Is It Real or Acting? A Recurring Issue Within the Rap Industry

Earlier this week, Tione Merritt, who is better known as rapper Lil Tjay, was arrested in Manhattan for alleged reckless endangerment, obstructing governmental administration, and criminal possession of a weapon. According to the Los Angeles Times, the New York Police Department (NYPD) “observed a male waving what appeared to be a black firearm from a sunroof of a moving motor vehicle” around First Avenue and East 23rd Street.

Merritt was on Instagram Live during the course of the incident, and he had over 20,000 views. In a recording of the Instagram Live video via Hip Hop DX, Merritt can be heard repeatedly telling the police officers not to touch him, asking what he’s being arrested for, and mentioning that there are (allegedly) “no firearms in the car.” Police officers eventually found an imitation pistol, and he was taken into custody after being restrained by multiple officers.

After Merritt was arrested, his lawyer, Dawn Florio, told TMZ that he had been shooting a clip for a music video before police officers arrived.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Merritt had a run-in with law enforcement while attempting to shoot a music video.

In January of this year, Merritt and multiple others were arrested for alleged criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree while enroute to a music video for a song Merritt has with female rapper, Ice Spice. Police officers allegedly found four loaded guns inside the SUV that Merritt and his associates were riding in, and they were taken into custody. One gun was allegedly found on the security guard, two were allegedly in a lockbox, and one was allegedly behind the driver’s seat. Merritt was released a few days later after his  $30,0000 cash bail was paid and his $90,000 bond was posted.

Getting arrested while trying to shoot a music video is not something that’s new or unheard of in the rap industry. Many rappers have run into this issue.

In July of 2021, a group of teenagers in Pittsburgh were arrested while shooting a music video at the Commons Housing Community. The CBS News article describes a scenario similar to Merritt’s, but this one also involves drugs. Police officers witnessed three teenage boys shooting a rap music video, while allegedly holding 9 millimeter handguns and making an alleged drug sale. Police officers then made the arrests and confiscated the guns, drugs, and cash that the teenage boys allegedly had on them. That same CBS News article details that arrests being made during rap music video shoots have happened in previous years, in places like San Francisco in 2015 and Houston in 2018.

Additionally, this happened to popular rapper, NBA Youngboy, in September of 2020. NBA Youngboy, whose real name is Kentrell Gaulden, was arrested along with 15 others on multiple accounts of alleged drug and weapon possession. The Baton Rouge Police Street Crime Division and the FBI received multiple complaints about a group of people brandishing guns in an abandoned parking lot. When officers arrived, Gaulden and others were in the middle of shooting a music video. The police officers allegedly found 14 guns, drugs, and about $79,000 in cash, and that’s when Gaulden and the 15 others were taken into custody.

Unfortunately, this issue isn’t going to go away any time soon. Today’s rap music is centered around guns, drugs, and violence, so that’s what the music videos are going to consist of. It’s extremely important for rappers to not only be aware of the kinds of messages and images they’re putting out into the world, but also to be sure to make a clear distinction between props or acting for a music video and real-life scenarios. Additionally, their managers, videographers, and/or producers/creative directors should plan music video shoots in ways that don’t leave any room for possible involvements with law enforcement or interpretation that they’re actually breaking the law. From making sure rappers and their teams know their rights and what’s illegal, to permits, to meetings with law enforcement, the rap industry needs to come up with some sort of solution to this problem because it’s been occurring for multiple decades and it’s only going to get worse.
