The reason I’m so hard on Moonscars is how much potential it has.  It creates a beautiful world, with an interesting primary story.  It has a great game system.
And this is why the flaws stick out more.
The game uses the same resource for magic and healing.  This seems like an attempt to GIT GUD, but forgets that this locks the magic system out of the game.  Because of this you can’t depend on your magic, which means the game boss fights don’t need magic.  And, then you have to ask, why do you even have the magic system?  Well, because the magic system is one of the only things in the game that has permanent progression.  And the game locks it out.
For those that say “GID GUD”, we’re not talking about how hard the game is, but how fun it is.  As I have been able to make roughly steady progress.  This is about fun.  The game is NOT fair, but close, and that close is one of the things what prevents it from reaching greatness.  You can walk through enemies, which is pretty common nowadays.  Your attack walks you forward.  Again, pretty standard.  You can parry with a small parry window.  Again, pretty standard.
But, your attacks can actually walk you just passed an enemy, to the point you can’t parry them.  And parries are essential for fighting some enemies, at least if you want to come out unscathed.  Despite the long sweep of the swords that you siung from behind you, your hitbox is only forward.  Meaning you can also walk yourself passed your ability to hit your enemies.  You can’t turn around short enough to hit them, meaning you have to dodge out of the area and then turn around, and for some enemies, you cannot do this without getting hit.
The first true boss has a knife throw spread, but the space between them matches your dodge.  So, you dodge from one knife and get hit by the next.  And you can’t control dodge distance.  You can’t double jump either.
These are things that the game could have ironed out if they want a proper tough-but-fair game.  Because it’s not fair, you need to heal, and healing requires you to use the same resource you use for magic.
They also build a world, and then keep adding things to the world.
The primary story involves the Sculptor that created seemingly living beings made from clay, along with small amounts of bone dust and ichor.  Among his creations are the Pristines, the greatest of his creations.  Most of his other creations have been corrupted.  And you go about destroying them.  The rest of the mechanics are then fostered on in really obtuse ways.
In contrast to Dark Souls, they explain the Dark Sign in the introduction, and provide a consist framework to build upon.  This is why the Story Breadcrumbs works, as it has a basis that is consistently built upon.  That’s why you can have story built from item descriptions, and offhand comments.
Moonscars is a situation where Less is More.  It could have been about the Prestines clinging to their failing Humanity.  But, it’s called Moonscars, and Moon Hunger, and Moon Moon.  And not the slightest reason why the moon is the focus.  Not the slightest reason why the sun is never spoken of.
Bone dust is your primary pick up, which you use to purchase spells and items. You get Ichor GLANDS, because?.. they wanted another drop?  But, you also regenerate Ichor from attacks.  This is what you use for spells and healing.  Not from defeating enemies?
When you strip all of the obiter, you do have a truly wonderful game beneath it.

Is your Terror Time series based on the 4 OG Direct-to-VHS Scooby movies (Zombie Island, Witch's Ghost, Alien Invaders & Cyber Chase)?
I noticed in The Beauregard Game, it takes place on an island off of Louisiana just like Moonscar Island in Zombie Island! And Book of the Dead takes a lot from Witch's Ghost (Ben & Sarah Ravencroft, the Book of the Dead).
Is the next story going to be based on Alien Invaders!?
Ooh what an interesting theory that I will neither confirm nor deny 😂 😉
Here’s what I will say: the Scooby movies I watched the most growing up were “Zombie Island,” “Witch’s Ghost,” “Cyber Chase,” and the live-action films. Do with that information what you will!
Thanks for asking questions! I always enjoy answering them 😊

11/17/23: Some Switch pre-black Friday Best Buy promos! This morning, I took a peek at their online deals. There, I purchased Mario+Rabbids Sparks of Hope Cosmic Edition and Crash Bandicoot 4. They were $15 and $20 each. After work, I went to pick them up in store. Obviously, I had to browse their games. There I got, Moonscars and Elderand at $20 each and Omori at $25. There's some more deals too, on other popular games, but these sub $25 games are still decent. Good luck on your own personal hunt for deals.

STEAM NEXT FEST DEMO THOUGHTS
>Last Command Nier Automata x Undertale (and that snake game you used to play on old phones). I like how little messages appear during battles that show you what the enemy's thinking. OST is also a banger, really looking forward to this one
>Melatonin Rhythm game where you have to rely on mostly environmental queues to keep in time with the beat. Has a really good tutorial and once you get a feel of it you feel like god
>Super Bullet Break This is what I imagine gacha games are like sans the predatory practices. Pretty fun card battler, gives me PSP/Vita era JRPG vibes
>Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara Cute platformer that plays like SM3DLand. Has fun movement but it's pretty simple. I like it though
>Cult of the Lamb Cute/dark roguelite. Not much to say about this one but I enjoyed it
>Pocket Wheels Anyone remember Toy Commmander? Seems a bit Unity™ but this could be something interesting if it's tightened up more
>Nine Sols 2D Sekiro from the guys who made Detention and Devotion - art's really nice and it looks like it's gonna have an interesting story
>Moonscars Wants to be Blasphemous so bad, nothing you haven't seen before if you're familiar with the genre
>Harmony's Odyssey Cute game where you help a witch do various tasks by doing simple mini games like spot-the-difference, switch puzzles, and the like
>Fashion Police Squad Been waiting for a retro fps to do something new! Highly recommend
>Turbo Golf Racing What if Rocket League was golf? Feels a bit floaty and performance is sketchy but I had a good time
>Railbound / The Last Worker / GOODBYE WORLD Not much to say about these but they're fun/interesting
>SIGNALIS Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill fans will like this
>The Cub Thought I recognized this. Turns out I played the prequel which was golf game. This one's a cinematic platformer though, good stuff so far. Reminds me a lot of Oddworld (the MC even sounds like Abe)
>CULTIC Another boomer shooter, this one's based mostly on Blood. Very solid
>Toilet Chronicles Imagine if Stanley Parable took place in one room?
>Ghostsong Another soulsvania, though this one leans more into Metroid than the rest. This gets a pass because I remember seeing this far before this subgenre was oversaturated
>Spirittea Stardew Valley but you're running a bathhouse for spirits. Really liked the little details on this one and the writing's good. Can't wait for the full game
>Master Key Kinda like a very scaled back and monochrome Tunic. Got my eyes on this.

Giving Up on Moonscars
Because it just insists on doing everything it can to piss you off.
Dark Mirrors (bonfires) that you can’t use until you find milk for the cat.
None of your ranged attacks work in the air.  Flyers will often have magic attacks that orbit around them before being launched at you, which makes melee extremely dangerous against them.  You can’t double jump, either, and they will often float just out of reach.
There is one magic attack that works against flyers, but it doesn’t target flyers first, so if you use it and there are landed enemies, they will often be targeted before the flyers.  Even in the best case scenario, you are only going to get two shots.  In order to charge your Ichor, (healing/magic), you need to land attacks, and if a flyer is consistently out of reach, (or too dangerous to melee), you cannot recharge your magic.
Because magic is so useless, they want to force you into using it, by making enemies that cannot be damaged until hit with a spell.  This works fine when one-on-one, assuming you have enough Ichor to use a spell.  Otherwise you have to fight them until you build up enough Ichor to cast the spell that allows you to actually damage them.  And then a scrub walks just in front of your magic attack, forcing you to do it again.
There is one magic spell I actually found useful, one that creates a doppelgänger, but if you need to use your magic attacks to do any damage to an enemy, this too becomes useless.
And the straw that broke the camel’s back is a flyer that needs to be hit by a spell to damage.  Reminder that you cannot use any ranged attacks in the air.  There is only one spell that can hit the target, and it takes a LOT of Ichor to use.
There are barriers that can only be damaged by magic, but it’s possible to not have any magic equipped that would qualify, so you have to shuffle your spells to get passed the barrier, and then shuffle them back again.
When fighting, you will often have enemies that you have to parry to realistically beat them, and the game has no qualms about having you fight them with enemies with unblockable attacks.
