Tumblr media
Every day, you wonder if it's possible to fall in love with Steven more than you already have.
It brims ceaselessly inside you, this fondness and warmth that only he could give you—that only he could ever make you feel. Your heart utterly swells with overwhelming adoration for him; it's nearly an inconceivable notion that there could be room for so much more.
But when it comes to Steven, he's always full of surprises. Always keeping you on your toes, always leaving you in wondrous amazement.
A tender glance your way, and your insides flutter with tremendous glee. It's as if there are millions of butterflies fluttering in your stomach, tickling your skin, making you smile and smile and smile…
And it's quite a bright smile that paints your delicate lips following the hearty chuckle Steven releases into the cool summer air.
You catch yourself staring at him helplessly, seeing how his chocolate irises light up like the starry night sky as the gentle cast of the moonlight dances over his features.
It's all too beautiful— he is too beautiful. Too perfect and breathtaking. All yours to hold onto dearly.
There's something about him that never fails to charm you. Whether it be his wit, his sense of humor, or his sass. The way he's sweet and kind to you, regards you as the sun of his universe. The list of endearing traits you've gathered throughout the three years is almost endless.
You find him fascinating, a work of art to admire in silent awe. Every part of him delights you, from the dazzling sparkle in his brown eyes to the delicate curve of his upper lip. Then there's the melodious tune to his laugh that allows a lightness to bloom in your chest.
You drown in his loving gaze as it melts into you. Its pure softness has you thanking the billions and trillions of heavenly stars above and the vast cosmos beyond for bringing Steven to you.
"Love, do I have something on my face?" He asks you, reeling you back to the dreamy reality that is yours.
The park around you is simply animated this evening. Full of energy and life, with live musicians busking to earn a coin or two, children skipping happily on the grassy knolls. You and Steven settle on your favorite spot— the flowing water fountain at the very center of it all.
A light giggle, then a quiet hum. You shake your head at Steven as he blindly wipes his undirtied chin with one hand, the other holding firm onto a half-eaten burrito. "No, you're alright, Steven. I was just stuck in my head, lost in my thoughts. But, uhh… what were we talking about again?"
He smiles adoringly at you, those darling doe eyes drinking in each and every detail of you. He looks at you as if you're the only one worth his glance— the only one worthy of his full attention. "We were talking about our day, dearie, and you left off at the part where you're telling me the most amazing lunch you've ever had."
"Oh, right, yes! We should really try that restaurant one of these days, babe. They have tons of yummy vegan options. Plus, word on the street is that this place has the best stuffed mushrooms in London. I already know that you're going to love it!"
"Aw, we should have ditched the burritos and gone there tonight instead," Steven pouts, taking another bite out of his food while you scarf down the last bit of yours.
"It's okay; there's always next time. Besides, Monday is burrito night anyway. Wouldn't miss this for the world," you reply with a slight shrug of your shoulders.
It's the truth. Burrito Monday is something you and Steven came up with one day and started doing every week. Once his shift at the gift shop ended, he'd go to the deli a few blocks away and pick up two delicious burritos before heading to your office. From there, the two of you would walk to the park, where you'd sit and enjoy your meal in each other's company.
A silly little tradition, but it is yours and Steven's. A memory to share, remembrance to look back on— one of many that you would forever cherish with him.
"Alright, enough about me. How was your day?" you query, waiting with a gentle smile as Steven finishes his meal.
"It was actually great! I caught the bus on time, which meant one less thing for Donna to chew me out for. Sold a bunch of candies and souvenirs. I even got to explain the Ennead to a curious kid, and I'm pretty sure he liked hearing what I had to say."
"Of course, he liked it! You're always so passionate about these things, and it's just wonderful getting to hear you talk about them, truly."
A slight flush creeps across Steven's face, and he clears his throat. "Thank you, darling. That honestly means a lot to me. Oh, I absolutely love you, you know that?. I love you, and— shoot! Speaking of gods, before I forget, I've got you a gift."
Steven takes a second to open up his messenger bag, his body teeming with excitement as he fishes out a small plush toy. He holds it out to you, his cheery smile reaching his wide, beaming eyes that grow even brighter when you realize what it was.
"Is this Tawaret?" you speak, enthused as he gives you the stuffed gray hippo with an eager nod. "She's so adorable, Steven!"
"I was doing inventory when I came across our new shipment of Tawaret plushies. It reminded me of when I told you of her story the day we first met," he reveals, still grinning. "I bought this because I thought you'd like it."
It seems absurd to others passing by, but you feel the tears beginning to well up in your eyes. "Gosh, Steven. This is lovely of you to get me. I-I know it's a toy, but if it weren't for you talking about Tawaret, we wouldn't even be here right now. Wow, I sound so cheesy, huh?"
Steven's smile softens, his fingertips rising to caress your cheek. His hand remains stroking at your skin as you lean into his tender touch. "It's not cheesy at all, darling. It's our story."
"Now you sound cheesy yourself," you jokingly return, shifting your head to press your lips to the palm of Steven's hand. "But, thank you, Steven. I love my new Tawaret stuffie, though I think I may love you a teeny bit more."
"A teeny bit more? That's all?" he says, laughing.
"Well, you can kiss me, and maybe I can reconsider—"
Steven doesn't give you the chance to finish that sentence. He'd swoop in, his hand tilting your chin to meet his gaze before claiming your lips in a sweet, honeyed kiss.
It leaves you breathless, dizzy, and high— makes your heart skip a beat, or two, perhaps even three.
You kiss him deeply, and he kisses you back deeper, seemingly forgetting where you are though it doesn’t matter.
All you know is that there's no better feeling than this— being here.
Being with him.
Every day, you wonder if it's possible to fall in love with Steven more than you already have.
Tonight proved to you that it most certainly was.

The Trail Badges of Merit
Dave Baugher completed his nine-year quest to walk the PCT this past summer. On the final leg of his journey, he was joined by four family members including his wife, Luann. Anyone whose hike of the PCT spans many years can imagine the building emotion as the elusive finish line approaches. I appreciated the creative way that Dave's family celebrated and honored the end of Dave's journey.
Tumblr media
By Dave Baugher
It was nearly the end of July, and I wandered northwards. Although technically summer, the morning sky was dull and grey, and the swirling cool, grey mist had a sickly pallor against the aging snow blanketing the Pacific Crest Trail. I had started at Snoqualmie Pass, Washington, and 2022 was going to be my last year hiking the PCT. This hike would conclude the M.Y.T.H. (Multi-Year Through Hike), which started on March 3, 2014. Unfortunately, the trail crews had not cleared the path from here to Stevens Pass. It was a short section, but a rotted snowpack, downed trees, and avalanche chutes clogged with the worst debris made my hike difficult. Tough? You bet, but that hiking tale is another story for another time.
When I arrived at Stehekin, my body and mind were trail hardened, and all was fine. With the arrival of my wife, Luann, and Brother-in-Law, Mike, my spirits truly improved. Even better, my son Jacob, and Son-in-Law, Patrick, arrived at Rainy Pass the next day, rounding out our trail troop. This group would join me for the remaining miles to the Northern Terminus.
The five of us began hiking those last fifty miles on August 4, an exceptional section of the PCT for me. A trail family of five hiking along the trail was unique after my many years of solitary hiking. However, events at the end of every day were even more memorable with this intrepid group. These proved to be one of those golden, marvelous moments you treasure forever: Let me tell you about the Trail Badges of Merit.
Jacob and Patrick had conspired together before the hike and produced the Trail Badges of Merit concept. Jacob is a Marine, and Patrick is an Eagle Scout. Both organizations support the idea of badges.
The Trail Badges of Merit on the PCT was a concept the two generated before starting the hike with me. In their own words:
"We had been mulling over ideas about celebrating and honoring your achievement for a while.  We had already decided that we would bring an unnecessarily heavy full glass bottle of your favorite scotch. Still, we wanted to commemorate your achievement in some other way at the finish line instead of waiting until you got home.  We discussed the possibility of having a trophy cast but couldn't decide on the size or the figure at the top.  The idea was also suggested of having a certificate of sorts framed or an authentic scroll printed, which we could unfurl and read aloud to our group.  Neither suggestion seemed practical given the space allowed in our packs or the ability to hide it from you for several days.  Beyond that, your achievement was significant because it wasn't solely about reaching the finish line as it may be with so many thru-hikers.  Your journey took years, encompassed different seasons with different challenges, and was marked by several significant life events, including retirement, weddings, and family and friends passing away.
Given the fact that there were so many things we wanted to commemorate, the inevitable idea of a merit badge came up, and we intuitively knew it was perfect.”
Trail Badges of Merit for my nine years of the hike; What a concept. We made our camp that evening at PCT mile 2602,  calling it quits after a beautiful day of hiking on August 4. Our group found a great spot on an exposed knoll where we set up for the night. A cool breeze circled our camp as we enjoyed our evening meals.

The Painkiller Badge
To take or not to take, that is the question
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The scratches and pains in outrageous volume
Or to take arms against the nervous system
And by opposing, end them. To ache, to throb
No more – and by a pill to say we ended
The pain and the thousand natural hurts
That flesh is heir to. It's a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To soothe, to sleep
To sleep perchance to dream, ay, there's the rub
For in that sleep of medicated calm
What dreams may come when we have shuffled off
This mortal coil, this reminder of our
Humanity, must give us pause
Dave will roll out some more of his Badges of Merit in future installments. The next -- The Trail Communications Badge.

Friday, 8/5/2022 - Rock Climbing at Basalt Cliffs with Kass, Jess, and Whit, and Overland Tour with Kevin
Kass and I went to breakfast together at Park House Cafe. I wanted to go climbing, so we'd grabbed Kass's harness from her house, and I brought my rope and harness and climbing gear. We were already in the car headed to Park House Cafe when I got a text from Jess inviting me to join her and Whit at the Basalt Cliffs behind Lambs Knoll for some exploratory climbing on sport routes. I'd never been to the Basalt Cliffs before, and since Kass and I were already planning on climbing, it made perfect sense to join Jess and Whit!
Kass and I found our way down to the base of the Basalt Cliffs (after asking Steven, a Rock Odyssey guide, who guessed that Jess and Whit were further East on the Basalt Cliffs). I gave Kass a quick lesson on lead belaying, and after Kass mentioned she was a little uncomfortable lead belaying me, we decided to find Jess and Whit, so that Kass could have a backup belayer.  When we met up with Jess and Whit, they were climbing their third route of the day, a 5.9. Steven and his clients were climbing pretty close by, within earshot. Jess was Kass's backup belayer, and Jess gave Kass some instruction and tips for lead belaying while Kass belayed me up this first route of the day. As Steven and his clients were packing up, Steven told us about a bunch of the routes in the area. Steven told us about three 5.8 climbs, two 5.9 climbs, and one 5.10b climb. Jess set up one of the 5.8s while I set up another 5.8. Everyone climbed both of those routes. Then, I set up one of the 5.9s, and everyone climbed that. I set up the 5.10b, and Jess and Whit both toproped it.. Then I set up the other 5.9 route. Kass hadn't had a chance to finish the first 5.9 before I pulled the rope, so I set that route up again for Kass, and Kass crushed it! Kass climbed four routes! It was her very first time climbing outdoors, and she did so well! I lead climbed six routes! I was really proud and excited about how well I climbed, since it had been a while since the last time I climbed. Weather started to roll in, and we hiked back to the car. It only took us like 10 minutes to get back to the car from the crag, which was awesome!
We went to the hardware store to buy some nuts and bolts; Kass needed help mounting her license plate, which had broken off of her car. I helped her reattach it. We cooked dinner and had a little dinner date on the floor of my room. After finishing dinner, we drove to Liahona for Kevin's sunset overland tour. Kass dumped a wine bottle into a water bottle, and we brought the wine on the tour and were enjoying it throughout the night. The overland tour was super fun! It was really nice to have a day where we went on an adventure and were active, and also have a chill, luxury, fancy night enjoying the perks of working for ZAC.
I’m grateful to Jess and Whit for inviting me to climb with them at the Basalt Cliffs. I’m grateful to Kass for communicating with me and being honest with me about not feeling comfortable lead belaying me. I’m grateful to Jess for giving Kass instruction and advice while giving her a backup belay. I’m grateful to Jess, Whit, and Kass for spending most of the day with me, climbing, and palling around (as Jess says). I’m grateful to Kevin for letting me and Kass tag along on his sunset overland tour. I’m grateful for fantastic friends, time in the outdoors, being active, pushing myself to climb difficult routes, and drinking wine during a beautiful sunset while overlooking gorgeous landscapes.

Gettysburg National Military Park (No. 42)
The battle began on the west at Lohr's, Whistler's, School-House and Knoxlyn ridges between Cashtown and Gettysburg. Nearer to Gettysburg, dismounted Union cavalry defended McPherson's Ridge and Herr's Ridge, and eventually infantry support arrived to defend Seminary Ridge at the borough's west side. Oak Ridge, a northward extension of both McPherson Ridge and Seminary Ridge, is capped by Oak Hill, a site for artillery that commanded a good area north of the town. Prior to Pickett's Charge, "159 guns stretching in a long line from the Peach Orchard to Oak Hill were to open simultaneously".
Directly south of the town is the gently-sloped Cemetery Hill named for the 1854 Evergreen Cemetery on its crest and where the 1863 Gettysburg Address dedicated the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Eastward are Culp's Hill and Steven's Knoll. Cemetery Hill and Culp's Hill were subjected to assaults throughout the battle by Richard S. Ewell's Second Corps. Cemetery Ridge extends about 1-mile (1.6 km) south from Cemetery Hill.
Southward from Cemetery Hill is Cemetery Ridge of only about 40 feet (12 m) above the surrounding terrain. The ridge includes The Angle's stone wall and the copse of trees at the High-water mark of the Confederacy during Pickett's Charge. The southern end of Cemetery Ridge is Weikert Hill, north of Little Round Top.
The two highest battlefield points are at Round Top to the south with the higher round summit of Big Round Top, the lower oval summit of Little Round Top, and a saddle between. The Round Tops are rugged and strewn with large boulders; as is Devil's Den to the west. [Big] Round Top, known also to locals of the time as Sugar Loaf, is 116 feet (35 m) higher than its Little companion. Its steep slopes are heavily wooded, which made it unsuitable for siting artillery without a large effort to climb the heights with horse-drawn guns and clear lines of fire; Little Round Top was unwooded, but its steep and rocky form made it difficult to deploy artillery in mass. However, Cemetery Hill was an excellent site for artillery, commanding all of the Union lines on Cemetery Ridge and the approaches to them. Little Round Top and Devil's Den were key locations for General John Bell Hood's division in Longstreet's assault during the second day of battle, July 2, 1863. The Plum Run Valley between Houck's Ridge and the Round Tops earned the name Valley of Death on that day.

Look at this painfully small, blurry photo of the the intro:
Tumblr media
Jamie is looking out to the ocean. Bill is either looking out to the ocean, too - or he’s looking at Jamie. He definitely isn’t facing the van as it goes by, anyway.
Perhaps the crackship was the conspiracy theories I made along the way.

the-foley-knoll-horror replied to your post “it’s been ages since I cared about what steven universe was up to but...”
Jasper was my favourite character and they just kinda had her fuck off out of the series when they set themselves up to do something really interesting with her. I hate that show's writing so bad.
I think the biggest problem with steven universe’s writing is that after gem drill (and also kind of before then but especially after that episode since it would’ve been a good moment to end the series imo) everything gives off the feeling that the writers had a lot of worldbuilding plans from the very start of the series that they want to incorporate somehow, but didn’t think they’d actually get this far into writing the series.
su is incredibly diverse and thus constantly at risk of getting cancelled if they get too gay for the network’s liking. they already have the most fucked airing schedule in human history and it’s probably a miracle it’s not cancelled yet. because of that the writers never seem sure of just how many things they can insert that they’ll actually be able to get back to. if they bring back lapis they’ve got to be able to dump her in the barn just in case they won’t have any more episodes to actually develop what they want to do with her. if they bring jasper back they can’t let her stay around for too long because there’s no certainty of whether they’ll be able to do an arc longer than the length of a stevenbomb. new characters that are introduced have to be written to the sidelines as soon as possible too because they either wrap up their arc in the five episodes the network decided to grant them or they might not be able to finish their arc at all before the show gets cancelled. they’re forced to imply things a lot without actually getting into them for fear of being cut short when they do go into them, but it results in a whole lot of implied cool things that are then never explored which is understandably frustrating.
on top of that I also feel like the show is starting to encompass stakes on a scale that was unplanned for. anyone who’s been in the fandom(TM) for a while knows the posts that go “episode one: steven thinks his powers come from ice cream. episode x: everything is terrible” and while I definitely don’t dislike this kind of escalation on principle, you do very much need to know what you’re doing and also have a clear end in sight when escalating things on this scale or you end up with some dragon ball nonsense. steven universe doesn’t seem to have an end in sight because it has no idea when it might be forced to end and the show as a whole suffers for it.
