Hello Peter, I’ve been following you for like six years or something at this point and though I’m not on tumble much anymore, I still enjoy your content 😊 and today, I was glad I still remember you because I feel like you would be the perfect person to ask about these things I’ve seen in the park today. We were guessing that it’s some kind of like old timey weapons but they seem very impractical and honestly I don’t even have the words to google them. They’re a practice weapon called a dusack (various spellings) for teaching how to use short cutting weapons. They were also used for exhibition combats fought to first blood between rival fencing schools, to show off who was best and attract more pupils. These combats were also about winning money, a bit like the prizefights of English swordsmen like James Figg.

The ones in your photo look like these, made by Purpleheart Armoury.

Dussacke were made of wood, leather or a combination of the two, but few (AFAIK no) historical examples have survived since a broken dussack went the same way as a broken bow, broken spear or axe: into the firewood-box. However there are any number of modern repros to take their place.

Nobody’s quite sure of the dussack’s origins; it may have started as just a cheaper, safer training version of existing short cutty choppy sidearms - Messer, Bauernwehr, falchion and so on - but it (or at least its training version) may also have begun as an agricultural tool.

One candidate is a flax-scutching knife, used for processing hemp and linen all over Europe. Scutching involves beating away rotted outer stalks to free the eventually-cloth fibres inside and a metal knife was too severe, so scutching knives were made of wood.

Here are illustrations from ”Kunst des Fechtens”, a 1570 fight manual by Joachim Meyer which may (there were others) be what the two people in the park were working from.

And here’s a handsome photograph from a seminar hosted by Cork Blademasters a few years ago.

As I mentioned, the dussack was a safe practice version of a real weapon. Those ranged from simple barenaked bladies (cough) which might or might not have had a leather wrapping to cushion the grip...

...right through to elaborately hilted swords (German Düsagge, Bohemian tesak, Scandinavian tessack, Sinclair sabre, cutlass and so on) like these...

[cracks knuckles] alright folks, here’s what my To Write schedule’s looking like rn

betaing and flow editing for change is the funniest thing -- top priority bc it’s easier than the other things on this list. a magnus archives au, still set in minecraft, focusing around horse head farms.

on hazekillers -- already started, low priority. a monologue about ordinary people and religious reform. also literally just a mistborn fic, since there’s almost zero indication of either narrator’s identity.

(ticks) to midnight -- we’re still in the series reread phase, making sure we have all the loose ends before we attempt to tie them up. might start work on this one soon.

if i had the chance, then i’d crash and burn -- very high priority, upcoming chapter might be either the second to last or last chapter! manhunt fic with original characters featuring ~worldbuilding~ and combat techniques that barely work.

assorted fics that haven’t been started yet: the f+d sequel, the datd sequel, a solo xb fic of some kind (probably focused on tcd!xb). datd sequel’s lowest priority bc i’m not really feeling it right now

will be formatted differently than just fics: contact au (a 3rd life+secret rivals crossover), purpleheart (💜)

“What are you talking about? Just get on with it-”

“Tei, um. I’ve... always looked up to you. When I saw you in the music club, you looked like you were having so much fun playing bass and singing. I thought.. maybe I could put my piano lessons to good use, and actually have fun with it, rather than thinking of it as a chore! So, I joined the music club and became your keyboardist! It’s been alot of fun being with you and the others. We’ve even got some live performances together and a tv segment! That’s AMAZING!”

“We could of never done it without your guidance, patience, and maturity. Your leadership is one of the things I like best about you! We’re all going to miss you so much when you graduate, so, I... want to tell you something. So that when you leave, I’ll have no regrets.”

“Amai...?”

“I...I really like you Tei! N-No-Not just, like. But like....like-like! You know? I have for awhile now, and truth be told I was going to keep it a secret but... here we are. Ehehe...”

“Amai. I’m very thankful for you joining the music club, we wouldn’t have a keyboardist without you, and your skills at it are nothing to sneeze at. We also got to be really good friends, in fact, I considered you my best friend. Thank you for your appreciation.”

“Tei...!”

“But... I’m sorry. I can’t accept your feelings. I’m not looking for a relationship right now, and unfortunately I’m into... guys...”

“O-Oh no.... is that so? I-It’s ok... you can’t help who you’re attracted to, right?”

“Even if I did like women, I would still turn down your confession. I’m sorry..”

“HUH!?”

“It’s because I’m going into the music career. My dream, much like Shanna’s, is to be a rockstar. That’s why I’m not even looking for a relationship right now. If I liked women, I still would of turned you down, because I would be a real shitty girlfriend. I’d be practicing bass all the time, writing music, practicing some more, concerts, fan meet and greets, tours... I wouldn’t have any time for love, and I know that would hurt you greatly.”

“It...would...”

“Hurting you is the last thing I want to do. So I’m saddened no matter the scenario, I have to say no to you right here. I hope we can still be friends...”

“ !! You still want to be friends!? Yo-You don’t think differently of me after that??”

“Of course not, you said it yourself, you can’t help who you’re attracted to! Besides, Amai is Amai, and that’s all that matters to me!”

“S-Sakura said the same thing to me...”

“Did she? Well, that just further proves the point, yes? So...can...we still be friends...?”

“O-Of course! When you turned me down, I was terrified you weren’t going to want anything to do with me anymore!”

“Come on Amai, don’t you know me better than that?”

“Ehe, I guess I should huh?”

“Th-Thank you for everything...and for being so understanding! When you graduate... I’ll be Tei Akiyama’s number one fan! Always!”

Tei is very appreciative, but she can’t help but worry that her rejection may of still hurt the smaller girl. Later, she should check up on her and apologize again.

(Hey everyone, I know this is probably not the result you wanted, and I apologize. I hope none of you felt baited. This was the planned outcome I had since the beginning of the Summer Memories Event for Amai and Tei’s relationship. Every single couple in our JoJo au, I noticed, hasn’t had a rejection unless they were already in a relationship. I wanted to bring some more realism into the au, but more than that, I wanted to bring the point across: Platonic love is just as important as romantic love. Don’t ever forget that. <3

Yes, when Amai is an adult, she does end up getting a girlfriend! I gotta design her though. I’d love for her to be paired with a JoJo girl, but there’s a severe lack of them and most of them are underage as well and that’s a huge no. So, a new oc it is! )

Purpleheart AU- already has a post, but no explanation. This is an Amethyst-Spinel swap AU.

Summer Fun Buddies AU- Steven goes with Lapis in Mirror Gem

Zoo-Born AU- hoo boy this one is complicated- Greg was brought into the Zoo, Steven is born without Diamond's knowledge, only learn of her choice afterwards. Pink was still turning into Rose and leading the rebellion on the side, but Pink never staged her shattering. White stays away from Steven because to her, he is the reason Pink is gone

Crack Baby Abandonment AU- "Oh my god, we forgot the baby!" the baby crawled off. They can't find the baby. The baby swears revenge

Captain Steven- Garnet punches Peridot's escape pod out into space with Steven still inside. Jenny is too late. He ends up on Homeworld and meets the Off-Colors, eventually doing Lar's adventure.

Diamond Authority 2.0- The Diamonds all pull a Pink and make a Steven. Homeworld Steven x4.

Separation AU- In Three Gems And A Baby, Pearl did pull Steven's gem out. Hijinks ensue.

Mirror Swap AU- Lapis-Steven swap.

Human!gems- Human gems with canon plot.

The tags about 77-2 impulse definitely Not losing 3lsmp got me thinking about a full blown 77-2 in datd 3lsmp scenario now- like assuming everyone is still equipped with the powers/skills they have, do you have any thoughts on what would happen?

I for one think that Kj would attempt to either Bust Out ala that one red sun crossover fic, snap people out of it, or just cause massive amounts of chaos/start trying to profit from the great amounts of Stuff resulting from it

Though I think also that it kinda depends on if the gang decided to join out of free will initially or if they just got plopped there all of a sudden because could you imagine if you had just A Squad of angry angry people not being pleased about a common enemy? Nice knowing you 3lsmp world o7 (though side note I think Grian would just absolutely lose it someone give this poor man a break) (also side side note Keralis, Bdubs, and the Narrators would also probably do extraordinarily well huh)

man, okay, so. it's really interesting trying to figure out how the 77-2 cast would do in 3lsmp, and tbh it also depends on if we go with the Classic 3lsmp cast or "the entire cast is just 77-2 characters." either way i'm assuming they all want to be here bc if not they Would stage a Grand Escape

sidenote fluffy and i were briefly discussing "what happens if 3lsmp but a kakujo's there" a few nights ago and it turns out the answer is "it all goes down roughly the same as long as nobody cheats too hard. also martyn's voices do Not like kakujo (breakerbreakerbreakerbreaker) and kj eerily doesn't change At All on his red life." i have no idea if we'll ever do anything more with it but martyn totally sees kj do dark magic at some point and is Unsettled

anyway i'm about to start rambling so. readmore. mild 77-2 spoilers and hey if you haven't read 77-2 now's a great time to do so! it's one of our fave aus we've (co)written. so here's the masterpost

right, so, if we just put the classic 3lsmp cast in this situation but give them their corresponding powersets from 77-2, we're going to see. a lot of things change. powers-wise:

impulse is nearly impossible to kill, bc he instinctively ticks back to before he'd receive a fatal blow

bdubs. vines. crastle's a lot more defensible all of a sudden

while grian has branches access, i think as long as nobody gets turbokilled he probably won't use the branches -- he doesn't have that Instinctive Usage drilled into him as hard as impulse does. he's gonna be more of a bastard though

cleo, oh man cleo. cleo can't not use her power, and if anyone does Important Things on the server she'll know. she won't know what they are but she'll Know.

etho and tango are truly just fucking vibing

ren is also just vibing but with a little bit of anxiety from ["PURPLEHEART" FILE MISSING]

scar is [DATA EXPUNGED] and that leads to some interesting consequences

day 1, cleo stops grian from blowing up scar with a creeper, bc the resulting ripple would be so large that she absolutely does not want to know what it'd be like. martyn and ren still hit it off, but with the added wrinkle that ren is a little more initially untrusting of martyn. impulse still agrees to Day One Crew, but in a very serious tone, and also warns Bdubs about phantoms. cleo and bdubs still have some lingering tensions over the 77-2 Incidents. everyone not from hermitcraft has no idea what's going on.

you can see how this would spiral.

MEANWHILE, over in the "it's the entire cast of 77-2 in 3rd life" universe, things are on fire! keralis and scar are our Red Desert Duo this time -- they both wanted to be the conman figure and decided to team up. and by "decided" i mean keralis sweet-talked scar into it and scar's a little grumpy but figures it gives him a good shot at winning. grian's still technically in debt to scar, but he's more of an unpaid intern and the chances of him eventually defecting to someone else's side are pretty damn high.

doc and bdubs immediately set up NHO Part 2 and recruit iskall (vive la revolucion) to their side. they try to convince false to join, but she's decided to stick with cleo rather than do shenanigans. the Gals are immediately declared an enemy of the New Hermit Order and cleo is delighted by this.

impulse and kakujo both independently decide they want absolutely nothing to do with this nonsense and leave; impulse runs into ed while doing villager stuff and kakujo runs into joe while trying to build a house in a mountain. they both make secret duo alliances. unbeknownst to ed and joe, impulse and kakujo are a Day One Alliance, a fact which will delight joe and utterly bewilder ed.

i don't know who wins this one. it'd be a sheer disaster though.
