Choso: Human or Curse?

One more meta for chapter 208, Choso's discussionYuki in the chapter bring up a question asked to us again and again by the plot of Jujutsu Kaisen? What exactly is a curse? What is a human? If curses have human intelligence does that make them more or less human? Fascinating questions all of these but for Choso it's a question of his existence itself, him being a human curse hybrid. Let's discuss this idea of humans and curses underneath the cut.

1. An Allegory Within the Dark

If you're looking for how much of Choso is human and how much is a curse, you could go the biological route. After all, Choso's true form is an aborted fetus. He wouldn't even have a body if Mahito had not stuck him in another person's body.

Choso is paradoxically, the oldest of nine brothers but he was never truly born. He is once again an aborted fetus. Presumably, Kenjaku made him either by ripping him out of his mother's womb before he was done, or he was a miscarriage at nine months, either way everything about his birth is unnatural and wrong, he even lives with the knowledge that he was only created because his mother was violated and experimented on. You could go so far as to say that the nine brothers are sort of a manifestation of their mother's "curse" towards the man who violated her.

Choso is human in the fact that unlike other cursed spirits, Choso has a physical body, and can interact with the world around him. Mahito for instance, despite being perhaps the most humanlike curse does not have a physical body and cannot be seen by non-sorcerers, whereas Choso can manifest in a physical body (even if it's not his own body), he can be seen by people, if you cut him he will bleed.

Mahito in fact provides a contrast to Choso, they are so different they may as well be opposites, Mahito is someone who strives to be a true curse whereas for Choso it is ambiguous and unknown to himself whether he is a curse or a human. Mahito if anything shares that ambiguity between his true nature of being a curse or being a human with Choso, because Mahito was created specifically not from the fears of natural forces, but the fears human beings have of each other.

Mahito is also the curse most curious about human emotions and human life, again unlike Jogo, Hanami and Dagon who are pure natural forces, Mahito watches human movies and reads human books as shown in his short story in he light novel.

For Mahito, who analyzed human souls through books and movies, this old man’s knowledge and conversation helped in its own way. When do humans get angry? Why do they grieve? How do they trust and in what ways are they betrayed? Mahito lived with a different sense of ethics compared to humans, so there were many things he struggled to interpret.

Mahito is literally created by human emotions, but he doesn't understand them and just like Choso he is effectively an outsider looking in, an alien in a society of human beings who understands nothing about them, to the point where they may as well be speaking an incomprehensible foreign language. They both make opposite choices however, Choso imitates humans and their relationships to one another by treating him and his brothers esentially like a normal human family, whereas Mahito destroys Junpei the one human he ever got close to, and then goes even further and tries to become something entirely inhuman.

In Mahito's mind the fights between humans and curses isn't a battle between good and evil, but rather a war where two different species are essentially fighting for what side will dominate the other.

If you go by Mahito's logic not only is being a curse not human, but it's at war with being human, Mahito defines himself as being not-human but can't leave it alone at that he also has to be the antithesis of humanity by making himself the polar opposite of Yuji, someone who slaughters humans without a thought the same way Yuji saves.

Mahito is made of human emotoins yet his desire is to be "a true curse" going so far as to want to essentially purify human emotions from himself, believing the only way he can be reborn as something more like a curse is to kill Yuji first someone who reminds him so much of himself. Why does Mahito want to go so far? I think he's driven to such extremes by fear. Remember, Mahito is made up of human emotions, he's created by fear, specifically the fear humans have for each other. When he loses to Yuji, that is what he's revealed to be. Afraid. A fleeing rabbit when he thought himself a wolf.

Mahito also reacts strangely when a human he thought it was safe to be around, a blind homeless man who gave up on life and therefore, did not really express any sort of emotions or attachment to the world, started to express a single emotion near his death.

Being able to make sure of that with his own two eyes, Mahito felt considerably relieved. In the same way he would watch a flower wither and fall, he observed the old man’s death.

Nevertheless…

“Jii-san?”

He had a feeling.

It’s like seeing a plot twist you don’t want to see if you keep turning the pages of a book.

Or like knowing the contents of a present before you open it.

That kind of buzz spread through Mahito’s chest.

While he puzzled over the instinctive alarm bells screaming at him to stop watching, everything was heading toward its end.

“…I thought I would die alone.”

The old man’s soul dimly flickered.

A smile was on his swollen face.

“…To have someone… here to witness this old fool’s last moments…”

The flicker might have been insignificant, like a single drop breaking the water’s surface. Even so, for an instant near death, at the end of it all…

The old man’s soul ‘metabolized’.

“…Tha…nk… y…”

The old man died smiling.

“…”

Mahito’s eyes opened wide, and for a moment, he was frozen.

He thought the old man was different when compared to other humans. To Mahito, he seemed unfettered.

Mahito thought the unique philosophical views stemming from such an extraordinary state of mind had freed him from all the shackles of this world.

But despite all of that, the old man was still captured right in his last moments.

On the brink of death, he clung to someone else so he could avoid a lonely end.

The old man was only human.

For a human, it was likely satisfying enough. Perhaps it was even the proper way for one to die.

“…”

Mahito said nothing.

Mahito's disappointed, almost downright disturbed by the human emotion the man shows in his final moments. This makes sense in regards to the way much stronger curses like Sukuna view human emotions, Sukuna calls the desires Jogo, Hanami and Mahito had to work together as a weakness.

Ishigori later on says that true strength is overhwelming aggression that disregards all else like a calamity. Therefore Mahito's, and also Sukuna's philosophy seems to be by ridding themselves of any human emotoins, they also rid themselves of any weak points and vulnerability in order to grow stronger. Which once again we return now to Choso, who says something incredibly similiar when he gives the reason why he chose to live as a curse at first.

He was too afraid to see his two younger brothers suffer as human beings, instead of dominating and killing everything in their path like a curse would. Yet, when he met Yuji he realized that Yuji was someone who was a hybrid much like him, but could choose to suffer and keep trying to live as a human. At that point Choso makes his mistake he tried to live as Mahito did, as Sukuna did. He tried to be like a curse, a calamity, someone who hurts others without thinking in order to prove how strong they were, yet in doing so he left Yuji all alone.

The super curse brothers clearly are meant to use their abilities together as a team, Choso can draw strength from his younger brothers and imitate them, and Yuji someone who insists on fighting alone could have had all three of them fighting alone as implacable allies.

Choso is a much more sympathetic character than Mahito, and yet he made the same choices earlier on in his arc, during Shibuya he essentially slaughtered people en masse both because the world of curses that Fake-Geto promised them was a place it would be easier to live than trying to survive among human beings. Mahito is frightened of human beings and human emotions themselves, wheras Choso is frightened of their rejection.

Choso is also not the perfect big brother he strives to be, he is weak moreoften then he is strong, Yuki points out right away that if he believed living as a curse was taking the easy way out and living as a human is the right choice then by choosing to die now he's taking the easy way out once more. Once again his wish to die is away of protecting himself, number one he will no longer have to feel the crushing force of his guilt, nor the sting of being alone, number two he won't have to do the hard work of living to atone for what he has done.

In that way Yuji and Choso are truly brothers, because Choso is now reflecting Yuji's worst tendency, despite the fact Choso believes Yuji is trying to live as a human he's really not, since the start of his arc Yuji has more or less been looking for the quickest exit out of this life.

How can Choso expect Yuji to do the work of continuing to live, if he's not even willing to do that? Which is utlimately I think, the difference between living as a curse and living as a human. As I said at the beginning of this post, unlike curses that are invisible tot he human eye, Choso has a physical body, he can be seen by people, he can reach out and touch people, if you cut him he bleeds. If living and dying as a curse is taking the easy way out, then the most difficult thing of all would be for Choso to just try to live in this world. Which is ultimately what he must do, for Yuji's sake, and for his own.

pws/rinis are still going w the “pw and rini would’ve been endgame if it wasn’t for olivia” claiming “justice for ej” and just being bitter individuals is hilarious. they had a year to cope.

I think it’s a choice to still engage in a media you don’t like and being bitter about it and continue clinging to a statement that is untrue.

A thing I’ve learn from years of watching TV shows is that paying attention to the storytelling is essential and what has been true to HSMTMTS is that most of the times what you see it’s not exactly what the show is telling you. They're actually great with subtext. I've said this before, the typical audience for HSMTMTS severely lacks media literacy because they've missed the most obvious signs in storytelling 101 that I feel like an unbiased person would pick up on.

PWs/Rinis are only watching the show at face value because if they dig deeper they would be forced to admit the narrative build around Ricky and Gina has been stronger than any ship in that show. The effort and attention to detail build into their story line and dialogue is very telling. Rina gets the most foreshadowing and parallels out of every couple since Season 1. So, some be purposely misreading the signs and would hold onto any idea to make it true.

A creator of a show does not film a whole confession scene, in this case between Ricky and Gina (at the same time he filmed the Ricky and Nini confession) for a couple they are not planning. Everything in TV cost time and money. A creator doesn’t give a ship a whole secret plot that only them know to create suspense for a mid-season finale reveal if they aren’t planning on moving forward with them. After that flashback on 206 was revelead. It was a wrap. Truly, people that interpreted that as closure don't know how to read subtext at all.

The IRL drama + the hit hadn’t blow up yet when they wrote Season 2 and when they were filming the first episodes of the season. 201 already foreshadows how Ricky and Nini were not going to work out. I had said this several times. It was there on neon signs. Ricky and Nini were not build to be the "happily ever after" couple. There’s an actual interview from the creator saying he wants to portray realistic breakups in teen media.

Nini and Ricky were going to break up and end exactly how it ended at the end of Season 2, had Olivia stayed or not. PW was build to fail since day 1. There were multiple neon signs on 2B that literally tells you this. 209 is full of them. Gina used EJ to move on and because he was the easier route. He was the safest seat on the plane (literally). Gina hadn't moved on from Ricky. The fact that Ricky and Nini broke up on 208 and later Gina and EJ became basically the romantic plot on 209 is storytelling 101. I could tell you how this choice in narrative always ends up in teen dramas. Ricky and Gina were always the couple being kept apart for narrative and therefore the endgame.

Also, creators having to cut screen time of a ship or dynamic in order to build another one is never a good sign. They knew PW would not be believable if they keep Ricky and Gina interacting and Season 3 proves this.

And even if Ricky and Nini + EJ and Gina were the planned endgames when the show was originally created. Things change. HSMTMTS is not the first show that changes ships during filming the moment unexpected actors show superior chemistry and it won’t be the last. Dawson’s Creek says hello. It’s been told before Gina was going to be a plot device for Rini until her chemistry with Josh on 105 was too good to waste and so there were changes. PWs and Rinis conventionally forget this statement was made. Sofia Wylie was rooting for Rina since Season 1 and she has always delivered on that.

PWs (mostly ex Rinis) continue being bitter Rini isn’t endgame and use Olivia as their consolation narrative. The other side of PWs have EJ as their favorite character and have proved they don't care about Gina on her own. Rinis supported PW because as long as PW was a thing, in their minds Rini was still a possibility.

Note(s): inspired by the movie “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”. I intend to make a route for each member and will update this post as I release them. Links will be in the text below. The unsent letters that Y/N wrote were their biggest secret. They were addressed to seven schoolmates in total: senior Mark who was in the music club and a self-taught singer-songwriter; junior Renjun who was in the art club and an aspiring artist; junior Jeno who lived opposite the street from Y/N and was their childhood best friend; junior Haechan who was in the broadcast club and hosted the school's live morning announcements; junior Jaemin who was a photographer in the art club and a volunteer for the school's nurse's office; sophomore Chenle who was the fan-favourite player in the basketball club; and lastly, freshman Jisung who was in the dance club. 

These seven boys occupied Y/N’s mind and heart most of the time, so they resorted to putting their thoughts and feelings on pen and paper to sort them out. The letters had addressees, sure, but they were never intended to be sent. Y/N didn’t have the heart to throw away these letters filled with their innermost thoughts and bare feelings, so they hid them in a box in their closet, never again to see the light of day. Y/N thought that they were safer there than in a landfill. 

Y/N thought wrong.

Route 208 [Moss and Basil]

Moss scanned the area, hand raised to shield their eyes from the sun - although the red bandana tied around their head was certainly helping, a proper hat would have been better.

Kubfu was mimicking them, standing on a nearby boulder and doing the very same pose Moss was, while Marsh remained curled up around Moss's shoulders, and Tee was walking with Phantump.

"....bridge, river, why are there so many rivers here? maybe im not as close as i-" Moss cut themself off as they spotted a familiar bony bird, looking way too amused. Following the runerigus's gaze down into the river, Moss saw a very wet and very grumpy Basil, flipping the bird to.... well, the bird.

"BASIL!!" Moss yelped, and scrambled down the steep rocky bank, a wide grin splitting their face. In their haste, Moss nearly tumbled into the river themself, but managed to keep a hold on a rock, reaching their hand out towards Basil.

"hi! hi it's me! are you ok do you need help out of the river?" Moss was still grinning wide, their sharpedo-like teeth poking out over their lips in their excitement. Their mismatched red and green eyes glimmered in the sunlight.

...Alright. So. Aitoria is over, which means it's time to do this.

Other than watching some battles and getting some tips from the gym guide, I've done a bit of research into Silk's potential moves and Routes 208 and 209. From what you all have suggested, I looked for:

Pokémon with Ghost or Dark-type moves. Silk learns Bite soon enough, but we need backup.

Dark-types, which are great for resistance to Ghost-type moves. Normal-types have immunity but need off-type coverage.

Pokémon that can help with traversal.

That doesn't leave us with much. Two routes and a tower isn't much to work with... however, there is a Pokémon that fits all these qualities: Murkrow.

I did this when the games came out. I was trying to make the game hard because I already knew it was going to be too easy.

This is my team for the grass Gym. I didn't catch anything on route 211 because Celeste decided to kill a meditite encounter, so, no new mon and no fire type...

Celeste and Piper had a little trouble with Roserade but we did it with my BIG BRAIN tactics! who needs fire types? then Celeste evolved... and a level later she evolved again! Now that I have a Crobat I can safely say this run is in the bag!

Hopkins evolved and now I have a killing machine with intimidate!

btw, I didn't catch anything on route 211 and 206 because Celeste likes crits.

Empoleon

Moves: Hydro Pump, Ice Beam, Metal Claw, Aqua Jet

Yuu’s starter Pokemon, Empoleon, has been with Yuu since her school days and since he was a little Piplup. If she was feeling down because of schoolwork, he was there to cheer her on. If she was going out for errands, he was there to help her. Ever the reliable and responsible one, the rest of the team look up to him as their leader. Of course, Yuu and the others are always there for him just as he is for them. Usually the voice of reason and peacemaker.

Staraptor

Moves: Close Combat, Brave Bird, Aerial Ace, Double Team

Yuu met Staraptor as a Starly while she was on a family trip to Lake Valor. He’s a tough guy kind of bird with a soft heart. The sort of big brother who would fight with his own two fists (or in this case, his wings and talons) for you to the ends of the earth. The one who intimidates others just from how he looks. Best friends with Empoleon.

Kirlia

Moves: Psychic, Calm Mind, Draining Kiss, Disarming Voice

Yuu met Kirlia as a Ralts on Route 208. Her school was holding a practical class on travel safety and essentials there. While Yuu was setting up her tent, she found a Ralts looking at the class curiously from behind a tree. The curious Ralts wanted to help Yuu, and when she informed the teacher, Ralts was allowed to help her and to roam around the campsite. Once the practical class was over, Ralts didn’t want to leave Yuu’s side, so she caught her. The big sister of the group.

Lampent

Moves: Inferno, Shadow Ball, Confuse Ray, Fire Spin

Yuu met Lampent as a Litwick when she and her family went to Unova. They traveled to pay respects to a relative’s Pokemon at the Celestial Tower. While there, they found a Litwick tending to the Pokemon’s grave. He stayed by their side the entire time they were in Unova, and then decided to come with Yuu when they were going to leave. Will spit embers at disrespectful people.

Sylveon

Moves: Fairy Wind, Misty Terrain, Moonblast, Swift

Yuu met Sylveon as an Eevee at her relative’s ranch. She was a wild Eevee that came around the ranch often because of the open space. She helped out here and there and the ranchers basically deemed her one of their own even if they never caught her. Yuu was helping around the ranch the same day that Eevee came by and the two hit it off. Loves to help out.

Alolan Vulpix

Moves: Powder Snow, Icy Wind, Aurora Beam, Payback

Yuu met Vulpix on a trip to Alola. Her brother, Subaru, managed to win a trip for three to Alola from a raffle. Their parents insisted that their children all take the trip together, and so the siblings flew to Alola for a week. While hiking through Mount Lanakila, they came across a family of Ninetales and Vulpix, and one of the Vulpix took a shine to Yuu. The little sister of the group and can be quite feisty.

So, I'm going through my old pokemon games just to see what I have, and I get to Platinum. I'm just lookin in the PC boxes, and I get to a male combee that looks... off. I stare at it a moment, trying to decide if it's just an off color that some of the older games have compared to a new one, because it couldn't possibly be shiny. I would have remembered a shiny combee. I would have remembered ANY shiny, because as far as I could recall, my first main game shiny was in SWORD.

I look at its name. Cheerios. I get it; because Honey Nut. A name that fits what I would name something. If it were a shiny I would have named it something that drew more attention, right?

The old games dont have the shiny indicator unless you go into the summary, so I do, and lo and behold, it is a shiny! And I am listed as its original trainer. Somehow I caught this combee and didn't realize it was a shiny and just named it a threw it into a box.

So I guess my first (caught) shiny (I'm still mad at the goldeen that got away) was a male combee, caught on route 208, Jan 31 2013.

For my request, how about my paralyzed and mute Ford from my 'He Signs I Love You' fic? Maybe the other Pines's surrounding Ford on his wheelchair as he signs a story of an adventure he had during his research?

The kids had a bad idea. In their defense, Ford was 100% on board with this bad idea.

Day 2 of the @gf10yearslaterzine challenge; Favorite Journal page

I’m not sure what to do for art for this piece so I just took a picture of the book itself.

I love this page so much. Just… Ford realizing where he went wrong; the folly in his insistence in self-isolation. His biggest flaw to me was always his dismissal of others; his brother especially; people need other people. And it was super cathartic to see him realize that; see him realize how important the people around him really are, and how he shouldn’t take them for granted.

To me, Ford is a guy who buried his self-hate under an ego, and insisted that he was better than everyone else to cover up the fact that he didn’t see himself worthy of other people unless he proved himself to be extraordinary. It never occurred to him that others could love him as he was, and because of this, he was quickly dismissive of the ones who did because they’re love just didn’t compute with how he thought of himself. His self-worth issues lead to his arrogance and refusal to consider other people; he had to be the lone hero because he had to prove he deserved to exist. And it’s super nice to see him being ok with simply being.

Also, after all the hurting Stanley put himself through for his brother, seeing him finally get the love he deserved added to the heartwarming. He worked so hard for his brother and was knocked around so often for his efforts. This man more than earned his happy ending, Damnit!
