I would love to see some of these past outfits re-created in any comics but new ones or just general winter themed outfits are fine too. Zeggy should most always be Santa though, unless joke calls for otherwise. BUT! Jokes trump everything– if it’s funny, I want it.
SPACE SCHOOL AND THE HOLIDAYS:
Because Winter-time has always been a time of hoilday-stuffs for lots of places and planets (especially those who were colonized by Earth or Nubia) Space School most often gives the whole school lots of time off in December from school-life.
All holidays are accepted to celebrated within the walls as long as everyone is being respectful of each other– as with most things in Space School. The School decorates mostly with lights and tries to stay away from leaning one way or the other. Students are allowed to decorate inside their dorms as they please, obviously.
Most students leave home to their respective planets for the holidays but some students and teachers stay at the school thru the whole month– sometimes celebrating together!
It’s an exciting and peaceful time for everyone~
Alkaline, Zeggy, and Toggy usually go home for the holidays (sometimes together) and Joe stays at the school. Sometimes Joe joins Toggy, Terrago, and Omnivera at their homes.
Dude, Maleena, and Vava either see their separate families alone or all stay together in their home near the school.
Dennis and Booker spend the holiday cooped up alone at Booker’s apartment avoiding everyone but each other.
ZEGGY AND HIS PLANET’S CULTURE:
Zeggy is canonically the most all about Christmas out of the whole group.
X-mas was an adopted holiday by Ollce when Earth colonized the planet and as such, it resembles Christmas as we known it with some key differences.
As far as the tree goes, it starts out as a sculpted pile of dirt resembling a tree or other X-mas object that is watered thru the month with various glowing mushrooms and other fun alien-glowy-bits appearing as it’s watered– so by the time Christmas rolls around the tree will have grown it’s own ornaments to light up the room!
You buy bags of seed/spores each year for the tree, these bags make great gifts and are often put in stockings!!!
Otherwise, a lot of the traditions are the same with either having different looking aesthetics. They do stockings, presents under the tree, and Santa– who instead of having a sleigh– instead rides a single giant mole (which is a creature from purple planet, I can provide reference for) and is of course, purple himself. He rides this mole– who is named Rudolf, around all the underground cities of Ollce delivering presents to all the kids.
Zeggy gets into the holiday spirit way too early and way too fast. He decorates his whole dorm room as well as wearing as much X-mas accessories as he’s allowed over his school uniform.
He’s the type of person to put everything non-Christmas away and replace it with Christmas themed things.
He absolutely spoils Alkaline with tons and tons and way too many gifts– all of which are extremely personalized.
Otherwise, he only buys presents for his parents/grandparents, Joe, Toggy, and gives cards to his teachers. Most of his efforts go towards Alkaline.
He eats a billion food, sings a billion songs, and is fucking obnoxious. It’s beautiful.
ALKALINE AND HIS TRADITIONS:
Alkaline likes Christmas just as much as everyone else and is definitely not as hype as Zeggy because who could match Zeggy’s energy, honestly. But, he definitely gets into the spirits! Enjoys the food, drink, songs, presents– etc.
Christmas on Earth is very similar to what we think of it now which some differences– many of which haven’t totally been decided upon so feel free to have some fun interpretations.
Christmas has most definitely become a non-religious holiday in most all senses on Earth. It’s more just about the aesthetics and being with family members, buying fits, eating food, etc.
Alkaline is either with Zeggy in his home on Ollce or has Zeggy over on Earth. He stays with his Mom and Sister, visiting extended family on Christmas Day for dinner.
Alkaline buys everyone he knows presents– even if it’s just something small!
I usually draw Alkaline as a reindeer because Alkaline with antlers is super cute.
JOE’S ‘CHRISTMAS’:
Christmas isn’t celebrated where Joe is from– they have other traditions. However; Christmas Day is actually Joe’s birthday– which he usually chooses to spend alone or with Dennis or Lorna (his girlfriend)– depending on the age.
As such, Joe doesn’t care too much about Christmas and see’s it more of just as “his birthday” but starts to appreciate the holiday more when Zeggy’s festive spirit invades him. And, he likes the presents.
I’m sure Zeggy and Joe have some special X-mas moments together with Zeggy trying to show Joe all about “The Christmas Spirit”!
TOGGY’S TRADITIONS:
On Nubia, they don’t really have a Christmas but rather a big celebration of a New Year like holiday where they begin the new calendar year.  Like Christmas, it’s a time to celebrate with family and loved ones.
Typically people travel long distances to spend the two days reunited with family, and everything shuts down.  The most important part of the festivities is to tell stories about the year–letting out stress or frustration while also reliving good moments and bonding with family members.
This is always accompanied by large amounts of alcoholic beverages, which are enjoyed by all ages.
Oftentimes everyone gets really smashed the first day and then sleeps it off the next.   Food varies from region to region but typically includes mostly unprocessed foods such as berries and vegetables, or dried lizard or fish jerky. As the festivities mark the beginning of the new year, many Nubians will dye their hair to a different color or get a new piercing around this time. Presents aren’t really a thing on Nubia, though it is common for parents and grandparents to give their children small sums of money to encourage them to have new adventures in the new year.
Toggy’s family is a bit more accustomed to Earth traditions though, and so he tries to buy his close friends gifts for “Christ-mass” but they are always strange and often food.
DUDE, MALEENA, VAVA:
The 3’s traditions are similar to Alkaline’s since they’re all from Earth– so not much to say there.
Dude spends a lot of time in an apron baking cookies, cakes, etc as presents for everyone he knows and Vava and Maleena definitely gain some weight this time of year.
They all get drunk a lot and laugh a lot and just have a good time together BEING A LIL FAMILY.
Dude always makes sure to exchange presents with students he’s helped thru the year; since he often takes troubled students under his wing.
DENNIS AND BOOKER:
Booker nicely decorates his apartment and spends a lot of time with Dennis on the couch eating food and talking. They frick a lot too.
It’s chill.
OMNIVERA AND TERRAGO:
As the resident “gays into roleplays”, Omnivera and Terrago do a lot of dressing up for X-mas.
There’s a lot of time Terrago will be with Toggy’s family with them– and so I’m sure Omnivera is there sometimes as well. In a billion, expensive outfits.
The two of them absolutely spoil each other and nobody else in presents– except for Toggy who they buy something for– OF COURSE.
NOTE ABOUT REX: Due to some wild stuff happening with the creator of Rex, Rex will no longer be appearing in Space School and therefore should not be appearing in any Guest Comics! Sorry!
AND PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO ADD NEW HEAD-CANONS OR INTERPRETATIONS FOR FUTURE HOLIDAYS!! REALLY, THIS STUFF IS JUST HERE TO GET YOU STARTED SO GO HAVE LOTS AND LOTS OF FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Conspicuous Media Consumption, 2020
it’s that time of year again! *saddest toot from the party horn*
for those of you just joining us: it’s a “consume a different content every week for 48 weeks of the year” challenge. for a longer explanation, check out last year’s write-up here, and as always, feel free to pop in and ask questions about any and all of this content.
(same disclaimer as last year too: content for this project ONLY here, and not certain...*looks at my billion Sad Cop Lady posts*...hyperfixations.)
(man remember when i was big into X-Men comics earlier this year? better times than these, if only because no one's discoursing about Emma Frost’s woobie/war criminal ratio anymore--her w/w, if you will)
(...i swear at one point i didn’t exclusively like platinum blondes but alas)
Bitter Root (comic, 1 issue finished 1/1/2020): still very cool on a basic concept level, but runs into the Image Comics problem of just not having enough content to keep my interest beyond that. part of that is on me, for picking it up again BEFORE the second arc rolled out, but the first five issues didn’t really follow (or resolve) any cohesive story either, so...meh.
Immortal Hulk (comic, 3 trades finished 1/17/2020): still not gonna be something i care deeply about (maybe one of Bruce’s Hulksonas dyed his hair???), but i do want to give kudos to Al Ewing for sheer consistency in terms of sustaining this level of quality storytelling month by month for more than two years now. working with the dense archive of the Hulk mythos and managing to make it interesting and thoughtful is impressive even if i personally would not expend the same effort.
Disco Elysium (game, finished 1/18/2020): honestly i should have twigged onto what this year was gonna be like when the third thing i drew from the barrel was pure uncut Eastern European flavored depression. i faintly recall people ragging on it for being pretentiously cynical, but i actually thought its core slid more towards idealism than people give it credit for. also gratified that i haven’t heard anything about Robert Kurvitz using slave labor to finish it, which is a thing we have to say about our video games now!!! fun.
Watchmen (TV, 7 episodes finished 1/27/2020): i am a fool who wants to believe in Damon Lindelof and I WAS RIGHT!!! honestly still cannot believe that he pulled off this highwire act with such deft aplomb. might be my favorite TV this year, which is a pretty high bar given how much TV i ended up watching.
On a Sunbeam (comic, finished 2/1/2020): Tillie Walden rightly deserves all the praise for inventive queer storytelling, but i will say that on reread--since i first read this as a webcomic--there ARE some issues with pacing here that clearly come from the foibles of its original intended medium. still just excellent, even if after some plot significant haircuts i was having trouble telling a few folks apart.
Lazarus (comic, 1 trade finished 2/8/2020): it’s so good and i want moooooorrrreee--though obviously Rucka and Lark have the right to take all the time they need. the newer longer issues work really well with the epic prestige drama vibes of the story! i’m into it.
The Good Place (TV, 4 seasons finished 2/18/2020): i’m gonna be super honest: i actually wasn’t a big fan of the finale, nor the last season as a whole. it felt like all of Eleanor’s flaws vanished for a majority of the season, and the Chidi-centric episode where they tried to give a legible justification for why he’s Like This was...i didn’t care for it. still, it’s so good and unique on the WHOLE that we’ll literally never get anything like this ever again, and that counts for a lot.
The Old Republic (game, finished 2/21/2020): it’s an MMO so it will never actually Be Finished so long as the servers aren’t shut down, but i caught up on the content i’d missed in the intervening months. Onslaught thus far has mostly been...kinda bland tbh; going back to Imps vs. Rebs after all the shakeups in the previous expansions feels like a waste.
High Road (album, finished 2/22/2020): someone should tell Kesha not to say that word!! otherwise i was very happy with this album, and happy FOR her even though we don’t know each other. being able to find joy again in the same genre of music you made while you were being horrifically exploited is very cool.
Young Justice (TV, 13 episodes finished 2/28/2020): given how much the middle stuff dragged--STOP KILLING YOUR HIJABI CHARACTER IN HORRIFIC WAYS--i was...actually kinda mad by how the end managed to stick the landing anyway. the day being saved by Vic’s self-acceptance and Violet’s sublime compassion was A+, and even the Brion/Tara switchup was a pleasant surprise, though it relied on me caring about Brion MUCH MORE than i actually did.
Manic (album, finished 2/29/2020): do people still care for/about Halsey? i feel like even That One Song that was on every tumblr gifset ever has kinda faded into obscurity at this point. this album was...okay. i feel like people give Halsey a pass for extremely obvious lyrical turns that they wouldn’t for other folks because of her subject material--which is fine. not really my cup of tea, but i also listened to lots of Relient K this year, so that’s probably a good thing.
Jade Empire (game, 3/10/2020): the only 3D-era Bioware game that didn’t franchise out, and for good fucking reason!!! the Orientalism and appropriation really haven’t aged well, and even beyond that the story was...standard Bioware faire. even my usual “my wife’s a bitch i love her” Bioware type didn’t do it for me, and i just ended up romancing no one. it did make me think a lot about what level of cultural borrowing is accepted nowadays, and why: people still look fondly at Avatar and talk about how ~accurate and respectful it was, for example, despite it being staffed almost entirely by white folks, and the Orientalism ALL OVER the monk class in DND is still fine for some reason.
Alif the Unseen (book, finished 3/31/2020): interesting to have read this AFTER reading The Bird King last year, because it highlights how the intervening years have shifted G. Willow Wilson’s thematic interest and improved her craft. i’m actually quite fond of how her characterization work is rougher here--Alif is extremely flawed to the point of being insufferable, but it makes his development by the end more satisfying. Dina is also just good and i love her
Baldur’s Gate (2 games, finished 5/31/2020): well, having finally finished the series i’m happy to say that it...still doesn’t really do it for me, sorry. any awesome story moments were overshadowed by the EXCRUCIATING inventory management system and the combat (i still don’t know what a THAC0 is and at this point i’m afraid to find out). these games crucially lack the Home Base that later Bioware games were so good about, and that (coupled with the huge cast of characters you can drop off and never see again) really hurts the intimacy for me. by the time we finally did get one it was the Hell Dimension in Throne of Bhaal, and i was just...trying to get through it. (yes, i did just say that about one of the most beloved expansions ever to one of the most beloved games ever.) THIS particular iteration of “my wife’s a bitch i love her” was very good, but the game wouldn’t let me romance her :(
The Underground Railroad (book, finished 6/19/2020): honestly what is there even left to say at this point! it was exactly as good as every critic on the planet said it was, even with my usual aversion to hype. draining and horrifying in turns but still insistent upon a future for Black folks.
Steven Universe (6 seasons and a mooooooviiieeee, finished 7/11/2020): yes, i DID finish the show and almost immediately begin a rewatch. this series is now one of my top five most formative things, and the amount of love and respect i have for it is incalculable. that said: i once again did not love how the central conflict of Future was resolved (just the resolution--i loved the finale just fine). for all of Steven’s breakdown was built up, resolving it with “EVERYONE HUG HIM UNTIL HE CRIES” felt...cheap, especially since up until this point the show had been so good about treating trauma and mental illness with the respect and nuance it deserves. it made me wish some of the earlier, less substantial episodes had been cut so we could spend more time at the end.
What It Is (comic, finished 8/19/2020): y’all i love Lynda Barry SO MUCH. for the longest time i was worried that One Hundred Demons was more a lightning in a bottle situation but every book of hers i pick up makes me feel obscure emotions i didn’t even realize existed. the compassionate way she’s able to describe her child self and how weird and fucked up she was (and still is) is honestly aspirational.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (TV, 5 seasons finished 9/26/2020): so here’s a reversal of what i’ve been complaining about with other shows: i was mostly lukewarm-to-warm about She-Ra, but the later seasons and the finale made me much more into it as a whole. more shows should improve in stakes and overall quality as they age tbh!! i still don’t actively love Catradora (my sole quibble with season 5 actually has to do with the way Adora kept backsliding as a character to make certain Plot/Relationship things happen), but i’m very happy for them nonetheless. i can certainly appreciate a show that will go for High Feeling over tight plot. dark horse standout moments: trees growing everywhere proving that Perfuma Was Right, and Hordak and Adora seeing each other--that weirdly intimate moment of recognition.
Fetch the Bolt Cutters (album, finished 10/7/2020): again i find myself not having much to say that no one else has said. it’s good! once again love it when an artist reclaims something they’d attached with negative affect (anxiety, depression, disordered eating) for better and brighter things.
Solutions and Other Problems (comic, finished 10/25/2020): i was very into Allie Brosh’s ambition with this book, which feels weird to say but i stand by it. it’s cool to see an artist try to make a new medium work for them instead of just sticking to what already works. not all the experimentation was 100% effective, but it was still delightful and occasionally devastating to read, so.
Legend of Zelda (3 games: Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Link Between Worlds, finished 11/1/2020): this was the third time i’d played Ocarina of Time, which made it the nice, comforting groove i settled into before Majora’s Mask blatted me in the face. i’m not usually a completionist Zelda person because...the gameplay in Zelda is bad, do not at me it just is, but i really felt like i HAD to be one for Majora’s Mask since the whole point is to get attached to the banalities of the town. i’m sure nobody’s surprised that i loved it, even if it gave me an existential crisis about how life goes on in the game for NPCs when you’re not there to save them from it, and there’s not enough time to save them all all the time (also not a surprise to anyone: Romani and Cremia gave Personal Feelings). Link Between Worlds...bad. not like in a “this is a bad story by every measurable gauge” way, but i was already struggling with the 2D playstyle shift enough that for the whole story to end with some “yes it’s v sad that Lorule is Like This but trying to steal Hyrule’s privilege is Even Worse Actually” noblesse oblige bullshit left a VERY poor taste in my mouth, this year of all years. i did audibly gasp when Ravio took off his mask, though. i’m currently playing Breath of the Wild in cautious increments; it’s the first time i’ve enjoyed early Zelda gameplay, but if they wanted fully voiced cutscenes i wish they got voice actors who...knew what words sound like.
folklore (album, finished 11/6/2020): my belief that Taylor Swift is Just Fine continues, i’m afraid. i LIKED this album, don’t get me wrong, and respect her constant drive to innovate, but i didn’t love it substantially more or less than any other Taylor Swift album. mostly i’m just tickled by how she thinks leaning into the indie aesthetic means borrowing Vita Sackville-West’s entire wardrobe, though i will admit to feeling Something when she swore in a song. i think it was like. savage vindication?? you go ahead and swear, Taylor Swift. you deserve it.
Shore (album, finished 11/19/2020): do people still care about the Fleet Foxes? i think there was some Drama with Josh Tillman a while back but i don’t remember where the discourse landed with who was being more problematic. it was nostalgic for me to listen to their new album--made me remember being an undergrad who exclusively listened to men who mumbled and played acoustic guitar all over again.
Star Wars (3 movies: original trilogy, finished 11/27/2020): there is So Much bad Star Wars these days that every time i rewatch the original trilogy i’m afraid that they will suddenly be bad, but guess what! they’re not. i love these children and their hot mess stories, i love that Lando doesn’t know how to say his best friend’s name. what stood out to me this time was the way Obi-Wan described the Force in A New Hope, which strongly implied that ANYONE can be Force Sensitive; that obviously faded with each subsequent movie, but part of me does wish they’d kept it.
X of Swords (comics, 22 issues finished 12/5/2020): i am enjoying Hickman’s X-lines!!! not so much here for the Grand Conspiracy or whatever, but the character work and highkey weirdness is fabulous--they FEEL like X-Men, despite all the shakeups in-universe. this crossover is a nice microcosm of all that: grandiloquently all over the place, but still full of cool standout moments and genuine hilarity. ILLYANA DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO SPELL MAGIC.
Fire Emblem (4 games: Sacred Stones, Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, Awakening, finished 12/14/2020): this was the thing that i was closest to giving up early on, but i ended up hyperfixating on it instead. that’s a credit to what the gameplay does to my lizard brain more than anything else, because the story and character writing is...insipid. it was very bizarre to witness this franchise blunder around with its animal-people racism allegory around the same time i was getting back into RWBY, and ITS animal-people racism allegory blunders. Awakening was the first time i felt anything for the franchise beyond “teehee red units disappear make exp bar go up and brain go ding,” so i’m excited for more mature storytelling in subsequent games (they MUST get better. they MUST). the child husbandry thing is...very bad tho, and Apotheosis being “challenging” entirely through the game changing all the rules is also bad.
once again no vidya games that came out this year--i’ll probably pick up Spiritfarer or Hades after the New Year, though (or maybe TLOU II! but probably not. sry Laura and Ashley). more TV and franchises this year, which made me feel In Touch with the Children but was also kinda exhausting. nothing was so egregiously terrible i dropped it without finishing! in a year like this that feels almost like an accomplishment

90: One night you wake up because you heard a noise. You turn on the light to find that you are surrounded by MUMMIES. The mummies aren’t really doing anything, they’re just standing around your bed. What do you do? Go back to sleep probably
91: You accidentally eat some radioactive vegetables. They were good, and what’s even cooler is that they endow you with the super-power of your choice! What is that power? Telekinesis?
92: You can re-live any point of time in your life. The time-span can only be a half-hour, though. What half-hour of your past would you like to experience again? Some time with my Aunt
93: You can erase any horrible experience from your past. What will it be? Onset of chronic illness
94: You have the opportunity to sleep with the music-celebrity of your choice. Who would it be? Florence Welch
95: You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere. You have to depart right now. Where are you gonna go? Florida for reasons
96: Do you have any relatives in jail? No
97: Have you ever thrown up in the car? Yes
98: Ever been on a plane? Yes
99: If the whole world were listening to you right now, what would you say? Be kind to one another. This world is a shitshow right now. Choose to be a good plot twist in it.
That was long, so congrats to anyone who actually sat through/read all that.

Have You Ever…
-
I’m listening to music right now. A friend came over to my house today. My mom is going back to school to get a degree. I’m going to see a movie this weekend. My high school has (had) a lot of pep rallies. I hate it when glue-sticks get all gross and goopy. I would love to be on the game show “Jeopardy!” I have seen and loved the movie “Pineapple Express.” My parents aren’t going to be home tonight. In one of my classes today, I got a pop quiz. Going to sporting events bores me. I love South Park. I have seen a play or musical on broadway. I know what “mugging it” means. The last thing I had to drink was water. I worked out today. I use shower gel to clean myself in the shower. I know someone who can speak/write in Japanese. I have taken a college class. Something embarrassing happened to me in a game of truth or dare. I know what “IHOP” stands for. I need to charge my cell. I am/was in the marching band. I’m wearing long sleeves right now. I’ve seen the movie “Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny.” It irritates me when people use incorrect spelling/grammar. I listen to Britney Spears. Currently, someone is avoiding me. I think Nair is the worst thing ever. I love Indian cuisine. My favorite flavor of Mentos is strawberry. It’s snowing outside. I get a ride from my parents to school. I absolutely hate where I live. My favorite band has a “the” in front of it. My fingers and toes get really cold all the time. I have an odd sense of humor. Breakfast cereal is the shit. When I was a kid, I took fruity vitamins every day. I ate a cookie today. I love ridiculously large purses/bags. It’s so annoying when people don’t text back. I wasn’t born in the same place that I live now. Someone in my family is in the military. I just want to throw my computer out the window. I’ve purchased something today. I count birds sitting on power lines. I should be doing something else right now. I’ve stayed in a hospital overnight before.

There are 4+ people in my house right now. I countdown to exciting events. I can’t live without my iPod. I go to the mall for more than twice a month. I have a photo album. I take random pictures 24/7 to put on my Myspace. I’m ¼ black. I have more than 5 pets. I don’t care what anyone thinks of me. I’m always confused. I can never wear all black. People say I look like my mom. I have big eyes. I have many different hairstyles. I’m not a morning person. I know at least one person with the name John. I download ringtones on my phone constantly. I sit in the back of all my classes. I live in NJ and have never been to the Jersey Shore. Big sunglasses are sexy. I’m definitely not a cat person. I have no life. I go to school with someone from my family. One of my friends looks like one of my cousins. I’m using a laptop. ^ I didn’t buy it myself; it was a gift. My most recent ex is single. I tend to overthink things a lot of the time. I’ve never cheated on anyone. I know a few people my age who have children. ^I’m not ready for children yet. My current hair color is my natural color. I’m feeling kind of guilty about something right now. One of my best friends is gay. I sometimes get messages from random people on Tumblr, telling me that I’m beautiful. ^I don’t really agree. I like the underwear I’m wearing; it’s pretty. Sometimes if I get too upset or stressed out, I start to feel ill. Someone of the opposite sex is on my mind. It took me months to get over my ex. I always use conditioner when I wash my hair. I’m blood-related to the last person I talked to. One of my best friends is engaged. If my ex phoned me now, I would be quite surprised. ^But I’d answer. I used to love “The Wizard of Oz”. I like 90s music. The last person I kissed has told me that they love me. ^But I don’t think they meant it. I haven’t been out drinking for ages. I had a really weird dream last night. My birthday is less than a month away. I really want cuddles; I wish someone would hug me. I want to see someone. ^But the person I want to see is too busy. I have lots of friends on Facebook that I don’t really talk to. I was sad when Whitney Houston died; I like her songs. I don’t really regret anything; there’s no point. I never drink milk. I hugged someone of the opposite sex last night. I hardly ever use Skype/video chat. When I checked Facebook this morning, I had some unread messages. I have a crush on the last person that Facebook messaged me. People say I look like my dad. I’ve had a panic attack before. People can always tell when I’m upset, even though I try not to show it. My sleeping patterns are kind of messed up. I’m currently wearing something black. I think Rihanna is pretty. Only a few of my friends use Tumblr. I don’t think I would ever go back to my ex. ^I’d still like to be friends though. My last beverage was hot. Today was a bit boring; I hope tomorrow is better.

We Do Be Vibing tho
This week we’re gonna be talking about playlists, and I thought I would get into my personal 5 song playlist that gets me in a good mood without fail every time. I really feel that a good playlist is a form of mental health. As I have previously talked about, music is extremely therapeutic for me an this playlist reflects that. As you will see, the songs on this playlist are all about happy vibes and they have that in common with each other. The main point I am trying to make her is that music is directly correlated to our brains and how we think and I made this playlist with that idea in mind.
I hope you enjoy
youtube
This playlist will start off with Anita, by Smino. Smino is one of my favorite artists recently and this song is just unparalleled wholesome energy. The tempo and swing to it along with Smino’s vocals make Anita THAT kind of song. It just grabs and and demands that you take as much joy from it as Smino is getting from it.
youtube
second we have an extremely early Mac Miller Song called Knock Knock. Y’all already know how I feel about Mac Miller, and how much he means to me. But this early song really is just joyous, he seems so happy in this song and its infectious. The background vocals make this song for me, and even at this young age the way he incorporates them into his sound is very impressive
youtube
Coming in at third is Shadow Man, A collaborative effort from  Noname, Smino, Saba and Phoelix. This song adds a slightly introspective side to this playlist after the unbridled joy that can be found in my first two songs. I actually don't remember how I found this song, but it has become one of my favorites, for me personally the song is made by how the vocals all are similar, but they aren’t copying each other, they all bring their independent style to the Shadowman and it’s what makes the song .
youtube
To keep with the more subdued vibe this is moving towards I decided to go with Chance the rappers song Cocoa Butter Kisses featuring TWISTA and Vic Mensa. This song is peak Chance, before he was worried about what he wanted to be instead of who he is. I promise I’m not shiting on him. But this song does really keep the good vibes coming, it really brings to mind you and your friends doing some nonsense with no worries at all. A simpler time
youtube
coming in at 5th is Kota the Friend’s and Bas’s collab BQE. My little brother actually put me on to Kota, i think we found thanks to Spotify? Anyway, his music routinely gets you out of whatever rut you’re in, the man is literally made of positive vibes. I was actually lucky enough to tune in on an Instagram live of Kota’s where he was showing us the backing horns on this song, which for me are so so so good. This Song is just about being happy and for a playlist thats based around that idea, this song is an easy pick.
So I have more songs but apparently Tumblr doesn’t allow more than five video attachments per post so I’ll just do this for now. Anyway, the goal of this playlist is to simply feel good, it can be used while you’re cooking, cleaning, running, walking your dog, literally whatever you want. These songs all keep me positive and they come from artists who are known to be positive people, so from them to me to you, i want to share these songs and maybe they’ll help you out as well.

Spoilers for Story of Minglan up to ep 17
Molan’s crush on Qi Heng is really reminding me of Mi Yin’s crush on Huang Xie in Legend of Mi Yue. It was so painfully obvious that Huang Xie was in love with Mi Yue and yet Mi Yin was so adamant about marrying him and the Empress Dowager indulged her. When the marriage didn’t work out, even the Emperor called out his mom for setting up a marriage that clearly wasn’t meant to be.
Same thing’s going on here. After the polo game, EVERYONE in town was gossiping about Qi Heng’s possible crush. There was not a single person who wouldn’t have thought that they had something going on. Lin Xiaoniang knew how much Molan liked Qi Heng and brought up the possibility to Sheng Hong. It was a bad idea for two reasons. One was that obviously it looked like Qi Heng liked Minglan. The other was because Qi Heng was of extremely high birth, and the only child/son of the very strict Pinging Junzhu. Molan wasn’t of low birth, but she wasn’t of high birth, and Qi Heng definitely didn’t like her enough to disregard that status gap and defy his mother. Sheng Hong even said that if Qi Heng was the woman-loving sort of guy with no regard for family image or duty, Molan might’ve had a chance, but because he was upright (and likely filial), he’d probably go with whatever his mother suggested, and his mother likely would not have chosen her.
There’s also the question of whether Molan actually likes Qi Heng. She told her mom that all she cared about in life was beating Hualan and Rulan (daughters of the legitimate wife). I’m starting to see that Molan probably likes his status more than him as a person. I know I should’ve seen that from the beginning, but I was still giving her the benefit of the doubt that maybe she did like him as a person.
Towards the end of the conversation between Lin Xiaoniang and Molan, Lin Xiaoning was trying to drive her towards considering the sixth young master of the Liang clan. At the polo game we saw that he liked her. At the time, Molan didn’t really care much about him, but she still tried to look good and reputable in front of him. So I don’t think she was totally averse to marrying him, but obviously marrying Qi Heng would’ve given her a bigger boost. In addition, Lin Xiaoning advised that if she just wanted to get a leg up on Hualan and Rulan, marrying the son of the Liang clan would already give her a leg up on Hualan. So I wonder if in the future episodes, we’ll see Molan slowly shifting gears.
By now, we see that Rulan is kind of immature and aimless. She isn’t ambitious about marrying a highborn like Molan is. In addition, her only goal in life is to anger Molan. So far in life, she hasn’t had to do much to “protect” herself because she was born of the legitimate wife. So she hasn’t had the massive inferiority complex that Molan has had, nor is she content with just following the rules like Minglan is.
I did think that Minglan being super good at polo was a bit...mary sue-ish? Not that it’s not allowed for a woman to both be smart and be good at sports. But it just kind of came out of nowhere. Still happy she won the heirloom back for Yanran though.
We’ve seen more of the relationship between Minglan and Qi Heng and I have some more thoughts about it. A few episodes ago, it seemed like Minglan was starting to warm up to Qi Heng, smiling when seeing him around and such. However, she’s grown cold to him again. My interpretation is that she liked him well enough before. As she said, he was kind and gave her presents before, so that’s why she sent him a present back in return.
Grandma Sheng had noticed Minglan and Qi Heng’s relationship and told her that she thought he was a little too high born, and that it would be hard on whoever marries him. Minglan is a rule follower and very filial. So I think she really took those words to heart. Plus, her mother’s dying wish was for her to survive. (And according to Grandma Sheng’s opinion, it would not be easy to survive in the Qi household) So I think that is why Minglan is now refusing Qi Heng’s advances.
Another reason that she’s refusing Qi Heng’s advances is that he’s going about things in an appropriate manner. As she said to Qi Heng, it’s a bigger tarnish on her reputation than Qi Heng’s reputation if she’s even suspected of having a relationship outside of marriage. Qi Heng keeps trying to see her in situations that wouldn’t be appropriate/too intimate, but he hadn’t given any thought to how it would reflect on Minglan. His mother probably would’ve seen Minglan as immoral and thus not see her as a worthy daughter-in-law. So Qi Heng actively seeking out Minglan was actually lowering her marriage chances.
I had seen gifsets on Tumblr about the fact that Qi Heng was just not getting the point. I don’t know if I’ve seen them all though. Like, I wonder how much further (if at all) Qi Heng is going to keep pursuing Minglan without heeding her words.
We saw in episode 17 that Gu Tingye had sought to propose to Yu Yanran. I think he saw that she was (1) a nice person and (2) probably not overly attached to her family and that was what made her a good candidate. Because Gu Tingye himself had poor relations with his family, I think he knew it would be difficult to get most families to want to marry off their daughters to him. So he decided to seek someone like him, someone who was technically of noble birth, but probably didn’t care to marry her off to someone of questionable background. So far, the Yu family has refused to see Gu Tingye. I wonder if there’s any reason other than the fact that Gu Tingye doesn’t have the best background.
I was also told that the “romance” aspect (i.e. Gu Tingye and Minglan getting together) happens fairly soon in the show. So I kind of hope that we’re going to get past that soon. I just want to see the pining and will they/won’t they over with.
There are two possible reasons as to why Chang Momo doesn’t like Zhu Manniang. One is that she looks down on Zhu Manniang’s prior occupation as an entertainer. The other reason is probably that she thought Zhu Manniang had “tricked” Gu Tingye into having kids with her to tie him down. I kind of feel like Chang Momo is being a bit too hard on Zhu Manniang. She seems to be trying her best but Chang Momo isn’t very encouraging.
Chang Momo was really happy about Gu Tingye planning to propose to Yu Yanran. We see that she does treat Gu Tingye like a son and he treats her like a mother/grandmother. But she’s always very cautious about Gu Tingye getting too close with Zhu Manniang, and is very adamant that Zhu Manniang will have a servant-like status in the household after Gu Tingye does marry a legitimate wife.
The servants in Minglan’s “office” are an interesting story. We see that there are a couple from Daniangzi’s household, a couple from Xiaoniangzi’s household, and a couple from Grandma Sheng’s household. There is some drama there. I’ll be honest, I haven’t been able to tell the servants apart because there were so many being introduced in such a short time. All I can figure out is that there is one/two who keep breaking things in the house and even though Minglan’s servants castigate them, Minglan lets them go. Perhaps this is Minglan’s way of yielding to the other two households to avoid conflict.
Speaking of the servants, when they were brought over to serve Minglan, she had this really cute smile on. She obviously seemed very gracious, but I also think there’s a hint of Minglan putting on a face of appreciation, and deciding to deal with it later. Like, if she refused the servants, that would draw more suspicion to her. So she would just accept them graciously now because it was the easiest thing to do, and then she would figure out how to use them later on. Though Grandma Sheng sent over her own servants soon afterwards, who would then “control” those servants due to their difference in status (i.e. they were all servants, but servants of the grandmother would rank above servants of the wives).
I’m starting to see why this show is so special. The selling point is that the story is about commoners in their everyday struggles. There is no competition for the throne, or for military power, or for land. Instead, the ambitions of each character are very personal and specific. Molan cares about status and power, Rulan only cares about angering Molan, and Minglan just wants to get by. The characters aren’t all hyperfocused on ambition and survival, which is often the case in most palace dramas.
The fact that this very fleshed out world with practical costumes is set outside of the palace is also very attractive. As common folk myself, it’s fun to think about what life would be like if I had been born in the Song Dynasty instead. The overall look of the show is charming, and I can see why this aspect of the show is so lauded.

Are you attracted to the last person that kissed you? Yeah, of course. What did you do yesterday? I spent the morning hungover because I drank the night before, but I had to be in class by 10 AM so I had no choice but to drive to school. My classes were thankfully pretty chill, and the most random thing that happened was my prof making us take a speed typing test in the middle of our class lol. Otherwise, it was a normal school day. Something you really want right now? More moneyyyy. I blew most of it last Wednesday when me and my girlfriend had drinks up in Marco Polo. Hotels obviously jack up their prices on everything, and alcohol is no exception so what I’d pay for a cocktail in my school’s area got quadrupled in Marco Polo. But I had a loooot of fun that night, so I can’t say I regret it even though I lost most of my allowance. If you could seek revenge on someone would you? [continued from yesterday because I just had suuuch a hectic week] Like I’ve said, the idea of revenge is something I daydream about just to feel internally satisfied, but I never feel the need to act on it. How long have you liked the person you like? Six, maybe even seven years.
Are you happy with the way things are going? For the most part. I could go with less worry/anxiety, but I mean I can’t say I’m miserable. Would you ever get a tattoo? Only if I feel like the time is right, which is a FAR cry from “get tattoos of all the things you love”-era Robyn lmao. Do you think you will be in a relationship 3 months from now? Yes. April is my birth month, and I’d hate to be single by then lol. What plans do you have for tomorrow? I finally have my rest day tomorrow, which I’m fuuuucking stoked about. It’s been such a busy busy week and I’m just so relieved that all I have to do tomorrow is sit and lounge around. Has a friendship ended recently that you wish had not? Not really. I kinda cut off friendships with two guys because they annoyed me over some issue, but the thing is they’re part of our high school group so I can’t avoid them forever – I see them when we have reunions, but I don’t mingle with them. What are you listening to right now? I can hear the electric fan whirring in front of me but in my head Simmer by Hayley Williams is playing as loud as ever. Do you and your last ex hate each other? No. What are you afraid of? I hate uncertainty the most, but some other things I’m afraid of are failing in general, videos that make me stressed like footage of collapsing/fainting people or racist people making tirades on public transport, flying cockroaches, sharp objects, and fire. When was the last time you were sick? Some time last year, I got a fever for like two hours but I was totally fine after. But the last time I was SICK sick was sometime in 2017 – but even that was only an overnight thing. I don’t remember the last time I was sick for over a day. Do you tend to waste a lot of money? LMAOOO don’t even remind me. I literally have a single P50 bill left in my wallet – that’s less than a dollar to ya. Do you have trust issues? No, not at all. Do you think this year will be better than last? I’m genuinely unsure, and I’d rather not guess or mull over it. 2020 is going to be a year of so much change – graduating college, getting my first job, maybe moving out for the first time?, not knowing if my girlfriend is going to pursue a master’s abroad, what that means for us, etc. Big things are waiting, and I HATE the uncertainty of it all. I take surveys to forget, so please don’t remind me of things I go here to forget, haha. Have you ever regretted kissing someone? No. Are you a jealous person? I can be, but like I’m not obsessed with being jealous. When was the last time you got a haircut? 2018. I desperately need a dramatic haircut. Do you know anyone that smokes weed? Yeah I know people who’ve told me about it, but I’m sure there are more people I know that haven’t told me they do weed. Who is the last person you rode in a car with? I was with Luisa and Hannah and for the first time in a long time, I wasn’t the one driving! Do you look more like your mom or your dad? I ask people this and they always tell me I’m a perfect mix. Apparently the top half of my face looks like my dad, and the bottom half is all my mom. Are there any stressful situations in your life? Yep a little bit yep yep yep. If you were caught cheating would you fess up? If I was already caught, I’d be incredibly stupid to still deny it so yeah, I’d confess. The last time you honestly felt broken? Maybe Monday? Idk, I cried pretty hard that day, harder than I normally would. What do you really want right now? I want this stupid internet speed to be faster because I need to send emails ASAP, and I need some good fucking food. I am not the happiest camper right now lmao. Best thing about the last person you chatted on facebook? He’s literally the most reliable dude ever. I can always depend on him to help me out no matter how last-minute it is. Best thing about the last person you talked to in person? She’s generous. When was the last time you shaved your legs? Yesterday. Is there someone you wish you were closer to? At this point, not really. I’m happy with my circle and there haven’t been new people who entered my life recently. Have any addictions? Nope. Are you anything like your siblings? We’re all reserved, but then again out of all the three of us I’m still the biggest extrovert and I’m also probably the one who finds it easy to blend in with most groups. But yeah, we all definitely have a layer of extreme shyness in us. We’re also never upfront about our feelings, so when we cry we do it in the privacy of our own rooms, or if we’re upset we rant about it to our own friends. Have you ever had a stalker? I don’t think so. Have you ever received an injury from a hook up? LOL what? No I haven’t. That sounds wild though. What did you last eat? A brownie and a sip of coffee. What was the best concert you have been to? PARAMORE. UGH. THEY HAVE THE BEST CONCERTS. I’ve seen them twice and I plan to see them three, four, and the next bajillion times. Paramore forever <3 Who is the last person you hugged? I’m not 100% sure. Maybe Laurice. Do you have any good friends of the opposite sex? I have a couple, yeah. Are you keeping anything from your best friend(s) now? This survey is a big secret for one, lmao. Where do you get your clothes? It depends. I shop everywhere so I get my clothes from a variety of places. They’re mostly from independent shops/stalls that pop up once in a while at malls, though. Do you have a secret you've never told anyone? [continued YET AGAIN from last night because I am just one big exhausted bean] Again, this Tumblr is a pretty big secret. Is there one person in your life that can always make you smile? There are several people who meet this category. Would you rather sleep alone or with someone? I like sleeping with someone only if they’re my significant other. Otherwise, I like my own space when I sleep. Have you ever lived with a girlfriend/boyfriend? No, I haven’t. When was the last time something bothered you? I am bothered at this moment, hence the survey-taking haha. Who was the first male you talked to today? My dog. But if he doesn’t count, it was Andrew. Are you completely over your past relationships? I’ve only been with one person. Do you get attached to people easily? No, it only ever happens with select people. But when I get attached, it happens hard. Are you currently looking forward to anything? Uhhhh sure. I’m dreading most of this week but my high school’s annual school fair is happening this Friday and Saturday and that’s the only thing I’m excited for. Do you believe in love? Yes. Let's be honest, have you ever been played by someone? Can’t say I have. Have you ever played someone? Yes, this I’ve done. I still feel bad about it occasionally but I’m sure the person has long gotten past it. What is currently on your mind? How sad I am and that I have to focus on this survey so I can be distracted. Would it hurt seeing the last person you kissed, kissing someone else? Of course. How many piercings have you had in your life? Just two. Who else is in the room with you? I’m the only one in the dining room but my brother is also here downstairs. Have you ever been beside someone while they were throwing up? [It’s 12 hours later. This is the absolute slowest I’ve ever worked on a survey lmao] No, it was always the other way around HAHAHA Did you eat breakfast today? I haven’t yet but I’m not feeling hungry so I might just settle for a cup of coffee. When was the last time you cried? A few minutes ago watching a clip from an NBA game having a moment of silence for Kobe Bryant. I was never into basketball but we DID have a copy of NBA Live 2003, and whenever I played it I always used the Lakers team so that I got to play as either Shaq or Kobe, so I’m sad and shocked, to say the least. Do you like tea? Just sugary iced tea. None of that herbal stuff. When was the last time you took a nap? Yesterday afternoon. What song is stuck in your head? Simmer, by Hayley Williams. As has been the case in the last four days. Do you have a TV in your room? I used to, but my brother would always be the one using it to play his video games so I eventually just gave it to him. Have you ever broken a bone? Nope. And I’m always extra careful so that I never have to go through such an injury. Have you ever had stitches? ^ Same answer. Are you wearing a sweatshirt? No...it’s starting to get warmer for sweatshirts now :( Have you taken a shower in the last 24 hours? Yes. Are there things in your life that you'll never be able to get over? Of course. There’s been a fair share of deaths, betrayals, abusive family shit that I’ve had to go through and that aren’t easy to forget. Can you remember who you liked this time last year? Yes. What's one physical flaw you'd like to fix about yourself? Straightening my teeth. What do you do when you're feeling extremely nervous? Uh it depends on whatever helps me at that time. I’d pace around, fiddle with my eyebrows, breathe deeply, shake my hands rapidly, bite my nails, etc. Do you have a hard time letting go? Yes. Do you think someone is thinking about you right now? I doubt it. What do you plan on doing now? Making my cup of coffee and taking another survey to make up for the embarassment that is taking three days of finishing this one lmao.

Oh geez. I was on a carousel in Italy once, that was awesome.
93: You can erase any horrible experience from your past. What will it be?
The one that gave me depression idk which one it was but can it go away?
94: You have the opportunity to sleep with the music-celebrity of your choice. Who would it be?
Ehh, I don’t want that. Like... I don’t know those people, they could be Awful in bed or just in general too. Like I need an emotional bond first and they don’t even know me and I only know the persona they show to the public. Plus it could potentially ruin the music for me later on, it’d be weird, no thank you.
95: You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere. You have to depart right now. Where are you gonna go?
UUUUUHHHHH I DUNNO Lyon cause Grenoble doesn’t have an airport. Well, actually my sister isn’t in Grenoble right now. Hm well if I grab my card before I go then I can just find a hotel there until she comes home.

99: If the whole world were listening to you right now, what would you say?
Someone help me, I am so so so incredibly in need of help, please. Please. Thank you.

Creator name (other platform- please specify): I am also So-Shiny-So-Chrome on Tumblr.  Witness me interviewing myself.
Q: Why the Mad Max Fandom?
A: The Mad Max franchise has a few of my favourite things (I should write this song...) like: deserts, obsessively detailed world building, post-apocalyptic setting, women being gritty, weird religions, and characters that hit the right combination of badass and broken.  You have all this angst in the characters, but then there's this great sense of fun with how extra everything is.  I'm a real sucker for deep social and philosophical concepts hidden behind explosions and cool fight scenes.  Fury Road also came out at just the right time for me.  I was just really ripe for so many of the themes and aesthetic components.
Q: What do you think are some defining aspects of your work? Do you have a style? Recurrent themes?
A: Stylistically, I like to change things up.  I kind of oscillate between long, descriptive sentences and almost obnoxiously pithy ones.  I break rules, start sentences with 'but' and 'and;' I use commas like breath marks, especially in dialogue to give it the rhythm I hear in my head.  I also world build to an obsessive extent.
A frequent one for me is being female in the wasteland: relationships between women; portrayals of women finding themselves and their strengths; and the trade-offs women make to keep themselves safe.  I also work a lot with religion in the wastes.  Most fic have their own themes that come from the characters and their emotional struggles.  For example, “Stranded” is about Furiosa being stuck between her past and future selves.  “Blood and Breath” deals with a lot of different themes, but one of the more prominent ones the struggles that come with being in an unexpected and sometimes undesired position of power; it’s another theme that pops up rather frequently.
Q: Which of your works was the most fun to create? The most difficult? Which is your most popular? Most successful? Your favourite overall?
A: I really enjoyed writing “Stranded.”  It was just so different from anything I'd written for the fandom before.  For me personally, it's still a good read.
The most difficult was “7000 Days,” both because I was new at fanfic in general but also because both parts I and II are really raw, dark, and personal. I needed to take breaks while I was writing it and shift gears to something lighter.  It also doesn't get much reader attention, probably because it is so heavy, and that always makes writing harder for me.  This one just felt like I was shouting into the void for a lot of it.
Currently "Daughters of the New World" is a struggle for me.  The premise is a bit out there, what with Wonder Woman coming to town and being romantically attached to K.T. Concannon.  Diana is a difficult character for me because she is complex but seems simple, and the whole thing is from the perspective of Furiosa who just doesn't get her. I worry that I've bit off more than I can chew because I want to explore some heavy stuff.
My most popular overall is “Blood and Breath,” which I kind of get because it scratches a lot of different itches.  “Little Mate is my most popular short, which surprises me because it definitely is not in my comfort zone.  It's cute; it's fluffy.  It's just not something I would seek out to read.
My most successful might be “Crux.”  Being a remix, I had set parameters to follow, which I find creatively useful.  The author of the original was also quite please with it, so: success!
I think the fic I have written that most closely aligns with my personal tastes right now is “Wasteland Jukebox.”  It probably helps that it is also my most recent.  It bounces from angsty to fun to bittersweet to campy and back again multiple times over, all the while showing really intimate character portrates.
Q: How do you like your wasteland? Gritty? Hopeful? Campy? Soft? Why?
A: All of the above.  I like my wasteland realistic where everything hurts, but some things are still funny, and big wins are possible, but they come at a cost.  Even when I'm filling my wasteland with ghosts and vampires, I still want it to feel very grounded in reality and populated with realistically complex people.   This especially applies to medical stuff; if I'm going to write about something I want to portray it accurately and realistically within the context of the story.   All the injuries, diseases, and treatments are based off of real things.
Q: Walk us through your creative process from idea to finished product. What's your prefered environment for creating? How do you get through rough patches?
A: It depends.  Sometimes I can just crank something out.  These are typically shorter, more atmospheric pieces.  More often I have one or more specific scenes, and the rest of the fic grows off of them.  Like for “Daughters of the New World,” it's Diana riding on top of a bonnet/hood while Furiosa is trying to shoot out the window, and they keep getting in each other's way.  None of my longer fic is written in chronological order.  For “Blood and Breath,” I have scenes that I first drafted probably two years ago, but I still haven't gotten to them in fic.  Most of my first drafts are dialogue.  Then on second pass I add or replace those words with body language.
Getting to the finished product is the hardest part for me, especially when I already have all the major parts of the puzzle figured out, and I just have to polish them up. I also tend to have that writers' curse where I think of what to write when I can't possibly write it, like in the shower or a work meeting.  I'm also very much the type of writer where I live off of interaction with my readers.  I love it when people question the choices I make in my fics. I don't really have a preferred environment for writing, but I know I can't do it if there's the slightest chance anyone near me might be reading over my shoulder.  I just get paranoid.  If I'm on an airplane, I have to wait for my neighbors to fall asleep.
Q: What (if any) music do you listen to for help getting those creative juices flowing?
A: Lots. Too many to list.  I make playlists for each of my major projects.  I listen to them mostly when I'm not writing so the stories stay in the back of my mind.  They're all public on Spotify so just ask if you want a link.
Q: What is your biggest challenge as a creator?
A: Finishing my long projects, especially when there isn't much reader response.  I can lose interest quickly, but I want to be reliable; if I know someone is looking forward to updates on my fic, I will keep writing for that one person.
Q: How have you grown as a creator through your participation in the Mad Max Fandom? How has your work changed? Have you learned anything about yourself?
A: I think I've found a writing voice for myself.  My early work tends to have a lot more of a throw shit against a wall and see what sticks approach.  In my working with Furiosa especially I've definitely found some of myself in her.  For example, a few interviews about Fury Road have stated that Furiosa avoids learning names to protect herself from emotional pain when people move on, die, betray her, she betray them, etc.  I realised that I do that do.  Of course, my situations aren't quite as extreme. :)
Q: Which character do you relate to the most, and how does that affect your approach to that character? Is someone else your favourite to portray? How has your understanding of these characters grown through portraying them?
A: Right now I relate most to Furiosa, and that answer shouldn't surprise anyone, but initially I felt more like Toast.  I thought Furiosa was really cool, but I didn't feel worthy to compare myself to her.  It took me a few months to go - fuck it, I want to be her for Halloween.  Of course, that wasn't enough.  I wanted her backstory.  I wanted to spend more time in the costume, and make the costume better.  I choreographed a dance about her so I could wear the costume more, but I really needed to get to know her as a person to really feel comfortable taking on her persona, not to mention I needed make the dance make sense in character (”She Used to Dance” is that fic.)  The more I got to know her, the more I took apart all her insecurities and neroses, the more I found her in me and myself in her.
I relate to her being a woman caught in the middle of a  lot of things: being both young and old, hero and villain, masculine and feminine, strong and weak... The list goes on.  I relate to how she has spent most of her adult life in a predominantly male environment, and how that manifests as difficulty relating to other women like in the, "Everything hurts," exchange with Angharad.
My favourite character to portray is whomever I'm currently writing once I find their voice.  I enjoy the process of getting to know these people.  Dag's POV is especially refreshing to write after working with characters who are super guarded like Max and Furiosa. I can just ramble and take weird turns in the narration.  I need to write more of her.   Capable is the hardest for me of the franchise ones I've tried.
Q: Do you ever self-insert, even accidentally?
A: I'm full aware of it.  There is a bit in 7000 Days Part II where it's mentioned in memory that a the Vuvalini get ahold of some vaccines from Melbourne, which in my chronology falls significantly later than other cities.  Furiosa is a little kid, and she is so determined to not get the shot that a couple of adults have to hold her down.  This was me.  This is literally a story from my childhood.  Mostly little things like that.  There's also the bit about Furiosa reading "Dune;" I fucking love "Dune," and her being trapped in the Vault while she's reading it, how can she not imagine a giant worm coming out of the sand and eating the whole damn place?   On a larger scale, I use fic to explore themes and issues that are going through my head.
Q: Do you have any favourite relationships to portray? What interests you about them?
A: Well, we've already established that I have a bit of a crush on Furiosa.  I ship her with Max in my main continuity and with Valkyrie and Angharad in a couple of side projects.  I'm interested in Furiosa with Max because of how they relate to each other.  Yes, they are both terribly fucked up people, and who knows if the relationship would actually work, but that tension is a big part of the interest for me.  It took me about six months in the fandom to open up to the possibility of there ever being any kind of romantic or sexual relationship between them, and in my chronology that's about the amount of time it takes for them to move from one time plautonic snuggle buddies to romantic/sexual partners. I do most of my writing in that time frame. The fact that they massively respect each other definitely is something that shouldn't be squandered, and I think they recognise that. I don't headcanon either of them as asexual (though my Furiosa is demi), and I think that the best shot they have for a happy partnership is with each other.  They are both fundamentally good people who don't think they are worthy of kindness, let alone an actual relationship, but they both look at the other and see all the wonderful things about that person.  I'm interested in how they navigate this dynamic and how they eventually come to the decision that even if it does end badly, which it probably will, it's worth trying.  Everything hurts, right? Easy relationships are boring anyway.
Q: How does your work for the fandom change how you look at the source material?
A: Sometimes I watch with specific details in mind, like to see the details of a prop or costume piece.  Other times I'll watch something and see a detail I forgot but suddenly becomes an inspiration for a fic.  For example, the Crazy Diamond chapter in “Wasteland Jukebox” came from me rewatching the first movie and seeing Jessie with her saxophone.
Q: Do you prefer to create in one defined chronology or do your works stand alone? Why or why not?
A: Most of my stories are in the same chronology.  Setting change AUs and “Crux” are the exceptions.  Part of the fun for me is keeping tracker of the chronology.  I don't expect my readers to work that hard though; every story stands on it's own.
Q: To break or not to break canon? Why?
A: I do not break canon; I bend it to my will.  Setting changes are an exception of course. I just work better within the structure that canon provides. If I change canon, I change one thing and only allow other changes that are a result of that first change.  I develop and justify my interpretations of canon so that I find enough wiggle room for my headcanons to comfortably coexist with it.  Where canon contradicts itself, e.g. video game vs. comics, I chose my preferred version.  I even take little blurbs from interviews and try to work them in as lore.
Q: Share some headcanons.
A: Pretty much all my fic are based around headcanons.  There are many,  many of them.  Some are the premises for fic while others are big reveals.  Others are back story or missed scenes or just what was going on in someone's head. Here's one that's not a spoiler and doesn't make too many fic appearances:very Rockatanskyup name.  Max's original last name was Patansky, and Jessie's was Rockwell.   They're parents were millennials; of course they were raised to value gender equality :)
Q: If you work with OCs walk us through your process for creating them. Who are some of your favourites?
A: I rarely work with real OCs for anything other than side characters, but I often use characters who have little (Miss Giddy) to no screen time (K.T., Mary) or no canon name (Promise the Milker).  They effectively become like OCs.  K.T. had the most of a design process because all I had to go on were her name and Vuvalini affiliation.  I made her black to bring more racial diversity to my 7000 Days cast, and I made her American because I wanted to have an instory explanation of Furiosa's accent not being Australian. Warboy Kai exists because I felt Furiosa needed an ally among the War Boys cuz fuck if the Imperator pumps her own gas. He will eventually become the History Man we see in the comics so he's still not a true OC. My true OCs follow the same process: 1) identify a logical gap or role that needs filling, 2) establish the character using canon reference points, 3) fill in the character's appearance, personality, etc. not already established by 1) or 2).
Q: If you create original works, how do those compare to your fan works?
A: I'm not doing originals at the moment, but when I look back now at what I was doing pre-Fury Road, I realise just how fannish it all is.  We're talking many thousands of words of world building, character development, angst, and pining.  So yeah, not much different.
Q: Who are some works by other creators inside and outside of the fandom that have influenced your work?
A: I learned a lot about working with themes in different sub plots from "Wishbone."  Seriously, if you've never seen that shit go check it out.  A cute doggo dresses up and tells stories from classic literature while his human learns similar lessons in the "real world."
I consciously avoided other fic when I first started writing because I didn't want to accidentally injest headcanons and not be able to remember where I got them.  Once I found the story I wanted to tell, I dove into the wealth the fandom had to offer.  I owe @sacrificethemtothesquid for paving  the way in making these characters as gross and gritty in fic as real humans.  I owe @lurkinghistoric and @fuckyeahisawthat for warming me up to Maxiosa first through their less and then through their more explicit fic.  And of course @youkaiyume for drawing the art that inspired many of those fic.  Really the whole of the Smuttyartfic group got me writing smut again after a good decade away from it.
Q: What advice can you give someone who is struggling to make their own works more interesting, compelling, cohesive, etc.?
A: I'm gonna go with the good ole, "Write what you know; so know interesting things."  Show off your passion and the depth of your knowledge.
Q: Have you visited or do you plan to visit Australia, Wasteland Weekend, or other Mad Max place?
A: Yes to all of the above.  I really like deserts and tend to pick them for my vacation spots.   I stopped in Sydney on my way to New Zealand a few years back, but I didn't get to go outback; crossing the Nullibor is in my to-do list.  If anyone plans a fandom-cation count me in. I've been to Wasteland Weekend twice and intend to be back, but probably not this year because this summer I will be going on a camping safari through Namibia.  Don't worry, there will be pictures.  And yes, I will be asking our guide obnoxious questions.
Q: Tell us about a current WIP or planned projectThis is my year of finishing projects.  I'm also signed up for Fandom Trumps Hate.  Bid on my listing and you can choose my next project.
Thank you @livia-lerynn

alright, you know what
about two weeks ago maybe by now, i made a post about how i’ve recently hit 200 followers and i’d like to do a q&a again, and even with a reblog from someone more ~*popular*~ than me, and multiple reblogs once a day for a few days by myself, i didn’t get a single fucking question. not one. earlier today i posted two pictures of myself where i felt pretty (i’ve since deleted them) and nobody i actually know of liked it and i got asked by a stranger who doesn’t even follow me if i had any nsfw pictures. i don’t get asks anymore, i don’t get shit. and that tells me that, you may be following me, but you aren’t connecting with me. and i feel that. i get on tumblr and i don’t feel like i’m friends with fucking anybody. and i did that. i know i did that. 9/10 times i let my fear of rejection and embarrassing myself overcome my desire to talk to people, so i don’t do it, or i let it fizzle out and we go our own ways and we don’t become friends. 1/10 times i actually function as a human being and make a connection or at least something that sticks a little.
so here, below the cut, is a comprehensive (loosely) list of things that i like, in no particular order at all, besides tickling, because apparently both sides of this need a little help connecting on any front.
scooby-doo
beetlejuice
the addams family
the sims
the mcu
classic disney animations; my favorites are dumbo, the great mouse detective, the rescuers, sleeping beauty, and oliver and company (it’s old enough that i consider it in the classic category)
~modern disney animations too; my favorites are treasure fucking planet, coco, and... i’m a sap, beauty and the beast. rise of the guardians too even though it isn’t disney.
musicals; i can’t pick a favorite just fucking ask me, but i don’t know a lot of newer ones honestly
empire records
the greatest showman still
cats (i mean the animals but i also like the show even though it is Weird As Hell)
my cat in particular
alice in wonderland
stranger things
space jam
tsum tsums
elvira, mistress of the dark
dice
kiki’s delivery service and specifically jiji things
winnie the pooh i don’t even fucking care i LOVE HIM AND ALL OF HIS FRIENDS
silly hats
playdoh
interesting earrings
exploring libraries or big bookstores
true crime mysteries; my favorite youtuber for this is georgia marie, bless her. i also watch bella fiori and kendall rae
fictional mysteries too
i have a kind of fascination with jack the ripper and with the lizzie borden case
shipwrecks! i don’t know why but shipwrecks fascinate me! why did they go down? all the stories that went with them!
i once read a novel that was told as a series of letters, or journal entries, by people on the titanic, including the iceberg and it was THE absolute saddest book i have ever read in my life. like, obviously i knew what was coming, but i got attached to the characters, the letters made them alive and it was just like... NO. NO I DON’T WANT THEM TO DIE. I KNOW THEY’RE GOING TO BUT THEY CAN’T. and it was awful. i had to put it down and cry.
cryptozoology

classic rock. pretty big on queen lately. i like tom petty and the heartbreakers. i like joan jett and the blackhearts.
i just... like rock. across the board. i like the offspring. i like some rage against the machine songs. acdc on the radio makes me happy. def leppard on the radio makes me happy. beartooth, starset, powerman 5000, as long as it’s got a good beat and good stuff going on behind the vocals then i’m gonna be happy. i’m way more into the guitars and the bass and everything going on instrumentally than i am vocally, honestly. the whole big guitar solo to van halen’s “you really got me” and then that bassline that comes in, that bassline is sexy. it’s so simple but i LIKE it.
anyway music as a whole gets me right in the heart and can lift me up when i am at my literal worst point
it’s hard for me to name a favorite or specific bands that i like because there’s so many and i’m not really picky about it.

history; i watch a lot of expedition unknown and mysteries at the museum, and sometimes i’ll watch a free documentary on youtube if it catches my attention. last weekend i explained the donner party to my boyfriend. just.. on a whim. because i’d just watched a thing on it and he said he didn’t really know what it was. i’m that person.
OH I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THIS BACK AROUND TRUE CRIME BUT I READ A BOOK ABOUT H.H. HOLMES AND HIS MURDER CASTLE AND THE CHICAGO WORLD’S FAIR. it was by erik larson, i believe. larsen? i could google this. devil in the white city. there’s been talks to make it a movie. it’s a good read though i will admit i skipped a lot of the fair parts because i was there for the murder.
i also read a book about the lusitania by the same author and i was like ohhh my goooood what. it got a little boring sometimes, i had to push myself to keep going, but i would read dead wake again.

speaking of pools i love swimming ... but i suck at it, i just like boppin’ along in a pool

summer
there is nothing like being out in the middle of nowhere in summer when the evening starts to fall and the sky is dark, dark blue and there’s a sea of shimmering lightning bugs out over a field. it’s beautiful. it’s peaceful.
there’s nothing like sitting outside on a calm spring night and listening to the spring peepers (they’re frogs) either.
if you couldn’t tell, i live in the middle of nowhere. i have to find enjoyment in the little things.
campfires
dancing around said campfire, you cannot have a campfire without good music. this is when a lot of my classic rock education came to pass.
elephants
my favorite books are the abhorsen trilogy by garth nix, tied with the serpent’s shadow by mercedes lackey
i am trying to get into comic books by way of the youtube channel comicstorian. they break comic books down for you and read them aloud with the images, altered slightly to avoid copyright strikes (and that’s all made very clear, it’s not done sketchily), and it’s been really easy for someone like me who doesn’t just have a comics store close (and i would otherwise continue on as i have been, forgetting to ever look for them on the internet). i listened to injustice 1 and 2, and they covered the game. i’m actively following scooby apocalypse, and there was some teen titans stuff i went all the way through up until now. i don’t think it’s finished yet from what i remember.
i love museums
candles
i actually kind of collect tea sets
i also have a collection of sand art bottles AND IF I’M EVER AT A FESTIVAL OR A FAIR WHERE THERE IS A SAND ART STAND YOU CAN BET I AM GOING TO MAKE ONE
yugioh duels; i’m definitely just a novice and it’s just a fun pastime my friends got me into when they found their giant binders of cards again
i’m not actually that big on pokemon, i don’t know a lot of them but it’s still fun and i know some. but i did love pokemon go when my friends still played it (don’t really have time anymore, and it kept crashing way too badly on one of their phones anymore anytime they tried to join a raid and it just wasn’t fun as a group then)
i don’t have any but i like the ~look of crystals and would like to have some, not for my own aesthetic but i just... like having pretty things!
listening to the rain
how the air smells (at least where i live) after a long rain and everything is just cleansed
depression has stopped me from writing for a long time but, in my heart, writing has always been something that has touched me ever since i knew how to do it and could put my stories down on paper instead of having to just talk about them... so i’m going to include that here
root beer floats
hotdogs
hard dip ice cream (if you don’t know what hard dip means... as my boyfriend didn’t... it means ice cream that you have to use a scoop with, not soft serve)
soft serve’s good too tho don’t get me wrong
strawberry milkshakes
this isn’t even stuff that anyone would need to know on this site to befriend me at this point, nobody’s gonna message me like HEY I READ YOU LIKE STRAWBERRY MILKSHAKES ME FUCKING TOO
you’re cool if you do that lmao
so bad they’re good creature features from the 50s and 60s
the old godzilla movies
i like the moon more than the stars, but i like them too
flower crowns
bouncy balls
original skittles
this has gone on way too long, nobody is reading this, your mom’s a hoe, goodnight
no she’s not, i’m sorry, if you got this far then i hope your mom is a nice person

Get to Know Me Tag
wow guess who’s actually doing this in a relatively timely manner for a change...
The always friendly @angelfacehobi was nice enough to tag me to do this~! Putting under a cut for those who don’t care to read these things.
Rules: Answer 30 questions then tag blogs you would like to know better.
Nicknames: Dani (...but please don’t call me by this...I’m only comfortable with my family addressing me by my nickname).
Gender: Female.
Star sign: Taurus.
Height: 5′3″.
Time: 1:56 am...I should go to sleep...
Birthday: May 2nd.
Favorite bands: BTS, Pentatonix, and Coldplay.
Favorite solo artists: Don’t really follow many solo artists.
Song stuck in my head: For once I don’t currently have one.
Last movie watched: Um...I wasn’t fully watching it but Cinderella (the live action one).
Last show watched: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (one of the few animes I’m making a point to rewatch this month).
When did I create my blog: This sideblog was created in June last year.
What do I post: Primarily BTS (with posts that are mainly hyung line). But other girl groups I like and loosely follow. Been posting more random/personal things lately.
Last thing googled: Dose of Colors Desi x Katy collection (snagged some lip products before they sold out thank goodness ;3;).
Do you have other blogs: Yup...six...I have my main (which I sporadically post), a music sideblog (which tbh I should delete since I never update), a relationship/romance sideblog (privated), one for nsfw stuff (privated), and two more that are backup urls.
Do you get asks: Nope. The only thing that’s been constant in the eight years I’ve spent on here XD
Why did you choose your URL: Honestly my previous one, which was lowkey-yoonseok, felt too long and it felt kinda obvious I was not very lowkey about adoring Yoonseok/Sope. So I wanted to make it more about my bias. However, I did want to make it something I could also kinda pair with my main (because I genuinely thought people might be able to put two and two together and figure out if I reblog enough from them and also try to engage somewhat they can tell it’s me...because I know not many people care to read the about me sections...).
Following: 113...I don’t like having an overly cluttered dash especially with content I’m bound to see reposted 10+ times. Plus a good portion of these blogs I’ve followed for an extremely long time and aren’t exactly active anymore but I still follow in the offhand chance they come back. I really don’t know how anyone can handle following more than 125...like...how...?
Followers: Tumblr thinks it is 142, but excluding the ghost follows the real count is 132.
Favorite colors: Blue. Specifically Cerulean.
Average hours of sleep: Ranges from four and half to nine hours.
Lucky number: 7, 13, and 16.
Instruments: Um, I haven’t played either of them in a ridiculously long time but recorder and clarinet. Not sure how playable my clarinet is and if the corks for attaching it are any good...
What am I wearing: T-Shirt merch from someone I’m subscribed to on Twitch and shorts.
How many blankets I sleep with: Two. I have a faux fur one for texture and the other isn’t technically a weighted one, but I use it for that purpose.
Dream job: Don’t have one.
Dream trip: ...I’d love to visit Seattle...this probably sounds really bland compared to people who aspire to travel outside of their country.
Favorite food: Pizza. Specifically Dion’s pepperoni pizza (it’s been at least 7 years since I last had it and the closest location is like...6 hours away in Lubbock ;o;).
Nationality: American.
Favorite song now: Eh...don’t exactly have a current fave but I’ll just default to “So Far Away” version with Jin and Jungkook considering I’ve had the hour long loop on YouTube playing when I go to sleep.
People I tag: @bibwi @softwandy @kae-popx @floral-hobi @h-hixtape @bfjhs @brightjoon @mochisobi  (which y’all don’t have to do if you don’t want to~)

Ensemble Stars Review: Pretty idols, pretty cards. There’s no going back.
Tumblr media
Ensemble Stars (あんさんぶるスターズ!) is a Japanese card collecting mobile game made by Happy Elements. The goal of the game is very simple: collect the cards of your favourite characters through events and gachas. As the only producer student at Yumenosaki Private Academy, you try to complete lessons by choosing the right responses and unlock stories that reveal the humorous and dramatic relationships between each idol unit and members.
I started playing Ensemble Stars in late December 2016 because a friend recommended it to me. I didn’t know much about the game except two characters’ names (Adonis and Izumi). It was an idol game with no rhythm game aspect, and they did a crossover with Yume100 (which I played). Other than that, I was going in blindly; I didn’t even know how to play properly. But right now, I can confidently say that this game really changed my life. I’m not sure if it is for the better… but it greatly increased my addiction for mobile games.
Tumblr media
Main gameplay: 4/5 ♥♥♥♥♡
The gameplay for Ensemble Stars is simple, straightforward, and very addictive. Although it is only available in Japanese, it is quite easy to navigate through when you get the hang of it. You train the characters by tapping on the coloured squares to collect gems, which increase their skills: Dance (red), Vocals (blue), and Performance (yellow). Each lesson and event have different missions you need to complete. For example, you may need to get ‘High Luck’ throughout the lesson, collect a hundred of each coloured gem, or get a double ‘Fever’. After you accomplish each mission and unlock each story, you win a diamond.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned before, you must choose responses to complete lessons and events. None of the answers are right or wrong, they just trigger a different reaction from the character (image above). So, if Adonis says, “So transfer student and the others in the middle of training... I am too. I like music. I find singing very fun. What about transfer student?” You can either reply or “singing by myself is…” or “I like music too.” Depending on which you choose, the Adonis will either respond positively and raise your ‘fever’ or give you a small red gem. Or he will respond negatively and lower your luck. The outcome is random, which can be frustrating but the challenge makes it fun. I usually pick randomly since I can’t read Japanese very well, but I still feel accomplished when I get a 100% complete. Although, these responses aren’t critical in unlocking the stories, they are important when completing lesson missions and collecting gems. With the gems, you can complete the idol road to bloom characters to make them stronger, and collect special outfits and background images (image below).
Tumblr media
Sadly, Ensemble Stars is only available via the Japanese app store and Google play store. However, if you are really dedicated, there are many tutorials on signing up for a Japanese iTunes account or downloading a separate Android Game Platform that provides easy access to many popular Asian games. I would recommend looking at Ensemble Stars! Wiki since they also provide other tutorials for beginners and offer basic information about each character, idol unit, and event/gacha details and translations. Enstars Tumblr is also a great place to find helpful tutorials, beautiful fan art, and information on events, updates, and notifications. I use to really struggle with completing the beginner lessons since I couldn’t read what the missions were or where to press to get a reward. So, these tutorials and other people in the Ensemble Stars community really helped me feel welcome and understand the best and most effective way to play and have fun.
However, once I started understanding how to play, I became obsessed. It’s no surprise that the game is free to play and has in-game currency. By now, it’s also not surprising that I have no self-control and spent even more money on Ensemble Stars than I did on Yume100 and Mystic Messenger… combined. I’ve spent a little over $1,300 on in-game purchases and official merchandise and visual books… trust me, I am not proud. Most of my money went to gachas, which I explained before are randomized, lottery-like functions that are in most Japanese mobile games.
Tumblr media
(This card ruined my life…I’ll never forgive you Koga…just kidding I still love you)
Most recently, the five star gacha card was Koga (my favourite character) and I tried so hard to get him (above image). I just kept buying more and more diamonds until I could at least get one copy of him… but sadly he didn’t show up at all. I think I spent $300 on that one gacha alone. I pulled a ten character gacha fifteen times and still he didn’t show up! Now, I feel forever haunted by that card and that I will never get it. But, for now, I really hope that next time it doesn’t happen again.
Overall, the gameplay for Ensemble Stars is quite simple and straightforward. Other aspects of the game include special events and gachas, revival events, and Lives. Luckily, there are plenty of tutorials and helpful people in the community on Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit that can explain those in detail and give fantastic advice. I think the only bad thing about this game is the special events and gachas because they can be difficult, especially if your cards aren’t high ranking or strong enough. However, that doesn’t make the game less fun, just a bit frustrating and nerve wracking. I don’t regret any purchases I made… yet. I just really hope my luck is better in future events and gachas.
Tumblr media
Characters: 5/5 ♥♥♥♥♥
There are a total of thirty-nine male characters in Ensemble Stars, including teachers, who each have unique personalities and qualities that make them loveable and relatable. As I began playing and getting to know the characters more, I started to feel emotionally attached to some of them based on their appearance and profiles alone. Like Shinobu (the right photo above), he is like a little brother who cries a lot but works hard to become a hero and a ninja. He is quite silly and weird but I think he is extremely precious because of his innocence and smile. At first, I didn’t like some of the characters because I thought they were annoying or not my cup-of-tea. But after getting to know them, I realized that they were quite cute and just a bit eccentric. I can’t hate any of the characters, they’re all so sweet.
Like any mobile game, I am immediately drawn to the artwork and characters. The artwork for Ensemble Stars is really cute but still shows a lot of details. The style is clean and simple but still very pretty. Since the cards are ranked by number of stars, the four-star and five-star cards have the most detail especially after blooming. You can tell the difference even in terms of how dynamic the poses are and accessories they’re wearing (photos below).
Tumblr media
(Left: Unbloomed card, Right: Bloomed card)
Besides the design, I love the characters’ unique personalities and voices. Each voice actor brings a unique sound that matches the character’s personality and is easily recognizable. Many of the voice actors are famous in other mobile games or animes such as Eguchi Takuya (Hibiki Wataru), Kaji Yuki (Isara Mao), and Hosoya Yoshimasa (Hokuto Hidaka). As for my favourites, most of them have deeper voices that are smooth and comforting or have medium/higher voices that are more bubbly and happy. Kakihara Tetsuya (Akehoshi Subaru), Oosuka Jun (Kagehira Mika), and Nitta Anjyu (Sengoku Shinobu) have cute and energetic voices. The characters are also usually very cheerful and want to get along with everyone. Within the fandom, it is popular to call certain characters your “son” because you feel like a proud mom watching them grow up. It’s quite odd but that’s generally how I feel with these characters. When I listen to these voices, I feel more encouraged to smile and not worry about troublesome things in my life.
In contrast, Hatano Wataru (Otogari Adonis) and Kamio Shinichiro (Kiryu Kuro) have lower romantic voices. I feel warm and comforted listening to their calm and husky voices. If I was scared or stressed, I think their voices would reassure me that things were going to be okay. Similarly, Ono Yuki (Oogami Koga) and Hosogai Kei (Hakaze Kaoru) can have relatively low soothing voices when they speak seriously. But due to their personalities Koga usually speaks with a very rough and informal tone, while Kaoru speaks with a flirtatious and mischievous tone. I like these voices because of the range the voice actors have. Although, I really like when Koga speaks like a delinquent, his voice changes to a shyer voice when he’s embarrassed. While Kaoru is the opposite. His voice is normally light and silvery, but when he speaks slowly in a lower romantic tone it makes me feel a bit embarrassed.
Tumblr media
Although Ensemble Stars doesn’t have a lot of fully voiced story chapters in the game, they do have character voice clips and idol unit songs. The unit songs are very well produced and catchy. Each suit the style of music that each idol group represents: punk rock, traditional Japanese, cute pop, etc. My favourite songs are: Knight’s “Fight for Judge” and “Silent Oath”, UNDEAD’s “DESTRUCTION ROAD” and “Melody in the Dark”, and Akatsuki’s “百花繚乱、紅月夜 (Wild Blooming Flowers, Crimson Coloured Moon’s Night)” and “花燈の恋文 (Love Letter of the Brilliance of Cherry Blossoms).” I like listening to these songs when I do design work to keep me motivated and awake.
Tumblr media
Story: 4/5 ♥♥♥♥♡
The overall story for Ensemble Stars is quite complicated and dramatic. As the player, you are a transfer student so you do not know much about the history and rivalry with each idol unit and members. The game heavily relies on the story and continues to build it through events and gachas. Usually, relationships between characters, backstories, or explanations slowly reveal themselves in event and gacha stories. For example, recently a new character named Madara entered the game. Since he is new and the only solo idol, his event explained his past relationship with some of the members of Ryuuseitai. Although the event didn’t explain too much about the other characters’ backstories like fans were hoping for, it did reveal some facts that we could debate and speculate about within the fandom. As I mentioned before, the Ensemble Stars! Wiki provides all the translations of the main, sub story, and past events and gachas. I haven’t read all the translations yet since there are quite a lot, but I’m sure when I do, I will create an even stronger emotional connection towards the characters I love.
Tumblr media
Overall: 4.33/5 ♥♥♥♥♡
Ensemble Stars is an easy, fun, and addicting game that has easily become my newest obsession. The artwork is amazing, the characters are interesting and the storyline is worth reading. Although, it can be difficult to collect gems and cards since it is all based on luck and how often you play, I would still recommend it to beginners if they want a challenge and are determined enough to get their favourite character’s cards. Again, I don’t regret starting this game or throwing my money at it because it is an experience and an adventure I’m willing to make sacrifices for. I’ve created such a strong emotional connection with the characters that I wouldn’t want to just stop and throw it away.

Album Discussion- Billy Believe
My dumbass only left an hour to write a blog entry on the day I’m trying to dedicate to doing album discussions, before I have to go to work. So this might be a tad more hurried than standard.
Tumblr media
Stuck in the Sound are a French rock band that have been around for like, 15 years? And in that time they’ve solidly not really broken into the mainstream, possibly outside of France itself (They do perform in English, to be clear). They’re probably best known for their music videos- “Let’s Go”, as an example, has over 100 million views, and while none of the others really match that they’re clearly where a lot of effort is going.
But we aren’t talking about the videos, we’re talking about the music, and in this case, the 2019 album Billy Believe. No I don’t know what that refers to. Anyway!
This album opens on Forever Days, and as usual, we want to figure out what the deal is from that opener. It’s kind of, a very minor-keyed love song, I think? There’s something that feels a little off about some of the background instrumentation, even as the main of it is relatively standard. If I’m honest, as an opener this song leaves something to be desired. It’s solidly ok, not really demonstrating the potential I know the band has- particularly in the vocal space. It’s a mid fucking song, man.
youtube
Serious, on the other hand, is one of my more liked songs on the album. It’s not an especially technical one, but it’s just got this excellent vibe- very chill, very uplifting, would recommend. The band clearly thought this one was worth the time, as well, because this one did get a video. As opposed to the name, the song is not especially serious- its airy, and I’m not just saying that because the video is on a plane. It’s got room.
Third song up is See You Again, a bit chunkier with that lower, groovier line. I do like the melody this is based around, that little tempo shift or whatever you call it. Where one part of it is like twice as quick as the rest? It’s been way too long since I studied music theory, I’m clearly unqualified for this. Aside from that, it’s largely inoffensive, nothing particularly special. Better than Forever Days, but that’s not the biggest bar if you ask me.
Our next song is Break Up, which feels very early 10’s alt-pop. Something like Magic! or F.U.N. would have put up. A bit more low-key than those, which I think is for the best, because those tracks often ended up relentlessly irritating. This song is very loose, somewhat quiet, but not really pensive in the way I’d like it to be. I’d also be interested in the song, like, going somewhere, but it’s perfectly content to remain in its vibe, which is fffffiine. It’s fine. Song’s fine.

In case you couldn’t tell by the youtube link, Alright is another single, and it’s extremely tense. This song is actually just loads of fun. It’s cycle of tense and frantic build up and energy as it grows to a climax, as the lyrics yell “just remember! That your life is shit!” and it just cuts back into this gorgeous little piano line and it’s really chill and pretty for a while. It’s this duality that really sells the song, and it helps that both areas would be really solid on their own. This is probably the best track on the album, if you ask me.
youtube
Wait, this has a video? I don’t remember this song. The Rules feels like the “rock bottom” song from some kinda rock opera, which I don’t know if the album has really earned, but I guess it isn’t trying to. Seriously, though, this is the song for when you’re pulling your face-heel turn by cheating on your partner. I hope that never ends up being relevant in my life.
Actually, this would make a great Bond theme. This song’s pretty solid, all things considered.
Unlovable is a depression mood. This song feels the level of discordant that those sorts of emotions usually tend to. And then I read the lyrics and, uh, what the fuck is going on here. Theres a bunch of music references, and it’s clear that both people are shitcunts, and I don’t even know. I’m pretty sure the awkward grammar is just for the meter of the song, not because English isn’t their first language- they’ve only been writing songs in it for over a decade. Back to the song, though, It’s kinda grungey? Which I think is a step back to their roots, considering (and I haven’t listened to it so don’t quote me) it’s called Nevermind the living dead. It’s a bit of an odd one, but it’s fine.
youtube
So, Petit chat, is…a chiptune? At least, that’s how it opens, a pretty fun way to open a rock song, to be honest. It’s pretty short, too, but it’s a real fun track. Honestly, I think this is what Stuck in the Sound is best at, these sort of frenetic rock songs with some fun instrumentation and a fair bit of yelling. It’s a solid track!
For the curious, petit chat is like, a term of endearment, it’s like “darling”, but also very close to the substantially more literal ma petite chatte, which means pussy. And not the pawed kind.
The next song, Action, has a featured vocalist by the name of Holybrune, who I’ve never heard of outside of this. Honestly, this song feels kinda weak even with the added vocals. It feels like it’s trying to be sort of dramatic/quiet in different parts, but the energetic bits are just lacking. I feel like there’s almost an instrument missing here or something, the gap doesn’t feel intentional. Almost unfinished? I don’t know. It’s pretty meh.
youtube
The next song is actually the first single from the album, Vegan Porn Food, and it is one I could never possibly recommend to someone based on name alone. Which is a shame because the song fucks. I know I said before that high-energy was the band’s strong suit, but this is a grungy, murky delight. It only gets more strained and desperate as it goes, even with the brief moments of levity in there. It’s a shockingly dark song for the band, and the album in general, in a way I genuinely did not expect- I remember when this single came out, being the first from the album at all, and I was really excited to hear a whole album like this. For better or worse, Billy Believe is not that- and I guess this would probably overstay its welcome at 11 tracks length.
Our penultimate track is Radioactive God Explosion, which opens by yelling its title just so you know its serious. It’s pretty apocalyptic, but also doesn’t seem to take itself very seriously, and to be fair, I’m not about to take a song named Radioactive God Explosion seriously either, we already had that song. Much like See You Again, there are parts of this I really like, and the remainder of it is passable enough that it makes the grade. The riff is lots of fun, and frankly yelling RADIOACTIVE GOD EXPLOSION!! OH NO OH NO is fun as fuck. This is the second least listened to track on the album (on spotify), and I don’t think it deserves that.
(The final track, Riots, also has a video. In fact I hadn’t seen it, it’s their most recent one. But, Tumblr’s only letting me attach 5 Youtube vids to this post, so you’re going to have to find it yourself. It’s REALLY good! And also pretty gay happy pride month folks. Break Up also had a video but I completely forgot about it oops)
Riots is the closer, and it feels very final. As RGE was the silly apocalypse, this one genuinely feels like your end of the world sorta shit. It’s regretful, and defiant, and pained, and honestly really good. I don’t even remember having heard this song prior to today, and I kinda regret that. It’s great! Like I feel like I’ve missed a lot by not having had this song in the old playlist for this whole time. Shit man, new fave.
And that’s the lot of them! Overall, Billy Believe kind of confirmed what I had feared about Stuck in the Sound in general- ultimately they are a singles band more than an album band, and that’s not a great place to be in Indie Rock. With that in mind, the highlights of this album are extremely high, and if nothing else you should watch the videos- both the music and visuals in them are just great.
Also one of the guys in this band looks exactly like a friend of mine but older gruffer and French and its fucking weeeeird
