carpet cleaning

I continued to use the carpet cleaner wet vacuum, I already went over all the carpet that isn't new one time and let it dry. There were pets in the past and it helps make the entire house seem more clean.

I also remembered a show I watched a couple years ago on Hulu or some streaming service, I think it was called Tell Me Lies. It is about a college student. The clothes they wore on the show reminded me of another time and place. The girl who died in a car accident posed for a photo on a bed in her underwear. Could that have been you? It is about the so sheltered and danger at the same time.

There are is a video of Saturday morning cartoon television commercials on right now. Some of the commercials seem familiar, but the original air date is a little earlier than I was born. However, when I was a kid, videos were physical VHS tapes, and some people used a VCR to record live shows onto a VHS tape in real time, then the VHS tapes like that got passed around. Maybe when I was a child, I saw some commercials from television from years before or other places when I watched a VHS tape like a Saturday morning cartoons. When I thought about this and recording movies onto VHS at the time, a cereal commercial with a cartoon pirate caught my attention on the youtube video on now.

Next, I watched a tour of the Alabama Gulf Shores on a YouTube channel that has many tours of amusement parks, carnivals, and tourist places. Their video showed more attractions than the Alabama Gulf Shores weekend vacation vlog I watched.I cant be sure if they changed anything since the last Alabama Gulf Shores video I watched, but there are other coastal tourist areas that I've watched videos of and they seem like depressed places from a bygone era, then later theres another video where the place looks great. Why would they have so many mini golf places in Alabama Gulf Shores? Maybe that's a popular job during tourist season. The vlogger who went on vacation there graduated from the University of Alabama and then moved to New York City to be a youtuber, and that's what her channel is about, but some current student youtubers from University of Alabama were also in recommended videos for me. I find similar products like their lifestyle when I go shopping online. I have viewed the vlogger's online shopping links and their own merchandise, I understand that could be cool for someone posting social media to also set up an online store with what they wore. There are different ways to get involved with online clothing buying and resale that are beyond the scope of this blog post. I am not in college anymore and not interested in participating in youth culture or social media, but other people are doing that stuff in Alabama.

I saw a video with some type of animal professional saying that ferrets do better on a diet of only raw meat than anything else. What I look up seems uncertain. Should ferrets have raw meat?

Ah, now there is a subject of debate. Let me start out by saying that there is no universally agreed upon diet for ferrets, and no full diet trials to say which diet is "best". We do have some research and data collection, but there's definitely still disagreement.

Let's look at what a ferret needs. Ferrets are obligate carnivores (meaning they need animal protein) with a very simple and short GI tract. Their small intestines are about 5x the length of their body...compared to 8-10x in a cat! It's basically a simple tube from stomach to rectum.

They have high protein and moderate fat requirements, and actually don't tolerate carbohydrate levels as high as a cat (another domesticated obligate carnivore) can. Ferrets don't do well with cereal grains, and pea proteins have been linked to bladder stone formation. Even their dentition (which is super impressive for such a tiny animal) screams "predator" and is designed for shearing, not grinding.

High carb diets are also thought to contribute to the development of insulinomas, one of the most common diseases ferrets get. However, abnormal pancreatic tissue (where these tumors occur) has been found in ferrets as young as 2 weeks, so it is not likely a solely nutritional influence. Anecdotally, I have also discussed this with boarded small mammal vets and exotics vets in other countries, where raw diets are more common. None of them have felt that they've seen a significant difference in the incidence of insulinomas in raw fed vs commercially fed ferrets. But that is all anecdotal; we don't have any studies on that, unfortunately.

The best overview and discussion on ferret nutrition that I've found has been Johnson-Delaney, C. A. (2014). Ferret nutrition. Vet Clin North Am Exot Anim Pract, 17(3), 449-70. (If you want to read the full summary I did a post on it here) and here are the most important tidbits:

1. A raw diet may be the most biologically appropriate...but hold on to that for now.

2. Ferrets eat many small meals throughout the day and cache their food.

3. There are no reports of nutritional deficiencies in ferrets on an appropriate ferret or high quality cat diet, unless they were overfed supplements that unbalanced the diet.

4. We know that cats can tolerate carbohydrates up to 40% in their diets, and ferrets have an even shorter GI tract than them (meaning we think the number is lower but probably don't know exactly where the cut off is).

5. A ferret's physical condition will suffer if their dietary protein is <30%.

6. 15-30% fat is sufficient but up to 40% has shown to be tolerated well.

7. Cereal grains are not digestible and fruits/veggies have minimal nutritional value.

8. Kibble may reduce dental tartar, but it also may cause abnormal wear on the teeth.

So with all that in mind, some vets do recommend a raw diet. Even Oxbow, a trusted small mammal nutrition company, recommends raw diets for ferrets...

...but it's not that simple.

Here's where the problems come in:

1. Raw diets pose a health risk to immunocompromised humans or animals.

2. Nutrient deficiencies are seen only with home prepared diets, not commercial diets (unless excess supplementation occurs).

2b. Vitamin overdoses have also only been seen with home prepared diets.

3. A ferret's tendency to eat small meals and cache their food often makes feeding raw meat impractical at best, and a dangerous health risk at worse.

4. There is no studied or agreed upon protocol for balancing a home prepared ferret diet, meaning a lot of it is guess work.

5. Ferrets are not polecats in the same way that dogs are not wolves. They have been domesticated for thousands of years, and particularly in the US, bred and raised primarily on poor quality diets (Marshal Farms). So feeding a ferret like a polecat doesn't make any more sense than feeding a dog like a wolf...and we really don't know the impact of Marshal's inbreeding and mass production, at least in terms of changes in the GI tract.

So it comes down to raw is probably more biologically appropriate, but carries a lot of risks if you do it wrong. And on top of that, we don't have great data on how to do it right. I don't fault my colleagues for recommending raw diets for ferrets (at least compared to cats or dogs...), but I'm not personally at a point where I think it is preferable. We need diet trials and more regulation of who is formulating these diets, but I don't think the answer is to have every ferret owner in the country start tossing frozen/thawed c*hicks or r*odents into their ferret's cage. A lot of commercial ferret foods are garbage, but we have 0 actual evidence that a raw food diet is any better. Actually, we have 0 evidence of that in any species.

But as a ferret owner, I get it. I consulted with a veterinary nutritionist, multiple boarded small mammal vets, and multiple general exotics vets to decide what food to feed my ferrets. And here's what I found out: no one agrees. I got different answers from pretty much all of them. There is a frustrating lack of evidence-based information on ferret diets. So take all that information as you will, but I would strongly disagree that we have any actual evidence to say that ferrets "do better" on a raw diet as compared to a commercial kibble.

Work of Art [J.JH] - thirty-six | have you had breakfast today

“What the fuck?” You asked as Anna jogged over to you, covered in what sort of looked like gauze wrapping but with a leather miniskirt and punk vest. Her hair was sprayed up and she had two extensions of white on each side. Taeyong walked up behind her, ripped up pants, fake bolts in his neck and stitches drawn all over his skin, also wearing a punk vest.

“Like it?” Anna modeled her costume.

“Bride of Frankenstein, but make it fashion,” you responded, snapping your fingers. “I love it, I’m a little jealous.”

“Are you... “ Anna looked at you for a moment; you were wearing a white lab coat, a white old man wig, and had an RC car controller in your hands. “A… a mad scientist?”

“Hold on, once Jaehyun gets here, you’ll get it.” You waited for Jaehyun for a few minutes before he texted you and you told him where you were waiting. “Okay, there he is, ready?”

He looked pretty normal, blue jeans and a plaid shirt, except for the red puffy vest he had on. You stood next to him, held up the RC car controller in your hands and he realized what you were doing, lifted his sunglasses up and looked at his watch with a shocked face.

“Ohhhhhhhh,” Anna said and clapped her hands together. “You’re Doc Brown and Marty McFly!”

“Yeah!” You said, jumping out of your pose.

“Do you guys like it?” Jaehyun smiled and asked.

“Is that why you made me watch the movie last week?” Taeyong asked, raising an eyebrow at Jaehyun.

“I couldn’t let my own roommate not know what my costume was.” He smiled.

Taeyong nodded.

“Oh Marty, you’re so McFly!” A voice said and you all turned.

Johnny walked over, wearing a Tony the Tiger costume and posed quickly with a box of Frosted Flakes; with a picture of his face cut out and glued over Tony’s.

“That joke was not grrrrrrreat!” You balled up your fist and did the motion Tony the Tiger did in the commercials.

Johnny also did the motion and then looked sad.

“Is he ‘pretty McFly for a Korean guy?’” Anna asked.

You held your hand up for her to high five and she did.

“She gets a high five and I don’t?” Johnny asked, pretending to be offended.

“She was funny.”

Johnny stood for a moment, mouth open in mock surprise.

You folded your arms and nodded, and then unfolded them. “Shouldn’t you be getting ready to DJ?”

“First you don’t like my joke and now you want to get rid of me?” Johnny pretended to cry and dabbed his tears with the box of cereal before draping himself over Jaehyun’s shoulder. Jaehyun pretended to console him and patted his back, laughing. Johnny looked up at you for a moment before pretending to cry again.

“Shouldn’t I be the one crying?” Jungwoo asked as he and Eunji walked over in their costumes, Eunji with a very skeptical look on her face as she watched Johnny.

“Wowwwww,” you said, ignoring Johnny, who stopped being dramatic. “You really are the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen.”

Jungwoo posed cutely for a second before standing how he normally did.

“You’re not the only artist, y/n,” Eunji said proudly.

“I see I’m not: Jack.”

“Rose!” Eunji yelled out, facing away from Jungwoo. “Where are you?!”

Jungwoo looked back and forth, pretending he couldn’t see her. “Jack! Jack! ...JackJackie!”

You all laughed.

“To answer your question, my set is third on the list, y/n.” Johnny finally answered.

“Is that in order of like, worst to best?”

“Well, the person who goes last is usually the main draw.”

“Are you last?”

“Last time I was second in the list but now I’m…” Johnny smiled and waggled his eyebrows. “Second to last.”

“Oh shit!”

Johnny nodded smugly.

“Oh shit, dude, he’s penultimate!”

Jungwoo hit the woah in celebration. Eunji and Anna laughed.

“You really are moving up in the DJing world. Or is that-- down?” Jaehyun asked.

Johnny laughed.

The first DJ stood in the booth and started his set, and you all danced. Jungwoo broke out the Tom and Jerry dance, which looked strange because it contrasted the dress so much. Anna coaxed Taeyong into raising his hands with her, like they were Boris Karloff, and walking around stiffly to the beat. You pretended to control an imaginary Delorean with the RC controller and Jaehyun laughed at you and then kept picking up his glasses and looking at his watch with the beat. Johnny pretended to be controlled by the controller and asked all of you, and people none of you knew, if they had their breakfast that morning.

The second DJ came on and you all kept dancing, Jungwoo doing body rolls in his dress and making Eunji laugh. Anna started twerking on Taeyong which made him push her away bashfully, and when she looked up, offended, Johnny started twerking on her and she laughed and pushed him away. You pretended the antenna of the controller was a fishing pole and started reeling everyone in, when it was Jaehyun’s turn, he did his best fish impression. As he hopped over to you, he bumped into a costumed girl, apologized, and kept hopping.

Johnny left so he could go DJ and you all danced harder at his set. You thought you saw the girl Jaehyun had bumped into looking up at Johnny for a few moments before going back to dancing. Jungwoo started doing some kind of bird impression that Anna joined in on, and you and Eunji laughed at them. Of course, Johnny played Thriller, and Taeyong, Eunji, and Jaehyun started dancing to it and trying to show the rest of you the moves.

“Woo!!” Jungwoo hollered as he danced on his toes.

“Shamonnn!!” You yelled.

“Ow!” Anna joined.

When Johnny was done he came back to dance, and you saw him talk to the costumed girl for a few seconds before he came back over to the group.

“What’d you think?”

“You should be last,” you said.

Johnny pretended to tear up. “Really?”

“Or get an Oscar,” Jaehyun added.

You pointed at him and nodded.

“You guys!” Johnny pulled all of you into a hug, pretending to cry. “Have you had breakfast today?”

“Oh god!!!” You yelled and tried to push him away.

Jaehyun laughed at both of you.

WANDAVISION EPISODE SEVEN THOUGHTS

SPOILERS AHEAD YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!

BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL MORE LIKE BREAKING MY BRAIN AND HEART

wanda’s mood | as she talks to the camera, she treats her expanding the false world she’s created to having a bad night out. we’re seeing how tired she is from expanding westview - it damn near drained her it seems. the last episode was a lot to take in, keeping up with her torn emotions with pietro, her relationship with vision crumbling, worrying about her kids, expanding the hex — it’s enough to fry out your nerves. wanda also categorizes what happened in the last episode as reckless and decides to stay in to punish herself. even her kids notice that she’s out of it because she doesn’t stop them from fighting and doesn’t say a word as she heads to the kitchen. she’s drained, she’s tired - she doesn’t want to deal with anything today. wanda’s not being the doting mom she’s been since the birth of the twins as when billy talks about his head being too noisy, she ignores his complaints and lounges in bed a little longer. she’s drained and is acting out of character throughout the whole episode.

wanda’s reality is starting to break | right off the bat, we see how the reality in westview is going haywire. the boys mention their game freaking out. it switches to games from different eras. then we see it with wanda’s milk - switching from black and white to color and even changing shape to fit the style of a past era like 50s with the milk being in glass bottle or a milk carton with the ‘missing’ label on the side. we’ve seen the trailer/promo footage of different objects/furniture in the house glitching in this same manner and it seems that wanda’s power is not strong enough to keep everything together - physically or mentally so it seems in this episode.

“thanks for tuning in to W.N.D.A.” | as wanda is in the kitchen making herself some cereal, you can hear the tv from the living room say this. this sets up the opening credits for the show as everything is about wanda. if you turn on the subtitles, you can read exactly what the anchor is saying on the television. he says “not a thing weighing heavily on your conscience. i hope your little ghosts arrived home safe last night. it’s always such a treat to see those creepy kiddos out and about once a year.” it seems as though it’s wanda’s mind we’re hearing. nothing’s weighing heavily on her conscience - kinda is with expanding the hex. the little ghosts is in reference to all the kids that we finally saw come out for halloween in westview. calling them creepy kiddos could mean nothing but i thought about tommy and billy? since the two gained their abilities on halloween and weren’t doing much to conceal their powers (at least tommy wasn’t). i also say it’s wanda’s mind we’re gaining insight to cause when it goes on to the bit about giving tips about resisting temptation of the leftover candy or just eating it all - wanda is skeptical of what’s happening with the milk but still takes a big spoonful of cereal.

opening credits | we don’t have some super catchy lyrics this time around for the opening credits of the show - making me think that this is a nod to the office. but we do get ‘wanda’ splattered in every frame of the credits. the one that stands out to me is the ‘i know what u are doing wanda’ since everything else it seems to be replacing random words on signs like restaurants and other shops. comes off as a tad bit scary/creepy since it’s written with cut out letters from different new articles/magazines. could be a hint to vision knowing that it is all wanda’s doing. or as we later find out, it can be a set up to agnes’ reveal since she plays a more sinister role in all of this. this is the first we’re seeing any sort of credits in the opening sequence. created by wanda maximoff - again driving home the fact that the hex and everything we’ve seen so far has all been wanda’s creation or so we’re forced to believe...

SWORD retreat | we learn that the broadcast has been taken down - all they get is dead air supposedly. maybe that’s just a result of wanda’s expansion of the hex but i think it’s too weak given how har out they are and since they are farther from wanda as she doesn’t live right at the edge of town. we also learn that haydick hayward is planning to launch a missile or some kind of powerful weapon on/in to the hex to stop wanda. let’s hope it fails or if it goes through, wanda can point the missile/weapon back at SWORD and let it go.

“if he doesn’t wanna be here, there’s nothing i can do about it.” | wanda’s comment about vision not being home and response to billy asking if they should go looking for him. this clearly speaks to wanda not having any control over vision anymore. this is the first time we’ve seen the couple apart for the entirety of the episode. he’s gained enough sentience within the hex to not be controlled by wanda as other residents are. she knows she can’t rewrite or edit the scene for him to suddenly come through the door and have everyone be a happy family.

“he is not your uncle.” | wanda confirms to us that the pietro we’ve seen so far is a stranger and not some multiverse version of her dead brother. this to me also shoots down the theory of the multiverse existing at this point and wanda being responsible for it even though evan peters does play pietro in the x-men universe. i think it was a wink to fans about marvel gaining rights to the x-men franchise. i could be wrong but until then, ‘uncle p’ is sus to me.

“i don’t have all the answers” | wanda going on about how despite being their mother, she doesn’t have all the answers. this is the third time wanda’s been asked about the truth and she doesn’t have an answer. first with vision when he asks how all this happened. second with ‘pietro’ also asking how she created westview. now, it’s the twins seeking answers about their not-uncle if she’s claiming he’s an imposter and a liar. if anything, wanda has been consistent in this claim of not knowing anything. she knows she created westview but she doesn’t know how it got to be this way. i still believe she was offered something or was taken advantage of from the get go by someone else to get to her and observe how powerful she is. i personally love the twins’ reaction to her speaking on not having all the answers. hello yes i love them.

hayward’s interest in vision | we learn that project cataract is/was hayward’s plan to bring vision back to life. this man was trying to make vision into a weapon for SWORD and that’s why he’s so focused on vision inside the hex. wanda somehow brought him back to life despite hayward’s various attempts. i hate this man and i’m sorry but i hope monica and/or wanda beat the shit out of him. obviously, hayward was using SWORD’s resources to try and bring vision back to life but it’s a question of whether or not other people within SWORD knew this was happening and what the intentions were. because we also have monica’s contact be another agent working in SWORD. so why do i get the feeling that we’re gonna be dealing with a SHIELD 2.0 in which bad guys operate within the agency and it’s going to eventually fall like 2014?

“do you think maybe this is what you deserve?” | the interviewer asking wanda this question after we see her house starting to glitch like there’s no tomorrow. while later we do find out agnes is behind the mic, it made me think that this was mephisto finally coming out a bit since the question is very pointed at wanda. the interviewer wants to see wanda suffer because why would anyone ask such a thing let alone say that? they’re taking joy in wanda losing touch with her reality. this is the lowest we’ve seen wanda throughout the series. she’s usually put together - has a slight moment of crisis - but gets back on her feet for tomorrow to enjoy her life with her family. slowly it’s been building up to this point in which wanda just...crashes. she’s lost control in this reality so for the interviewer to pose that question, it’s a signal that someone else is in charge and going to come for wanda at her weakest.

the nexus commercial | this commercial is definitely referencing wanda during infinity war/endgame. the world goes on without you? could be talking about how the world keeps spinning after wanda lost the only family she had left or how everyone moved on in endgame despite losing the person she wanted to spend her life with. wanting to be left alone? all wanda wanted was to be with vision and now to be left alone as she lives out her life with vision in westview. i know the word nexus itself has a double meaning in marvel. nexus was first name dropped in aou, with it being the center of the internet located in oslo. in the comics, i know wanda is referred to as a nexus being in which this could definitely set up the multiverse as the commercial does state that the medication ‘anchors you back to your reality. or the reality of your choice.’ i’m guessing this is on purpose since we’re conditioned to see everything marvel puts out or puts emphasis on to have a double meaning. maybe wanda discovering that she is a nexus being in multiverse of madness could be what the side effects are talking about. if she’s confirmed to be this being, she’d feel a lot of feelings, confront her truth (maybe her role in westview and hopefully her trauma), seizing her destiny (taking control of her life and bigger role in the world), and possibly more depression (i don’t think she needs more of it but with her, it’s almost inevitable especially given where these next two weeks might be heading). given that it does hold two meanings for marvel, it could explain the scenes we’ve seen in promo footage of her time in sokovia with the mind stone. we were told that the show would explore more of wanda’s past from aou so maybe it is going to give nexus a double meaning in the mcu: the largest internet hub and wanda’s confirmation as a nexus being.

the twins with agnes | this scene had me anxious. billy commenting about it being quiet heavily hinted at how agnes isn’t like anyone else in westview. again, we’ve never seen her husband ralph and we still don’t see him in this episode. we get another glimpse of señor scratchy with billy holding him but that’s about it. the house is also a big contrast to wanda’s house and westview’s scenery overall. there’s usually a lot of light and warmth in westview but agnes’ interior is toned down and has darker tones throughout our time in it. clearly, a set up for the big reveal that everyone’s been echoing since the show started. this is also the last time we see the twins in the episode.

monica | after the SWORD rover failed to get through, monica goes right in and clearly her passing through a third time has a permanent effect. she’s finally got her powers and is more badass than before. i loved how we got bits and pieces from her, maria, carol and fury in captain marvel. monica has been one of the best characters in this series and i can’t wait to see what happens next with her.

it’s all about vision | monica’s explanation to wanda about hayward. i said this before about the end credits in the show always zooming in on vision’s eye to segway into the crystal sequence. we’ve learned that hayward was trying to bring vision back and somehow wanda managed to do this once she took his body. i wouldn’t be surprised if by the end of the season we see vision being the key to saving everyone in westview since hayward just wants what he believes is his and is willing to blow up a whole town to get it or cover his tracks. while this whole series has been focusing on wanda, this all boils down to vision.

agatha all along | of course the big reveal is agnes being agatha harkness and the mastermind behind a lot of the weird occurrences in westview. what is interesting is that she’s choosing to reveal herself to wanda in this way. it doesn’t seem like it was her plan to do it at the time she did but seeing that monica could’ve swayed wanda to go off script in agatha’s plans, better sooner than later. i think señor scratchy is none other than mephisto and maybe in the next episode we’ll see the other big bad reveal himself to wanda and us. when’s that bop dropping on spotify

snooper’s gonna snoop | finally, we get a post credits scene with uncle p and monica. we’ve learned that agatha was behind the ‘recasting’ of pietro but who is he?! he could be a multiverse!quicksilver we’ve never seen before - which could explain his skewed memories with wanda. right when the camera comes to view with monica, it cuts to the credits. i believe that maybe this pietro shapeshifts into who he really is - who this might be? i don’t think mephisto but possibly agatha’s son nicholas scratch since he seems to be an accomplice of hers?

ugh god so much to unpack and we have another two episodes before shit really hits the fan.

Marvel’s WandaVision Episode 3: MCU Easter Eggs and Reference Guide

This article contains WANDAVISION Episode 3 spoilers, and potential spoilers for future episodes, the wider MCU, and Marvel Comics. We have a spoiler free review here.

WandaVision episode 3 is the first full color episode of the series, and moves the setting from the black-and-white 1960s of the previous episodes to a vibrant Brady Bunch-esque Technicolor of the early 1970s. There’s lots of fun weirdness to find between the lines, both from a Marvel and MCU Easter eggs standpoint and callouts to classic sitcoms of its era.

Let’s get to work…

SITCOM INSPIRATION

Let’s start with the big one…

The Brady Bunch

This episode borrows almost the entirety of its aesthetic from all-time classic sitcom The Brady Bunch. Wanda and Vis’s house strongly resembles Mike and Carol Brady’s humble ranch home inside and out. The gorgeous wide wooden staircase in particular is a real tell – as is Wanda’s bold ‘70s attire that seems to be right out of Marcia Brady’s closet in later seasons.

The opening credits title card even adopts the 3×3 grid format as seen on The Brady Bunch. Of course, the Wanda and Vision household isn’t as jam-packed as the Brady’s but there is an undeniable underlying theme of family throughout this installment.

Mork and Mindy

Mork and Mindy was a 70s-into-early-80s show with a weird sci-fi couple, in the sense that the husband is an alien. In the final season, there’s a one-and-done pregnancy storyline episode called “Three the Hard Way.” In it, Mork is the one with child. Due to his alien biology, an egg comes out of his navel and out of it hatches an elderly man, as their people age backwards.

Other Sitcom Stuff…

When Wanda tries to hide her pregnancy from Geraldine, she holds a small basket of fruit in front of her large stomach. This is likely a playful homage to all of the not-so-creative ways that sitcoms have tried to hide actress’s pregnancies over the years. And funny enough, it seems like the fruit Wanda is eating at various points in the episode corresponds to the fetus size as outlined by their doctor.

The doctor’s name is “Dr. Stan Nielsen.” As in the Nielsen Ratings. And maybe Stan as in, you know, Stan Lee…

And now for the Marvel and MCU stuff!

Scarlet Witch

In the opening credits when Wanda is reading a magazine on the couch and using her powers to vacuum, she’s reading another issue of Glamorous (which we saw in episode one). This magazine features a woman in a red bathing suit, kind of like some of the skimpier Scarlet Witch costumes Wanda has worn through the years in the comics.

Vision

Similarly, the scene of Vision barbecuing on the patio shows him wearing an era-appropriate shirt in his comics colors of green and yellow. The swingset he’s struggling to put together is also in his colors.

Wanda’s Pregnancy and the Twins

When Wanda gave birth to her kids in the comics, something similar to what we saw here happened: nobody, not even the doctors, were aware that Wanda was carrying twins, so the arrival of the second child was a surprise to everyone.

The way Wanda’s pregnancy rapidly progresses through the episode feels like a reference to Avengers #200, one of the most hated issues of any Marvel comic. In the comic, Carol Danvers is discovered to be suddenly pregnant and goes through the entire process over the course of a day or so. Nobody really bats an eye at this and all the creepy, questionable parts are handwaved as a good thing.

When Wanda’s pregnancy starts causing chaos, she and Vision strike a pose based on The Vision and the Scarlet Witch #1.

Not particularly relevant right now, but in the comics, none other than Doctor Strange delivered Wanda’s twins. Given all the ways that this show is supposed to tie into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (some of which we think we’ve already spotted), this is just worth a mention.

Billy and Tommy

The twins are named “Billy and Tommy” just as they are in the comics. They were later reincarnated as Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd. You likely remember them as Wiccan, the First Gentleman of the Kree-Skrull Alliance, and Speed…uh…his best man?

Very briefly, because a full discussion of this would take a while: Billy and Tommy were born to Wanda and Vizh in 1985’s Vision and Scarlet Witch. They were unmade when it was revealed they were figments of Wanda’s powers and imagination, imbued with shards of Mephisto’s soul and reabsorbed into Master Pandemonium’s arms in West Coast Avengers. They reappeared as heroes in the first Young Avengers series, and reunited with their mother in Avengers: Children’s Crusade. That is an extremely quick summary of what might be the most Gordian continuity knot in the entire Marvel Universe.

Geraldine

Teyonah Parris returns as “Geraldine” for this episode, but this time it’s even clearer that there’s more to her than meets the eye. As we’ve pointed out before, “Geraldine” is a cover for Monica Rambeau, the daughter of Carol Danvers’ best pal Maria Rambeau, and someone who will play a significant role in Captain Marvel 2.

“Geraldine” tells a rambling story about her boss, “Mr. Haddix.” There’s no obvious immediate Marvel connection with the name. However, it might just be part of the motif – the stork tries to eat the fish on Geraldine’s pants, maybe it’s actually “Mr. Haddocks”? We’re still not finding any Marvel connections with this one, though.

It’s also probably not an accident that Geraldine’s cover story involves her working for an ad agency. The commercials are one part of the show where reality peeks through vividly. Ad agencies are, in a sense, manipulating reality for consumers to make them want a product more, and there’s no shortage of reality manipulation going on here.

Geraldine is rocking a striking blue and white outfit, with starburst type designs on them that could either recall the log she wore as Captain Marvel, Pulsar, and her other superheroic identities…or possibly dimensional portals.

SWORD

Geraldine is wearing a SWORD pendant, so it’s pretty clear who she’s working for. Those pesky SWORD agents seem to be everywhere, from our pal The Beekeeper to the folks monitoring Wanda in that command center to…well, who else in Westview is working for SWORD?

While we’re talking about Mr. Haddocks and Geraldine’s job, the cereal in Geraldine’s work story – Gravity O’s, with the marshmallow moon men – is likely a nod to SWORD’s mission in the comics, when they used to watch space rather than “sentient weapons.”

AGNES

Agnes’ brooch looks like it has three witches, one holding a scythe. There are a few options for what this might be referencing:

The obvious one is the three witches from Macbeth who use prophecy to steer the main character to his doom.

Less obvious and much more unlikely is the Weird Sisters, Quasar villains (!) working for Maelstrom, an Inhuman/Deviant hybrid who has had several run-ins with the Avengers

And the least likely: Jennifer Kale (from Man-Thing), Satana (sister to Damian Hellstrom and the Daughter of Satan), and Topaz (of Werewolf by Night…fame?), three Marvel witches who starred together in a four-issue Jemas era series in 2004. It’s definitely not this one.

Pietro and Age of Ultron

Geraldine mentions to Wanda that Pietro was “killed by Ultron,” referencing the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. This is clearly one of the memories Wanda is trying to suppress with her sitcom antics, and it doesn’t go well for Geraldine/Monica…who finds herself “banished” back to the real world of the MCU.

Westview

We actually just wrote in detail about the significance of Westview (which is kind of a real place, too), but here we see the town’s slogan: “Home, it’s where you make it.”

Wanda is indeed “making” her home in whatever image she feels most comfortable with at the moment, so this is a further clue to the House of M-esque shenanigans that seem to be going on with her.

Other Marvel Stuff

Not strictly a Marvel thing, but the opening credits feature a lot of hexagons, the same kinds of shapes you see in beehives, which brings our creepy beekeeper friend from episode 2 to mind.

The paint cans in the nursery are from a fictional brand known as “Simser” which promises “a universe of color.” Jeremy Simser who works as a storyboard artist on WandaVision, and who is also doing work on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So…perhaps “a multiverse of color” might have been more appropriate?

Dottie’s husband fill is reading a newspaper with a headline that says “TWO FIRE HYDRANTS ADDED ON MAIN STREET” but the paper is folded so it says “TWO FIRE HYDRA” at one point. Also…twins. Note the “twin motif” on Phil and Dottie’s lamp, too.

Wanda sings a Sokovian lullaby to the twins.

The episode goes from fullscreen to a more MCU-appropriate and cinematic widescreen when it cuts to Geraldine/Monica back in what appears to be the real world. Not that there was any doubt, but whatever is happening in “sitcom land” is definitely not reality, and time travel has nothing to do with whatever’s going on here.

The final song is The Monkees’ “Daydream Believer” which was also used in trailers. The title is pretty on-the-nose if you consider the dominant House of M-esque theory about what’s actually happening on this show, and that Wanda is using her powers to manipulate reality.

THE COMMERCIAL

Hydra Soak implores its consumers to “Find the Goddess Within.” We don’t have to tell you what HYDRA is, but what about this “find the goddess within” stuff?

Well, we can kind of speculate that this is a reference to the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, in which Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster will end up becoming the new god/goddess of thunder, just as she did in the comics.

Cheap wine, cereal and a made-up evil megacorp: The story of Arcade Fire's Juno-nominated album art

Every corporation employs a team. The same goes for the imaginary ones. So when Catherine Lepage and Simon Rivest saw "Money + Love" last week — Arcade Fire's new two-for-one music video — the Montreal art directors could spot their contributions all over it.

The short, directed by David Wilson, stars Toni Collette as the cartoonishly sinister CEO of the Everything Now Corp., a conglomerate that's bought the band's contract, forcing them to shill cars and junk cereal along with the music. That story, plus all the products and packaging associated with EN Corp., have figured in every element of the album's roll-out, from music videos to dummy Twitter accounts — to the album artwork. Designed by Lepage and Rivest, it's up for a Juno Award this year — one of the band's five nominations going into the March 25 show.

The art directors walked CBC Arts through the process.

Arcade Fire calling

Rewind to 2017. "Exactly a year ago," says Rivest.

"We were approached by the band at the same time they approached JR for the cover installation," he explains. (That French artist, perhaps best known for his global street art project Inside Out, created the trompe l'oeil billboard that's splashed on the cover, but more on that in a minute.)

From first contact, Rivest says that nearly everything about Everything Now was already mapped out by the band, and he and Lepage were supplied with a detailed brief, Win and Régine's wish list for the album package.

"This idea of the Everything Now Corporation owning Arcade Fire" — that was all them. "And having all those songs being products, and having their own logos? They really came up with that idea first," he says.

How'd they land it?

Both art directors are working artists. Lepage is an author and illustrator with an NFB film in development and Rivest is the co-founder of artist collective Doyon-Rivest, but they're also the founders of an award-winning design studio called Ping Pong Ping.

Among their clients is Kanpe, a non-profit co-founded by Arcade Fire's Régine Chassagne to help families in Haiti. Ping Pong Ping designed the foundation's corporate identity. That's their connection to the band, Rivest says. Still, being recruited for the Everything Now assignment was a surprise, he says, though the duo were uniquely suited for the job.

"The briefing for Everything Now was really corporate," says Lepage, and that posed a challenge when it came to representing what the band's about. "They always had a feeling in their artwork that was 'artsy,'" she says, reflecting on every Arcade Fire album that had come before, right back to the scratchy, silkscreened look of Funeral. "I was wondering how we would make that make sense with their legacy."

Both she and Rivest had put in some time at ad agencies back in the early days of their careers, satisfying mega-chain clients. "We can connect to that," she says. "We know how to work that way." Would delivering design work to the totally fictional Everything Now Corp. be any different?

To see how they mixed a little bit of Arcade Fire's DIY-loving character in with Everything Now's commercial vibe, take a closer look at how all song logos are printed — not just throughout the album artwork, but in music videos, merch, you name it. Sometimes, the branding appears hard and clean — just like a regular corporate logo. Other times, it's "distressed" to hint at "the band's universe," says Rivest.

The logos

Is there anything special about designing a logo for a song?

"It's kind of the same, but different," says Rivest.

"Every logo was a different briefing," he continues. There'd be some "vague" notes on the song and the general desired tone — "more commercial, more artsy," says Lepage, by way of example. Plus, there was always a pitch for a tie-in product.

"Creature Comfort" is probably the most recognizable example. The song doubles as an all-marshmallow breakfast cereal, and the band sent fans on a scavenger hunt last June for that particular item. Real boxes were hidden on store shelves as part of a social media campaign for the single.

Part of the brief, though, was to make sure everything seemed just a little bit off. Says Rivest: "We were looking at [making] something corporate, but corporate in a way that's not the coolest."

"We used really shitty fonts, if you look at it," he says, pointing to the logo for "We Don't Deserve Love." On the lyric sheet, which is designed to look like a grocery flyer, "We Don't Deserve Love" is a brand of six dollar plonk.

"It had to look like cheap white wine," says Lepage of the logo.

"We don't get briefings like that very often in real life," laughs Rivest.

"Or sugary cereal!" adds Lepage. "We don't work in that field, you know."

Catherine Lepage (right) works on a prototype for Creature Comfort cereal. Are the Lucky Charms there for inspiration? A snack? Both? Writes Lepage: "[They] were there for reference as I wanted to fake their texture. Now way I would put these in my mouth." The Creature Comfort cereal box was one of the first products created for Everything Now, she says, and Lepage is sculpting with modelling paste in the picture. The finished shapes were photographed then Photoshopped into the box design.

Brief first, music later

But they do work with musicians plenty, and on that front, one thing was unusual about this assignment — at least at first. It was months before they got to hear the record.

"Oh my god! We were too shy to ask!" says Lepage, laughing. "I think it was two months after we started working on the project and at that point I asked, I took all my courage and I asked."

"The pace was so fast at the beginning. We really were in deep right at the beginning, so we didn't really ask because we knew they were in the studio," says Rivest. "We understand the feeling that maybe they're not ready [to share the tracks]."

While they waited, they at least had the lyrics. Says Rivest: "The first time [we listened to Everything Now] we were able to sing every word to every song because we saw the words so much."

"It's a weird way to work but at the same time it was magic to hear the album for the first time," says Lepage. "We were so excited and thrilled to hear it."

What about JR?

Delayed album delivery aside, the duo say they were always in communication with the band — emailing links and images and ideas back and forth. But they say that JR was never part of the thread.

While Rivest and Lepage were fine-tuning the album's graphic design — and possibly branded coffee mugs and paper clips and lanyards, too — his team was working on a parallel assignment.

In May 2016, JR unveiled a new outdoor installation at the Louvre, and Arcade Fire's Butler and Chassagne played a show in the nearby Jardin des Tuileries to mark the occasion, wrapping the set by hopping into a park pond with the artist himself. A year later, they'd tap JR for another surprise stunt.

To announce the arrival of Everything Now — plus its eponymous lead single — the band launched a livestream last June. "Live from Death Valley," the feed offered nothing but a live eye on JR's latest installation, a mountain-shaped billboard that blended into the actual hills like a wheatpaste and scaffolding chameleon.

It's also, of course, the picture on the front of the record.

Rivest and Lepage were kept in the loop on the installation's progress, and they were involved in certain details that would be important to the final album design — selecting the font for the billboard's LED ticker, for example.

"This was the at the beginning, maybe somewhere in March 2017," writes Catherine Lepage. "We had chosen Avant Garde as the font to be displayed on the LED sign under the billboard." The same lettering appears throughout the album packaging, as well. Here, it's been photocopied to "degrade the look."

They had no communication with JR himself, they say, but the artist gave them total freedom when it came to how the installation appears in the album artwork.

They were sent "something like 2,000 pictures" of the billboard — raw photos, taken by JR. "I'm not used to that. Most of the time, photographers want to control the image," says Lepage. "I don't know why, but JR sent us the hard drive and trusted whatever the decision would be."

"We didn't meet him. We never had feedback on the Photoshop, or if he didn't like it," she says.

"Maybe he does not exist at all," jokes Rivest.

Choosing the cover...and then another and another and another

With thousands of images to work with, Rivest says "it was hard to make a choice." But then, Everything Now required seemingly endless iterations on its design.

The album is a collector's dream — or nightmare, depending on their budget. If we're just talking about the vinyl offerings alone, there are 20 limited edition "language" versions of the LP available. In each one, the billboard reads "Everything Now" in a different language, from French to Bengali to Vietnamese, and the cover photo is given a unique treatment.
