The first thing Marcy saw was her friends, before dropping her gaze to the broken helmet. “I’m sorry.” Her first words outside the core’s control. She repeated herself once. Then twice, then three, then four times. “I’m sorry.” Her vision became blurry, her eyes welling up with tears. “I’m sorry.” Louder. She closed her eyes and her legs gave out. She couldn’t feel her knees crashing on the floor, nor could she hear the thud that came with it. “I’m sorry!” She was yelling now. She repeated those words like a prayer. A desperate wish to be heard. “I’M SORRY” She could barely breath. She was crying. Taking gasps, she continued, screaming at the top of her lungs. “I’M SORRY!” A need to be believed. To believe. “I’M SO SORRY!” It will never be enough. She will never satiate the guilt. Even when her friends tried to calm her down, she couldn’t hear them. All she could allow herself to hear was her remorse.

Someone hug this child, good Lord.
