Turkey vultures / aura gallipavo (Cathartes aura). In Sierra Vista, Arizona.

About fifteen turkey vultures are resident in my neighborhood this winter. Long-timers have told me the birds rarely overwintered here until recently. I suspect their presence reflects a phenological shift due to global climate change.

Yosemite National Park, CA (No. 12)

Half Dome is a quartz monzonitebatholith at the eastern end of Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park, California. It is a well-known rock formation in the park, named for its distinct shape. One side is a sheer face while the other three sides are smooth and round, making it appear like a dome cut in half. It stands at nearly 8,800 feet above sea level and is composed of quartz monzonite, an igneous rock that solidified several thousand feet within the Earth. At its core are the remains of a magma chamber that cooled slowly and crystallized beneath the Earth's surface. The solidified magma chamber was then exposed and cut in half by erosion, therefore leading to the geographic name Half Dome.

El Capitan (Spanish: El Capitán; "the Captain" or "the Chief") is a vertical rock formation in Yosemite National Park, on the north side of Yosemite Valley, near its western end. The granite monolith is about 3,000 feet (914 m) from base to summit along its tallest face and is a world-famous location for big wall climbing, including the disciplines of aid climbing, free climbing, and more recently for free solo climbing.

Super Blue Moon behind the big dome of the Lick Observatory by Peter Thoeny - Quality HDR Photography Via Flickr: Tomorrow is Super Blue Moon, tonight it is 98.8% full moon. The day before full moon is better for photography because you get the ambient sunset light, so I decided to take the moon shot tonight. The historical Lick Observatory is located high above San Jose, California, and lends itself as the foreground for a full moon shot. I manually calculated the exact position where to put my tripod – 10 miles (16 km) away from the observatory, so that I could get the full moon dead center behind the big dome of the observatory. We currently have a spare the air alert in the Silicon Valley, so the air is hazy, and has a brown-orange hue. I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, blended them, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.
