Modern Character in Thedas!! Fic Rec

I actually love that there’s a part of the Dragon Age Fandom where basically self-inserts have such good fics. I’ll admit that a lot of what I read in this tag is self-indulgent (but that’s really what fanfiction is for) and I thought I might catalog some of my fav fics so far.

I think also what’s great about this tag is that it actually exists! I try to occasionally find similar concepts in other fandoms but this kind of tag doesn’t seem to translate into many other fandoms, or at least the fics that do exist aren’t exactly to my taste. So hopefully this is helpful to everyone like me!

Trope: Modern Girl In Thedas

As stated in a prior rec post, I kind of have a love-hate relationship with Modern Girl in Thedas (MGiT) fics. On some days I want to read something that is pure wish fulfillment and can read fics where it’s obvious they didn’t have a beta but you don’t mind because the author clearly had so much fun writing it. On other days, however, I want to read a fic which really explores the repercussions of an MGiT premise.

The Reluctant Alchemist's Guide to Thedas (Vol. 1) by paraparadigm. Solas/MGiT.

Ngl I let out a cry of delight when I saw that paraparadigm, author of one of my all-time favorite fics, had written something for Dragon Age. Solas x OC with a very unique take on the Inquisitor. This epic 243,211 word amalgation of lore, magic and characters is part one of a series, but stands alone pretty well.

Keep to the Stars by MaryDragon. Cullen/MGiT, secondary Inquisitor/Josephine.

Gorgeous art. I remember it as the fic where the MGiT lost her husband, who knew she had a crush on a video game character. YMMV about whether the characters are OOC but as wish fulfillment, it works darn well.

Ad Infinitum by stormontheocean. Cullen/MGiT.

Otherwise known as the dragon taming fic because why not? The Chargers are pretty prominent in this fic, which I liked.

I’m going to feature another one from this author later this month but lets start here. I have a soft spot for writers that take a side character and make them into a fully leaving breathing main character. Sarenka did that here with Delrin Barris. Mira is a MGIT but unlike with other fics, she doesn’t possess any knowledge of the games, she isn’t arriving with a bunch of skills, she’s not suddenly a mage. What she is, is someone that needs protection, and the best way the Inquisition can provide her that is to be married. 

There’s so so much sweetness between these two as they try to work through an arranged marriage. Getting to know someone AFTER you’re committed to spend the rest of your life together is different. They fall in love through letters, and the care they have, just --- ugh just read this otherwise I’m going to gush all over everyone and you’ll run away.  Trust me, after this you’re going to be just as much in love with Barris as I am.

hello! i was wondering if you had any cullen or josie romance fic recs? im looking for some good fluff (also some modern girl in thedas if you know fo any) i'm reading one right now (From the Beyond by Auriana Valoria) and I'm really enjoying it, but i trust that you know some other really good ones :) (also, have you written any before, bc i feel like you'd be really good at it!

I’ve written some, mostly ficlets/one-shots here. I have an Ao3 as well! 

My favorite at the moment is this modern Cullavellan by @cullywullycake! @a-shakespearean-in-paris also writes amazing stuff, smut and fluff alike so check out her blog :)

Those are all Cullen-romance centric though, I haven’t come across any Josie x Quizzie stuff yet, but I’ve been trying to write some myself haha. So any recommendations from anyone would be good. 

I don’t know any MGIT fics myself, it’s not something I’m super into so if an yone here knows any good ones feel free to recommend!

So I kind of have a love-hate relationship with Modern Girl in Thedas fics. On some days I want to read something that is pure wish fulfillment and can read fics where it's obvious they didn't have a beta but you don't mind because the author clearly had so much fun writing it. On other days, however, I want to read a fic which really explores the repercussions of an MGiT premise-- all the better if the character interacts with one of the well-known love interests in DAI, Cullen and Solas.

As both a Cullen/Inquisitor and Solas/Inquisitor fic, it is unflinching in its treatment of the two men-- I did not get the impression that it favored one pairing over the other. The MGiT is relatable with her own personality quirks and agency; I really felt Errol Kerr's loss and displacement in this strange world throughout the fic. The worldbuilding is enthralling, and I eagerly await the next installment. Summary: The Borealis hold power, remnants of a time long ago when Earth had its own magic. On the day that they flared across Seattle Errol Kerr stepped into the light… and fell through the Fade into Thedas. Branded murderer, mage, and finally Herald, Errol soon discovers that none of these labels are true, and her secrets could lead to the Inquisition’s downfall. Everything is further complicated by the men in her life: Cullen, who seeks to stabilize her and keep her power at bay, and Solas, who sees her potential and wishes to unleash it, but at a terrible price. Misplaced trust can be deadly, and good intentions might not be enough to guarantee a happy ending. Corypheus was only the beginning.
