mind, I want to emphasize exactly how impressive it is to just get by with discipline and regular training taken to the extreme in Rhodes Island. No superpower lottery, no mutation, just good ol’ elbow grease and a daily routine of squats, push-ups, and watching a lot of combat records:

Gravel - As mentioned before, all she’s got is a chest plate, two short swords, and no doubt a ton of calluses from all those deflections and parries she must perform to keep enemies at bay until she’s given the order to pull back. No Arts or special unique abilities, just abs of titanium and the ability to teleport behind you and smooch you.

Schwarz - Her superpower is “being REALLY good with a crossbow”, and goodness gracious, it works. She even lampshades this with some of her quotes: “Rhodes Island is teeming with monsters. I can only hope to learn to battle like them”. She says this one when being shown a combat record, which makes it all the more amusing because it’s probably a video of the aforementioned freaks of nature, maybe it’s Angelina throwing a whole truck at someone, or even worse, throwing Specter like a serrated cannonball at someone full force, or even even worse, Lappland eating a Kit Kat wrong like the maniac she is.

Hellagur - While he is Infected, he doesn’t use Arts and instead gets by through the most reliable thing we of two opposable thumbs have ever given birth to: Big Freaking Steel. When you have a nodachi almost as long as you are tall (and Hellagur is 193 cm tall) and you have more years of combat experience than most people in your profession have been alive for, then yeah, turns out, you don’t need fancy mutations or magic powers to absolutely body hordes of suckers like this is Dynasty Warriors.

Skyfire - You might be wondering, “hold up, doesn’t she straight up call meteors? Isn’t she a notorious Arts user?” and you are correct, except, she’s completely clean of Oripathy. Her mastery over Arts comes not from mutation like it does for the vast majority of powerful Arts users, it comes from diligent studying. Skyfire is a scholar, she has dedicated her life to the research of the science of Arts, and while her natural talent is one thing and we can’t undermine it, it’s her single-minded dedication to mastering it and uncovering all of its secrets that allowed her to drop meteors on people. What I’m trying to say is that, unlike in our world, Academia in Terra rocks.

Magallan - Now, I’m... Not sure where to put Sweet Mags. She could go here or in freaks of nature, but for now, I’m putting her here. Magallan’s superpower is “being a sweet little optimistic scientist who happens to be able to control flying missile launchers”. Her ‘powers’ are a direct result of her research, the Soaring Dragon drones. Now, drone users are not anything out of this world, Reunion has a trillion of them. Unlike Reunion drone users, however, Magallan takes to the battlefield herself and fights alongside her drones instead of controlling them from out of the map. She’s able to use her Arts lightbulb (which is a freaking awesome concept, by the way) while also controlling up to three drones that have their own Arts-dependent armaments. This means she’s not only controlling her own Arts focusing and output, she’s doing it for three others at the same time. Whether it be the mining laser of her S2 or the missile barrage of her S3, these require careful, skilled Arts control. Keep in mind that Magallan is not Infected, either, so no mutation Arts power-up. I like to attribute Mags being able to do this to her own diligence and skill, but honestly, you could just as easily classify her as a freak of nature because that’s some living supercomputer stuff she’s pulling off.

These are not the only “normals” in Rhodes Island but they are certainly my favorite ones. In a mobile clown tent full of freaks, these absolute bulldozers are just really good at what they do.
