It's been nearly a year since a young archaeologist in the US passed away from probable heat stroke. Please remember to take heat exhaustion and heat stroke very seriously, and look after yourself and your co-workers.
Not everyone handles heat in the same way; I am fortunate that I'm fairly heat-tolerant and rarely get symptoms of heat exhaustion, but I've had co-workers that I've had to help out of the field and into an air-conditioned vehicle to narrowly avoid full heat stroke. Don't assume that because someone else seems okay in a particular situation, you are "just over-reacting" or "out of shape." Heat stroke happens fast. Know what to look for and how to reduce your risk.
In many countries, you have legislated protections for longer breaks and complete work stoppages in certain temperatures, like these ones in my region. Be aware of the ones that apply to you and make sure you use the time and resources you need!

Always Ready
If you look at the histories, you find that when the Humans joined the war on the side of the K'laxi most of them go "and then with the superior human numbers, the K'laxi and the Humans together were able to bring the Xenni to peace talks and over time relations normalized."
But war is never that cut and dry.
Back when the Humans had just met the K'laxi they linked a few of their smaller starbases around K'laxi colonies. Partly to promote relations and partly because the humans saw the K'laxi planetary defenses and felt bad for them. They could see that the K'laxi were unprepared for the war and were worried that the new friends would be destroyed by this then unknown invader.
As a result of their own histories and possibly something more genetic that came about as a result of the world they came from, humans have a tendency to put weapons on everything. Not only that, but they tend to hide the weapons too. When asked why they hide their weapons they always say something like how they don't want to look intimidating, they just want to be ready.
"Ready for what?" We'd ask.
"We'll know when it's here." They'd reply.
****
At the L2 point of the K'laxi colony world Bishi the Human Starbase Neutral Observer sits. It's a smaller starbase, still larger than a Starjumper, but really is meant for only 300 to 500 full time residents. The AI in charge of Observer works with the Human authorities to scan the system for threats, offer a place for people to rest and connect before either going down to Bishi or linking out to other points. Being that this is a K'laxi colony, there is a Warp Gate nearby. The Humans still prefer to use their own transit methods, but everyone else uses the Gates.
About two months after the Observer was installed:
"Commander!" The Observer pings Commander Vivian Baker who is sitting in the canteen, eating dinner with the captain of the K'laxi ship currently docked with them. "There was activity at the Warp Gate, missiles incoming! Estimated time is 8 minutes."
Vivian is so startled she drops her fork. "What? Announce Action Stations! Unleash the point defense arrays! Do we have any missiles free we can launch to intercept?"
"Intercept solution is being computed now."
"When a solution is found, you have permission to fire. I'll head to the command deck."
"Aye Commander."
Vivian stood. "I'm sorry Captain Falamaan, but I must attend to this. If there are missiles incoming, I recommend that the Unimminen stays inside the docking bay. You don't have a wormhole generator and it looks like the Xenni are launching an attack from the Warp Gate. You are welcome to accompany me and observe if you'd like."
N'ren Falamaan stood as well. "Yes, I would like to observe if I can. I don't wish to get in the way."
Vivian shook her head. "It should be fine. This way please."
Vivian lead her through the Starbase at a quick pace. While the Action Station alarms were sounding overhead they passed humans quickly donning armored pressure suits and opening lockers that N'ren could have sworn weren't there a moment ago and taking out rifles.
"Are you preparing to be boarded?" N'ren asked.
Vivian turned to look at N'ren, surprised. "Yes. We are. How did you know?"
"I was aboard Longview when the Xenni attacked. They lent us their wormhole generator to escape."
"Well then you know more about us than I had anticipated. Do you have any insight?"
"About this specific attack?" N'ren shook her head. "I linked out before I saw how Longview took care of the attackers, I never learned what they did."
Observer piped into their headsets at this point. "Longview fired their Stardrive and played the exhaust over the attacking Xenni ships. They were completely destroyed."
"My Goodness" Vivan said, surprised. "That would do it. Okay then N'ren what do you know about Xenni tactics?"
"They usually begin with a missile barrage, trying to soften defenses. After that, they'll usually come at us with everything they have, bringing a pitched battle. They rely on superior numbers to overwhelm and defeat. With only Neutral Observer here, they will probably try to do the same."
"Hmm. Good." Vivian said. "Observer, did you get those beacons out?"
"I did Commander. They linked away 27 seconds ago."
N'ren flicked her ears, a raised eyebrow, but the Commander missed the body language. "What will beacons do?"
"They're faster than anything we have for getting a message out. We linked them to two secret locations where we can get word that we need help. We just need to hold out until some of the fleet can link in and assist."
They arrived at the command deck. As they walked in the XO saluted and shouted "Commander on Deck." Everyone stood and saluted.
"As you were." Vivian said and sat in the commander's chair. N'ren took a small chair behind and to the side, out of the way. "Status."
"We have a firing solution for the incoming missiles. There are 10 of them. We've fired 5 missiles and the printers are working to make more. Point defenses have been freed and are freely tracking. Main batteries are online, though War Emergency Power has not been declared. The K'laxi have returned to Unimminen and are bunkering down in there. The Human civilians have taken up Civil Defense stations and everyone has reported that they are suited. We can evacuate the air anytime."
Vivian nodded. "Very Good. Neutral Observer? I authorize War Emergency Power for the duration of the attack, and should I become incapacitated I authorize you to repel the invaders, save the crew and protect yourself in that order."
"Aye Commander. War Emergency Power authorized. All fuses and limiters removed."
At that, N'ren's sensitive ears detected a change in the underlying noise of the Starbase. The constant low level hum of the power systems became more of a strained whine, a sound of power barely restrained.
"Neutral Observer? Please configure for defense, release the main, secondary and tertiary batteries, print missiles at will, and do your best to keep the point defense slug throwers filled with ammunition."
"Aye Commander." At that N'ren's sense of balance felt the movement. The entire Starbase was moving, sliding arms, unfolding panels and reconfiguring itself to be more defensible. As she watched on the screen, massive weapon batteries that she had no idea where even in the starbase swung out and locked into position. Within a few minutes, Neutral Observer was bristling with weaponry. It was the most weapons N'ren had ever seen on a ship or starbase anywhere.
"Commander?" N'ren started quietly. "Can...Can all Human Starbases do this?"
"Do what?" Vivian answered while looking at a status screen, not turning to face N'ren.
"Reconfigure themselves into...into such a war machine!"
Vivian turned and looked at the worried K'laxi. Her expression softened. "Yes, N'ren. They can all do this. All human ships are armed and armored in addition to the Starbases."
"But why?" She blurted out. "Up until recently, you thought you were alone in the galaxy!"
"Vivan's face saddened and she turned back to her screen. "Why do you think, N'ren?"
N'ren leaned back with the sudden realization that Humans were used to fighting each other.
A human at a station on the command deck called out "Energy spike from the Warp Gate. Ships incoming."
Vivan turned again to look at N'ren, her expression neutral. "N'ren. Watch, and see what Humans do." She turned back to the screen.
"Fire at will."

Tommy: Vette, remember when we used to sit by that old tree in Willow Creek and just dream about our future? Yvette: Yeah, we had so many big plans back then. We were going to travel the world, start our own business.. What happened to all those dreams? Tommy: I don't know, Vette. Life just got in the way, I guess.

Safe at Home Plate (a The Rookie post 5x11 fic)
The before, during and after of the little league baseball game: Aaron and Tim when they hear Lucy's domestic violence call, Angela and Nyla watching from the bleachers, and Chenford enjoying a quiet moment post game.
AO3
"Control, I have a possible 273.5 at 9213 Longview Avenue. Send additional units."
Shit. Aaron thinks as soon as their radio crackles to life. There's no beat or badge number but they both recognize Lucy's voice instantly. He chances a look at Sergeant Bradford on the passenger seat and isn't surprised to find barely concealed panic hidden under outward stoicism.
Aaron's been trapped with Tim inside a car seconds from falling off the top floor of a parking garage and to their certain deaths, and yet he's never seen him so rattled. Tim's eyes are on the radio and he's looking at it like it personally wronged him. His hands are fisted over his legs and he's taking deep gulps of air trying to get his composure back.
At a complete loss at what to do, Aaron considers his options.
Option one: He can turn the shop around and go help Lucy, even if they both know she can take care of herself. But Lopez and Harper will kill him if they fail to show up to intercept Moses' truck.
Option two: He can suggest Tim talk to Lucy, but he doubts the man wants to say anything in front of him.
Option three: He can risk a premature end to his LAPD career at the hands of one pissed Tim Bradford and try to get him to talk.
Option four: Stay the hell away from whatever is going on between Tim and Lucy and continue driving in silence.
If option one didn't involve certain death at the hands of two very angry detectives, he thinks he might take it. And yet, he still ignores the one sensible option and takes life in his own hands, turning to look at Tim out of the corner of his eye as he debates how to start the conversation.
He doesn't realize he's been staring for too long until Tim speaks. "What?"
"Nothing," Aaron says instinctively and looks away, his courage beginning to dwindle.
But he can't stop himself from turning to look at Tim as seconds give way to minutes and there's still no update from Lucy. Eventually Tim huffs out a sigh and grumbles, "Whatever it is. Just say it."
Before his courage wanes, Aaron takes the opening. "You okay, Sarge?"
"Of course, I am," Tim says defensively, crossing his arms over his chest and pinning him with a serious look. "Why wouldn't I be?"
Aaron nods in understanding, glances at Tim once more. He hesitates a moment before saying, "I know this is a personal life-free zone, but we both know Lucy's a fighter and one hell of a cop. She's going to be okay."
"I know. I trained her." Tim tries to sound matter of fact, but Aaron has been riding with him long enough to know how to differentiate between his usual stoicism and what was a clear deflection.
"Right." Aaron goes to place a comforting hand on Tim's shoulder, but his sergeant's glare has him reconsidering. Instead, he sets it back on the steering wheel and continues to drive in silence. "I won't say anything, you know," he adds eventually, after counting Tim's third sigh in five minutes.
"There's nothing to say," Tim says dismissively, staring blankly at the city passing outside the window.
"Maybe," Aaron agrees, then adds, "You're allowed to be worried about her."
Tim inhales sharply and Aaron thinks he's about to rip him a new one. But Tim just lets the breath out slowly and turns to look at him. "I know. I can't shake the feeling this wouldn't be happening if I had insisted and gone with her after little league practice last night."
So, Lucy had in fact gone to practice with him. Aaron had wondered, but he lets it go. "What happened?"
"Lucy got a call from the woman who asked about domestic violence at Citizen's Academy. There was some sort of issue at the shelter she was staying at, but she went to work it out on her own. And now…" Tim trails off and turns back to look out the window.
"And now she's responding to a domestic and you think it's your fault," Aaron finishes for him, wincing sympathetically when Tim nods. "It might be a different call." Aaron doesn't really think so, but even hopeless optimism is better than the feeling of dread settling in his stomach, the same one he thinks Tim's been feeling since the call came in.
"You really think that?" Tim wonders. They're both cops, they have both seen the worst the world has to offer, inside and outside, of the force. And they both know coincidences rarely happen, if at all.
Aaron shakes his head. Tim's been good to him, and he can't lie to him. "But I also don't think it's your fault," he says, because telling the truth goes both ways.
Tim nods; wishes knowing could absolve him of his guilt. "I know Chen can take care of herself, but domestics are always tough, and this guy already knows she's involved so he might make it personal. And patrolling on your own is always riskier than doing so with a partner or T.O. anyway."
Aaron raises his hands in a placating gesture. "You have nothing to explain to me, man. She was your rookie, it's natural to worry." His tone is suggestive, but he lets out how he knows she's also one of his best friends, and very possibly something more. He doesn't think saying that would go well with his sergeant.
Silence settles over the shop after that. Aaron continues to drive as he considers the new sides of Tim Bradford he's seen in the last hour. He's always suspected there was something going on between him and his former rookie, but he's tried to ignore it as it's no one's business but them. But as he sees Tim drop his head back against the passenger seat and close his eyes, he remembers the conversation about workplace romance they had during one of their latest shifts, and despite what he said that day, he realizes he's rooting for whatever it is they have.
It's a few minutes later when they finally reach the meeting point, and Aaron carefully parks the shop at the designated spot. The two sit in silence as they wait for Lopez and Harper to arrive, listening to the cars passing on a highway nearby. Finally, when the detectives' car comes into view, Tim speaks up again. "Thanks, Aaron."
Aaron doesn't ask exactly why. Even if he does wonder. He nods instead, doing his best to hide his surprise.
What doesn't come as a surprise is the 'Come on Lucy. Be safe,' Tim whispers to himself before he switches their radio to a private channel with the detectives as they settle in to wait for Moses' crew.
-x-x-x-
When Tim had called asking for her and Harper's assistance potentially arresting the father of one of his little league players, Angela had quickly agreed. It was Tim and they helped each other out, that's how they rolled. But now sitting on the bleachers at Spellman Field, she wishes she was anywhere but here. It was nothing against Tim, baseball, or her duty, she was quite fond of all three, but she couldn't stop thinking about Elijah.
The night before she had gotten home with takeout and Wesley's favorite bourbon as she tried to soften the bad news. He had done the best to calm her down but they both knew Elijah Stone was a ticking bomb waiting to swallow them whole. Once upon a time she had thought she was invincible and capable of taking out anyone on her own, but losing Jackson, being kidnapped by La Fiera and having a son, had taught her that life was truly precious and not as guaranteed as she once thought.
"Damn, they're not even trying to hide it anymore." Harper's voice filters through her downward spiral and Angela realizes she has no idea what's happened after they talked to Blake's dad.
"Ugh- what?" Angela looks over, only to find Harper already watching her, eyes full of concern. "Sorry, got distracted for a second."
Harper nods in understanding and points to the field. Angela turns back to the game and a smile slowly creeps onto her face. Tyler has just scored a run and Tim and Lucy are clapping, perfectly in sync, before bumping their fists and moving their hands to rest on their hips. They're facing forward but their bodies are angled towards each other, their elbows brushing thanks to how close they're standing. Angela's known for a while that the former T.O. and Rookie have a special shorthand, but this is new, and she doubts they even realize how perfectly they mirror each other nowadays.
"Do you think they know?" Angela wonders, glad to have something else to focus on.
"What? That they're in love?" Harper frowns, but her tone is laced with amusement. "Those two are so oblivious that I wouldn't be surprised if they still think that whatever that is is just friendship." On the field Tim and Lucy seem to prove her point when a near home run leads to two more runs and they hug quickly before jumping away.
Angela snickers and shakes her head. "That was probably true for most of their relationship. But something's changed." She thinks back to last fall and tries to pinpoint when exactly she first noticed something is different. "Recently. Not sure when but I'd say around Thanksgiving, more or less."
"There's definitely something going on," Harper agrees, recalling their very convoluted explanation after their dinner was interrupted by an assault at the kitchen's restaurant. "Have you questioned Bradford about it?"
"Nah. I almost did, but he looks happy. They both do and they deserve it." Angela remembers those first few months with Wes when it was just them and everything felt new and impossibly better than anything they had experienced before. She wants that for her friends, even if she's also dying to tease Tim relentlessly about the fact Sergeant Hardass somehow fell for his rookie.
Harper tries but fails to suppress a grin, her smile knowing as she hums her accent. "They keep staring at each other when they think no one is watching. And Tim has smiled more in a month than three years. It's terrifying."
Angela snorts and Harper soon follows, their laughter only interrupted when Blake's father twitches in his seat and they glare at him until he stops moving. "Glad I'm not the only one that sees it." She says, pleased. "They're not as inconspicuous as they think but also not dumb enough to fully give themselves away."
"Not yet anyway." Harper smiles widely and Angela looks at her suspiciously. "Maybe we need to invite them to a triple date and see if they slip."
"I'm sure Wesley would dig it." And if she's honest with herself, it would be a welcome distraction for Angela too. Nothing like messing with her best friend's love life to distract her from her possibly crumbling one.
"Speaking of Wesley," Harper starts, taking the opening. "How are you guys doing?"
"We're fi-" Angela tries but Harper's raised eyebrow has her shutting up.
"Before we started talking you were a million miles away. And I know your situational awareness is better than that," Harper explains, looking at Angela sympathetically. "Is this about Elijah?"
Angela grunts and ducks her head before nodding resignedly. "Took you long enough to ask."
Harper grins but the smile soon softens. "Just worried about you. I know what it feels to always be looking behind your shoulder, waiting for the other shoe to drop."
"Feels like that's all we've been doing since we lost Jackson." Angela chokes up and has to blink rapidly as she tries to stop the tears welling up in her eyes. The memory of her fallen rookie will never not hurt, but it was La Fiera who forced Wes to associate himself with Elijah and having him back is uncovering all that pain again. "And before, I wouldn't have cared as much. I love my family, but it was mostly just me. Now there's Wes, and Jack, and everyone at Mid-Wilshire." And it only takes her a glimpse of her friends coaching on the field, the woman sitting on the other side of Blake's dad and the picture of Wesley and Jack smiling at the camera on her lock screen for Angela to see what she stands to lose now.
"I'm sorry." Harper gets up and signals Blake's dad to move further on the bleacher to where she was sitting. "Don't you dare try to escape." She glares at the man and hopes he will be smart to listen. The last thing she wants to do is traumatize Blake by having to shoot his dad.
Next to Angela now, Harper pulls her close and envelops her in a hug. "We're gonna keep you all safe and bring the son of a bitch down. I promise," she whispers close to her ear.
Angela nods and after a moment pulls back, wiping her tears away. "Thank you."
"Anytime, partner." Before Harper can say anything else the moment is broken as a cheer erupts through the crowd. Tim's team has somehow won, and all the kids are shouting and hugging each other as their parents clap from the stands. But Angela and Harper are both staring wide-eyed at their friends as Tim dips his head and places a chaste kiss to Lucy's lips.
"They've totally forgotten we're here," Harper points out.
"Too bad, I was looking forward to that triple date after all." Angela chuckles, as they stand up and begin to walk towards the parking lot, handing their suspect to a patrol that's waiting for them and promising to tell Blake he was called into work early.
Walking back to the field, Angela smirks at Tim when his eyes go wide and his mouth gapes open when he sees them, his part down under seemingly catching up to his brain and the fact they're in a public park with their coworkers around. "Congratulations, Timothy," Angela calls in a sing-song voice, joining Tim, Lucy, and Genny near the mound.
Tim narrows his eyes, suspecting her words are about more than baseball, but he wisely stays silent and just hums his gratitude.
"Uncle Tim, Coach Lucy, we're going to In-N-Out to celebrate. Wanna come?" Tyler shouts, interrupting the moment.
Tim turns to Lucy and raises an eyebrow in question. She smiles at him but shakes her head softly. "I will join you guys next time. Coach Lucy had a very long day at work."
Tyler nods and thanks Lucy for helping coach his team before running back to the dugout to his friends.
"I will see you all next shift, and next practice," she tells her coworkers and secret sister-in-law, respectively. Then waves goodbye and makes a quick retreat, having recognized the glint on Angela's eyes and wanting nothing to do with that.
"You coming with us? Or do you have other plans?" Genny asks Tim in a way that lets him know she absolutely thinks he does.
"I can't. Kojo," he says as a way of an explanation and ignores all three women rolling their eyes because they all know he has a very reliable pet-sitter. He quickly thanks the parents for being there and rushes after Lucy, his defenses still up.
"I'm sorry about him," Genny says sheepishly, chuckling when they nod knowingly and wave her concern away. "He thinks nobody knows but even Tamara has been texting me about all the time he's spending at the apartment."
"Well, that won't last long," Harper deadpans, and at their questioning look, clarifies, "He turned right towards Lucy's apartment and not left towards his house." She points to their cars in the distance and they all can't help but laugh when they see Tim's truck a few cars behind Lucy as they head east towards her home.
As they walk back to their cars, Genny's words catch up to Angela and she stops and turns to her. "Wait, you know Tamara?"
Genny nods, then further explains. "Tim asked if a friend from work could spend Christmas with us. I knew it would be Lucy but didn't make a huge deal and agreed. A few days later he texted asking if her roommate could come too and the rest is history."
"Interesting," Angela murmurs as they resume their walk, thinking that they must be further along in their relationship than she'd thought. Reaching the parking lot, she says her goodbyes and goes to her car, feeling lighter than when she arrived.
And even lighter she feels as she pulls out her phone and sends a quick text to Tim before backing out of her spot and driving home to Wes and Jack.
-x-x-x-
Tim had been on edge ever since Lucy's domestic violence call earlier that day. That's the only explanation to how he beats her to her apartment even when he had left the field after her. Now as he sits nervously in his car, he can't shake the feeling that she might be worse off than she had let on at the game.
Domestic violence calls were some of the worst and he had seen her roll her shoulders and rub at a spot on the back of her head a few times during the game when she thought he wasn't looking. As her former T.O., he knows she is ready to handle that and any call on her own, but as her boyfriend, he can't help but worry.
As he sits there, he thinks back to the first time they met. She was the hotshot rookie with a personality brighter than the sun and he was the broody training officer pissed off with life and missing his ex-wife. They were like oil and water but somehow had grown up to have a great partnership and friendship. In between psychoanalyzing his personal life and impressing him on the job, she snuck up on him and he had found himself growing increasingly attached to her, and before he knew it, he was a goner and head over heels in love with his rookie.
Once upon a time the thought would have scared him but now, he smiles to himself and lets out a sigh of relief when her car finally pulls into the parking spot next to his. He watches as she gets out of her car, his eyes scanning her warily as he looks for hidden injuries or anything that seems out of place.
Getting out of his car, he walks to her, and she turns to him, a small smile on her face. "Hey," she says.
"Hey," he echoes, pulling her into a hug. "Are you okay?"
She nods, burrowing deeper into his arms. "I'm okay, and better now. It was a tough call but nothing I couldn't handle."
"No surprise there. I'm proud of you," Tim whispers against her hair. "But I was still so worried when I heard the call. We didn't get an update until after arresting Moses and Quinlan's crew and dispatch said there had been an altercation at the scene. And when I finally got back to the station you were already gone. I've been wanting to hug you since I saw you at the game."
Lucy tightens her arms around Tim's middle and rests her head over his heart, her own skipping a beat like every time he says he's proud of her. "I know, I'm sorry. Commander Grey let me go after I was done with processing Kyra and Oliver." Tim makes a questioning sound at the back of his throat, so Lucy tells him the full story of how she ended up arresting both the victim and perpetrator.
Tim holds her tighter as she speaks, grateful that she's here, safe with him, but still a little bit on edge. "I'm glad you're okay."
"Thanks, me too," Lucy says genuinely. "Want to come inside?"
He nods before pulling back, cupping her cheek as he dips his head to press a kiss to her lips. Lucy hums in contentment and raises on her tiptoes to deepen the kiss before they step away.
As they walk to her apartment, Tim can't help but notice the weariness in Lucy's posture. Her eyes look tired, and her pace is slower than usual, the energy and enthusiasm she had at the game all but gone.
"Can I get you anything?" He asks when they enter, signaling for Lucy to sit on the couch while he goes to the kitchen. "A glass of wine? A cup of tea? Some water?"
"Some tea would be great, thank you," Lucy says and breaks into a smile seeing Tim move so naturally around her place.
Tim makes a cup of her favorite tea and grabs a beer for himself and joins Lucy in the living room. She accepts the tea and takes a sip, then sets it down on the coffee table and lies down on the couch, scooting back until her back is resting against Tim's chest. He tightens his arms around her and rests his chin on the top of her head.
"Want to watch a movie?" Tim asks eventually. He's up for staying like this, secure and content in each other's arms, but he thinks a distraction might be in order.
"Yeah. Something light and funny," Lucy pleads, taking Tim's hand in hers.
"I have just the one." Tim reaches for the remote and pulls up Disney Plus.
When 'The Sandlot' starts playing, Lucy turns around to give him a small smile. She leans back to kiss him and Tim smiles against her lips when he feels her body beginning to relax against his, pleased that he's able to help her move on from a difficult day.
As they watch, Tim strokes Lucy's hair to further calm themselves down, and it isn't until a scene reminds him of Tyler's team that he speaks again. "How do you know so much about baseball?"
"You know I like baseball," Lucy says simply. "And I played softball up until college."
He looks at her, surprised. "How didn't I know that?"
"You don't know everything about me, Tim Bradford. But if you play your cards right you might learn a few new things," Lucy says smugly. "But going back to baseball, you know my parents; overachievers and big on extracurriculars. I tried a lot of sports and clubs growing up, but softball is the one that stuck."
"Ah. So, it has nothing to do with this?" Tim asks skeptically, pulling a 'Coaching Baseball for Dummies' book from behind the throw pillow he's been lying on.
Lucy closes her eyes in defeat and hides her blush against Tim's chest. "It's been a while since high school, I had to brush up on my knowledge," she mumbles against his shirt.
Tim leans forward and presses a kiss to the top of her hair. Knowing that in that one action he's fallen a little more in love with her.
They settle in to finish the movie with Tim holding her close, happy that she's safe and secretly looking forward to their next little league practice and the chance to spend more time together outside of the job. He knows this is just the beginning of their journey together and he can't wait to see what the future holds for them.
As the credits roll, Tim leans in and kisses her, infinitely grateful for her presence in his life. But unfortunately, his newfound peace is short-lived when he checks his phone and finds a text from Angela. He grunts at her 'We need to talk. You have been holding out on me, Bradford.' and sets his phone back in his pocket.
The message had been sent around the time they left the field, so he sees no point in entertaining her with a reply when it's already hours late. He keeps it to himself for the night, but tomorrow over breakfast he will talk to Lucy about filling out some paperwork. He knows he won't be able to keep hiding how he feels if she's ever in danger again, so they'd better come clean before Angela gives away their secret.

Weezer - Pork and Beans
The Presidents of the United Stages of America - Lump
ZAND - Slut Money
The Altogether - This Manhattan Man
Shakey Graves - Tomorrow
Houndmouth - On the Road
Sorry there is so much and none of it really goes together but if you want I can edit the post and add genres so you can actually determine what you want to listen to. There's indie, alt, metalcore, 90s alt, hard-core, "classical" (not really), idk. A bunch of stuff that I think sounds good 👍

CBC’S HEARTLAND KICKS OFF SEASON 17 PRODUCTION WITH ITS 250TH EPISODE
CBC’s original family drama HEARTLAND starts production on its 17th season this week in Alberta. Season 17 features 10 one-hour episodes, the first of which will be  the 250th episode of the series that started in 2007. Produced by Dynamo Films and SEVEN24 Films, Season 17 will premiere exclusively in Canada on CBC and CBC Gem this fall.
HEARTLAND is the longest-running one-hour drama in Canadian television history. The series was nominated for the Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award at the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards and has made its way into the hearts of viewers in more than 120 countries. In 2022, HEARTLAND fans watched 18 billion minutes to make it one of the most-streamed series in the United States. HEARTLAND is the only Canadian-made series to make the overall top-15 series watched by Americans across all streaming platforms.
In Season 17, Amy (Amber Marshall) and the rest of the Heartland family know better than most that while dreams can sometimes come true, more often life takes us in unexpected directions. The new season is all about embracing the unexpected. It’s about new experiences and taking the path less traveled. In Season 17 the Bartlett-Fleming family will find themselves excited for the future and ready to embrace new adventures, challenges, and relationships. But no matter how much things may change, Amy, Lou (Michelle Morgan), Jack (Shaun Johnston), and Tim (Chris Potter) will continue to fight for what they believe in while staying rooted in the land that has been in the Bartlett-Fleming family for generations.
Amber Marshall shares, “It is hard to believe I have been part of 250 HEARTLAND episodes. When I look back and do the math, I’ve spent over 1700 days on set which is roughly 20,400 hours. I really can’t imagine a better group of people to create something so special. We are all so proud of this show.”
Michelle Morgan adds, “HEARTLAND entering the 17th season in an industry where a series is lucky to get a second or a third season is hard to wrap your head around. I attribute the longevity of HEARTLAND to a perfect alchemy of all the most important elements in television. We have a good story engine and great chemistry between the different actors on the set. We have a stunning and unique setting, a little piece of southern Alberta known as the Foothills. We have many knowledgeable local cowboys and cowgirls to guide the show and keep it authentically grounded in the western world. But the most important element is that it is a multi-generational show that anyone in the family can watch and enjoy.”
Shaun Johnston continues, “250 episodes of HEARTLAND! That sure is a beautiful thing. Working on HEARTLAND has been the greatest gift in a professional lifetime for me. And having been in the HEARTLAND family since the very first day of production all those many years back makes me proud to say that I am honoured, humbled, and privileged to be Jack Bartlett. Thank you CBC. And thank you, fans of HEARTLAND.”
Chris Potter finishes off by saying, “In 2007, HEARTLAND presented an opportunity of great promise. Over the course of its seasons, the promise realized, HEARTLAND has become a dream. A way of life for many of us involved in its ongoing creation. As we celebrate our 250th episode milestone it is with admiration for, and congratulations to, every person involved in making the show throughout the seasons. For me the dream goes on until I ride my horse into the HEARTLAND sunset. What a ride it’s been so far!”
Filming locations for Season 17 include Calgary, High River, Millarville, and Longview in Alberta, Canada.
HEARTLAND is based on the bestselling series of books by Lauren Brooke. The executive producers are Michael Weinberg, Tom Cox, Jordy Randall, and Mark Haroun along with co-executive producer Dean Bennett. The series is produced by Jess Maldaner. The series writers are Mark Haroun, Ken Craw, Caitlin Fryers, Heather Conkie, Alexandra Clarke, and Adam Hussein. For CBC, Sally Catto is General Manager, Entertainment, Factual & Sports; Trish Williams is Executive Director, Scripted Content; Sarah Adams is Director, Current Production, Drama; and Barbara Mamabolo is Executive in Charge of Production. A CBC original series, HEARTLAND is produced by Dynamo Films and SEVEN24 Films with the financial participation of the Canada Media Fund, the Government of Alberta, the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, and the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit.
eOne is the international distributor of the series.

4, 18, 21, 27 (for the music ask game)
hi charmy!! thanks for the ask :D
4. what band started it all for you?
GREEN DAY BAYBEE!!! i discovered the band when i was 11 and they genuinely started So Many things. they were the first band i was actually properly into, for one. i never really got That into an artist until i discovered green day. like "knows the most niche fun facts about the band" kind of into them. the band pretty much opened my eyes to a bunch of shit going on in the world, too, i think. especially since i was so into the american idiot album and its concept. that album alone was kind of my gateway into getting really interested (and very angry at) most real world problems. i also got really into music because of the band!! green day definitely has a much more polished sound than most punk bands from their era, but i think the way they work with their instrumentals, and their vocals, and their lyrics is what really got me hooked. they're by no means the best, but i do think their bassist, mike dirnt, is severely underrated. he clearly knows his shit!! and his basslines have a very distinct style to em!! i loved him so much i picked up the bass bc of him actually!!
18. what song in your playlist sounds like this 🖤🩸⛓💣🗡🪨 but the lyrics are 💖❤️🥰🤩💘💕
okay i don't know if this really counts but literally any of billy cobb's covers. the one that first comes to mind though is his cover of dancing queen by ABBA
21. what’s the weirdest song title you can think of right now.
no reason boner by ninja sex party.
27. if you can play any instrument, what’s your favorite song to jam to??
depends on what instrument i'm playing!! recently, whenever i practice playing bass, i looove playing jeremy by pearl jam. a really fun bass line to play, AND jump along to! if it's not that, then it's longview by green day. genuinely, if you've never listened to that song i would so recommend it. the walking bass line is so fun and so heavy and it works so well with the drums, and i really think it's a testament to mike's talent.
if i'm playing the guitar, i love playing heart-shaped box by nirvana. whenever i play guitar, i'll be singing too, and i kinda suck at singing And playing so i like anything that's pretty easy to play but not exactly boring. plus!! heart-shaped box is just a fun song to play no matter what!!!

cider and a song 3/22/24
hello everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful and intentional equinox/ostara! spring has sprung. what that means in boston apparently is 25 and windy enough to blow my back door open. very big bad wolf style. but, I digress. i spent my ostara thinking about some things i would like to do with this page over the upcoming year. i also spent it with a delicious glass or 3 of choke cherry, a co-ferment by farmstead cider. this is without a doubt one of the most delicious co-ferments i’ve ever had. when i drank it at cidercon (look i’m even wearing the merch to relive the feeling) i could not stop raving about it. intoxicating notes of rose, daisy, and cherry blossom on the nose – with a striking bite of tartness up front – leading to a crisp, fruity forward finish that kept me coming back. i don’t think i have the words to describe the way i feel about this cider other than to say i love it and i really think you should get some!
today’s song is spring’s theme by surprise chief, a song i spent a lot of my ostara with. this song feels so much like spring. it starts so gently, and, much like each gradual tell tale sign of spring, each instrument makes their entrance gradually. guitar is the lengthening days, drums are birdsong, organs here are budding flowers. all coming together to let you know: it’s spring.
some housekeeping: i started a discord for cider. consumers and producers alike now can have some sort of freer communication without algorithms dictating what we see. have fun in there! link in bio.
lastly: bullpup is playing a show with iron roses/lowest of the low! wild wine fest and ciderfeast are both upcoming, and longview is reopening for the season.

WHAT IS ENGINE CLEANER & IS IT EFFECTIVE?
Tumblr media
Our cars are powered by engines, which work hard to keep us moving on the road. But as time goes by, these engines can become dirty and less efficient. That's when we need to use something called an engine cleaner.
We'll explain what engine cleaners are and how they can help make our engines work better.
UNDERSTANDING ENGINE CLEANERS
Engine cleaners, often overlooked in routine maintenance, play a pivotal role in preserving the health and longevity of your vehicle's powerhouse. Contrary to common perception, these solutions go beyond a mere surface cleanse. They penetrate the internal components, targeting stubborn deposits that accumulate over time.
HOW ENGINE CLEANERS WORK
Engine cleaners leverage advanced formulations designed to break down carbon deposits, varnish, and sludge within the engine. As the solution circulates through the system, it dissolves these contaminants, allowing them to be flushed out during the oil change. This meticulous cleansing process not only enhances fuel efficiency but also contributes to a smoother and more responsive driving experience.
THE IMPACT ON PERFORMANCE
The effectiveness of engine cleaners is not just confined to maintaining cleanliness. By restoring the engine's internal purity, these cleaners pave the way for optimal combustion and improved horsepower. A clean engine operates with reduced friction, minimizing wear and tear on critical components. This, in turn, translates into an engine that not only performs better but also boasts an extended lifespan.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT ENGINE CLEANER
The market offers a plethora of engine cleaner options, each claiming to be the best. However, selecting the right cleaner requires a nuanced approach. Consider factors such as your vehicle's make and model, the type of fuel it uses, and the severity of deposits. Reading user reviews and consulting with automotive experts can guide you toward a cleaner tailored to your engine's specific needs.
Here are five of the best engine cleaners:
Chevron Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner
Liqui Moly Jectron Fuel Injection Cleaner
Red Line Complete SI-1 Fuel System Cleaner
Sea Foam SF-16 Motor Treatment
BG 44K Fuel System Cleaner
FAQS SECTION!
1. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE AN ENGINE CLEANER?
Engine cleaner usage frequency depends on various factors, including your driving habits, the age of the vehicle, and the quality of fuel used. As a general guideline, incorporating an engine cleaner into your routine maintenance every 5,000 to 7,500 miles can help prevent the accumulation of deposits.
2. CAN ENGINE CLEANERS HARM MY ENGINE IF OVERUSED?
When used as directed, engine cleaners are safe and beneficial. However, overusing them may lead to unintended consequences. Excessive application can strip away essential engine lubricants, potentially causing premature wear. Always adhere to the recommended dosage and frequency specified by the cleaner's manufacturer.
3. ARE ENGINE CLEANERS COMPATIBLE WITH ALL ENGINE TYPES?
Most engine cleaners are formulated to be compatible with a wide range of engines, including gasoline and diesel. However, it's crucial to check the product specifications and recommendations to ensure compatibility with your specific engine type. If uncertain, seek advice from your vehicle manufacturer or a qualified mechanic.
For all your engine maintenance and repairs, call Longview Auto & Tire and we will be happy to assist!

Gonna say something super "— yeah and I was the x and everyone clapped" here, but today I learned my liberal arts professor used to SMOKE WITH GREEN DAY back in the day and how Adrienne used to go to the high school by his and ofc them always coming back to the area so he could see her and ANYWAYS —
He said about a month before they were going to record the Longview music video, they were doing a show with a few other bands out in Mankato(?) or in that general area or whatever and originally they were playing in my prof's friend's backyard but neighbors called the cops, so another guy offered up his grandparents' farm which has no one around for acres so they all went there. The "stage" was a bunch of hay bales propped up and during one of the openers this bassist was flinging his bass around and Billie was up at the front. One of the times the bassist did that he accidentally clocked Billie in the face with it but he wasn't actually Angry or Upset! He apparently said "dude this makes me look cooler, this'll be great for the video we're gonna shoot soon!" And he didn't go get it fixed so that way his tooth could be chipped/fucked up for the video anyways I'm going to prod my teacher for Lore over the course of the semester so if there's any olden days Minnesota specific questions I should be asking lmk!!! I'm still, like, thinking about how surreal this is lmao

i can't criticize this one actually this one is good. this one is especially good because the flaws of the previous two (way too short, no line breaks) actually play to its strengths here.
in short, it's a story about my past self's predictive-self-insert killing herself. obviously it's gonna affect me emotionally, a lot. they (my past self) didn't even know she was supposed to be that but she was. after (heheh) a while she was the only character from this i still gave a shit about.
this also shows what I think are my strengths (i.e me writing what I like to read): "Her eyes glaze over the TV, hunched over her bowl of cereal in water. Milk tastes better, but at least with water there's a chance someone will find out she eats her cereal with water, and they could have a conversation, and become friends, and they'll bring her out of this goddamned place. She stops dreaming and takes another bite." is really good. I really felt it, probably mainly because this whole idea (doing something strange even though you dont like it out of the sliver of hope someone will see you and talk to you. getting lost in the dream that someone will see you and talk to you).
"This is pretty funny. Maybe she can tell the people wherever she's going." is good. This one is shorter than the rest and still I was able to bring forth a concept and use it more than once (and well). "Some people almost come to investigate, but they keep their distance due to the pungent smell of spoiled milk." is good.
I really like "She used to do this all the time, for fun. She'd get to the top and she'd make music. She's at the top now." and "Maybe I could turn back and be a taxi driver or something. I can make a U-turn in this space. Maybe they're all wrong about me. Her foot twitches between the pedals." because of how they show her thinking about something good — a happy memory, a hope — and then they immediately cut back to her doing what she's doing in real life. they don't include any bit like "but those days are over now" or "no... there's no hope". they just cut straight back to her killing herself. it makes it a lot stronger i think.
this is the best chapter of After i think. and it's not just because it's basically the story of my imagined future self committing suicide. i genuinely think it's really well-written

Alright so back in November I had someone contact me over on Zazzle, back when I had the calendars up for sale. They liked my restored/colorized images and were impressed by my research on the newsies and movie stars.  They asked for an interview, I did some research and discovered this person released articles for The Oregonian, so I accepted.  This person, Tom, is a journalist and did several interviews in the past, so why the hell is it that an interview he set up, he forgot?  We rescheduled the next day and......phone reception was trash, which he knew that location had that problem but went anyway.  To be honest, I wanted to just call it off because I had better things to do than sit and wait for this fool to maybe call for another interview, but my ex was excited with the idea of me being interviewed so I agreed to reschedule.  On the third day, Tom and I were able to get the interview done.  We talked about my restoration work, my work as a historian and in silent film.  I didn’t like that when we started talking about my job as a historian he kept bringing up other people, and talked like they knew history 1000x better than I did.  I know what I know and continue to learn everyday, what the hell?  Anyway, before parting ways he let me know he'd keep me posted.  That never happened.
January rolled around and I contacted Tom, asking how things were going.  He told me The Oregonian wasn't interested in my story because Longview was too far away......................what?  Okay first of all The Oregonian has run tons of stories on colorizers and their work over the years, why would mine be any different?  Second, my location has literally nothing to do with my art.  So if The Oregonian rejected my story, I don't believe it was for THAT reason.  In fact, I don’t believe the newspaper rejected me IF they were told about me because my hometown is celebrating 100 years, that would be an opportunity I would think.  So I’m just putting it out there that Tom never told The Oregonian about my story.  Tom did assure me he had another ace up his sleeve, there was a magazine he was affiliated with called Old Stuff Magazine.  And again he went silent.  Why am I the one who constantly has to contact him?
Last night I sent an email that basically asked "It's been seven months, you had a plan, what's going on?"  As angry as I was, I didn't use nasty language or hostile wording, just came right to the point.  Tom took it way too personal, and at the same time exposed himself in his response.  He said that he pursued the story as far as he could.......okay if you hit a dead end why not just contact me and be fucking honest about it?  Say "Hey sorry but I can't find anyone who wants to print the story" but instead there was this need to hide information from me.  He then went on to say he offered my story to publishers pro bono out of respect to my work - Are you serious right now?!  Pro bono means free of charge, you didn't even get in touch with me and discuss that!  Also what publishers did you talk to?  So far the only places you've told me about are The Oregonian and Old Stuff Magazine, so unless you give me business names you're straight up lying.  Holy shit I know the scam, I used to tell my parents "I went to stores and asked for applications", that really meant I went to two stores.  Oh and then he ended it with "Some stories just don't pan out.  Given the tone of your message, this will definitely be one of them."  In other words, he got caught putting my story on the back burner and doing nothing with it.  All I did was ask a question, no hostility or profane language and Tom went full blown unprofessional by trying to make it out like I attacked him and he's the victim.  Fuck off dude.  It’s been seven fucking months.
I found his Facebook two months ago and he posts a bunch of newspaper related memes, from Superman to anime.  He also posts about going on assignment, on location, and there's posts of him going on family outings but there's NEVER talk about meetings with publishers.  Asshole got caught, he's not a victim in this at all.  How many months did it take for those other assignments to get released?  Probably not seven months.  All he had to do was contact me and let me know the truth, like a fucking professional but he didn’t do that. I thought about contacting The Oregonian, but they'd probably side with him and it'd be a huge waste of my time.  Anyway, here's what NOT to do if you're a journalist.

Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone?, 1997, Harvey Danger
Harvey Danger is not a hall-of-fame band. They are not special, they produced no classics, they left very little imprint on our larger culture musically. But with Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone? they wrote a pretty much perfect album. Aside from two minutes of dead air at the end, this record rocks from start to finish. I want to talk about why this is one of my favorite albums of all time.
Starting Off Strong
Okay, so you've heard "Flagpole Sitta". Good song! A nice summer-y bop to get heads turning when it comes on over the radio. Something everybody can sing along to when the chorus hits. Maybe, if you knew who Harvey Danger were off the top of your head, you've heard "Carlotta Valdez", the frankly electrifying album opener that makes an equal case for most listenable on the album. This strong one-two will get you moving, get you hyped. Plenty of albums from genuinely talented artists go by without having even one song that you feel like really fucking screaming along to. And yet, from the first chorus of Carlotta to the very last four-count in Flagpole Sitta, if I'm not in public, I'm probably losing my voice. Maybe even if I am in public.
The guitars sound like what I want guitars to sound like, sometimes twinkly and bright with an undercurrent of grungy distorted rhythm, sometimes driving fully into the territory of punk with a warbling angry lead and a forceful drive on crunchy power chords. The drums keep things moving -- there's no laying into the groove here, no snapping on two and four. This is for moving your whole body to the inexorable pull of a fucking awesome downbeat. The vocals are distinct but still speak the language of late 90's pop-grunge with some typical growls, a sarcastic, cynical delivery, and the obligatory megaphone-sounding bridge every now and again.
Oh, and holy shit, that bass. Paul McCartney is crying tears of happiness somewhere.
These first two songs are perfect pop-punk anthems. When I finish "Carlotta Valdez" I want to scream YES! along with the guys in the studio. Flagpole Sitta makes me want to go drive a car too fast, strut around Main Street with the crew, unapologetically enjoy my world with awareness of the enlightened hipster perspective and rejection of its caustic holier-than-thou attitude. In short: Go, white boy, go.
2. Changing the Game
It's extremely important what happens between "Wooly Muffler", "Private Helicopter", and the three songs that follow. And now I want to talk about lyrics, because yeah, those matter too. Wooly Muffler opens with a strikingly evocative image given what you're used to hearing after the first two songs: Flagpole Sitta's "Only stupid people are breeding/The cretins cloning and feeding/And I don't even own a TV" seems like it comes from some Green Day song* but the vulnerability of "All I ever wanted to be was a wooly muffler on your naked neck" belongs on Pinkerton. Neither of these are necessarily good or bad -- they're just well-executed in equal measure, and the range should be acknowledged. Wooly Muffler is not the first hint that this album might be much more than another dumb pop-punk effort, but it is the most obvious. Unless you're a Hitchcock fan. For everyone else, when the guitars kick back in heavy on Wooly Muffler, we know for sure it's real. "If you've got greatness in you/Would you do us all a favor/And keep it to yourself" is one of my favorite lines in anything I've ever read, seen, or heard. These guys are the real deal, another Nirvana, capable of capturing the energy without succumbing to the bullshit. *(although it's actually quite delightfully ironic and clever and if we're being charitable "Longview" is too, and everyone everywhere should really give artists more credit because being authentic in ways that everyone agrees with is comically hard)
And then "Private Helicopter" comes on. You just can't help but recognize everything awful about the genre in the way Sean Nelson delivers "favorite ex-girlfriend." I almost turned the album off right here the first time I listened to it. There's no use lying; I totally did, and I had to go back later to finish the rest. I am here to promise you: it's not blink-182. You are not hearing the beginning of a boyish album about sex drugs and rock'n'roll. It's one miss for one verse, if it's that. Yes, it's scary to hear a record that sounds like it's headed in the right direction almost veer into the wrong one, but I solemnly swear that this song gets personal, it gets angry, it is not a bit piece. And that's why getting through the first half is so important, because it's not their fault that "What's My Age Again" and later Offspring albums are cringey to listen to now. This song suffers for sins that are not (!) its own. So you might be upset heading into the middle of the album. Fortunately --
3. Holy shit these next two songs are really fucking good I mean wow
"Here's a fact you cannot rise above/We'll have problems, yeah/Then we'll have bigger ones."
As a writer or listener for a vast amount of music all told, I am not uniquely qualified to say this but I am qualified enough. When Sean Nelson says he doesn't know what the line "From damage to damn control" means, he is not admitting defeat. The best writers in the world will tell you a good song is a gift and a good line is pure dumb luck. Sometimes, it's just stringing words together and singing them in a way that means something to someone. If you don't feel anything when you listen to "Problems and Bigger Ones", there's something fundamentally wrong with you as a human person.
Jack The Lion is deeply personal and deeply sad. I watched my father lose his father to Alzheimer's; I read the 23rd Psalm at Papu's funeral. I was too young to understand why Dad cried at "Cat's Cradle," call it self-centeredness. "When you coming home dad?/I don't know when" just didn't hit as hard at eight, because my father had been home for me. It's not nostalgia talking when I say I fucking love this band. It's "Jack The Lion." Watching my father deteriorate would break me. This song is really, really good.
4. Now that we're all sold on this being phenomenal, lets listen to some songs about love and hate and all that good stuff
I don't have much to say about "Old Hat." It's one of those love songs that you have to squint at to realize it's astoundingly true. There's not much conventional beauty in that. However, it works out to be exactly what it's meant to be. What a commendable thing to aspire to. To ape one of my favorite people on the internet, the brevity of Old Hat has a lot to teach about the craft of writing. I learned, of course, absolutely nothing.
"Old Hat" is about love. So is "Terminal Annex," but a different kind: the inverse, really. "Dreaming of the fistfight I never got into/Thinking of the mean shit I wish I'd said to you" is one of those lines that means a lot to those born into boyhood in America. I hope I've sold you on the idea that these fine gentlemen are self-aware; it's my firm belief that the song isn't actually about how much he hates this girl, rather it's about the ways that kind of hatred can influence a life. In any case, it means something, and that's another check mark.
5. Taking it home
The last two songs have to mean something too. We're this close to a more-or-less perfect album, just bring it home.
And oh brother, does "Wrecking Ball" almost fuck it up or what. Maybe you're into this sort of thing, but I was enjoying my album free of hackneyed metaphors, with its depth coming from reflection and self-awareness and trust in the artist. Creating a metaphorical house is... a little much for my taste. But it's got that profound sound, and just because it has the T.S. Eliot accent isn't enough reason to hate it.
Let's talk about "Radio Silence" now. Assume for a moment the last three minutes of the song don't exist. What a fucking song. In 1997, before Twitter collapsed all nuance, before Facebook bore our personal information into the gaping maw of every aggregating advertiser, before the hyper-modern fractionalization of every group of people, we have "Radio Silence". The lament of a man who just so desperately wants to be left alone. And by way of that lament, his caricature. And by way of that caricature, some form of commentary. Sure -- it winds up meaning what you want it to mean. Absolutely it's true that you could overanalyze this album to death, it has the accent of profundity and enough words to feed a freshman lit class for weeks, months if they can bring in other works to compare it all to. Obviously this much is true.
But in 2023 when you listen to this fucking song and you hear "All hail to another confession" how can it not make you feel at least something. Some people walk around living thinking a friend who asks for favors is no friend at all, some people believe their public profile is a great place to drop all the trauma of their childhood. Is it so much to ask to maintain a little radio silence? If you choose to read it as a plea for normalcy, it might look a little something like that. But it's all yours to interpret and that's the best any artist anywhere can offer.
All that said, here's my two cents. The ending refrain of the song sounds fucking beautiful. By that point I've already decided what I want to believe for the day -- a song's not going to change my mind about what should and shouldn't be acceptable in polite conversation with strangers. Whatever I'm feeling or thinking, when that refrain comes in, I get chills.
6. Go forth!
If you lived through the nineties you might remember Flagpole Sitta, or if you were on Vimeo in 2007 (google flagpole sitta lipsync), or if you listen to your local alt-rock radio station. But it's not even the best song on this album. I prefer Carlotta Valdez and Jack The Lion. Furthermore, Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone? isn't even their best whole work -- that probably goes to King James Version, although Little By Little was also well recieved.
Harvey Danger is self-aware and self-important, deeply involved with the culture that birthed it and equally parts mocking of its origins. They are fine lyricists, fine musicians, they put the music first and produce songs that you can enjoy listening to. And most importantly, if your friend who likes good music asks you how the album is, you can play Flagpole Sitta -- but if you have a friend who thinks Nirvana were industry plants, well, you can just as easily play them Radio Silence, and get a less frigid reception than if you had confessed to liking Dave Matthews. They created an almost-perfect album. Had Sean Nelson taken a better tone at the beginning of "Private Helicopter" and the record label decided to lop off the last three minutes of nothingness with noise, this album would be impossible to find fault with. Not a 10 by any means -- it's no great work of art -- but something even rarer: a perfect seven.
7. Postscript
Reasons you might not like this album:
It's not very musical and the vocal performances range from 'nothing special' to 'straight-up grating if you don't like pop punk'.
Mired in mediocrity, it doesn't strive for or achieve anything beyond the grounds it covers. No innovative sound or meaningful lyrical accomplishment; it never captured a movement or spoke to a generation the way a classic album does.
The lyrics aren't much! If you're used to something like Springsteen's grit, or Penelope Scott's wittiness, or the complexity and sincerity of Kendrick Lamar, you're going to be disappointed. Hell, even if you're more of a Taylor Swift fan you might find "So casually cruel in the name of being honest" to be more pithy and striking than most of Harvey Danger's offerings. Although if you think "All Too Well" inarguably clears everything on this album, even after listening, then I'll be very sad.
By calling this a perfect album I don't mean to say that it's full of perfect songs, or to argue that it's a classic, or even to say that it's particularly good for your tastes. If you look for greatness in your music, you will not find it here. But what they try to achieve, they achieve, and they do so entirely without fault. This album left a sincere impression on me and I hope you didn't read this far because what the fuck are you doing you're wasting your time go listen to it!!!

Laura Les - Haunted: haunted. by laura les.
Foo Fighters - Everlong: links to this post. this is one of the greatest songs in the history of popular music, i believe that genuinely. this song is reaching out and grabbing a loved one and pulling them close and saying "i know it all hurts a lot and this life is cruel to us and it will keep being cruel to us but i'm here with you. i'm here with you and we can live in this moment for as long as possible and it makes it all feel worth it. i would go through every minute of hurt, past and future, another thousand times over if it meant i got to share this moment here with you for just a little longer." anyway i'm normal
100 gecs - Hollywood Baby: did you guys see that laura is wearing a limp bizkit shirt in the music video. crazy stuff. i'm holding off on posting my march album ranking just so the new album can come out and i can put it on there i love this shit
Little Richard - Long Tall Sally (The Thing): if it strikes you, i would really recommend checking out the video for this one that i've put in the youtube version, it's a live performance from 1955 and he's just absolutely electric, it's tons of fun
Paramore - Running Out Of Time: the new album is really good and i'm shocked they were able to bear holding onto this single until the full record came out because this one is golden. hayley williams late queen 2023
Crush 40 - I Am... All Of Me: I LOVE YOU SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG!!!!!!!!!!
Butthole Surfers - Pepper: this song is basically if "loser" by beck was evil and fucked up, although these guys were doing weird shit way before beck. i was going back and watching some old one hit wonderland episodes and the one about this band came on and i was very intrigued, i'd like to hear some more of their stuff. i've noticed something about myself, which is that a todd in the shadows video is perhaps the single quickest way to trick me into engaging level 11 autism mode about any given band/artist/genre/whatever. guess i'm just lucky like that
Robert Johnson - Love In Vain: king of the delta blues babey. the melody and playing technique on this is nuts with a capital nuts. no wonder he was one of the many blues pioneers that the british invasion bands knocked off stole from admired greatly. i don't really have that much to say about these old blues tunes it's just Good Music
Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock: twisted sister is so fucking goofy and awesome i love it. shoutout dee snider for being one of the coolest motherfuckers of the entire 80s. i listened to this whole album because as i mentioned i've been fucking w the hair metal and it's honestly a really solid record, surprisingly legit in a lot of respects. this is one of the silly pop singles, of course, but damn is it charming and just fun
Green Day - Longview: literally just a song about jerking off bc you're bored. heard it on the radio and said "oh i haven't thought about this song in years" and it proceeded to be stuck in my head for weeks. i grew up on green day so i definitely feel soft for them anyway but man why this song lmao
Paramore - Crave: one of my favorite album tracks. the mix is a little rough here (arguably that's true for a good portion of the record) but the lyrics really hit me big time. like yeah! i AM constantly pining for what once was! even when it was shit! what the hell! so real basically
Parkway Drive - Boneyards: every once in a while i have a moment that's like ohhh yeah... THAT'S why i loved metalcore so much for so many years. and this song gives me one of those moments every time i hear it because that breakdown is IN. SANE. greatest of all time possibly. in fact this whole album is such a landmark for this era of core it's crazy. shoutout parkway drive i hope they make good music again someday
Elliott Smith - Figure 8: first time hearing this song i just about fell out of my chair. the performing talent to take an innocent little educational song for kids and make it just absolutely and totally different in its meaning without changing a single word is staggering. i've always been fascinated by the idea of taking a song meant for kids (or just any song that has that sort of shallow quality to it, which kids' music often possesses in order to make it easy for them to enjoy) and recontextualizing it to actually have countless hidden layers of depth, and elliott smith did that flawlessly. fucking wild. i know some of his music but i need to listen to more
Weird Al Yankovic - Hardware Store: this is just one of those songs that crops up every once in a while to say "hey, remember me?" that video going around with all the cats definitely helped too lol. weird al was probably the first musical artist i could have ever been described as a "fan" of, and i'm continuously surprised by how much of his work holds up and remains just really good and honestly funny. goat
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man: good song but i'll be honest i mostly included just because i thought this story was kind of funny: i discovered this song by hearing the shinedown cover of it and, without knowing beforehand that it was a cover, immediately having the thought "this is a really great tune..... too great even. let's see who actually sang this originally." no real hate to shinedown they had some decent stuff but this would have definitely been above their level at any point in their career
The Beatles - Maxwell's Silver Hammer: whatever. fuck you. it's catchy and silly
Bill Withers - Lovely Day: i love bill withers but i'll warn anyone who intends to listen - this song is really quite annoying and repetitive. however it also has one of the most loaded hooks i've ever heard, the type that really just drills down deep into your brain. other than that it's just good vibes
Carpenters - All You Get From Love Is A Love Song: i've decided that i love this album actually and also karen carpenter's voice. this song in particular is just a nice little pop song but they really bring everything they've got to it, it's wonderful
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity: brought on mostly by paper-mario-wiki posting the video on here. you guys know me, i can't resist weird lyrics about the dangers of a digital future over a funky beat

Today is the 25th day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is fantastic to be here with you today as we take the next step forward together on the adventure that we have embarked on 25 days ago. We’re 25…well…once we read today, we’ll be 25 days into our year. This is a day of a bit of transition. We will finish our first full book of the Bible today and then move forward. So, we will be doing that right now. We’ll finish the book of Genesis and then we'll get into the second book of the Bible, the book of Exodus and we’ll talk about Exodus when we get there but we’ve got one chapter of Genesis to finish up the book. And one last thing before we get going, we will be going to the land of the Bible here in less…well…in about a week and a half and a bunch of us will be there actually in person and the rest of us will be traveling virtually. But hang out until the end today because we'll be talking about Israel 2024 next year. But let's dive into the Scriptures now. And if we will recall, we said goodbye to Jacob and we remember his name was changed to Israel, which is where we get this name, Israel. And Israel's children are the children of Israel. We said goodbye to Jacob yesterday as he passed from the story and into history. Today we finish the book of Genesis with chapter 50.
Introduction to the book of Exodus:
Okay. So, that concludes the book of Genesis, Jacob has passed, they took him back to the land. They took his body back to the land of Canaan, back to the cave at Machpelah in the Valley of Eshkol and buried him in the ancestral family plot, the only piece of land that's owned by any children of Israel. And, so, they go back to this place and then they returned to Egypt, and Joseph passes away at 110 years of age, telling his family that there's a promise and there’s a land and when God leads you into this land take my bones with you. And, so, now we are about to open up the second book in the Bible, the book of Exodus. And, so, as we open up the book of Exodus, when we flip that page, we’re flipping the page by several hundred years. And, so, all of these original children of Israel that we've met along the way and all of the family dynamics that we've been able to observe, all of these people have passed away. All of these original people that we been, walking alongside, they're all gone now but their families, the generations have flourished and the people have become numerous, numerous as the stars in the heavens, numerous like sand on the seashore like God had promised to Abraham. It's just that they're not in the land that they were promised, they’re in the land of Egypt and they’re growing more and more numerous and more and more powerful, and the Egyptians are starting to become afraid of them and starting to marginalize them. And now that we’re several centuries into the future Egypt has forgotten about Joseph and the way that they were saved from the devastation so long ago. And, so, the Egyptians enslaved the children of Israel in Egypt. And Pharaoh, seeking to stop them from growing more and more numerous and more and more powerful, instituted some population control that's horrible. Like if the baby is a boy, throw him into the Nile River. This is the command of the King. And, so, baby boys were being drowned in the Nile River. But there was a promise. There was a hope for a future for this people. And it's interesting because we flip into…into Exodus and we’re hundreds of years in the future and when we think about God's promises in our day and age normally, we are thinking about things that…that need to materialize in a hurry, right? And we don't really think that will give a promise that we won't get to see, like this Longview, like that…that…that we’re a part of a story that is centuries and centuries, even millennia old. We want the instant gratification of it all. But there's a story going on as we read through the Bible. There was a person, Abraham. And we followed his family and there was a promise. And it's still out there and it’s still unfulfilled and it's still going on and it's still a part of the…of the people. God finds Abraham and sends him to a land that he doesn't know. God promises a son of promise and Isaac is born and God appears to Isaac and Isaac passes the promise to his son Jacob. Then God reveals himself to Jacob who passes this onto his 12 sons, the children of Israel who are now marginalized and enslaved in Egypt. But the promise is still there. And they begin to cry out to God. And a baby boy is born, and this baby boy is put into the Nile as commended, but he was put into the Nile in a wicker basket and he was floating and this wicker basket was discovered, as we will see, by Pharaoh's daughter and she names the baby boy Moses. And we will be traveling a good distance with Moses. And, so, we begin. Exodus chapter 1.
Prayer:
Father, we thank You for Your word. We thank You for the next step forward. And for the first time we get to experience transitioning from one book to another, and we thank You for bringing us through the book of Genesis, and that sense of accomplishment that we are under way. We are on our way. And even as we look back to the book of Genesis, how much You brought up and out into our lives for us to consider and for us to be transformed by. And, so, we are grateful for that, for that journey through the book of Genesis. And now as we move into the book of Exodus, we’ve met this baby boy who's going to be the mighty Moses. And as we engage with this story, we invite Your Holy Spirit to lead, guide and direct us. May we see what we need to see and hear what we need to hear as we continue this journey forward. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
Announcements:
Okay. So, like I said at the beginning we will be going to the land of the Bible here in about a week and a half. And we’ll be spending the better part of a couple weeks in the land, moving throughout the land from the Mediterranean coast, the border of Jordan, from the Red Sea all the way to the borders of Lebanon and Syria in the north, north, south, east, west and the interior of the land. We have over the years created the most comprehensive biblical immersion into the land of the Bible that that we know how to do while making it a pilgrimage for our hearts. And, so, we’re certainly looking forward to that. And, so, the first thing is to ask the community here to begin to pray over all of the things that are involved in a trip like that - international travel, jet lag, time zone changes, culture changes, all kinds of logistics, all kinds of things that are set up to fire in a certain order and work in a certain way, and of course technology, the technology that binds us together each and every day continues to go forward no matter where we may be in the world. And, so, technology, safety, wisdom, all that we will need to take this journey, covering it with prayer. And this community is a community of prayer, and I have witnessed that over all of these years. And, so, just asking for everyone to begin to pray over all of these things is my…is…is my request, is my ask, that the Holy Spirit might hover over us as we take the journey and do the work in us that…that we need as we open ourselves to the experience. This will be our first journey back since the pandemic era that we went through. It was 2020 was the last time we were in the land and really truly rode the wave ahead of Covid, like literally got back in 2020, two weeks before the world locked down. And…and we had such an interesting strange year in 2020. In 2021, things were still on lock down as far as that kind of international travel goes. 22 went by. And in 2022 we decided as things were opening back up, as restrictions were going down, as things were…at least for international travel returning to something that looks a little more regular...we decided to go. And that's what we’re about to do. We decided in 2022 to go in 2023. And, so, we’re about to do that. But we've also looked at this surge coming into Israel, as things do return to normal. And, so, we weren't really able to go back and kind of then reevaluate and see how things were. It was like man unless you want to go in 2025 or 2026 you gotta…you gotta kind of make a commitment for 2024. And we have done that. And we have to do those kinds of things because we have a whole…an entire team, both on the Israeli side and on the American siding. And, so, keeping that all together and keeping everybody booked in advance kind of to know what's gonna happen, we’ve had to do that. And, so, we are going to go back in 2024 on a pilgrimage to the land of the Bible. This will take place between February 12th and 25th of 2024. So, just a bit over a year from now. Registration is now open. You can find out all about Israel 2024 and experiencing the land of the Bible on pilgrimage with Daily Audio Bible at dailyaudiobible.com or if you are using the app, you can press the little Drawer icon in the upper left-hand corner and that will open up a drawer. Either place. Look for the Initiatives section and in the initiatives you will find Israel 2024 and all of the kinds of details that you would want to know as you consider taking this pilgrimage, but registration for 2024, February 2024 is open now. Just a little bit of a heads up. When we announced the pilgrimage that we’re about to go on, the one for 2023, the one that we announced back last year, I wasn't really sure. I just knew that if we didn't take a step and return then years and years and years would go by. And this has been part of the rhythm of our year, but with all that had gone on in the world with all the sickness, all the pandemic, all of the restrictions, all of the cares of it, all of the uncertainty of it, we just didn't know. Does anybody want to go back to Israel? What ended up happening was very surprising and that was that the pilgrimage for 2023 had sold out within 24 hours. And even if there had been something that…that we could have or wanted to do about that, there was nothing that we could do. Like literally all of the rooms in Israel and all of the places that we were going were all full. So, there has been an extreme demand for…for the holy land. But even had we been able to expand, that's not really what we’re doing here. We’re not trying to take a dozen buses or even half a dozen buses or anything like that. That…that really really becomes limiting to the kind of schedule that we’re trying to keep and the amount of places that we’re trying to allow ourselves to be immersed in and just the entire breadth and depth and width of the country that we’re trying to see. And, so, we take two buses, just enough people that everybody can get to know everybody and we can be family together and a community together as we take the journey together. And, so, that is what we are planning for 2024 as well. And, so, if going to the land of the Bible is something that has been a dream or something on the bucket list, something that you feel compelled toward in your heart, something that you need to feel, like you need to see with your own eyes that you need to smell with your own nose that you need to hear with your own ears then registration is open for the 2024 Daily Audio Bible pilgrimage to the land of the Bible, than registration is available now for that trip. And I’ve told you where to find it. I will let you know again that…that that trip did sell out in a day and then we had a couple hundred people on a waiting list. And, so, if you are compelled to take the journey I wouldn't delay. So, check it out.
That is the announcement and that is it for today. I am Brian I love you and I will be waiting for you here tomorrow.
Community Prayer and Praise:
Hi this is Dan from AZ and I'm calling to ask for a prayer request for my wife who's been suffering from migraine headaches for over a year every day. And I just…I've been praying for her. She's been praying but it just doesn't seem to help. She's been seeing doctors and stuff and I just would like to get a prayer request out there for all the DABbers. This is my first time calling. This is my first time listening to the daily Bible and it's been a blessing and I just want to reach out and ask for…for help in Jesus’ name. Thank you.
Hello Daily Audio Bible family I am reaching out for prayer. I am dealing with many issues in my life. My marriage needs prayer. My husband needs a lot of prayer. He's dealing with very difficult job depression, anxiety, anger issues, temper tantrums. He's quite abusive as of late and there is potential that he's having an affair. And if he's not having an affair, he's definitely hiding pornography. Anyway, I am also trying to declutter everything that I own for preparation for moving because it looks like this marriage is going to end. Not by my choice but by his and I just need help. I need willpower. I need the ability to let go of stuff that I do not need and to fight this hoarding pack ratting mentality. I don't have a ton of stuff, but I have so much more than is necessary and it's embarrassing, and I'm just appalled by myself as I pull things out of closets and just see how horrible it really is. On the surface the house looked great but underneath it's terrible. So anyway, please pray for me. Pray for my daughter in the midst of all of this. Pray for God to provide. Pray for my husband to come back to the Lord. And if it's God's will, to save this marriage but in such a way that my husband is no longer abusive on so many levels. And pray that I would have patience and be more like Christ through it all. Thank you so much family.
Hi Daily Audio Bible family my name is Evelyn and I'm calling from Germany. I would like to ask for prayers for my mother. Right now, she's at stage four cancer and it has spread to…according to the doctors the brain, the liver, the bones. And yeah, she has done some sessions of chemotherapy and she also did radiotherapy, and she was asked to do so more radiotherapy for the bones. I just could not look at __ yesterday because she broke down crying. And yeah, the doctors gave her news that we just…had broken. And for me it's also breaking my heart and I'm also trying to manage my emotional __ here. So, please ask that you join me in prayers for her. There is nothing impossible for our God to do. Our God will step __. Nothing is impossible for God to do. __ the Lord emotionally, financially. And even looking at her is…is…is…is really breaking my heart. But I trust God and we all trust God. Nothing is impossible for God to do. Thank you so much for sending in your prayers. I would really appreciate it. I've been blessed by following the Daily Audio Bible every day and it has really blessed my life and lifted my spirit and built my faith up. Thank you so much. Bye.
This is Nobody Gets Left Behind from Colorado calling in a praise report and a couple prayer requests. My mom, she is at a homeless shelter now. Praise God for that. Her tent went up in fire. Somebody rescued her saved her life. I just asked that my DAB family can just join me in prayer to put it in her heart to go to and assisted living. She's a bit stubborn but I thank God that she's still here. And I'm about to go pick her up for church today. I want to ask if you could pray for my brother. I had mentioned that he had been released from prison. He was there for 20 years, and I just ask that you join me in prayer that his life can worship Jesus and just be a light to people and that his repentance and his remorse for what he did wrong will always give him the contrite heart and that his music and his talents and all the things that he does that that can just clarify you Jesus. I just also wanted to say that I loved hearing Annette Allison’s story today. I love you sister. You always bring a big, big smile on my face. Praise God for you…you sister and for Blind Tony. I just always love your wisdom that flows from your heart Tony. I praise God for you and Lisa with stage four cancer you've been heavy on my heart, heavy on all of our hearts sister. And, you know, let God's will be done in our lives no matter what we go through. We have eternal mindset. Love you guys.
Good morning everyone __. My name is Gloria __. I'm just calling in to get some help with some things. I just need help with, you know, worrying about myself and staying happy, you know, because I don't want to be depressed anymore. I just want to be happy. When I come to work, I'm very depressed. Just thinking about work I'm very depressing for me. Like, you know, I'm happy to have a job. I was homeless before I even got this job. So, you know, I'm blessed for it. But, you know, it's not even the job. It's the people, you know. This new generation…I'm even in the new generation…I'm only 26 years old. So, you know, this new generation just wants to come to work, stay on their phone, not help others, not, you know, help out and it's kind of hard to endure. It's kind of hard to grasp, you know. I go home every day depressed. And, you know, even talking to someone. you know, here doesn't help. Supervisors doesn't help with it. The management doesn't help. I did therapy. Therapy doesn't work for me. I don't know what else to do, you know, because I go home and I’m so depressed that I don't even have time for my babies. And that's not an excuse. I know it. I'm trying. I just need your prayers you guys. So, please pray for me. Thank you Brian, thank you Jill, thank you China, thank you Ezekiel, thank you everyone, and most importantly thank you God. I am trying my hardest, you know, stay on the right path. Just pray for me please. I love you guys. Bye.
This is Sabina calling asking for prayers for myself and my family. I have been…in the last 15 years I've struggled with really deep tiredness, and I've been sick a lot and…and I have an education, I've been working and sometimes I can work for some months and then suddenly I just get so deeply tired that…that I can't work anymore. It's not possible. I get sick and sometimes depressed and a little stressed and I have a lot of pain and ache in my body. And it's been like this for on and off for 15 years. I've had good times as well but it's really hard sometimes, hard for me and for the family and financially very hard. So, I would just ask if somebody would pray for me and…and our situation and that somehow things will change and, yeah, that I may follow God's will whatever it is. I really want to work. I really want to do things and just…not only just stay at home and not have anything to do. I really want to do something for God and for my family for people around me and for myself as well. So, I pray that, yeah, somehow there will come a change and…and I will know what to do, what is in God's will.
