It's a very very popular post with a picture of a blue ringed octopus sitting in a person's hands. (Author's note: this is not wise)

Somewhere in the reblog chain I was asked how bad of an idea it was by a well meaning friend who knew what was about to happen.

And then the autism took over.

I left a MONSTER of a comment on that post that got into the type and toxicity of the octopus' venom and some other stuff. And then I went off the rails talking about another highly venomous marine animal, the cone snail.

And then I rambled for probably 15-20 paragraphs, accidentally citing a lot of hyperbolic and dubiously (read: NOT) sourced information that, in retrospect, turned out to be almost entirely straight up misinformation, but because it was presented with just enough credible-looking science in it, everyone, and I mean goddamn EVERYONE, LIKE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, took it at face value and loved it for its humorous tone and "educational value" despite being, apparently, mostly bullshit.

"Conus geographus is about 4-6 inches long and nature's equivalent of Avada Kedavra" was a particularly memorable line that will haunt me until the end of time.

To be clear: I absolutely DESPISE that post. It's almost certainly my most-seen post in my nearly 12 years on the site, even more than my viral crocodile and megafauna posts (both over 180k notes last I checked up on them). And I hate that the post I'm most known for is HIDEOUSLY riddled with misinformation. A lot of it was paraphrased from a 15 year old memory of a tv show (The Most Extreme) that I should have known better than to have trusted without independent research.

The snail post SUCKS. And I wish people would stop engaging with it. It's my greatest shame.

And I STILL get a large percentage of my new followers from that post, years later from an entirely different blog.

I don't WANT more people to see that post. I want that post to fade into obscurity like it deserves. I want it to go gentle into that good night and never see the light of day again.

But chances are you'll see it drifting around someday anyway, like an unheeded warning that haunts my derelict blog.

The snail post is not a post of honor. No highly esteemed facts were recorded here. Nothing of value is here. What was written is dangerous and repulsive. The danger is still present in your time, as it was in mine. The danger is to the mind. The form of the danger is humorously worded falsehoods. The danger is unleashed only if you read the post personally. The post is best left unread and unreblogged.

I don’t know why I wanted Hank to have a bird of prey.. Apparently this site said that bataleur eagles are very agile and they do silly aerial stuff in the sky.

Gives the vibe. Also in my bird book (Birds of the World), it states, "It flies low over the water with slow wingbeats, swooping to catch snails with its talons. (Wright)" It kind of reminds me of how San just swoops grunts in with his hook. Also this is from the MadCom wiki, "The battle hook is a meat hook attached to a wire to be used as a weapon. It is the main weapon of Sanford, who uses it as both a melee and a ranged weapon, as a stabbing tool or to pull enemies closer.”

In my bird book it states, "Cormorants are clumsy on land... (Wright)" this relates to the fact that Deimos fell off that platform in CHASE.fla in 1:04.

sane (and abled) ppl tend not to take mental illness nd disability very seriously. typically if they can make a joke about something (especially something that makes them uncomfortable) they will do it 10/10 times, because they don't care about us, only themselves/their own comfort. i tend not to tell people i'm schizophrenic because, well, it's rarely relevant to them, and also because they often react poorly; "you're not ACTUALLY psychotic, i know psychotic people, they kill people" "REALLY? i consider myself lucky to have never encountered this sanism, and i personally attribute it to never sharing my triggers (absolutely not victim blaming! it is not anyone's fault if they get harassed because they share their triggers!! sharing triggers =/= invitation for harassment, just talking about personal my experience) but even so, internet culture has a big problem with fake-claiming which i think plays into this sort of behavior a LOT. their perception of psychotics is... the things people say to me, above - we're violent, visibly psychotic, etc. even if someone is faking psychosis on the internet (which doesn't happen on purpose, i see misinformation leading to mis-self-diagnosis every once in a while but its not malicious or purposeful) it's still not justified to harass them or try to trigger them on purpose. it's not the funny joke they think it is, obviously. triggering people on purpose is evil /srs.

TLDR, i'm angry with you clownie. i'm sorry this happened to you, and every other person it's ever happened to. whether someone is "faking" psychosis or not, they still deserve safety and kindness. this sort of thing will probably continue to happen until non-psychotics start to take us seriously and listen to us.

I love that so much O H M Y, that’s so cute 💕 I’m thinking of getting a goldfish because I want a pet but I live in a college apartment so I don’t want to get anything big until I graduate. Do you have the fancy goldfish?

Yeah! It’s cause I couldn’t tell them apart when I got them, they were too little, so they were named collectively and then as they got old enough to become distinguishable, they got given their true names in order of the list. So we had Oliver, Henry, Marble and finally Dorothy.

I have long bodied fancy goldfish, shubinkin are of the single tail variety, so they are closer to common goldfish than double tails like oranda or ranchu goldfish, but they have long flowy fins that slow them down a little (and make them look very pretty).

A moment to step onto my goldfish soapbox but please, PLEASE make sure you do your research before you consider getting any pet but especially fish, and ESPECIALLY specifically Goldfish, because misinformation is massive around them. You might have already! I don’t know you, but incase you haven’t, Goldfish are hardy fish but they are complex to keep. They need social buddies (do not keep one alone), they need good filling food, they a LOT of cleaning and filtration, and they need SO MUCH SPACE. They are not a short term pet, they can live a decade on average or even longer, and you will be their vet unless you’re rich. I recommend the r/goldfish subreddit, they are honest and very clear about what’s required to keep these lovely animals.

I don’t know your college situation but it’s more than likely that you will not have the space for them. 3 fancy goldfish can need 50 gallons minimum, my boys have over 138 gallons and that’s only okay because I over filter their space. Consider you’re going to have to move with them and all the logistics that come with that. They’re also expensive. They eat a lot, their filter media needs replacing every now and then, their cleaning takes an hour each week.

If you’re dead set on a college pet, consider bugs! Jumping spiders, praying mantis and such live shorter lifespans and need far less space (and as such, cost less). If you’re really set on an aquatic pet, consider nano shrimp or snails. I have a planted tank full of hitchhiking snails that need almost no care most days, but are still lovely to watch over.

Hello!

So, my brother got me a typewriter for christmas. He is the hipster of the family, and has had one of his own for quite some time. Now, if you’re me, and have some admittedly hipster-ish tendencies yourself, you think that this is very cool and fun. I was ecstatic to receive a beautiful, functioning typewriter for christmas.

But what to do with it? Well, to start off with, I’ve been using my typewriter to write journal entries. The un-editable, stream-of-consciousness nature of typewriter writing makes it ideal for this purpose, with the bonus that the sheer fun of writing on the typewriter (click clack tip tap! ding! entertainment abounds) motivates me to actually write my journal entries. I’ve also decided to use my typewriter to type up snail mail letters to my siblings who live far away. I already wrote them letters to keep in touch, but lately I have gotten out of the habit. The typewriter will make my letters more aesthetically pleasing, as well as hopefully motivate me to write more regularly (again, it’s very fun). But what else can I do with it?

Well, who would I be if I didn’t immediately make a new tumblr sideblog upon finding a new interest? Not myself, that’s for sure. Introducing @typed-tumbles! (a tumble being anything you do on tumblr.com, of course. I have lovingly referred to being on tumblr as “tumbling” for quite some time now, and you’re not allowed to put the word “tumblr” in your username apparently.)

And what is the purpose of this brand new sideblog? Well, to typewrite tumblr, of course! Do you have a textpost that you just love and adore? A thought you feel needs to be more than just a textpost? A song lyric that haunts you? Immortalize it forever* and bring it into the real, physical world through the medium of typewriter! Send me the words you want typed, and I will type them up, maybe add a little border, doodle, or sticker, and then post a picture here on tumblr.com! 30 Days Wild, Days 6-8

Been pretty frazzled over the last few days, so didn’t get around to posting on Tumblr.

Anyway, day 6 was pretty frantic, so I only had time for a quick breather in the garden for my ‘wild’ activity for the day. Still, certainly wasn’t a waste: I saw that the Japanese Wisteria had flowered, and I spotted some moths:

Day 7 was a little slower, but quite overcast - I wasn’t able to spot much fluttering about on my walk in the garden. I did however spot that a lone strawberry plant had survived the neglect of our strawberry patch, and sported a little spot of foam on one of its leaves:

This is the home of the nymph stage of a froghopper, and here in the UK we call this foam ‘cuckoospit’ because it starts appearing at around the time you start to hear cuckoos in the spring. I recently saw that one of the UK tabloids was spreading misinformation about it being poisonous or something - it is completely and utterly harmless. It just provides a nice home for the little ‘spittlebug’ developing inside. I mean, I doubt it tastes very nice, but I’m not one to go around licking globs of foam off of plants. As I saw people pointing out on Twitter, it kind of sucks that misinformation about bugs is getting plastered across newspapers while we’re facing major species decline here in the UK.

Today, I spent quite a while out in the garden, working on building my bug hotel:

I’ll fully admit that I’m no carpenter, but I’m pretty proud of the effort anyway - it’s relatively sturdy given that it was made out of recycled wood from old pallets. I’m still looking for a few more materials to finish it out, but in the meantime it has:

- a ‘log’ pile for woodlice and centipedes - drilled wood and sawn bones for solitary bees - dry leaves and rotting wood for leaf-litter critters - soil for soil-dwelling critters - holey bricks and broken pots for amphibians, slugs and snails - horseshoe for good luck

I also spotted an Azure Damselfly hovering around the Mexican Orange Blossom plant - gotta love that vibrant blue colouring!

Are all pufferfish kinda hard to care for or is there a species that is a little easier on beginners? I would love to buy one one day but I want to be able to narrow it down so I can do proper research..

Hiya! So in short…yes and no. Some of it comes down to if you have experience as a fish keeper already! If you’re already solid on the nitrogen cycle and how to keep water parameters safe and clean, you have a leg up. I wouldn’t recommend puffs as a very first fish. Puffs are messssssyy and need heavy filtration and weekly water changes. They are generally more sensitive to ammonia build up and water quality than some hardier fish.

The other component to consider is the food you can provide. Can you offer a healthy array of crunchy foods (snails mostly, to wear down ever growing teeth. Mine get clams frequently), earthworms/bloodworms/black worms, crustaceans, and the other things puffs need based on their species?

Are you comfortable working with brackish or saltwater? Some of the commonly recommended beginner puffs either need brackish, or eventual full marine (like Burd, our GSP)

Most puffs do best in at least a 20 gal, but of course it varies from species to species.

The species *I* started with, and the ones I see recommended often are dwarf puffers (ten gal min), figure 8 puffers (20 gal min), and green spotted puffers (40 gal min). The last two fall into that salinity issue I mentioned above. Dwarf puffers are freshwater and should be kept in groups, if certain criteria is met (that’s newer info to me- I had been told keeping a singleton was okay, but apparently it’s really stressful for them. Fish keeping gets less black and white and more gray as I get older)

South American puffers are similar in size to GSPs and F8s, and very personable. They are also shoaling fish like I’ve recently learned about DPs, and need a group of at least 6…which means around a 55 gal tank. I love them but have stayed away from keeping them because of all the freshwater puffers, their teeth grow the fastest, even with crunchy foods. And tbh puffer dentistry is something you should be prepared for with a lot of these guys. I’ve had to sedate Burd and trim his teeth. It’s my least favorite thing, because honestly sedating them scares me, but it’s a responsibility I have to deal with that I signed up for when we brought him home.

There are a looooot of species tbh! We also have Louie the fahaka (freshwater, 180 gal) and Yamuel the Congo/potato puffer (freshwater, 20 gal- but Yamuel is spoiled and lives in a 45. Honestly he uses the space!). I wouldn’t recommend them as beginner puffs at all. There are other freshwater puffers out there too, but they tend to be lurkers and not as interactive.

I’ve found ThePufferForum dot com to be very helpful with articles and such. PufferfishEnthusiastsWorldwide also seems to have great info and LEGIT info. I’ve become friends with admins from both, a lady much older than I keeping puffs longer than I’ve been alive (Jeni/PufferPunk) and Macauley, who I don’t know as well but knows his fish info forward and back. I also have a friend Sabrina who runs BeFishy, another site that has reputable info. She has MANY species of freshwater puff and is a joy to talk to. I don’t know if Mari is still around, but Aquariadise also had some solid puffer care sheets.

It’s very easy to run into misinformation on these adorable fish, so thanks for asking and doing your research first! I’m happy to talk puff more once you have some specifics about size/salinity/food available/activity level! And talk deworming- most puffers are wild caught. 3. im sorry but the only distinguishing factors between literal gods and humans is that the gods are neon colors and thats it is so dumb?? like what about demi gods? how about exceptional mortals? like how can anyone compare psyche to a goddess then if shes not neon colored? also theres a ton of myths where gods are easily able to blend in with humans without changing anything because they are supposed to look like them, so how can they do that if humans are normal skin tones but the rest are neon?

4. I honestly feel like a big part of why LO is so bad is it's just way, WAY too long. The first few episodes were fast paced and kept you interested, but once it really pocked up on popularity you can see Rachel just started stretching everything out and dragged it back to a snail's pace. I'm all for a slow burn, but that shouldn't for the readers. If it was this long and there were months/years of progress in story I would excuse it, not at most a month in all this time. It's exhausting to read.

5. ok but why do even the humans in lo look so wonky? idk i think her more early abstractions with human forms was really so much better than this more realistic but also more cartoony look, it just doesnt mesh well. sure its technically cleaner looking but it starts to show the many flaws in the art than the previous look didn't. in the early look you could excuse it as coherent stylization, in this current look it just looks like rachel and her team either are very lazy, cant draw, or both.

6. also the disney hercules movie 1) never claims its myth accurate but also 2) its still just a fun movie?? LO in comparison is a self righteous slog that thinks its reinventing the wheel and is more legitimate than the actual texts all while being so wrong its not even"myth fanfic", its just a completely different story with greek names slapped on it for marketing. disney also had the good sense to not make the whole story about a dark topic, meanwhile LO is milking R//PE for a creepy romance.

7. ngl im even surprised rachel would even call hades anything zeus related because she seems so vindictive against anyone who isnt hades/persephone/hera that i would have thought she would make a point to say zeus would rather be be called "light hades" or w/e.

8. Omfg I just realized Hestia and Athena are an incestuous couple. Hestia is Hera's sister and Athena is Hera's and Zeus' daughter. Hestia is literally dating her niece. So the only non-stright couple in LO is incest. I just... how do fail this fucking badly at represenation?

Also, bc I know someone is gonna say it: Yes, incest was pretty much par for the course in Greek mythology, but in LO Rachel seems to actively want to avoid that particular aspect (which is understandable). Zeus and Persephone were orginally biological niece and uncle as well, since Persephone was the daughter of either Zeus or Poseidon and Demeter, but in LO this is retconned into Demeter making Persephone herself without a father being involved, making HxP still sketchy but not blood-related at least.

The Hestia and Athena-situation seems like a comedic mistake RS made. She hastily threw together two same-gender characters to counteract the accusations of homophobia and straightwashing and it just... backfired in the most hilarious possible way.

From OP: Athena and Hestia aren’t technically related in LO but it’s still really odd that Demeter, Hera, and Hestia come from Metis but have no relation at all to her other than she created them. Like, you’d think even Metis’ power would connect them in someway but I guess not. The three even used sisters to refer to each other (although, it was only retconned once and left in the other time) so I still their (Athena and Hestia’s) relationship weird.

9. This isnt just an LO thing but it's ironic Rachel is in that group of WT creators who went to art school and yet have some of the most subpar art i've ever seen, meanwhile the self-taught creators who went to school for medicine, engineering, comms, etc all have some of the most beautiful art i've seen in a webcomic. Anyway LO stans have to stop using the "she went to art school" excuse since it'd pretty clear she's not the only example where art degree =/= good art.

10. ok now im a bit sus about about the LO stats and tbh every other original bc i just saw an original creator say the actual numbers (esp for popular series) are all overinflated by porn and spam bots and webtoons wont get rid of them to make it look like they have more engagement and market them as more successful than they let on💀getting real tumblr will ban boobs but not the n//zi blogs energy from that info ngl
