Retsuden Oneshot - Medicine - Part 1
“Ah! Oh, shit! My damn skin’s peeling from the cold! Wait. Wait! This is perfect! Now I have an excuse to go to the medical office!”
“What’s so great about the medical office…? Is something in there?”
“Huh? Seriously? Haven’t you heard, Sasuke? We’ve got a new doctor. A woman doctor. Everyone can’t stop talking about how beautiful and gentle she is. Oh, and the best part is? She’s single! I didn’t see a ring on her finger, so you bet I’m gonna take my chances!”
A… ring?
************************
It isn’t long before Sasuke overhears the other prisoners gushing over the doctor, too. And it soon becomes apparent that it isn’t only his cellmate, Jiji, who is infatuated by the new arrival. Some manner of enchantment has been cast upon a large proportion of the inmates, for all at once they are tripping over their own feet, and even faking injuries and illnesses in their eagerness to secure a visit to the medical room.
They are grown men, criminals without morals or principles, yet they lust over a woman’s presence like a pack of wild animals.
It is pathetic. And Sasuke, who has both a wife and a young daughter, is filled with disgust, hearing the clear lack of respect they harbour toward women.
“You’re sure she’s single?”
“I’m telling ya, I saw it with my own eyes! No ring. You know what that means, boys.”
“Dumbass, maybe she takes it off at work?”
“I know what else we can make her take off at work...”
Lewd, raucous laughter follows the vulgar remark. The conversation continues to float around him, and Sasuke tunes it out as he sits at his table, staring disinterestedly down at the mushy contents of his lunch plate. But his general lack of appetite makes stomaching the bland meal a challenge in itself.
Being on the move so often due to the many missions he undertakes in the name of keeping Konoha safe, means that hot, flavoursome meals are a rarity. He is no stranger to tasteless food. Yet this particular mission - and its culinary offerings - are starting to grate on his patience. Most of the inmates are brutes, or utterly intolerable company. Jiji speaks incessantly, and is the kind of irritating that Sasuke normally tolerates only from the knuckle-headed Naruto.
Naruto. Who is desperately unwell. Naruto, who is counting on Sasuke to find a cure for his mysterious ailment. Something twists deeply inside Sasuke’s stomach at the thought of his steadfast rival and best friend being so vulnerable. At the realisation that every day he spends cooped up inside this hell-hole, Naruto’s disease progresses.
“-pretty sure I made her blush when I complimented her hair.”
Sasuke blinks, and is snapped abruptly from his brooding thoughts when he inadvertently catches onto the end of the conversation taking place from the bench behind where he is seated.
“Just like the petals on that tree outside, huh?”
Sasuke stills. He stares down at his plate unseeingly. All at once he is listening much more intently. So intently that he begins to hear the rush of blood throbbing in his ears.
Inside his chest, his heart begins to thud. Because he knows which tree they are talking about. The very same one he has watched for hours whilst in his forced confinement, waiting for the precise moment its petals bloom.
He knows their colour.
And he knows there is only one woman in the world - only one woman in his heart - whose hair matches that precise, pale-pink hue.
“Ah, shit. I bet she blushes prettily when she’s touched, too.”
More rowdy laughter, then someone remarks, “Down, dog.”
The blood coursing in Sasuke’s veins sizzles and crackles, turning to molten flame. His chest burns with fury, and the desire to leap up from his seat and rip out the tongue of the vermin who dares to refer to his wife in such a degrading manner causes the fingers of his right hand to clench tightly around his fork.
He envisages whipping around and flinging the utensil straight at the man’s jugular. The ends of the fork are blunt, but in his battle-trained hand, it is a deadly weapon, capable of inflicting lethal wounds. In his head, he entertains a thousand deaths for the unsuspecting fool, imagines a thousand ways his Rinnegan and Sharingan could inflict the sweetest, most satisfying degree of torture. Sasuke knows he can bring the entire room to its knees, can have every man crippled helplessly under devastating genjutsu in a heartbeat, if he so pleases. In less than a minute, they could all be permanently silenced, and it will be no less than what all of the scum deserve.
But he is a shinobi. Naruto and Konoha depend upon him to succeed. And he knows that this is a serious mission that he cannot afford, under any circumstances, to compromise.
Releasing a silent exhale, he slowly lowers his fork, ensuring that his expression remains stoic and unreadable. His anger, born of the ferocity of the protectiveness he bears for his precious family, morphs quickly to internal concern. Questions swirl through his mind, his thoughts flurrying like a whirling blizzard. Where is Sarada, his child, if her mother is not with her? He does not know why Sakura is in the prison. But he does know that it is time for him to take a trip of his own to the medical room.
Slipping the fork beneath the table, he stabs it down into his right thigh with force, without so much as grimacing as it punctures through flesh. He watches, his gaze burning, as across the room Jiji theatrically clutches at his stomach, speaking to a frowning, unimpressed security guard. From the way Sasuke’s cellmate is hopping about on his feet, it’s clear he is once again pleading for medical attention.
An occurrence that has been happening far too often for Sasuke’s liking. And at that moment, he decides that enough is enough.
When the guard finally relents, and begins to lead Jiji out of the canteen, Sasuke silently rises from his seat, and follows.

Inspired by Sasuke Retsuden and the release of the first manga chapter, and artwork by @tenartist, and @ceejss and @Gwollu on Twitter. Part 2 will follow whenever it’s done.
I haven’t written ‘canon’ universe SasuSaku for ages and I think I’m rusty as hell with it since I’ve gotten so used to thinking of them in Quietus lore. Feeling very out of touch with my writing in general, but I needed to get this idea out my head.
