in true canadian fashion: sorry i'm late

although, in some ways, i'm actually early. You know what I realized doing this ambitious painting? this year is going to be the 15th anniversary of IAMP.

The call for auditions was uploaded September 22, 2009, and if I recall correctly my audition as artist and VA was accepted around October or November of that same year. I've grown a lot as an artist and as a person in that long time and for some weird reason I just can't let these guys go.

anyway, thanks for everyone who participated in the roulette, I know it doesn't seem like a big deal but I really struggle drawing all of these guys without losing steam. it really helped! especially since I don't do a lot of gouache work and I second guessed myself a lot. It warms my heart a little to see you guys engaged in this silly game.

what else is there to say. oh yeah, I put two types of maple leafs. the stereotypical sugar maple is in the upper right of course, but I also put a manitoba maple in the lower left because that's the kind of maple I'm most familar with where I'm from. it's long been my mission to bring the western rep in whatever I do, so it's kind of my love letter signature to my own constantly changing understanding of Who Am I and Where Am I From.

A Progressive Conservative party official in southeast New Brunswick is trying to trigger a review of Premier Blaine Higgs's leadership of the provincial party.

In an email to fellow party members, Maurice Arsenault, the PC regional vice-president for southeast New Brunswick, accuses Higgs of a "dictatorial approach."

He's hoping to rally enough PC members to sign letters to trigger a discussion of the premier's leadership at the party's annual general meeting Nov. 4-5 in Fredericton.

I know the nomination race in a small, rural riding in New Brunswick for an election that likely won’t happen until late 2024 might seem like small potatoes but this one is notable. The nomination opened because the current MLA is retiring.

Faytene Grasseschi is a religious conservative activist who astroturfed a movement to get the government to change Policy 713, an educational policy that addresses gender identity in public schools. Premier Blaine Higgs removed the provision that allows students under 16 to have staff refer to them by their gender identity and pronouns without the knowledge of their parents.

She’s been explicit in her goal to get more conservative Christians elected by signing up new party members to get them nominated.

And that’s what she did here, with the Progressive Conservative Party of NB’s blessing as they overrode the riding association’s concerns about the quickly announced nomination meeting. Another candidate, the current mayor of Hampton, NB, dropped out because of the rushed process so Faytene Grasseschi was acclaimed.

Of course, winning a nomination and winning a general are different things but this is a pretty blue riding.

Point is - all that stuff across Canada about “parents rights” and “gender ideology?” A lot of it comes from her and now she’s getting directly into politics.

New Brunswick Progressive Conservative party takes 1st step to remove Higgs as leader

New Brunswick's Progressive Conservative party members who want Premier Blaine Higgs to step down as leader say they've taken the first step to oust him.

Marc Savoie, president of the Progressive Conservative riding association in Moncton East, said the dissenting party members, which include 26 riding presidents, have the necessary paperwork to start the process to remove Higgs. The PC constitution says 50 members of the party -- including at least 20 riding presidents -- can trigger a leadership review.

"The party doesn't have to issue an answer at the moment,"

Savoie said in an interview Friday.

"All it's obligated to do is put this on the agenda for next provincial council meeting, which will happen at some point in September."

A two-thirds majority of the council is needed to officially launch the review vote by PC party members. If the vote is defeated, Savoie said, Higgs is free to continue as leader of the New Brunswick Tories and premier of the province. If Higgs loses, however, he's welcome to contest again as party leader, Savoie added.

Dissenting party members have numerous problems with Higgs' leadership, Savoie said. These include Higgs' changes to the policy on sexual orientation and gender identity in schools; his attempted cuts to the French immersion program for anglophone students; his decision to close six rural hospital emergency rooms; and his elimination of elected representatives from regional health authorities and the anglophone education system.

Higgs' condescension and neglect toward the francophone and Indigenous communities have led to drastically reduced participation in the party's northern riding associations, Savoie added.

He said the premier has been claiming that dissenting presidents want to bring about a leadership review because of changes to the LGBTQ policy. The changes include making it no longer mandatory for teachers to use the preferred pronouns and names of transgender and nonbinary students under 16.

Savoie, however, says changes to Policy 713 are "the tip of the iceberg."

"That's just the straw that broke the camel's back," he said. "It's the prime example of how he is ruling the party in relation to the people."

"He listens to the people who say what he wants them to say. And that's how he bases his decisions."

Earlier this month, two ministers resigned from Higgs' cabinet citing his leadership style, leading to a shuffle during which the premier named five new people to portfolios. After the cabinet shuffle Tuesday, Higgs told reporters he needed to rebuild relationships with dissenting riding presidents.

"I think we have some building to do," he said. "There's no question about that, and I need to play a key role in that -- reaching out to the membership, to the executives throughout the province, and be able to sit down and have some very good discussions."

Higgs' office did not immediately return a request for comment.

Savoie said he is not sure about the premier's intentions on healing the divisions in the party.

"He's been saying that for years now. He's been saying that he wants to work together with people. He's done the exact opposite. He's alienated his caucus members, party members. He goes ahead and makes decisions without listening to his close allies, to his ministers, to his (members of legislative assembly)," he said.

"He did nothing to nobody but himself. So for those reasons, we strongly believe that when he says those words, it is just to try to stop the discussion that we're having at the moment."

that said I think they know him well enough that they can tell when he's PISSED lol. I feel like Ben tends to mask his anger a lot (which is why I showed his anger in a reflection rather than on his face in part 6 above there.

A top minister in Premier Blaine Higgs's government says she is resigning from cabinet immediately and will also quit as a member of the legislature "in the near term says she made the decision "after much consideration and discussion with my family" but did not provide any reasons in a statement released Friday morning.

She said she made the decision "with mixed emotions. … Serving the people of New Brunswick and representing the wonderful people in my riding of Saint John Harbour has been a true privilege and honor of a lifetime."

The premier is not required to call a by-election to fill a vacant seat in the 12 months before a scheduled general election, which is considered a key battleground in the provincial election scheduled for this fall.

The Liberals have nominated Saint John City Councilor David Hickey to run there, while the Greens have chosen Mariah Darling, an activist and education coordinator with a local LGBTQ organization.

They both said Friday that Dunn's departure was another sign of the Progressive Conservative Party veering further to the right.

Darling said Dunn's resignation "shows some cracks in the Conservative party right now" and called it "a real sign that people in Saint John Harbour need new leadership and don't need to look to a party that can't keep their own members currently."

Dunn was seen as a star candidate when she was elected in 2020 and was handed several cabinet responsibilities, including economic development, immigration, and Indigenous affairs on post-secondary education, training, and labor, in June 2023 after Higgs shuffled his cabinet in the wake of a revolt over his changes to the education department's Policy 713 on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Dunn opposed the changes but was not in the legislature the day six other Progressive Conservative MLAs voted against the government on the issue.

Higgs said at the time the fact she was not there for the vote was why he kept her as a minister after dumping two of the others who broke ranks reporters Friday that he expected his internal critics to put Dunn's departure "in a negative light" but said, "I don't think that we should read anything more or less into the fact that it's an opportunity for others to get involved in politics."

Dunn's announcement came just hours after Natural Resources and Energy Development Minister Mike Holland announced he'll be leaving politics when the provincial election is called this year, a regional vice-president of the PC party who supported a push to remove Higgs as leader last year, said the two departures are a sign of "poor management and poor leadership in the PC party" that rests with Higgs.

He said there was no mechanism to remove Higgs at this point, but said he hoped the premier might still step down before the election.

Holland, however, said he was leaving because he's accomplished everything that was on his to-do list when he became minister in 2018 and it's time to pass the baton.

He added that his decision was "not whatsoever" influenced by divisions in the PC caucus and cabinet over Premier Blaine Higgs's handling of he wouldn't have been able to accomplish initiatives such as the doubling of protected areas on Crown lands without Higgs's support.

Elected politics "is meant to be, you come in, you do your work and you pass it on," Holland said.

The Progressive Conservative party has scheduled a candidate nominating meeting in the Albert-Riverview riding for Feb. 14. The riding on the new electoral map is a redrawn version of Holland's current Albert riding elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2020, said his decision was also driven by the fact that his partner lives in Nova Scotia.

Economic Development Minister Greg Turner will take on Dunn's responsibilities for post-secondary education, labor, training, and immigration, while Holland will absorb her Indigenous Affairs portfolio.

Higgs is facing the loss of other ministers when he calls the election this year said in October he will retire when Higgs calls the election, and Health Minister Bruce Fitch also hinted last fall that he will not run again.
