STORYLINE: Deep in the fertile Nile delta was an island paradise called Opet. The pharaoh created it to honor the givers of life in his realm, for without them there would be no future. It was a clean and safe place to give birth with good medical care in the teachings of Imhotep. But this was also the land of gods and demons. The people of Kemet took very seriously threats from evil creatures who could create illness or snatch infants. The most trusted members of Pharaoh's army, the Stinging Bees, were rotated in and out of Opet. The soldiers considered it a posh assignment, even a prestigious reward to guard so many pretty faces. The women often chose to marry their protectors. Captain Djoser was a ferocious fighter, but with one smile from the beguiling Priestess of Hathor, he became as weak as a kitten. They had planned to wed and start a family. But then the unthinkable happened. She was suddenly struck by a mystery illness. Djoser knew all to well the signs of a demon attack. He swore on a small golden idol of Hathor, he would find the Unweaver and force him to remove the curse from his beloved. It was my favourite part of primary school. Show & Tell Day. At our primary school, it was on a Tuesday, and you had to tell the teacher ahead of time if you were going to bring something and it couldn’t be alive or have any allergens, so that peanut-eating hamster was totally out.

I’m pretty convinced that Freyja’s two cats had names, because

1. she’s super freaking important. She’s the goddess of seydr (magic), fertility and lust (sometimes love, and I’ve once seen her described as the mother of Lofn, the goddess of love. Not sure how correct that is.), she’s a powerful vanir witch who came to Asgard as an ambassador after the vanir vs aesir war (in some stories, she was the one who started the war und the guise of Gullveig). She’s also sort of a death goddess, what with ruling over the third place place people can go to after death (Folkvangr). She’s also a goddess of war and gold. And she’s the one all the gods go to when they need a falcon skin to transform into a falcon. Even Loki.

2. Her necklace is named. (Actually, items being named isn’t all that weird in Norse mythology. Tho’s gloves are named).

3. While vikings are known for going out to pillage, they were mostly tradesmen and farmers. It’s not a stretch to think that cats would have been super important, what with keeping mice and such away from the crops.

4. Do you know how many animals in Norse mythology have names? Sleipnir, Fenrir, Tanngrisnir and Tanngjostr(Tho’s goats), Gullinbursti(Freyr’s warthog/pig that could run and fly faster than any horse and lit up its surroundings so it looked like it was daylight), Huginn and Muninn(Odin’s ravens), Geri and Freki(Odin’s wolves), Gulltopr(Heimdall’s goldenmaned horse), Jörmungandr(though it’s kinda more a title), Sæhrimnir(the the pig - I think - who provides the meat for feasts in Valhalla and comes back to life each night), Heidrun(the goat who supplies the mead - from her udder - for Valhalla feasts), Skinfaxi (Dagr’s horse) and Hrimfaxi(Nott’s horse). I know I missed at least one, but I don’t want make this longer.

5. She rules Folkvangr, a place where dead warriors go. I think this is imporant enough to repeat cause, you know, death was presumably a regular thing in viking age.

6. Her magic is (I’m sorta guessing here, but it seems reasonable) more powerful than Odin’s. Sure, she doesn’t go around showing off, cause she doesn’t need her ego stroked like some of her co-gods (*cough* Odin *cough*), but there are modern, well-researched interpretations where she’s the one to teach Odin.

7. Monks probably hated her, so it seems like they would have been doing their best to bury any story that they couldn’t use to slutshame her.

So, yeah, I firmly believe that her cats had names. (of course my dad thinks that they are innuendos, and that’s why they were buried, but, I mean ... that’s the sort of dude he is. He’s cool though)
