Some Duke Thomas headcanon

No one of the batkids know how Duke's power actually works, then when Duke says random thing everyone believe in him. If Duke says he can fly, then he can fly, that's that

Duke 100% believes that Cassandra and Damian are cryptids (for different reasons)

In Cass side - there was this day when he was watching a movie when he suddenly felt something sitting next to him, it was Cass. He didn't even see her come in, she didn't even make a sound, she just show up in one blink

In Damian side - there one night were only Duke and Damian in the library, Duke then saw something shiny through the window outside the house, It made him anxious, but Damian just looked at him blankly and said with a morbid calm "can you see them too? Today is a really beautiful night, they are dancing" (Damian can see ghost in canon)

After he finds out about the Cow and Goliath (he still have questions about Goliath) he made the decision not to be impressed by any strange animals in the house, assuming they all belonged to Damian. Do they have a chicken in the dining room? Damian's new pet. Is there a snake around the house? Damian's new pet. Is there an ancient squid-like being dressed as a bat walking around Gotham? Bruce should make a rule about what kind of animal Damian can adopt

Duke knows about the dead Robin club (Steph, Jason and Damian) and I die for some minutes (Tim), he made the decision of not die. Just he don't die. And somehow HE JUST CAN'T DIE.

in the future Duke (when Bruce retire and the kids just vibes) is called "Duke the Immortal" by his brothers

He actually still watches movies with Damian when the boy is in the town, Dick and Steph are the one who join them the most

One time Duke finds Jason's library (that house is HUGE), he still don't figure out who that library belong to but that place is so cozy, he really likes it

Also he and Jason are the street smarth duo

On a patrol they don't even need to use words to understand what the other wants to do, just a few slight signals and everything is solved

Even though he is in charge of patrol during the day, he may still be called "Robin" by the ghotamites (he has mixing feelings about this)

He is definitively not "the normal one", he enjoy the chaos in the same way of the others gremlins, he just never gets caught

Since he was adopted by Bruce, he has a list of heroes and celebrities he wants to meet

Like every Gotham child he admired Batman and Robin, but now that he knows them all... Duke has some regrets...

he realized from day one that neither Jason nor Damian has a warm body, but he never said it out loud for fear of pushing a button

Duke and Dick are the most emotionally intelligent in the house, Duke just don't bring this often

he has a sketchbook and likes to draw about his day, random doodles about the villian, some batshit thing and random things he saw on patrol

He is also, after Dick, who can take care of a kid with no problem

If he has some questions about some vigilant stuff (like the pit, owl people and others crazy stuff) he asked Alfred or Babs. The motive is: he doesn't trust that the others will give him the complete answer (after the "they're big evil" or "the things made boom near them" Duke was tired of asking and decided to go to Alfred to know the correct information)

He doesn't see Bruce as a father, more like a weird uncle, but he really bonds with the kids, he still doesn't know how to label this yet but he enjoys their company

DIRECTOES COMMENNTARY ON THE LAST PART OF YOUR CHALEX FIC

yes ma'am (i went back and forth SOOO many times on this ending i'll say it. except not really cuz i never actually changed it i just THOUGHT about changing it)

Together, they jumped into the ocean. [i was really worried about understanding where they were on the boat and them not getting like crushed by the boat etc but then i was like. ok. u just gotta write it. so i did!]

The shock of the water was complete. Alex, somehow, didn’t let go of Charles’ hand as he thrashed about [both a key point and something that i kept forgetting about (physically. annoying to write that they start holding hands when they already are!) while writing this whole last section is that alex and charles are trying very hard to hold onto each other. if you read the langwische article, there's a lot of focus on like...only the strongest/quickest survive. obv alex and charles are both fit, smarth, adult men, but this is also slightly in response to that. they do not want to get through this without the other. on a similar note, i considered having more of a scene where they were helping someone else but it just didn't end up fitting]. Salty water flooded his nose and he instinctively, idiotically, opened his eyes as they were immediately sucked under by a wave. It burned and burned and burned [i don't think i've been under salt water in maybe four years]. They barely had a chance to fill their lungs with air, kicking desperately to the surface, before being pulled under water again. He held onto Charles. He didn’t have anything except Charles, except the sky [oh i kind of like this. they really are getting BATTERED by waves and im just imagining how tight their hold on each other is].

They fought to the surface, still locked hand-in-hand. The ocean roared around them as they were pulled over and tossed about [us against the world!! us against fate!!]. Alex wrapped his arms completely around Charles [remember that Alex does not have a lifejacket here]. Charles’ lifejacket rode up to his ears. Alex kicked desperately, holding onto him. It felt as though they were floating there forever, his mouth full of water, the waves swelling and crashing [truly they have no sense about how long this has been happening. it is miserable! a whole sensory experience]. One moment, the ship filled his vision, in the next, the sea seemed to go on forever.

Alex’s eyes burned. His throat was ripped to pieces. He couldn’t feel his toes, his feet. His thighs ached as he kicked. Charles’ eyes were so big. Alex wondered if he was dragging him down. He wondered if he should let go [this is probably both literal and in their relationship. does alex have an inferiority complex when i write him? maybe. but also he's treading water and without him charles could float so much easier...].

Another wave crashed over them, pulled them under. Alex kicked, desperately, and he could feel Charles straining, doing the same. When they finally emerged, a calmer moment, empty life vests dotted the surface of the water [a lot of this is pulled from the langswiche article, in terms of what is happening in the water].

Alex coughed, a burning, hacking, salty thing. Alex tried to grab a life vest but couldn’t get it on [he is literally trying to tread water while put on a life jacket in a cold ocean with waves. of COURSE he couldn't get it on]. Charles’ nearly came up over his head, bobbing in the dark expanse [Charles lifejacket is a bit too big. reoccurring]. They kept their hands locked together as they gathered several with their two free arms, trying to pull together enough to float. The boat was a carcass across from them in the water, appearing and disappearing behind the waves that moved like mountains [okay so actually i was debating whether or not for them to literally run into a floating pad of bodies (like what actually happened) but i was like. that's TOO much. but it's what i was thinking about].

Alex and Charles clung to their lifejackets and each other, floating desperately. Everything stretched out around them, a million miserable possibilities [this is just me brainstorming in the chat. a million miserable fics!]. The water had been painfully cold when they entered but it was beginning to feel something near comfortable, despite the chatter of Alex’s jaw [hypothermia?? his body is shutting down. also trying to just get a sense of all the physical sensations]. He felt numb, physically, emotionally. They had been carried to the top of waves and then thrown down in a cascade of white spit [and the power of the natural world!!!]. Another person seemed to be swimming towards them until Alex realized that it was a carcass, a person floating face down, but he couldn’t bring himself to scream [I wanted this to be freaky but not TOO freaky].

Alex’s mouth was caked with salt. He clung to Charles. It felt like the only thing he could do [choice/fate etc].

The ship slid beneath the assault of the waves, their last glimpse of the Princess Diana [literally named the ship this just for the bookending. technically she is already dead cuz this is set...96?. it was that or the princess charlene #monaco]. Lifeboats, some upsidown, dotted the landscape. Rain poured down from the sky [I kept forgetting they were in a storm while this was happening so. had to bring it back]. Alex turned to Charles to say something, their faces close and soaked together, but he couldn’t get the words out, his lips cold next to Charles’ wet cheek [he's in love with him obv but i wanted to write this fic without saying it]. Alex’s scavenged lifejackets floated haphazardly from his limbs.

“Charles,” Alex said, holding onto him desperately, like a dying man in a film [just wanted to capture the desperation!! also lightly to reference titanic]. His jaw chattered with cold. He would hold onto Charles forever [L-O-V-E. he'd also let him go!]. The other man had gone quiet, but he was still moving, treading water, staying warm. There was a lifeboat, just over the next wave. They had to let go. They had to make it. “We have to swim." [this was the set ending from the very beginning -- this line, having to swim. basically having to let go and chance it. i did vascillate on adding more MANY times on doing a more defined ending -- either getting to a lifeboat and there's an injured girl screaming and alex is trying to help her but he can't feel his hands, or NOT getting to a lifeboat and floating apart until they couldn't see each other anymore and they're left in isolation. or getting to a lifeboat and alex is too weak to get in and he clings to the side until he can't anymore. and so on. and of course there was the -- do they die? and if they don't die, what happens? i think i fleshed out with you the long-distance version of events. and even with that there's a happy ever after and there's a break up and so on. i know what I think happens but i left the ending here intentionally because i wanted to let the reader take what they wanted from it. i usually have a sense of what the post-fic ending is (and of course that shapes how i write the whole thing) but i really do want to leave it open for the reader: to think they died, to think they survived, to imagine them happy. etc. give optimists a chance! idk if this is what you wanted but. yes.]

The other thing to be said on this end-of-the-fic is that it doubled in length from the original draft. so that's good, i guess. i did a LOT more editing/additions to this fic than i normally do, mostly because i really did NOT want to smack the reader with a surprise shipwreck at the end. i was very worried about that!! and i think it did turn out for the better.
