By my side
Characters: Kelly Severide x Platonic!Reader, Matt Casey x Platonic!Reader, Sylvie Brett x Platonic!Reader
Warnings: Toxic men, abuse, protective firefighters.
Summary: You should've been better but at least your family is by your side.
A/N: For the sake of this, there'll be two ambulances which means two PIC's.
This has been sitting in my drafts for months unfinished and I suddenly decided to finish it after work on the train. Also couldn't be asked to proofread so sorry for any mistakes!! And I know this aesthetic thing sucks but it's been a long day and I'm tired, so sorry again. 😅😅
Tumblr media
Being a paramedic had always been your dream.
Growing up in a first responder household: firefighter dad and patrol officer mum, paramedics were a constant presence around them. So, it was only natural that was were you gravitated towards.
Following this, working at firehouse 51 was a given since that was where your father was a Captain at till he became battalion chief and moved to another house.
Your family had history in this house, making it somewhat sacred ground for anyone who shared your family's surname.
Yes, there had been times when you had to prove your worth and that you weren't a nepo baby but your family in everything but blood were always somehow five steps ahead of you.
So it only made sense that when you started to skip going to Molly's and skimping on details about what you did during your day offs, that they were concerned and confused to say the least.
Six months later, after nearly holding an intervention, you introduced everyone to your boyfriend Mason.
It was safe to say, everyone had their suspicions, even after being together for a year. All of which you excused, diverting and switching blame.
*****
You thought that you were finally happy with how everything in your life was settling but all of a sudden, fate decided that stability wasn't necessary for you.
Shouting and constant arguing should've been the first sign, blaring as bright as the sun, warning and shouting at you to break it off before reaching the one year mark but you briskly ignored it and marched on.
Then, the drinking problems, anger problems and impatience were made alight when you started living together. (he invited you to move in with him when celebrating one year together)
You found yourself not liking the man he started becoming the longer you were together. It irked you to no end and you constantly were skittish around him, finding it harder to have a civil conversation with him the more time passed.
It seemed that your feelings somehow transferred themselves over to your work life because you were suddenly snapping at the stand-in paramedic for Sylvie when she was sick for a petty reason.
The PIC in you forced you to immediately apologise before Kelly dragged you into his office, Matt following without a word.
Naturally, the three of you including Sylvie had a bond of 'commanding officers' as you were all in charge in some degree and over several years, the work relationship blossomed and the four of you were as thick as thieves.
It also helped that Matt and Kelly worked with your father and knew you from their pre-firefighter and your pre-paramedic days.
Under their concern filled gazes, you found yourself crumbling, eyes all of a sudden filled with tears from the stress of it all.
They couldn't help but confirm their fears which you tried to deny incessantly, for some reason defending Jason and explaining that this could all be fixed and everything would be back to normal in no time.
If only you didn't.
*****
Over the past year, everyone found you changing.
The stern but loving PIC you once were had become but a memory. It was as though you were a shell of your past self, something of which you agreed with.
Mason was draining the life out of you and the only time you weren't losing yourself to him was during your 24 hour shifts before being surrounded by him for the next 48.
You tried your best to leave, you really did but at some point in your now two year relationship, things took an abrupt turn and Mason had become this toxic, controlling man who has a newfound urge to resort to violence when you were being your true self.
Being PIC meant you had an amount of power under your title and after many years of work, you had perfected your nature. It's why you and Sylvie were so good at what you did; you used force when necessary and compassion was always on hand.
Over the course of the past year, you found yourself on the end of many interventions held by Matt, Kelly and Sylvie.
With all the reasons in the world, they argued and argued with you, laying out the easiest ways to break you free. They were as desperate as you were at this point to get you to break up with Jason. They missed and needed the old you back.
Unbeknownst to you, they schemed behind your back, trying and failing to convince you to leave Mason for good but you found yourself pathetically laughing at them before going home to endure hell.
You struggled to understand your behaviour. Abuse to this degree was something you never you experience firsthand and you would never wish it upon your worst enemies.
On sleepless nights, you constantly contemplated why you wouldn't leave. You wanted to, you really did but then you could hear him whisper in your ear and you remained firmly glued to his side.
So badly did you want to rip your arm out his earth shattering grip and run back home, to the safety of love and familiarity.
Your final decision was set in stone when he finally made his mark a month ago, fingertips bruised into your wrist when he wouldn't let you leave his car in front of the firehouse.
"Alright then, thank you for dropping me off. I'll see you tomorrow." You said, pressing your lips together in a tight smile, hand reaching for the door handle while the other fiddled with the handle of your tote bag.
He replied with something, you weren't too sure because you were already out the car, closing the door with practised precision and gentleness.
Your expressionless face brightened at the sight of your colleagues/friends/basically siblings at this point. The firehouse and all its inhabitants were truly your saving grace and without it, you weren't too sure where you would be.
Just as you were going to walk up the apron to meet them halfway, you were being pulled back by a random force. It was so sudden that you dropped your bag, your things spilling out as they rolled away.
You yelped, attracting the attention of those who weren't previously paying attention to your arrival in their mortal enemies car.
Scrunching your eyebrows, you turned to Mason in confusion, your eyes following the hand gripping your wrist to his face you were once infatuated with.
"What the hell Mason?!" You said with gritted teeth, trying to escape but he wouldn't let go. "Stop, your making a scene."
Before he could reply, several shouts came from behind you and before you knew it, you were being pulled into comforting arms as big and bulky men dealt with Mason.
"Oh Y/N." Sylvie's heart melted for you while it ignited in flames because of Mason. With your bag in one of her hands, she somehow collected all of your things, she brought you into her arms and hugged you tighter than a koala.
"Let me see your hand." She muttered under her breath, unbothered by the fuming men huddling around you in a protective barrier, on guard as they watched Matt and Kelly deal with Mason on the street.
She sucked in a sharp breath through her teeth at the finger shaped bruise on your wrist, you copying her when she lightly touched it. Despite her angelic exterior, you saw a red glint flash across her eyes, one you rarely saw but had seen several times before on the rare occasion.
If this was her reaction, then you were dreading Matt and Kelly's.
And your feelings were very much justified because as soon as they sent Mason away, you found yourself being subject to a very strong worded conversation.
They played the role of overprotective brothers perfectly. With the help of detectives who you were lucky to call good friends, your plan was set in stone and would take a week to fully come together.
Despite how meticulously everything was planned, you somehow ended up in the emergency room. Surrounded by doctors and nurses you recognised, you felt their sympathy and felt nearly emotional with the care that greeted you.
Thanking Maggie, you smiled and watch the charge nurse leave but you weren't alone for even a minute before three certain people came barging in.
With wide eyes, they drank in your slouched figure.
Matt looked alarmed, Kelly disgruntled and Sylvie on the edge of a breakdown.
You choked out a watery laugh, harshly swallowing back tears as you shook your head and blinked repeatedly. Releasing a shaky breath, you felt your chest tighten as your oxygen was constricted before it was all treated when enveloped in the loving arms of your 'siblings'.
Had it not been for your intense emotional state, you would've barked out in laughter at the anger displayed by Kelly who imitated a caged lion, Matt who spewed words Hank Voight would find offensive and Sylvie who played parts of a mother comforting their daughter but also Satan prepared to burn and punish sinners.
Your pain was muted by their presence alone. With their constant love and never-ending companionship by your side, you were sure to heal.

comforting them after a bad day [ chicago fire ]
⋯ CHARACTERS ; matt casey, kelly severide, leslie shay, sylvie brett, stella kidd, brian ‘otis’ zvonecek, joe cruz, christoper herrmann, violet mikami, evan hawkins, greg grainger
Tumblr media
⋯ MATT CASEY
when matt has experienced a bad day, he tends to get very quiet. sometimes even a little snippy whenever he’s asked if he’s alright. he recognizes that acting this way isn’t going to make his day any better, but it takes his a little bit. let him clam down, and once he’s done that, he’ll seek you out. quietly apologize for being snippy, and telling you that he’s just had a bad day. you can ask him how his day was -- he’ll tell you everything and at some point, slowly wraps his arms around you and leans his head atop your shoulder. inhaling your scent immediately calms him and he’s already starting to feel better
⋯ KELLY SEVERIDE
kelly tends to let everything build up. almost insisting he is fine and there’s nothing to truly worry about. and no matter how much you push, he’ll maintain the same story. until something just absolutely breaks him and everything that he’s kept bottled up for month finally comes pouring out. he’ll cry -- more of his eyes tearing up as he refuses to let them fall. but he practically falls into your grasp as you pull him into a hug. it’s really all he needs, just the comfort of having you near him as he talks about different things and lays his heart out on the table. card your fingers through his hair and just tell him that ‘it’s gonna be okay’. that’s all he needs for now
⋯ LESLIE SHAY
leslie, much like kelly, can be stubborn when it comes to talking about any bad days. however, she’s different as she’ll give one of the briefest overviews -- almost as if she’s giving a report, and then insist that she’s fine. all of her emotions comes out when she drinks, and you can tell she was anything but fine, considering the amount of drinks she’s already had. she’ll crumble into your arms, looking for your warmth as she begins to babble about her day and everything she was feeling. she’ll cling to you, but it’s truly something she needs as you’ve noticed her start to calm the longer and tighter you hold her
⋯ SYLVIE BRETT
sylvie will seek out comfort after a bad day. honestly, any type of comfort will help, but if given the option, she wants to spend her time cuddled into your side with her head resting either against your shoulder or chest. she doesn’t talk much about her day -- only just to tell you that it wasn’t one she would want to experience again before eventually falling asleep. she feels better with you, nothing you have to do aside from allowing her to cuddle up to you
⋯ STELLA KIDD
stella gets all quiet and short tempered. it almost takes you by surprise, until she makes a comment about her day. to which you ask her what she needs -- as she often wants different things depending on what had taken place. and once she makes her request, you’re dropping everything to do it. often, her go-to answer is to ask to be held in some way. honestly whichever way is comfortable for the two of you at the time.
⋯ BRIAN ‘OTIS’ ZVONECEK
brian is going to get super quiet after a bad day. meaning that whatever had taken place, must have really hit him hard. like most of the others, he will seek you out almost immediately. he needs comfort and wants to decompress from what he experienced for the day. kiss away his tears, hold him tight -- he’ll take literally any form of comfort so long as you are willing to give the time
⋯ JOE CRUZ
joe takes a lot of things to heart, and while he’s been able to keep himself from taking each thing he wasn’t able to do so personally, there are times in which he can’t help but feel that. especially after a bad day. he’ll seek you out, looking for some comfort as he gets the day off his chest. he’ll immediately wrap you up in his arms, tucking his face into your shoulder. he won’t talk about it right away, wanting to see you and tell himself that seeing you is better than any bad day he’s experienced. and while he’ll come clean about his day eventually, he’s just wanting to spend as much time with you as possible
⋯ CHRISTOPHER HERRMANN
christopher tends to get angry -- never directed towards one person, just as his frustration of the day grows, it gathers to a point where he may explode and accidentally take his anger out on the closest person. he realizes that mistake literally seconds later and calms down immediately. taking a few deep breaths before sitting down to tell you. he finds comfort in your touch and will show you by kissing your knuckles before apologizing. he’ll spend the night making it up to you, and in turn, it helps him settle in and finally gain some closure for the day
⋯ VIOLET MIKAMI
violet will put on a brave face and will power through the rest of her shift until she can have a moment to decompress. which is usually once she gets home and she can let her emotions out about her bad day. depending on the scale, there will be tears and she’ll hold onto you tightly as she lets it all out. she wants to be with you, and most likely won’t be getting up from her spot unless you manage to coax her to either eat or take a shower. otherwise, she’ll be content laying against you until she feels ready enough to detach herself form you
⋯ EVAN HAWKINS
if anything, evan grows more frustrated with himself. slowly begins to fall down the rabbit hole of ‘what ifs’. trying to think about what he could have done differently to change the course of the day he’s been having. he’s patience wears a little thinner and sometimes he can be a bit of a pain to have a conversation with. until he gets home and he crumbles, talking your ear off about how his day had been until he practically runs out of breath. he feels better afterward and can usually move past that day but it will always stick with him as he could have done better
⋯ GREG GRAINGER
greg tends grow quiet, almost closing in on himself and trying his best to get through the rest of his shift before going home. the second walks through the door, he’s immediately finding wherever you are in your shared home and latching onto you with already tear blurred eyes. he doesn’t really want to talk about it just yet, just needs to hear you talk gently to him and hold him close. he’’l eventually come clean about what took place, but he needs his own time to think through what had happened

~~~~~~~~~~
You and Matt have been married for three years. Despite once being in a relationship with Matt, you quickly befriended Gabby when you were her partner on 61. Now, Gabby is a firefighter under Matt and you are partnered up with Brett. Through all of the awkward moments between you and Gabby when it comes to Matt, you are still best friends. Gabby was one of your biggest supporters when you were pregnant with y/s/n. You and Matt had recently broken it off because of his alderman duties when you started getting violently sick. As your roommate and fellow paramedic, Gabby was obviously very concerned until she connected the dots.
Now, a little over three years later, you and Matt are married with a baby girl on the way. The morning sickness has definitely been the worst during this pregnancy, but Matt, Gabby, Kelly, Brett, and Stella have been nothing but supportive. As of right now, you are laying in Matt’s office with a trash can by his cot while Brett and Gabby are trying to calm you down as Matt rushes around to grab a few things. Kelly finds Matt pacing in the locker room, running his hands through his hair.
“Woah man. What’s wrong?” Kelly asks, coming to stop Matt and try to calm his best friend.
“God Sev.” Matt mutters, tears threatening to spill. “She is just so sick and I hate seeing her like this. I mean, I was talking to Gabby the other day and I don’t know.” Matt said, shaking his head and lowering himself to a seat on one of the benches.
Kelly sighed as he lowered himself to the bench beside his best friend. “You don’t have to be afraid Matt. You are already such a good husband and father. Adding one more will be a piece of cake.” Kelly soothed, patting Matt on the back.
Matt shook his head. “I never really had a father figure growing up. I’m scared I’m going to mess up and they are going to leave. Gabby tried to talk me down too and nothing…”
“Excuse me?” You croaked, leaning heavily on Brett as she helped steady you on the way to the bathroom while Gabby stayed behind to change Matt’s sheets.
“Y/n.” Matt sighed, standing slowly and coming over to you.
“No. You talked to Gabby and Kelly, but not your own wife? The mother of your TWO children!” You exclaimed, starting to shake as you began to yell.
“Baby. It’s not like that at all.” Matt plead, hands out to steady you, but you tumbled back, only being caught by Brett.
“You don’t get to be scared Matt Casey.” You whispered. “You and I are suppose to be in this together. I’m terrified every single moment since I’ve been pregnant. You know I have a fear of vomiting, yet I go through this because I love you and I love y/s/n and I want him to have a sibling.” You wept, closing your eyes as the world stared to tilt.
“Y/n!” Matt, Kelly, and Brett yelled.
You pushed back at Matt when he tried to touch you, letting Brett and Kelly lower you to the floor.
“Go get a sick bag, a water, and Gabby. Have her bring the go bag.” Brett said, feeling for your pulse.
“Shhhh. Breathe.” Kelly instructed, taking your face in his hands. “Everything will be just fine.”
“What if he leaves?” You sobbed, grabbing onto Kelly for dear life. “I need him. I’m just really hurt that he won’t talk to me but I need him.” You sobbed, not realizing that Matt was standing behind the three of you as he waited for Gabby clutching a sick bag and a bottle of water.
“Baby, no.” Matt whispered, coming to crouch in front of you, handing what he had off to Kelly. “Yeah, I’m scared and yes, I should have talked to you. But understand this: I. Am. Not. Going. Anywhere.” Matt emphasized, looking you dead in the eyes. “Both Gabby and Kelly found me in a panic and that’s why I told them. You are dealing with so much right now and I don’t want you to worry about me too.” Matt explained, wiping the tears from your face as Gabby came in with the go bag, slipping the pulse ox on your finger and the BP cuff on.
“How we doin?” Gabby asked, seeing your heart rate elevated and your oxygen levels at 95.
“Nauseous and dizzy.” You explained, leaning into Matt’s hands as he held your face.
“BP’s low.” Brett announced, grabbing the Iv kit from the bag. “I think you’ve got yourself dehydrated. I’m going to place a line.” Brett said, already prepping your arm.
Your eyes widened as you looked between all of your friends and your husband. “No way. Nope.” You said, trying to stand, but quickly falling back down into Kelly with Matt guiding your decent.
“You aren’t going anywhere. Relax.” Kelly said, squeezing your upper arms.
“Matt, please.” You begged, tears streaming down your face. You were starting to turn grey as the nausea built along with your anxiety.
“Shhh. It’s gonna be alright.” Matt soothed, kissing your forehead before turning to Kelly. “Switch with me. Let me hold her, it normally calms her down. Get the sick bag ready.” Matt instructed, quickly switching with Kelly as the man did what he was instructed to do. Matt sat with you in between his legs so that your back was pushed to his chest. He rested his chin lightly on your shoulder as he whispered in your ear. “Shhhh. It’s for the best. I’m sorry baby. I’m so sorry. I love you. I’ve got you.” Matt whispered as you began hyperventilating from the panic of the rising nausea and the impending IV.
“Look at me. Just look at me.” Kelly said, kneeling in your line of sight. He waited until you opened your eyes to meet his own. Kelly smiled at you as he started breathing in time with Matt. “Just relax. We gotcha. We gotta do what’s best for you and the little princess, right?” Kelly said, smiling wider when you nodded. “That’s right. Just breathe. Follow us and focus on us.” Kelly instructed.
Matt noticed you starting to follow, but saw Brett going in with the needle. Matt and Kelly made eye contact as the needle pinched your skin. Kelly saw your change in color as Matt felt your gasp and then gag harshly.
“Shit. Okay, here sweetheart. Hang in there.” Kelly said, placing the bag under your chin as Matt pulled your hair back once more and held you steady around the torso.
“I’m gonna flush this, then give her some Zofran. We gotta get this under control. You cool with that and then some fluids for her Matt?” Brett asked, flushing the IV as she spoke.
“God yes. Whatever you have to do.” Matt instructed, hating how you were squirming and panting in his lap. You shook like a leaf as Matt held you on the cold tile floor.
“Gabby. Can you run and grab a blanket and a wash rag? She’s shaking like a leaf.” Kelly asked, not daring to move the sick bag too far. You were only panting right now, but you had no color to your face.
“On it!” Gabby replied, hurrying off.
“Alright. You know this might sting just a little. Then I’m gonna flush it and then run the fluids, okay?” Brett warned, speaking directly to you now. Once you nodded, Brett administered the medication and did everything else she said she would do before standing up with the bag of saline.
Gabby came running back in as Brett stood up. You were still shaking, but you felt comfortable enough to push the sick bag away. Once Gabby helped you clean your face and wiped the sweat off of your face, she wrapped the blanket around you. A silent decision was made to move you, so Kelly pulled you up and steadied you until Matt stood back up and picked you up, carrying you back into his office.
You groaned, throwing your head back. “Can someone PLEASE get me some mouth wash or my tooth brush. I can’t take this taste anymore.” You whined, shoving your face into Matt’s neck as he sat with you in his lap on his cot.
You didn’t notice Kelly depart from you guys as the lot of you left for Matt’s office. He came back in seconds later with mouth wash, your tooth brush and tooth paste, another bottle of water and another sick bag. “I figured you would want to get the taste out.” Kelly said, confused at the laughter coming from everyone else.
“Thank God. Someone with some sense.” You muttered sarcastically, making grabby hands for the items.
Matt and Gabby muttered “I beg to differ” at the same time, causing everyone to laugh. God, you couldn’t do this without them.
Thanks a million♥️ So for the Brian ‘Otis’ Zvonecek requests I was thinking something along the lines of (reader aka y/n) is a new paramedic at firehouse 51 and everyone including Brian is shocked when she takes an immediate interest in him by flirting with him in front everyone… it’s not a perfect idea so pls feel free to adjust where you feel necessary, this is more of like a guideline than anything.
I was watching the episode where Terra Little joins 51 for a training shift and Otis is attracted to her but of course she chose Kelly Severide instead🥱 so I thought it would be a nice change if Otis is the guy she instantly gravitated towards because it’s very possible I mean he’s adorable common.
instant attraction
Tumblr media
Pairing: Brian "Otis" Zvonecek x Female!Reader
"And that would be everything" Sylvie said as she finished giving you a tour of the firehouse.
Joining the 51 had been nerve-wrecking for you ever since you found out your transfer had gone through, mainly because you knew how tight everyone was and you didn't want to intrude on anything.
"Thank you for showing me around. This is much nicer than the last firehouse I was at" you said, admiring the trucks and the ambulance, which was so much nicer than your previous ones.
"How was your last firehouse?" she inquired, not having received much information about you from Chief Boden.
"Typical boy house. I was the only female in the entire house, so you can imagine the atmosphere. The only one who wasn't bothered by my presence was my partner, but we were the same age, so that helped a little" you explained, continuing to walk around.
"I can promise you that it's going to be different here. Our guys are the best, you're going to fit right in with everyone" she smiled and wrapped an arm around your shoulder, steering you in the kitchen direction.
You didn't say anything as you slowly walked towards everyone, each of them minding their own business in the kitchen.
"Guys, this is Y/N. She's the new paramedic I was telling you about" Sylvie announced as you stopped in your tracks where everyone could see you.
"Hi" you said and waved shyly, not used to having so many intimidating pairs of eyes on you at the same time.
Each of them got up and introduced themselves one at a time, wishing you a warm welcome.
"I'm Brian, but everyone here calls me Otis. Welcome to 51, I hope you'll feel at home here" the most handsome man you'd ever seen said as he stood before you, hand outstretched.
You slowly brought your hand up and shook his, electricity quickly spreading through your body when your skin touched his. You inhaled a deep breath, Otis doing the same, which made you smile because it only meant that he felt the connection too.
"Y/N, nice to meet you. I'm positive I'll feel more than welcome here, especially with you around" the words stumbled out of your mouth before you could even think about stopping them.
You saw a slight blush coat Otis' cheeks as he looked around at his colleagues, all looking at the interaction between the two of you with much interest.
Otis cleared his throat and made you snap back to reality, suddenly becoming aware of everyone staring at the two of you and your hands still holding onto each other.
"Otis, why don't you finish the rest of the tour? Show her where we sleep when on shift and the lockers and showers and everything" Sylvie spoke up, sneakily winking at the flustered firefighter.
"Um, ye-yeah, sure. This way" Otis said and motioned for you to follow him.
You turned around briefly to look at Sylvie, who winked at you and smiled, making you smile back.
"She did this on purpose, didn't she?" you asked him, trailing after him down the corridor.
"Sylvie? Yeah, she likes to think she's Cupid and her main goal in life is setting people up every chance she gets. I'm sorry about this" he said, scratching the back of his neck.
"You don't have to be sorry, I'm not complaining one bit" you smiled at him, trying to show him that you were enjoying the situation to the fullest.
"Oh, great. That's, um, that's good" Otis said, cursing under his breath at how awkward he sounded.
"You haven't done this in a while, have you?" you questioned, trying to ease the tension.
"Is it that obvious?" he laughed, the rigidness in his shoulder slightly lessening.
"Maybe just a little" you laughed with him.
"I'm just not used to women showing interest in me first. It's always Casey or Severide or anybody else that gets the girls. It's never me" he explained, which made you feel a little sad for him.
Otis was nothing short of hot and extremely handsome, you couldn't understand why women wouldn't approach him.
"Well, if you're asking me, you're way hotter than everyone else in this firehouse" you leaned in and whispered in his ear before walking away.
You heard Otis inhale a deep breath behind you, making you smile.
You had a feeling you were going to enjoy life at 51.
Why would i lie to you?
AUTHORS NOTE: I started hating this like halfway through and I just kept going? but I hate this so if y'all do too I couldn't even blame you. This was supposed to be a request but I don't even like this enough to say it is.
synopsis: You and Gallo are targeted after accidentally coming across something you shouldn't.
warnings: some VERY bad writing, canon-typical violence, mention of kidnapping, head injury, very bad medical understanding, kind of meh ending
Tumblr media
Working in CFD meant every shift had the potential to be crazier than the last. You were always expecting something crazy to happen that would spin the entire day into chaos.
The last thing you were expecting on a seemingly random Tuesday was to walk straight into a drug den. You and Gallo were ordered to clear the house next door and ensure no sparks would ignite the abandoned building. You both had to pry the door open, making your way through the front room to check the side for any signs of smoke. As soon as you made it through the front room you were greeted by the sight of enough fentanyl and cocaine to kill the entire house.
You quickly stopped Gallo from barreling in after you, aware of all of the powders around the room.
"Is that...?"
"Yeah," You whispered, hands shaking as you radioed Kidd.
"Hey Lieutenant, do you copy?"
"I Copy, what's up Halstead?"
"We're gonna need CPD and decontamination down here," You replied, "I think we just found a trap house."
There was a pause, you and Gallo looked at each other nervously. You could hear Severiade ordering what you asked for, no doubt also radioing Boden.
"Are you and Gallo okay?" Kidd finally said.
"Yeah," Gallo nodded, "We're good, Lieutenant."
"Gallo," You caught his attention, pointing out the powder on both of your turnout gear, "We need to get out of here."
Gallo nodded, clearly trying not to breathe too deep like you were.
"Lieutenant, we have an unknown substance on our turnouts," You informed, "We need might need Brett and Violet standing by, from the looks of this set-up, I think it's Fentanyl."
"Okay, Copy that," Stella rattled off what she wanted you two to do. She ordered you both to leave the house, following Cruz and Severiade to the hasty decontamination that had been set up. Cruz had all but said that it was CFD policy and you two would be fine, but everyone was still on edge. You and Gallo had to strip down to your underwear, washing any exposed skin that wasn't covered by your turnouts.
"Hey," Kidd entered the tent as you and Gallo wrapped yourselves in Towels, "CPD just confirmed it was fentanyl in that room. They're calling in intelligence."
You and Gallo shared a look.
"Well, do we get to have some real clothes? Or do we have to wait around in towels?" You finally asked.
Kidd shook her head, "Protocol says we have to take you two to Med to get checked out-" You and Gallo groaned "-I'll bring you some clothes there."
"We really have to go to Med?" Gallo pressed, both of you trailing behind Stella as she headed for 61.
She scoffed, "Uh yeah. Now get in."
Violet chuckled from inside the rig, pointing at the two spots next to her, "One of you get the gurney."
"Not me," You snapped, playfully jabbing at Gallo before climbing to sit next to Violet. Gallo grumbled about it being unfair, but climbed into the rig and sat on the gurney anyway.
When you walked into Med, they were already waiting for you. Maggie and Will stood at the ambulance entrance with stupid grins when they saw your frustrated pout.
"You always find trouble?" Will joked, gesturing for you to sit on the edge of the bed in Bay 3.
"I just thought I'd come to see you," You told your brother, giving him a massive fake smile.
Will rolled his eyes as he ran through his checks, "How do you even accidentally find a drug den?"
"Yeah, I'd like to know that too."
You and Will looked over to see Jay leaning in the doorway, an amused smile on his face.
"We hadn't caught up in weeks, so I thought Halstead Reunion, ya know?" You replied, laughing as Jay tried to ruffle your wet hair.
"You look like a drowned rat," he laughed, wiping his hand on the towel around your shoulders like it was disgusting.
"Wow, that's the thanks I get for doing your job for you?" You retorted.
"Settle down, Children," Will waved Jay away when he started getting in the way.
You had to sit for almost an hour waiting for Med to go through the checks. When they were done, Kidd gave you CFD sweats to change into. When you were sufficiently dressed to look like a cadet, you joined Kidd and Boden to see what CPD wanted you to do.
Gallo looked a lot better than you did, his hair had at least dried and the sweats were his size. You, on the other hand, did in fact look like a drowned rat. The sweats Kidd had given you were much too big. You had to tie the sweatpants to keep them sitting comfortably. Both you and Gallo had Truck 51 shirts on, the goat emblem on the chest making you look like candidates.
Will had given you a towel, helping you dry your hair while you waited. You looked less rat-like but still felt extremely uncomfortable. Will had jokingly said at least you weren't overdosing on narcotics and immediately apologized when you gave him a shocked frown.
"Alright," Jay said as he and Hailey walked up to your little gathered group, "We need you two to come down to the district with us, and go over what you saw one last time on record."
"Alright, then," Boden nodded, giving you and Gallo his 'please behave' look he reserved especially for the two of you. "Keep me updated."
"Will do, Chief," Jay replied, letting Hailey lead the way back to their car.
As you were walking back to the car you started giving Jay shit, "So, do we get badges now? Seeming we found you your case?"
Jay scoffed, "Yeah sure."
He opened the back door for you to get in, smiling smugly. He definitely got too much amusement out of putting you into the back of his car.
You narrowed your eyes at him, "Don't smile at me like that, Chuckles."
Hailey laughed, looking back at the two of you from the passenger seat.
When you were done at the Precinct, Boden had called and informed you and Gallo were off for the rest of the shift. Jay offered to give you a ride home, all but demanding it. As you were headed back to your apartment, you asked him about the case. He waved you off with a lie about it probably being something gang-related and an easy case. You didn't really care enough to press him any further. You had learnt a while ago that pressing Jay for information about the job wasn't worth it - he tried to hide most of the danger from you. At some point, you got so used to it that you always assumed whenever he was quiet it was worth just not asking anything more.
Eventually, he even stopped pressing you about the dangers of your job, it was a weird unspoken recognition between you and him. Not to ask too much.
When you jumped out of the car you wished Jay luck in the case, wanting nothing more than to go home and wash the day away. You were leaving the shower when your phone lit up. Clearly, Gallo had the same thought as you, what an awful way to spend the rest of an on-shift day.
Want to grab a drink?
You laughed, responding; only if you bring it here cbf going out.
Gallo let you know he would be at your apartment soon, no doubt bringing enough beer for you two to drown your sorrows about being benched.
Gallo arrived with a six-pack, putting them in the fridge and bringing two over for you both. He sat next to you on the couch, both of you silently watching the game and just trying to decompress from the day.
"I hate this," You finally muttered, sick of sitting doing nothing while your friends were at work.
"Me too," Gallo replied, looking as forlorn as you felt. After another moment of silence Gallo said, "When I was coming here, it was so weird, I could have sworn someone was following me."
You laughed, "Following you?"
Gallo turned to face you, looking extremely serious, "Yeah, following me. This black ford was behind me up to the store, I thought it was nothing but when I headed here it was two cars behind me, again."
You mirrored Gallo, turning to face him as he spoke. Any sense of drowsy self-pity had vanished and now you were growing concerned, "It followed you all the way here?"
Gallo shook his head, "No. It pulled off a couple of blocks before me, I figured it must have been someone taking the same route, but..."
"But?"
"it just felt strange," Gallo confessed.
You put your almost untouched beer on the coffee table, walking around the couch to grab your phone off the kitchen counter where I was charging.
"What are you doing?" Gallo asked, frowning at you, "You think it really was following me?"
"I don't know," You told him, "But I'd feel a hell of a lot better if Jay came and told us for sure."
You searched through your phone for Jay's name, quickly calling him and walking back to Gallo. As you heard it start to dial, you heard the unmistakable sound of a car screeching to a halt.
"Tell Jay what's going on," You ordered Gallo, shoving your phone at him for him to take. As Gallo rambled off what was going on to Jay, you slowly approached the windows. You pressed to the side of the window, trying to not be seen by anyone outside. You gently parted the curtains, glancing through the gap to see four armed men getting out of a black crossover.
You ducked away from the windows quickly, grabbing Gallo's arm and yanking him along with you to your ensuite. He handed the phone to you with a breathy, "Jay wants to talk to you."
You nodded, grabbing the phone off him, then pushing him into the bathroom, "Stay in here, get low and lock the door."
Gallo protested, "What about you?"
"I'll be fine, just do as I say," You snapped back shutting the door quickly and as quietly as you could.
"-Y/N? What's going on? Y/n!"
You held your phone to your ear with your shoulder, making your way back out of your bedroom and into the lounge to get a vantage point on the car in your street.
"Jay, there are four armed men outside," You weren't sure why you were whispering, the men hadn't even approached the windows so they wouldn't be able to hear you.
"Patrol is 5 minutes out, we're not far behind, okay?" Came jays response.
"Okay," You whispered. You ducked around your couch, using the furniture to hide your figure as you tried to look for a license plate on the car.
"Shit!" You cursed, barely having time to press yourself flush to the ground before three of the men unloaded their magazines into the front of your apartment.
"Y/N?" You could hear Jay's concerned voice coming from your phone, but it had skidded out of sight when you hit the ground.
The rain of bullets left your ears ringing, all around you were shrapnel of your apartment. Tiny fragments of glass mixed with the ripped-up wood of the floors, essentially creating one hell of a scene.
You dared raise yourself off the ground, getting to your hands and knees and psyching yourself up to crawl to the kitchen to hide behind the counter. The ringing in your ears subsided briefly for you to hear the crunching of footsteps approaching. The footsteps belonged to a pair of dark military-style boots. Before you could think too much about the fact, one of the boots came down on your back, kicking you to the floor and winding you.
You let out a puff of air at the force, gaping and hiccuping trying to regain your breath. The pair of boots were joined by another and you were hauled to your feet.
"Where is it?"
Both of the men were dressed in military-style tactical gear, all black aside from their vests which were camo. Their faces were covered by goggles and balaclavas. It was no doubt meant to be intimidating, but all you could think was what the fuck did they want with you.
"I don't enjoy repeating myself, where is it?" The man on your left snarled, he had a tight grip on your arms while the man on your right loosely trained his rifle on you.
You didn't know what to say, this was all so absurd. Instead of replying to the man you just laughed, a laugh of shock and surprise. The two men looked at each other, and then one of them punched you straight in the stomach.
"Jesus Christ," You swore, doubling over and struggling not to empty your stomach on their boots, "I don't know what you're talking about, okay?"
The sound of police sirens and the bright flashing lights were surrounding you at once. You could hear the patrol cops shouting orders at the men outside your apartment, then the repeated sound of gunfire.
"Last chance," He warned, "Tell us where it is, or we'll kill you."
You almost screamed when the man's chest exploded, his blood spraying over your face and chest. At least you were expecting it when the second man went down too.
"Chicago PD!"
In your line of work, you had been covered in other people's blood more times than you cared to count - but this was different. As you stood shell-shocked, a swarm of officers filled the room. The ringing in your ears grew and grew, all you could do was stare at your shaking hands that were covered in the men's blood.
Someone was grabbing your arm, pulling you towards the door and away from the bodies. Your legs shook so badly that had to support you as you walked. Your vision was blurring from tears that clung to your lashes, every step you took felt like you were slowly sinking into the pavement. You were led through the sea of CPD to an ambulance then gently sat on the back step. You could hear the rustle of action going on around you now, but the blood rushing in your ears drowned most of it out.
Someone was gently taking your face in their hands, guiding you to look up at them. Hailey smiled down at you, slowly talking you through the wave of panic that held you. She wrapped a thick blanket around your shoulders, tucking it under your chin as you sat immobile. Hailey sat down next to you, grasping your hand tightly in hers and rubbing a soothing hand up and down your back.
"Just breathe, you're safe," She kept saying, whispering it quietly into your ear as she soothed your hair away from your face.
Once you finally felt like the world had stopped shaking and the ringing in your ears subsided you realized what was really going on.
You let out a small sigh, turning to Hailey with wide eyes. You wanted to ask what the hell had just happened, to swear and shake the anxiety out of you. Instead, you just looked at her, distraught.
Hailey knew what you were trying to say. She smiled softly, her tone was so soft it almost made you feel warm and safe, "Don't worry about that right now. What matters is that you're okay."
You nodded, letting her pull you into a tight hug and hold you there for a moment. When you both pulled away, she waved over the waiting paramedics, who gave you a few damp wipes to clean your face.
Hailey helped you wipe the blood off your face and neck, watching you struggle to not be ill at the idea of someone else's blood covering you. She kept you calm and held your hand, reassuring you that everything was alright the whole time.
When you were done clearing your face, she took both your hands and started whipping your arms and hands. As she did, your eyes wandered to the scene around you. There had to be at least 6 or 7 patrol cars all parked haphazardly around the street. Uniformed officers were already setting up the tape and directing crowds and media away from the debris field. You could see Gallo sitting in a different ambulance, he looked unharmed, probably just as shaken as you were. Kevin and Kim were standing by, talking to him and the paramedics.
Voight was standing with the rest of intelligence and Trudy, commanding the uniformed officers and lab techs around the scene. As you looked over you spotted Jay, who was standing with his arms crossed over his chest. He glanced over as you were looking, making eye contact and breaking away from the group.
Voight and the others watched him approach you and Hailey. When he got up to you, he quickly pulled you into a hug. He was squeezing you so tight it was almost constricting. You didn't have the heart to tell him that. When he pulled away he forced you to sit back down next to Hailey.
"Are you alright?" He asked gently.
You couldn't find the words to reply, just shaking your head.
Jay grimaced, nodding in understanding. "Hailey is going to go with you to Med, yeah? I'll come as soon as we finish here."
You nodded, your voice still having not returned. Jay pressed a kiss to your hairline, helping you to your feet and into the ambulance. He sent you one last smile before he shut the doors and watched the Rig pull away.
"She okay?" Voight asked as he rejoined the gathered officers.
Jay sighed, "I don't think so, she's really shaken."
Kim nodded, "Gallo told us what happened, she locked him in the bathroom like she knew they would open fire on them."
Jay remembered all the times he told you when you were younger - the safest place in that situation is in the bathtub. Seeming you didn't have one, the bathroom had been your attempt to make do with little resources. The team kept looking at him like they were expecting him to snap, such a brazen attack on his sister with so many witnesses meant there was something bigger at play here. Jay wasn't angry - he was seething. The white-hot fury that slowly burns away at your heart, that would make you act like never before.
Will was feeling something similar when he watched you walk into med for the second time that day. This time, however, he knew you were hurt. Hailey was holding you up, tightly gripping your forearm and steering you into the ED. You had refused to be wheeled in on the gurney, adrenaline coursing through you still, making you unable to feel the pain.
Will dropped his tablet on the desk, running over to you and taking your other arm as you pitched to one side.
"What the hell happened?" He asked, taking in the smudges of blood on your skin and the stains over your shirt.
Hailey answered for you as you fought to stay present, your mind wanting to swallow you whole and ignore the outside world.
Will helped you into the bed, the deja vu of the situation made your skin crawl.
"Hey, what's going on?" Dr Marcel asked as he wanted in, a nurse on his heels. Will looked at you to explain, but you were replaying the night before you. Watching your apartment rip apart again, hearing the crunching of footprints over and over.
"Y/N?" Will grabbed your hand, smoothing your hair back as he tried to calm you down. The monitors started to beep as your heart rate rose and oxygen levels dropped. "Try to breathe, squirt."
You shook your head, unable to slow your breathing or gather any control to do so.
"Can we get a cannula on her please?" Dr Marcel ordered. You could feel the tube being placed on your face, looped around your ears. It made you uncomfortable but there was nothing to do about it.
You gripped Will's hand even tighter, choking on sobs and your own gaps for air. Will watched helplessly, trying to calm you to no avail.
"Will," Crockett spoke, ".5 of versed?"
Will knew the last thing you would have wanted was to be sedated but your oxygen stats were dropping, even with the cannula. He nodded to Marcel, letting him know to go ahead.
He prepped the meds quickly and behind his turned back, when you caught on to what was going on you were already too far gone in your own panic attack to protest. Eventually, the versed did its job of calming you down enough to allow you to relax and feel safe.
"Sorry," You croaked, throat raw from the earlier events.
Will smiled, "You just had to see me again, huh?"
You laughed a little, the movement sending an ache through your stomach, "Don't make me laugh," You pouted holding your abdomen as if it would help.
Crockett watched you two with an amused grin, now that you had calmed down, he asked where you were hurt.
Will had to give you his stern 'I'm the eldest so you do as I say' look, knowing how you and jay both resisted hospitals greatly.
"My right side," You explained to Crockett, gesturing to your right ribs where you had been cruelly sucker punched.
Crockett gently lifted your shirt off the area, even through his gloves you could feel how cold his hands were. He pressed against one of your ribs, causing you to let out a strangled, "Fuck," at the sudden pain.
Crockett smiled sheepishly, "Sorry."
You scowled at him, "Yeah, sure you are."
"Glad to see your humour is still intact," Crockett joked, laughing at Will who looked less than impressed at the two of you bantering.
You smiled at your brother, trying to reassure him that you were fine now. Even though your mind was still full of fog. Every time you stopped to think about it, you were brought back to the events in your living room.
When Dr Marel finished his prodding, he said he would get you on the waitlist for a CT, but that it might take some time. You had to bug Will to go back to his shift, promising that you wouldn't pull a Jay and try to break out. He had only agreed after Hailey promised she wouldn't let you leave either.
"How's Gallo?" You asked Hailey, having not seen him since the ambulance.
Hailey smiled, "He's alright, Sarg took him back to the precinct until we figure out the best way to handle all this."
"Okay," You replied, sighing at the idea that this wasn't all over, just yet.
After the CT scan Dr Marcel assured you and Will - although mostly Will - that you had no broken ribs, but some gnarly bruises that might leave you stiff for a few days. You had grumbled about not being able to go back to work and Dr Marcel laughed at how irritated Will looked.
Hailey had helped you get dressed in some clean clothes, some of your sweats she'd nabbed from your apartment. She helped you put on a zip-up, apologizing at your winces when you had to move too fast. Will had given you a gentle side hug as you and Hailey left, promising that you could crash at his.
After you got done at the precinct and relayed your statement for the umpteenth time, Jay drove you to Wills. He hovered more than usual, giving you his jacket to keep you warm and letting you know he would go to your apartment and grab some of your stuff.
“You don’t have to go out of your way,” You laughed, letting him bring you a coffee.
“I won’t be,” Jay replied, gently squeezing your shoulder, “Working the case remember?”
Tumblr media
It took a week for you to get back to work, the bruising had gone from purple to green, looking more gnarly than before. It didn’t hurt so much anymore, at least not enough that you couldn’t work. You walked into the firehouse at the start of your shift expecting the ‘surprise’, but it still scared the living daylights out of you. When you walked into the common room, there was no one around. Expecting them all to be gathering in the locker room like they normally did, you thought nothing of it.
When they all rounded the corner into the room shouting you jumped hallways to the roof.
“What on earth?” You asked, laughing as they handed you a small box.
“Ah,” Hermann waved his hand, “Just open it.”
You laughed, flipping the box open to reveal a plastic police badge. Immediately you burst out laughing, “A police badge?” “Yeah! Seeming you got Intelligence that case, you’re like a cop now,” Gallo joked, playfully elbowing you.
“Oof,” You grabbed your side, slightly doubling over where Gallo elbowed you.
Brett was at your side instantly, grabbing your arm and asking what was wrong. Gallo had gone pale, looking terrified he had just hurt you again.
“Are you alright?” Kidd asked, coming to stand next to Brett with her eyebrows knitted.
You straightened up, dropping your hands, “Yeah, I’m fine.” You grinned, “Just wanted to mess with Gallo.”
Everyone laughed, cheering about how it was good to have you back. Gallo grabbed you into a hug, complaining about how that prank was cruel. You sat down to have breakfast with them all, telling Gallo, “It’s payback for that god-awful date you set me up on.”
Being back to work was exactly what you needed. As much as you loved your brothers, they were hovering a lot and it was nice to get back to a little bit of normality. Your apartment was being repaired, the landlord taking her time and dragging her feet about the ordeal. So, living with Will had meant everything still felt strange. Your truck never treated you any differently though, being back sitting with Gallo and Carver in the truck was the best you’d felt since the incident.
After a couple of shifts, you’d fallen back into the rhythm of it all, you and Will worked differing shifts so you would often get home to him leaving for work or vise versa. The more you were back on the job the more you started to forget the whole incident. You were at Molly’s one night after shift when Jay and Hailey had come to chill. They had let you know if passing the case was still unsolved and that the police chief had set them up on another case seeming that one didn’t have any leads. You didn’t mind much, it was easier to leave it in the past. Besides, the men who had attacked you and Gallo in your apartment had been locked in prison out of state, you barely had to testify seeming the entire encounter was captured by your neighbour's security cameras. You had gone back to your normal life, responding to fires and car crashes and the occasional ‘how did they get stuck there’ calls.
“All Units, Structure fire, S Canal St.”
You all jumped into action, suiting up and climbing into the rig.
“S Canal street? Isn’t that warehouses?” Carver asked.
“Yeah,” Kidd replied, frowning at her screen.
When all the companies pulled up the address, all of you climbed out to see the seemingly abandoned area.
“Where’s the fire?” Severiade asked no one in particular.
You were all suited up, Truck, Engine and Squad prep with SCBAs with no fire to respond to.
“Spread out, see what you can find,” Kidd ordered. You, Violet and Brett walked around the side of the warehouse to see if you could find anything. As you were approaching the back of the building you saw a door left open.
“Lieutenant,” You spoke to the radio, “There's a door open on the B side near the back.”
There was no reply, you frowned and tried again. When there was still nothing you turned to Brett and Violet, “Maybe the radios are down?”
Brett frowned, trying her radio to no response.
“Help!”
You looked back into the warehouse, trying to decide what to do.
“Okay,” You sighed, “I’m going to go in, maybe you guys can go back and get the others?”
Brett looked apprehensive but agreed, telling Violet to go get Kelly and Stella while she grabbed the gurney. You walked into the warehouse, grabbing your tac light and turning it on to look around.
“Fire Department, Call out!”
There was no response, the warehouse was so quiet you could hear your footsteps echoing off the walls.
“Fire Department, Call out!” You repeated. This time you could hear a reply. As you headed further into the warehouse you heard a loud slam. You frowned, turning around to see the door you entered from was shut.
“Brett?” You spoke into the radio, “Anyone copy?”
You started to get uneasy, there was something wrong here. Turning back to where you heard the victim last, you came around a corner to see a room full of machinery.
“Fire department!”“Here!” As you stepped into the room, you knew for sure something was wrong. It felt like your entire body was charged with nervous energy, the hair on your arms standing on end. You had got to stop getting into these situations.
You raised your halligan a little higher, ditching your flashlight and opting for the more weapon-like thing you had. You tried to check every corner and crevice as you walked through the room, but there was nothing to see. Or nothing that you could see. You walked around the final corner where you saw a man lying on the ground, half under what looked like some kind of crusher.
“Sir?”
You took an apprehensive step forward, lowering the Halligan. As you did, you felt the smooth metal of a blade being pressed above your collar.
“Drop the bar.”
You did as you were told, letting the metal clang to the ground and offering the suspect your hands. The man who was on the ground got up, simply sliding out from where he was.
Just my luck.
The man lowered the blade and grabbed our hands, pushing you forward towards a door back to the main warehouse room.
“...stead… do you… rep…”
You were dragged from the first floor to the basement, zip tied at the wrists and forced to your knees. A man with a rifle stood at the doorway, wearing the same black military tac the men t your apartment were wearing.
‘Is this about the drug den?” You demanded, “Because I told your buddies when they destroyed my apartment, I don’t know where the police put your stuff.”
One of the men walked up, your mind immediately started to go over the features you could see from how covered he was.
6’2”, brown eyes, white.
“I don’t believe you, Lady firefighter.”
Texan accent. Texan Accent?
“Why would I lie to you?” You snarled, “I really don’t feel like dying in the dirt and I’m clearly not a cop.”
You could hear the smile in his voice, “I don’t care about the product anymore, love.”
“Then what?”
“You got four of my best men locked up.”
“Clearly they aren’t the best if they got themselves locked-”
His fist slammed hard into the side of your face, sending your head snapping to the side. You could taste the copper in your mouth from the blood. You licked your lips, feeling the split that started bleeding.
“Halstead… …are you…”
Texas reached for your radio, he fiddled with the buttons as if trying to inspect its functions.
You pointed to the button on the side, “You hold that button to turn it off,” You told him, smiling pleasantly knowing it would irk him.
“...firefighter Hal… …respond… …you copy…”
Kidd was sounding more and more frantic in the broken bits you could hear.
Texas was clearly getting fed up with the interruption, he held down the button on the side. The radio crackled signifying it was relaying to the team.
“You know, they will call the cops if I don’t respond,” You said, trying to act casual.
“Let them,” Texas hissed, “You’ll be dead before they get inside.”
He let go of the button, frowning at it and waiting to see if there were any more responses.
“...Repeat that…”
“...CPD… the way…”
“You fucking bitch.”
You smiled, teeth stained red from the blood on your lips, “You really should know how to use a radio, jackass.”
Tumblr media
Violet came running around the corner up the Kidd and Severide as they stood trying to figure out where the caller is.
“We found the entrance,” She told them, “We heard someone, Y/N went in”
“Alone?” Kidd demanded.
Violet nodded, gesturing to Sylvie, “Brett had to get the gurney, our radios aren’t working.”
Severiade gestured for Violet to lead the way to the door as Kidd rounded up the rest of the company.
When they all got to the door, they realized it was locked tight.
Severiade tried opening it, pulling it to no avail.
“We could force it open?” Stella asked.
Kelly frowned, gesturing to the door, “It’s an old-style security door, the hinges are on the inside.”
Kidd turned to him, “Something doesn’t seem right.”
“I agree,” Kelly responded, looking up the building for signs of other ways to get in.
“Can squad get the door open?”
“Yeah,” Kelly replied, “But it’ll take some time.”
As kelly started barking orders to the gathered firefighters, Kidd stepped back at tried the radio.
“Halstead,” She spoke into the radio, “Do you Copy? Report.”
There was no response.
“Our radios weren’t working at all before,” Violet offered, “Maybe there's some kind of interference from inside?”
The group watched as Cruz and Severiade made slow work cutting through part of the door, trying to find a way to break into the door. They had to keep replacing the blades to the saw that broke, making the job tedious.
“Halstead, are you okay?” Kidd tried again
She sighed, “Gallo, Carver, did you find any other entrance?”
Carver shook his head, “Only an old garage door, but it’s bolted up from what we could see.”
Kidd sighed, knowing the best chance would be to get you on the radio somehow.
“Firefighter Halstead, respond. Do you Copy!”
There was a crackle in everyone's radio.
“...know… …call the cops…”
Everyone grimaced at the sharp scratch the radios made.
“... dead before…”
“That wasn’t Y/N,” Mouch noted, it was definitely a male voice who spoke the second time.
“Y/N, can you repeat that?”
Silence.
“Dispatch, this is truck 51 requesting immediate police backup. We have a possible hostage situation here.”
“Copy that, Truck 51. Patrol is on route.”
“Halstead? CPD is on the way, what’s going on?”
Tumblr media
Adam took the stairs two at a time, bounding into the Bullpen and telling them all to be quiet. He turned the volume up on his radio.
“...Units on the city-wide, any available units to 1399 S Canal St, Truck 51 reported a possible hostage situation with a firefighter.”
Jay stood up from his desk, grabbed his phone and called you. The phone rang and rang but you didn’t pick up. He frowned, searching through his contacts until he found Stella Kidd's name. He only had her name for emergencies and this was definitely one.
“Jay?” Kidd answered.
“Stella, what’s going on, we heard dispatch call for cars to your location.”
“Listen,” She responded, “Y/N went into a warehouse and the door locked behind them, we can’t reach them on the radio. We got a broken bit of a conversation, she said ‘call the cops’ and a man responded ‘dead before’.”
Voight immediately ordered the group to tac up and head to the location, knowing how important this was to them all.
When they all arrived, they joined the firehouse at the side door. By now, Squad had almost got the doors open, they only had to pry them open with the jaws before it would all be a go.
Voight ordered everyone but Severiade and Cruz back to the trucks, but the firefighters all stubbornly refused.
“We’ll stay out of the way but we gotta be close, what if they need us?” Kidd had argued.
Voight didn’t have time to argue, letting them stand far enough from the door that they wouldn't be in the line of fire if there was an offender at the door.
“Ready?” Severiade asked the gathered officers. “On three. One, two, three.”
He and Joe pulled the door open, getting out of the way for the 7 police officers to rush inside.
The team quickly and quietly cleared every room, making it around the basement until they found the stairs to the basement. Voight gave them the clear to make their way down the stairs, letting Kevin and Torres lead the way. At the bottom of the stairs there looked like there was nothing. The room was pitch black, the only light from the teams flashlights.
Kim sweaped her flashlight across the room, "Hey, Adam?"
Adam joined her side, "What is it?"
Kim pointed to a door, a large metal vault door similar to the one outside. It was cracked open slightly, sending a slight draft around the room.
Adam nodded, gesturing for Kim to lead the way to the door. Adam opened it and Kim lead the way into the next room. The room was less a room and more the landing to fire escape.
Kim called out to the rest of the team, they all gathered on the landing, coming to the same conclusion, the suspects had left the building and now they were playing catch up.
All you could think about was all of the times Jay told you about these kinds of cases, about how he and Atwater found Kim through Kim's persistent efforts. How most of the time victims had to fight to be found. He mentioned once how he responded to a call as a patrol officer, to find a women had jumped out of a moving car to avoid being kidnapped. At the time it was his way to teach you to be careful, but you were freshly 21 and laughed him off.
You really should have payed more attention.
It hadn't been long, definitely less than an hour since Texas had forced you out of a fire escape and into the back of a car. You'd given about as much trouble as you could, kicking him in shin when he'd shoved you into the care. You knew it had to hurt with your uniform boots, but he didn't seem too happy about it.
You had passed at least two blocks and tried to count, but the warehouses made it hard to focus. The driver turned down a street and then into a car junkyard. You would have laughed at the irony had it not meant upsetting Mr texas more.
When he and the driver got out of the car, they stepped away to talk to a new person you didn't recognize. She was at least dressed like a normal person if more fancy than you would have thought necessary for a junkyard.
As a last-ditch effort you tried the radio, "Lieutenant, do you copy?"
There was no reply. You were on your own.
The door was thrown open and you were dragged out of the car. As if they finally remembered they were kidnapping a firefighter, they roughly grabbed your SCBA and threw it to the side, ditching the equipment somewhere near a line of crushed cars. Texas and the driver grabbed you by the arms and pulled you along the gravel until you were towards the back of the yard. You kicked and screamed, trying to break the ties on your wrists or bring any kind of attention.
They threw you on the ground, Texas brandished his revolver and pointed it at you. All you wanted to do was scream and plead, but there was no time. The gun went off and you hit the ground.
The first thing you recognized was the PASS alarm. It was far enough away that it was slightly muffled, but you could hear it clearly through the yard. You hoped that maybe someone would hear it over the traffic noises going on around you. Any sense of fight had left, it was clear this wasn't a kidnapping it was an execution. Now all you could do was lay hopelessly in the dirt.
"Dr Acher, Dr Asher, we got incoming!"
"Brett, talk to me!" Hannah called as she joined gourney rolling through the doors.
"Y/N Halstead," Brett started to rattle off, "GCS 9, perforating head wound. CPD found her in a car yard, no idea how long she was there."
Will had to hold Jay back from barrelling straight into the room, trying to persuade him that it would be okay without fully believing it himself.
"Page Neuro," Dr Archer ordered, "Let's get a CT and push fluids."
Hannah's face was hovering over you, you could feel a sharp pain in your chest as she performed a sternum rub.
"Y/N?" She pressed, "How are you feeling?"
You groaned, trying to swat her hand away but being held back by the nurses. Everything was moving so fast, it felt like your head had been hit by a sledgehammer. Any sense of time or spacial awareness was gone. It was like an out-of-body experience, but not the fun kind.
When you were next aware of your surroundings, your hand felt clammy. You forced your eyes open and grimaced at the brightness. You pulled your hands towards your face, trying to block the light.
"No, hey, don't," Jay protested, grabbing your hands and pulling them away from the bandages on your head.
You frowned at him, unable to muster up any more energy to fight him. You were half asleep, the feeling of not knowing if your dreaming or not. Jay was at your side, holding your hand. You wanted to tease him about how clammy his hands felt, but talking was too much energy. Hailey was beside Jay, she smiled brightly at you and pulled a blanket higher around your body.
After a while Will came into the room carrying coffee cups, he grinned when he saw you half awake. He gently pulled you into a hug, helping you prop yourself up on the bed.
"I don't get a coffee?" You croaked, attempting a chuckle that ended in coughing.
Will helped you sit up, holding your arm as you coughed like a child.
He and Jay helped you lay back down, Will fussed over the monitors and jay pulled the blanket back up again. You lazily pushed his hands away mumbling about being fine and he was smothering you. Jay ignored you and continued fussing.
You spent 3 weeks in the hospital, Dr Abrams had kept telling you about how lucky you were to be alive - let alone spend such a short time in the ICU. During that time, Will and Jay were almost always around. If they weren't, it would be someone from 51 or all of them.
You had woken up one day to the entire lot of them crammed into the room, somehow managing not to wake you with their rowdiness. They had all teased you about the situation,
"Only you would get yourself in that situation, Halstead," Violet joked, playfully poking your arm.
You had shrugged and proclaimed you wanted the paid time off.
When you were released, Dr Abrams had schooled Will on everything to look out for, warning the both of you to be on high alert. You were expecting it, but still the scolding only made Will more protective.
He always doctored you and Jay, but now it felt like he was less your brother and more a live-in doctor. Staying with him meant you didn't have to worry about your own apartment - which you had essentially been evicted of. And gave both Will and Jay peace of mind. It also meant that Jay could come around whenever he wanted because he had a key.
Will had found you both on the couch one day after his shift. Jay was watching some rerun of a hockey game and you had your legs thrown over his lap, completely passed out covered in blankets.
Even after you had gotten much better, Will insisted that you stayed with him. Jay had teased the two of you were lonely and had gotten used to each other's company and neither of you could argue because he was right. You had been cleared by Abrams to do light duty and got to play Fire Cop alongside Lieutenant Seager. Joe hadn't stopped giving you shit about it. Every time you came to Molly's he'd declared, "The fire cops here!" and envelope you in a massive hug.
After almost 8 months of doing nothing and working a desk job, you finally managed to beg Boden and Abrams to sign off on letting you back on Truck. The company had been functioning without you for so long that you worried they might eventually have to replace you. It took more convincing Jay to let you go back to work than Will. Will knew you were stronger than ever - having come with you to most of your appointments. Jay however, was worried about you getting hurt again.
You had rolled your eyes and said, "what like you do?"
Hailey had to hold in her laughter at the stare off the two of you had.
You'd sworn your brothers and Boden to secrecy, knowing they would accidentally tell the house if you didn't tell them to keep their mouths shut. You'd even gone so far as to bum a ride off Will, not wanting to let them know you were there.
You'd walked into the briefing room when Boden was declaring there was a new addition to Truck. You hadn't known he had set you up for an entrance - which made it all the more amusing for you when you walked into the briefing room and they all but exploded with excitement. Violet and Brett were the closest to you, they both jumped out of their chairs and pulled you into a hug. When you pulled away, Gallo and Ritter were pulling you into their own hugs.
When the hugs and welcomes were done, you felt like you were finally home. Things were back to normal, sure they were different than before, but maybe even better.
"Did you just throw that at my HEAD?"
With Severide CF? ❤️
Tumblr media
“Did you just throw that at my head?” You directed your stunned words at Kelly, who had, believe it or not, thrown something at your head. That something was still to be determined as you rubbed the sore spot on your temple, twisting in your position on the couch between Matt and Mouch to gape at the offender, who looked anything but regretful. In fact, he looked especially unimpressed.
“To monogamy or not to monogamy...”
All heads in the common room turned towards Matt as he picked up the object Kelly had tossed, a short stack of stapled papers, and read the title. It was in that moment, after he’d read the final word and the unimpressed expression on Kelly’s face darkened, that you had to bite your tongue to keep from snorting laughter, despite the situation you seemed to have landed yourself in.
Others had more trouble keeping their amusement at bay, a chorus of laughter echoing around the room as Matt continued to read.
“‘Lieutenant Kelly Severide would argue for the latter. Though he may seem like a family man, willing to settle down with a wife and a couple kids—’” Matt held a fist to his lips, his chest jolting with supressed laughter— “’he is in fact the opposite.’”
Hermann slapped the back of his chair with a guffawing laugh. “The hell is that?”
Kelly uncrossed his arms to grip his forehead, dragging a tired hand down his face. “It’s a smear campaign against me, that’s what it is.”
Your brother seemingly engrossed in the remainder of the sheets’ paragraphs, intermittently snickering to himself, you turned to fully face Kelly and rest your arms on the back of the couch. You attempted to appear somewhat serious, very aware Kelly was taking it as such, but every time you tried to school your features, a sentence you’d written or a word you’d typed after chuckling to yourself for a good minute floated back in your brain, and Kelly’s face suddenly seemed far more comical than he definitely intended it to be.
Mouch leant over to peer at the sheets of paper, and Cruz and Otis rushed to read over Matt’s shoulder. Kelly looked hilariously betrayed, and you knew you had to speak before you burst into laughter.
“Okay, hear me out, hear me out,” you deadpanned. Otis snorted at a particular line beside you and you clamped down on your tongue. “I got nothing.” Kelly lifted a finger to point at you, dangerously dipping his head, and you grinned, shaking a hand at him. “Joking! I’m joking! We had to write a journal article on something funny, okay? It was just practice for exam season.”
Kelly tossed his arms up in obvious protest. “So why not write about Otis’s pink underwear? Or—Mouch’s infatuation with stamps?”
Otis was too engrossed in his new reading material to object, but Mouch ripped his attention from the article for a single second to correct him. “Collection, Severide. It’s a collection.”
You allowed Kelly to see your grin. You certainly hadn’t intended on him getting hold of the article, but you could only blame yourself for that, having worked on it earlier in his office while he finished paperwork. Really, you should have set yourself a reminder to take it with you when you left, knowing Kelly liked to read your schoolwork, but Cruz had called for lunch and you’d unapologetically raced to the kitchen before the others were given the chance to eat it all.
“It’s not going anywhere,” you assured him. “I’m not gonna hand it in.” Boden walked in then with his empty plate, not bothering to ask what was going on but moving to peek over Matt’s shoulder all the same. “Did you even read it?” you asked. “Gabby says it’s good.”
Gabby glanced up with a mouthful of tomato pasta. “What?” she asked with a shrug when Kelly turned a raised eyebrow on her. “It is.”
"Yeah,” Kelly said, “I read some of it. Stopped after ‘Kelly likes to blast Britney Spears’s Womanizer when he drives to work.’”
“Spoilers!” Cruz yelled. “We’re not there yet!”
Kelly ignored him. “Is my life a gag to you?”
You contemplated that. “Your love life is.”
Not a single person reading your article reacted when Kelly strode forward and bent over the couch to grab you. You scrambled backwards, shrieking after you seemed to forget the couch ended at some point and toppling backwards onto the floor. Again, nobody moved a muscle to help. Mouch shifted into the space you’d left to gain better access to the article, and Kelly rounded the couch in quick pursuit of you.
“Casey,” he yelled as a tussle broke out between you, “rip it up!”
If you could have seen behind the arms you were shoving back and the legs you were lifting to kick at his chest, you would have seen the men’s looks of horror at Kelly’s orders.
“But—but—” Mouch quickly verbalised his panic at not yet having finished the article.
“Aw, come on,” Matt said, “it’s a work of art.”
“Don’t worry, guys,” you ground out between clenched teeth as you grappled for the upper hand. “I’ll email you the copy on my laptop!”
It was then that Kelly laughed, too taken by the situation and the pure gall of the girl he’d helped raise to not find the hilarity in it in the end.
“Absolute madcap,” he said around his laughter, reaching back to wrench the papers from an indignant-looking Matt and hitting you on the head once again. “You’re way too much trouble.”
Fandom: One Chicago
A/N: This story will put some very beloved characters into a slightly bad light so I hope you will still enjoy it for the sake of the storyline 🤗
Previous Chapter
•••
The night before, clothing pieces were flying left and right in Valentina's apartment. Her and Carver barely got a few drinks in when they decided to cut the night out short...and truth be told Valentina knew this was what he meant by "drinks not dinner".
She was also no stranger to such practices, but it was only once these antics landed her in a relationship and it was the one with Kelly, which lasted for a few good years and slightly changed the trajectory of her entire life.
The morning after, Valentina slid out of the warm bedsheets and tip toed out of the room as quite as she could. Walking into the living room, clothes were scattered all over the floor and a smirk appeared on her face as memories from the night before came in flooding her mind. She had a good time...hell even a great time, but she knew she was walking on a thin line and things could go south very easily...which she obviously didn't want to since she had just returned and finally got her life together. But for real...out of all the men in Chicago, of course she had to pick the one working with her and with her ex in the same firehouse.
As all these things were going through her mind, she got dressed and got herself ready for shift. Making her way to the kitchen and fixing herself a cup of coffee she was still deep in her thoughts when she heard footsteps approaching her...and it was no other than Carver, half dressed, having the same cheeky smirk on his face like she did minutes ago. "How nice of you to also make me a cup of coffee...", the sarcasm in his voice was loud and clear as he took the cup out of Valentina's hands and sipped out of her hot beverage. It took everything in her to not push him against a wall again and he probably noticed that, so he was closing the gap between them to the point she could feel his breath. "I...had a really, really great time...but this has to stay between us." Raising her head to his level, she managed to say all that while keeping eye contact and a serious face. Nodding in agreement, Carver took one step closer to her if that was even possible. "Tell me one thing...who's the firefighter that ruined it for me?" The question took her by surprise...slightly, but she knew what game he was playing and she wasn't one to back off. "You wouldn't want to know....and you should get going or you'll be late for shift." "Fair enough...I'll see you later then!" Carver said and pecked her cheek quickly before he left.
//
"I thought I'd be seeing you at Molly's?" Brett said as she walked into the locker room and saw Valentina sitting on the bench while tying her shoelaces. "Yeah we all did. You haven't been there since you came back." Ritter pitched in immediately after. "Yeah...ugh, something came up and I had to call it a night very quick. But I will come next time...I promise." She was a horrible liar and she knew it, but everybody else just had to be happy with that answer for now. "Chief wants us in the briefing room in 5." Cruz appeared through the door and announced.
"I'm going to the bathroom real quick and I'll meet you there." Val told Sylvie before she disappeared out of the door. She just wanted to make sure she didn't look hungover or overly tired so she splashed some cold water on her face. As her eyes were still closed she heard the door behind her open and then immediately close. "Good Morning!" Kelly's voice filled the room as they were now looking at each other through the mirror. "Morning!"
"You seemed happy when you came in this morning." He continued as he leaned against the sink crossing his arms. "Is that such a strange thing for you? To see me happy?" Why was she giving him an attitude at 8 am...she never enjoyed speaking to him like this let alone hurt him in any way. "Is this how it's going to be between us?" He asked and Valentina could feel his eyes piercing through her as she initially avoided looking at him, but she turned around and took a deep breath in, that could easily come off as annoyed. In reality she just didn'twant to melt so easily into his blue eyes...because those used to be her weakness. "Like what Kelly?"
"Like you hating me." She was almost offended by those words, because in what world would she be able to hate him? Not in this one for sure. "I don't hate you Kelly...I don't have it in me to hate you, but I am indifferent to you, because what else am I supposed to do?" She thought about this moment...about the moment where they can finally talk, get it all out and moved on, but despite all the scenarios she made up in her head she was still not ready. "You hate me because I moved on! You just left and I was supposed to guess that you will come back? I was supposed to wait?" Frustration could be heard in his words as his voice grew louder.
"You moved on with the person you assured me so many times you had nothing to do with...and I believed you. You married that person...you didn't just move on, you made a lifetime commitment to her." It was all coming out now and there was no way back. "We were together what? 6, 7 years and we never once discussed marriage because I knew you weren't that kind of guy...and then I'm gone not even 3 years and I come back...and the one person I thought I knew so well did a complete 180°." There were a lot of underlying emotions, frustrations and feelings between the two and this conversation was bringing them all out. "Exactly Val! After 7 years you just got up and left...with an excuse of an explanation I had to deal with tha-"
"You two! This is not the place to be having this conversation...I can hear you from down the hall." Hermann appeared through the door, interrupting their screaming match. The room fell into silence and Valentina felt her breath get rapid so she quickly made her way out. Arriving into the briefing room she realized she was late...really late and Boden did not look happy. A few minutes later after the meeting was done the chief turned to look towards her. "And since Pierce and Carver were late, they have the honor of cleaning Ambo and Truck inside out."
'Of course he was late too.' She thought to herself as she looked to her right seeing the man she woke up next to earlier today. Getting the cleaning supplies she felt his presence behind her. "You know why I'm late...why are you late?" He asked and pretty much cornered her into the supply closet. "Figured I find a way to get stuck with you without making it obvious." He loved her attitude and she loved the tension that was building between them naturally everytime they were in each other's presence. "Now will you let me go clean the Ambo or are you going to push me into the wall?" If they had a choice the answer would be clear, but they didn't so he moved to the side for her.
//
"You're an awfully punctual person, what happened earlier? You know Boden hates when we're late." Brett asked as she watched her partner scrub every inch of the Ambo. "If I tell you, you can't make any faces, you can't judge me nor will you speak about this to anyone..." Valentina said stopping from whatever she was doing and saw Brett nodding in agreement. "I slept with Carver." She barely got the words before Sylvie gasped dramatically. "Sorry you can continue..." "And then I ran into Kelly in the bathroom this morning and...it got ugly to say the least." As she was saying all this out loud she realized how foolish the whole situation sounded...the situation or her? "My...very humble opinion? One or the other. Don't dig a deeper grave for yourself than you already have. I can't tell you to fight for Severide because that's a married man right there, but I also know what the two of you had in the past...or just move on. Your new friend seems to be helping you with that." Sometimes she hated how painfully honest Sylvie was with her, but who else was going to knock some sense into her if not her very own best friend. "Come on, I'll help you finish up...you already look like you're struggling." Brett pitched in making her partner let out a relieved sigh.
As Valentina wanted to continue her work she couldn't help but hear a pretty serious conversation going down a few feet away from her. "House fire in Pilsen going wrong? Really?" Stella's voice could be heard asking and a frown appeared on Valentina's face not realizing who was on the other end of the conversation. "I don't appreciate you lying...I don't like liars especially when I'm trying to make them part of my crew." She continued and Valentina just grew more confused and curious as she unintentionally eavesdropped. "You need to be honest with me for this to work...so go ahead." "All due respect Lieutenant, but it's a private matter and I guess I will just shut up from now on." Carver's voice could finally be heard and Valentina was immediately felt a bitter taste in her mouth...she knew what they were talking about and for some reasons it pissed her off badly.
If there was one thing that her first few weeks taught Sylvie, it was that she wasn’t set up for desk work. She could do the job, but she lived for hearing about the calls from everyone. As nice as it was to leave at five every day, she missed her uncomfortable bunk.
Kelly hovered around her multiple times, checking if she needed anything and bringing her plates of lunch. She tried waving it away - most of the clerical staff didn’t eat with the firefighters and paramedics - but he insisted she ate. It was a weird mixture of being with the folks who went on calls, but she was out of the loop on a lot of things. Plus, she met the folks from the other shifts so she got to learn a little more from them.
Her cast was off and she was doing physical therapy to regain the strength in it. Her ribs were healed, and the day she was able to lift Andy up and cuddle him made her so much happier than she thought she would have been. He grasped onto her and held on, his head in her shoulder as they both enjoyed it. She caught sight of Kelly watching them, tears in his eyes as he took the portrait in front of him in.
Her belly kept getting bigger, the pregnancy that she’d been roughly able to hide now impossible to. It was uncomfortable at the best of times, the weight in front of her different to anything else she’d ever had. Kelly had started helping her rub moisturiser in, giving her a massage. He was there and present for everything they had to do, and she couldn’t be more grateful.
But it was time for their anatomy scan, to fully meet their baby and get to grips with really becoming parents. They’d spent the week before explaining the idea of a baby to Andy. He didn’t really understand it fully, but he’d started running up to Sylvie when she was sitting down and yelling “BABY” to her.
Walking into Med she felt safe, no visible injuries anymore and nothing that would mean she had to stay behind. Everything was going well, flutters in her stomach making it so obvious to her that yes, this baby was growing. Kelly couldn’t feel them yet, but she thought he’d feel it soon. They came into the scan room, Sylvie sitting up on the bed in the middle of the room as Kelly sat beside her.
“Are you scared?” He asked, his voice a bare whisper.
“Terrified. I keep remembering when Gabby was at this stage. But I’m not her, and this pregnancy isn’t the one that ended up with Andy. I’ve never seen someone have an easy pregnancy. We’ll see how it goes from here. But we’re together, right?”
“Even without the baby I’d still be here. You’re not getting away that easily, Brett.”
The technician arrived in, smiling at Sylvie and Kelly as she set up the machine.
“This is your first pregnancy I saw on your chart. Are you excited to be parents?” She asked, Sylvie nodding.
“We’ve got a seventeen month old, but yeah, we are. I’m excited to make sure this little one is safe and healthy.”
“And so I can win the bet with everyone,” Kelly interjected, an eyebrow raise in response. “We work together, our coworkers are convinced she’s having a girl because every child born to our friends has been a boy so far. Purely because of that I think it’s a boy.”
“You just don’t want to have to deal with being the only girl dad. You’re better with Andy!” It was the strange look from the technician that made her continue, addressing her instead. “We adopted our godson after his parents died in a car crash. So first pregnancy, second child.”
“Aww, I love that. This will be cold, but lets see this baby.”
The scan took a lot longer than any of the others, the technician taking measurements and watching how the baby was growing. Sylvie stared at their child on the screen, Kelly gripping her hand in both of his. Every few moments he’d press a kiss to her fingers, squeezing lightly as he stared. She’d have sworn that there was tears in his eyes as he watched the screen, a hand waving and Sylvie shivering at it.
“Can you feel it?”
“Yeah. You’ll feel it soon too.”
“And lets hear that heartbeat. Do you want to know the sex?”
“Yes.” They answered simultaneously as they listened to the pitter patter of the heartbeat, the rapid thumps that told them their child was right there and would be ok.
“Let’s see if if this child is shy. Oh, nope, he’s not.”
“It’s Kelly Severide’s child, of course he’s not…he?” Sylvie trailed off and stared at the smiling technician.
“You’re having a perfectly healthy baby boy. Andy will have a little brother.”
They got the photos printed and stared at them as they waited to go into the doctor, looking carefully at their son.
“I know we’ll probably argue about a middle name, but he’s Matthew, isn’t he?” Sylvie asked, watching Kelly force himself to hold his emotions together.
“Yeah. Fuck. I always thought if I ever had a kid I’d have Matt and Andy here with me. They’d tell me I was doing the wrong thing, stop me from killing my kid. But they’re gone.”
“We’ll keep them alive for the boys. They’ll learn all about their dad’s friends, about the men we named them after. So Andy can know about his dad, and our Matt can know about the two of them. Our boys aren’t going to grow up not knowing about them.”
“It’s weird, y’know? Andy’s ours, but he’s yours. I don’t have anything legal for him.”
“We’ll fix that. Before Matt arrives.”
“The name suits him.” Kelly rested his hand on her bump, and they sat with their joint grief in the waiting room, the pain hitting them again. This time instead of dealing with it alone they held onto each other, encouraging the other to know that there was someone there.
When they came back into the office their hands stayed linked, even when the doctor came in. Sylvie refused to let go of the comfort that Kelly gave her.
“I can confirm everything looks normal here, folks. Baby Brett is growing well, and you’re dating at twenty two weeks. Does that sound about right?” She asked, Sylvie nodding.
“Yeah, it’s right. Kind of hard to believe at this point that I’m more than halfway there.”
“It’s just going to go faster. Have you got anything set up yet?” Kelly nodded at the question.
“We’ve got all the furniture from our oldest, so that’s easier. Plus a lot of his clothes I think.”
“I thought this was…” She trailed off, flicking through Sylvie’s file.
“My first pregnancy. We adopted our eldest last year.” Her words left no space to argue with her, a nod from the doctor.
“Ah, understood. Thanks.”
The rest of the appointment went more smoothly, and they slipped into Kelly’s car. His hand barely left hers apart from when she got into the car, and even when he got into his side he took it again.
“I meant what I said, you know.” Kelly turned his head as they were at a stop light. “I’m getting in touch with the court, we don’t even need a lawyer. You’re Andy’s dad, you’re adopting him. As long as you want to.”
“Yeah…yeah I do. I didn’t think you wanted me to do it.”
“There’s nobody else I’d rather do it. I mean it.”
They were quiet on the rest of the drive, both caught in their own thoughts. It was so much to deal with, Sylvie’s mind spinning. They’d started running as soon as the relationship had started, and part of that scared her. But as she thought about it it was completely right. They’d had so many false starts, and was it really them if they didn’t rush through the traditional relationship stuff?
“Where are we going?” Sylvie asked as they passed the turn they should have taken instead heading towards Wicker Park.
“Molly’s. Herrmann asked me to stop by, is that ok?”
“Sure.”
She pulled out her phone and started going through the list of things she’d need that she’d written. Most of it she already had from Andy so she could delete a lot of it, especially the clothes. They had enough anyway. A little part of her was disappointed that she wouldn’t get to do the usual pregnancy things, but it was how things happened. She’d still rope Kelly into coming shopping with her for a new stroller that could fit the two boys in it. But they had to get a toddler bed for Andy, turning what had been Kelly’s room into the new nursery for Matt. They could see how things went as time continued.
When they pulled up to Molly’s the lights were off, Sylvie staring at the bar.
“Are you sure he’s here?”
“He’s doing inventory. Coming in? And are we gonna tell him the sex?” Kelly smiled that crooked smile, and she felt her heart beat a little faster.
“He won’t give up if we don’t tell him, so yeah. Let’s do it.”
Kelly walked into the bar first, holding the door open as Sylvie came through it. But inside were all their friends and coworkers, balloons and smiles on faces as they yelled surprise at her.
“What…what is this?” She asked, staring at them all.
“Your baby shower. It’s your first pregnancy, you’re getting spoilt.” Donna Boden was the first to greet her, arms wrapping around Sylvie with a smile on her face. Andy ran straight to her and Sylvie lifted him up, balancing him around her bump while she still could.
There was a pile of gifts for her, most of them things that were actually for Sylvie, rather than for the baby. There were pampering sets and boxes of chocolates, along with three really large boxes of diapers. They were from premie to a few months old, Sylvie smiling at them.
“This is from everyone at 51. If it doesn’t work we’ll get you the store credit and you can pick what you want, but they said it’d be ideal for you.” Boden pushed a huge box into the middle of the room, Sylvie staring at it. Kelly looked just as surprised to see it, but everyone was waiting for them to open it.
“Did we miss everything? We got stuck in traffic!” Sylvie turned to see her mom and dad rushing into the bar, slightly red faced and worried. But she grinned, both of them hugging her as tightly as they could.
“Gamma! Hi Gamma!” Andy said, insisting on getting into his grandmother’s arms. Monica just took him, revelling in the hug from her grandson.
“Mom, Dad, this is Kelly.”
“Mr and Mrs Brett.” He held out his hand, John taking it and shaking once before pulling Kelly in for a hug. Monica did the same with her free arm, kissing his cheek and making the younger man flush.
“You’re just in time, Mr and Mrs Brett. Do you want to sit?” Violet brought them around so Kelly and Sylvie could open the present, ripping the large sheets of wrapping paper from around it.
It was a multi child stroller, like one of the ones Sylvie had really wanted but thought they couldn’t justify. There was space for two children in it, and a standing board so if Andy wanted to stand as she pushed they could. The smile couldn’t leave her face as she looked at it.
“Thank you. All of you.” She couldn’t quite believe it, Kelly pressing a kiss to her temple as he smiled. He gave her a look and she nodded quickly, letting him give this news to their friends, their family.
“We found out today that we’re having a boy. We’re gonna name him Matthew.” The room burst into applause, tears in the eyes of the people who’d been close to Matt and Gabby. The rest of the afternoon was filled with hugs, people filing out until Kelly, Sylvie, her parents, and Andy were some of the last there.
“I’ll use the minivan to get the box to your place, don’t worry. Go spend time with your parents,” Herrmann told her, giving her a final hug. “We’re all happy for you. You know that, right?”
“I know. Thank you.”
They walked outside, Andy holding Kelly’s hand and grinning as he did.
“Do you want to get dinner? There’s a great diner a couple of blocks away, we stop in for milkshakes every so often.” There was an awkwardness between Kelly and her parents, but Sylvie was proud of him for making the effort with them.
“That’d be nice. It’s later than we thought, we should get on the road.”
“Stay with us.” Sylvie gawked at Kelly when he finished speaking. “Andy hasn’t seen you in a couple of months, we’ve a spare bedroom. If there isn’t anything you specifically can’t do here, stay with us.”
Monica and John mulled it over for a moment but nodded, looking at the little family. “Thank you, that’d be wonderful.”
They sat at a booth, Andy on the edge in a high chair. He kept grasping at everyone’s food, not content to eat his own toddler sized grilled cheese. But the mood was high among the four adults, things easing between them all. Even that evening once Andy was in bed they sat on the couch and watched a movie. Sylvie felt weird being held by Kelly with her parents in the room but she pushed that weirdness away, taking his hand and putting it on her belly when she could feel Matt’s kicks. He couldn’t feel them yet, but he smiled every time she did it.
The next morning Kelly had shift, Sylvie going into work with him. Cindy still took Andy for the full twenty four hours so they could keep him in a routine, and he wasn’t happy saying goodbye to his grandparents. But he got into the car with Kelly, Sylvie hugging them goodbye.
“Thanks for being here,” she murmured to her mom, a tight squeeze in response.
“It’s not every day our eldest has her baby shower. We’re so proud of you. And Kelly’s a good man. I know there’s been issues but I think you’re both happy now.”
“We are. I’m lucky.”
“Good. I’ll tell you when we get home.”
“Love you, Mom.” She pulled her mom in for another squeeze before doing the same to her dad.
“We love you too. Don’t be late.”
It was a quick drive, dropping Andy off and heading to 51. Before they got out of the car Sylvie pulled Kelly across to her, giving him a kiss. They tended to stop any PDA before they reached the firehouse, neither particularly comfortable with it in work. He looked at her confusedly before they got out of the car.
“My mom said you’re a good man.” His face brightened, the two holding hands as they got inside.
Her shift passed quickly, a wave to her friends and a squeeze of Kelly’s hand before she left. It was her normal night alone when Kelly was on shift, curling up on the couch with popcorn and House Hunters. Every few minutes the bowl on her belly would shake slightly as Matt nudged her. It was barely noticeable, but she knew she had to tell Kelly as soon as she could. He’d want to try feel the movements.
The next morning she got in early, Squad just returning from a call. When Kelly saw her he pulled her into a cuddle, holding her tightly against his chest.
“Bad call?”
“The worst. I just need to know you’re here.”
She held onto him, giving him the comfort and support he needed even in the middle of the app floor. He needed her and if she could give it to him then she would.
“I love you,” Sylvie whispered as he finally let go, her hand cupping his sooty cheek.
“I love you too. So much.” She got on tiptoes to kiss him, the bump almost but not quite getting in the way of what she wanted to do.
All too soon it was time for her to start work, a final goodbye to Kelly and checking in on everyone else who’d been at the fire. It was a gas leak in a home that had exploded, a family gone in a matter of seconds. She hugged and cared for everyone the same, making sure they knew she was there for them, But she had to sit and work, staring at her computer when she wanted to be there with her boyfriend and son, making sure Kelly was ok.
That night when she got home from work she wasn’t sure what was going on. The living area of the condo was quiet, nobody around.
“Kelly? Andy?  Where are you?”
“Mama! Bed Mama!” She followed Andy’s voice to her bedroom, stopping still at the doorway. Andy was in a mini suit, a grin on his face. Kelly was in a matching one, a yellow tie around his neck as he held Andy and smiled at Sylvie staring at them. The room was lit by electric candles, the soft light making it glow.
“I’m not dressed for anything fancy.” The words slipped out of Sylvie’s mouth as she watched them, Kelly smiling wider.
“You always look fancy. But this is you and me, and our boys. Because I want to remind you that we love you. There’s a dress and shoes on the bed, we’ve got dinner reservations.”
He left her to get dressed, Sylvie slipping on the full skirted outfit and doing a twirl. Kelly hadn’t left her much time but she did the most basic makeup before stepping out into the living room. Her boys were there waiting for her, a toothy grin on Andy’s face seeing her.
“You look beautiful.” Kelly kissed her gently, and Matt moved in her belly. She took her boyfriend’s hand and pushed it against where their second child had kicked, waiting for Matt to do it again. He did, Kelly brightening even more.
“That’s our boy?”
“That’s him. Let’s go to these reservations.”
As she walked out of the condo carrying Andy, Kelly close behind her, there was nothing else Sylvie Brett could have wished for in that moment. Despite the trials and struggles she had her boys and she couldn’t wait for their family to grow and be permanent.
When the buzzer on the condo went Sylvie leaned back, frustration clear on her face.
“It’s ok, I’ll get it. Finish feeding Matt.” Kelly pushed a kiss to the top of her head as he went past, Andy holding his hand.
“Happy birthday baby!” Her mom and dad were the first at the door, Violet and Kevin just behind them to celebrate Andy’s second birthday. When they’d decided to do a birthday party for Andy she’d thought it’d be a disaster, but he deserved a day to himself.
Matt was born right on his due date, a birth that went off without a hitch with Kelly there to cut the cord. Their family had expanded, Andy getting used to the baby better than either of his parents had expected.
But the previous night, after they’d come home from the courthouse with Andy’s adoption confirmed, Kelly had gotten down on one knee with Sylvie’s original wedding ring to ask her to marry him.
She’d hidden the ring in the back of her nightstand, a memory that she didn’t know if she wanted to remember. But he’d found it when getting something for her, and his words when he proposed would never be forgotten.
“It’s probably bad karma to use a second hand ring but I know this means as much to you as it does to me. I love you, and I love our sons. I love this family that we’ve built together. I know that it’s not exactly the way we expected things to go from that night in Vegas, but I can’t imagine my life without you. Will you please marry me?” It was cleaned and in a new ring box, the shiny rose gold and silver ring in his hand. It was much plainer than a normal engagement ring, but for her it was perfect.
“Yes. It would always be yes.” She’d kissed him deeply, holding him close and remembering that this time was for keeps.
“Can I see my youngest grandson?” Monica was straight over to Sylvie, arms out to reach for Matt. Sylvie just smiled at her mom, indicating to the bottle in her hand but it was no match for Monica who lifted him without skipping a beat in the feeding. She’d settled on the couch with the baby in her arms when she spotted the glint of metal on Sylvie’s hand.
“Is that…?” She trailed off, the others gathering around at Monica’s words. Kelly slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her close with a wry smile.
“I asked Sylvie to marry me last night, and she said yes.” It was cheers and celebration before the party truly got underway, their friends from 51 and outside of work - the few there were - there with them.
Andy ran semi wild with Terrance and Kenny, the two older boys pulling him along and playing. He got gifts from everyone, “tank yewww” drawled as he took them and handed them over to one of his parents. When Christie and Antonio arrived they hugged him almost as tightly as Kelly and Sylvie did before speaking to them, nods and smiles between the four adults.
They’d explained to Andy that he was adopted, but he didn’t fully understand it yet. A photo of Matt and Gabby on their wedding day was on the wall, beside Kelly and Sylvie with Andy. His birth parents would never be forgotten, and Sylvie knew they’d be proud of who he was becoming. They’d stepped up and he would always know that he had two sets of parents who loved him.
It was when she was putting out the cake that her ring was spotted by the rest of the guests, sly comments and hugs to her and Kelly. They sang happy birthday to Andy, Matt in her arms as the four got in for a picture with a grinning toddler. It was one of the pictures that would end up on their wall, their little family there happy and healthy and whole.
That night, after a sugar high two year old was in bed and they were curled up on the couch with Matt against her chest, Sylvie cuddled into Kelly’s shoulder.
“I love you,” she murmured, a kiss his initial response.
“I love you too. I’m sorry for how I acted when you first joined 51, you didn’t deserve it.”
“You’ve nothing to be sorry for.” She turned around to look into the eyes of her fiancé, the father of her kids, the same eyes she saw in their youngest every day. “Us? This family? This wasn’t supposed to happen. But now it has, and we get to live together and be happy. I’m going to choose to be happy.”
“That sounds pretty perfect. We’ll choose to be happy together.”
He took her left hand, raising it to his lips and pressing a kiss to the cool metal of her ring. “This is back where it belongs.”
“And yours is going back soon too.”
They sat there quietly, light snuffles from Matt the only thing to break the silence, as Sylvie tried counting all her blessings. But soon she wasn’t able to keep count, smiling as she leaned back and relaxed.
chapter 03 | NEVER TOO OLD | CHRISTOPHER HERRMANN
-
chapter 03: you look nice today!
-
+-~+-~ Christopher's POV ~-+~-+
It was the next day, Saturday, I didn't have a shift today which I was happy about because after the day I had yesterday, I don't think I could handle anymore of that Bailey kid within 24 hours. For some reason I had left the curtains to my only window in my apartment open, so when the light came in from the sun, it hit me directly in the face.
I groaned and rolled over the sun wasn't in my face anymore, I heard a text notification sound coming from my sound, I dreaded who it could be because I didn't really want to go out today. I sat up and looked at my phone to see who the text was from and it was from Darren.
-
* Darren *
hey chris! hopefully i didn't wake u up, u should be up anyways btw 😈. was wondering if u wanna go out today with me and some of the guys. it's alright if u dont feel up to it. also dont worry nathan isnt coming with us lol. :)
I chuckled a little reading the last part of the text, Darren assuring that Bailey isn't going. Then I groaned and threw my head back on my pillow, not knowing how to reply to Darren's text. I really did hate letting Darren down and saying that I'm busy, which is a lie, I just never felt like going out. I'd much rather just sit my dark apartment and drink, which I know isn't the best but was the only thing that made me feel better.
I started typing out an excuse to not go out, but then deleted it, debating on how to answer him. I decided to actually say yes to his offer of going out with some of the guys today.
Almost immediately after I replied to Darren's text, I saw that he was already typing back.
I put my phone aside on the bed and rubbed my forehead. Deciding I should take a shower, I started stripping out of my clothes while heading to the bathroom, shutting the door behind me out of habit, usually Cindy would be in the other room... I shook the thought out of my head and turned on the water of the shower, finding a good hot temperature I got in. I swept my hair backward so it was off of my forehead, I washed my hair quickly and scrubbed the rest of me, not wanting to be late to meeting Darren.
I hopped out of the shower a few minutes later and wrapped a towel around my waist and used another towel to dry my hair, I opened the bathroom door and stepped back into my bedroom. I took some fresh clothes out of my dresser and quickly put them on, after I picked up my old clothes off the floor and threw them into a basket to wash later. I picked out a white t-shirt with a flannel over it, some beige jeans and some converse, definitely not an outfit I would usually wear but I didn't really care how I looked. I decided to ditch breakfast and to head straight to Millennium Park. I tied my shoes and grabbed my keys, quickly leaving the apartment and walking down the stairs to get to my car.
I eventually made it to Millennium Park, I parked my car and walked around the park until I saw Darren.
"Hey Chris!" I heard faintly and I turned my head around and saw Darren waving me over to some park tables. I started walking over towards Darren's direction, eventually meeting him, I took in who else was there. Which included of: Casey, Severide, Cruz, Capp, Mouch and... wait.. Bailey? Darren told me he wouldn't be here...
"Here Chris, sit down here." Darren told me, scooting over so I could sit next to him, Mouch being at my other side. I sat down and eyed Bailey who was sitting across from me, next to him was Casey and Severide who had their fingers intertwined, Capp next to them, and Cruz was on the other side of Mouch.
"Darren, you said he wouldn't be here." I whispered into Darren's ear, pointing to Bailey with my eyes.
"I didn't know he would be here, I think Capp invited him or something." Darren whispered replied, I looked at Capp and he smiled and gave me 2 thumbs up. I rolled my eyes and adverted my eyes from him.
"Hey Lieutenant! It's nice seeing you today!" Bailey said and I sighed inside.
"Hey candidate.." I replied hesitantly, which got the attention of Casey.
"No need for formalities here right guys? We're not working today." Casey said, kissing Severide's cheek afterwards.
"I guess so." I mumbled.
"You look nice today Herrmann, glad you decided to come." Bailey- no Nathan told me, which I wish he didn't say because I could feel a blush creeping upon my cheeks.
"Thanks Nathan, you do too." I replied confidently, it would be rude to not compliment him back too right?
"Why thank you, I try." He responded with a wink, which made me groan quietly and tried to hide my face yet again. Why did bodies react like this? I hate it.
"You ok Chris?" Darren asked me with an eyebrow raised and with a slight grin on his face. I shoved him playfully and rolled my eyes.
"So, does anyone have any plans for the rest of the day?" Cruz asked everyone.
"Me and Matt are going out for dinner tonight, then maybe head to Molly's." Kelly replied to the question.
"Yeah, me and Trudy plan on going to Molly's tonight." Mouch said.
"Sounds good! How about we all meet at Molly's at like 9 tonight?" Cruz suggested and everyone gave an approval.
"Me and Chris will be there, right?" Darren asked me.
"Yeah, sounds like a plan." I replied, just wanting to go to drink and get lost in my thoughts, I wouldn't admit that to anyone though.
"So, Nathan what's your story?" Casey asked the British man.
"Well I was born in England, obviously, my younger sister came over here to the States for college? That's what you Americans call it right? Anyway, I followed her here, she goes to the University of Chicago. Once she moved here I decided to join the Fire Academy, I had always wanted to go on more of an ambitious career path. And yeah that was 2 years ago, and here I am now." Nathan explained.
"You got a girlfriend Bailey?" Cruz questioned afterwards.
"Haha no, unfortunately no boyfriend either." He laughed and my eyes widened, so he was into guys... I looked at Darren, who was already eyeing me.
"Oh wow, I think Mouch and Capp are the only straight people here!" Cruz exclaimed and laughed, which caused Nathan to look at me, but then he looked back at Cruz.
"You into guys Cruz?" He asked Cruz, who nodded.
"Yeah, I used to be in a relationship with Otis, he used to be a firefighter here actually..." Cruz got quiet near the end of his sentence.
"Oh yeah? What happened to him?" Nathan asked, being intrigued. Cruz shifted in his spot uncomfortably.
"Otis was one of the best firefighters out there, he was a kind friend and an even better firefighter. That memorial in front of the firehouse driveway? That's for Otis." I replied for Cruz who mouthed 'thank you' at me. I saw Nathan's face change from intrigued to sad, probably realizing what I meant.
"Oh, I saw that memorial when I came to the Firehouse yesterday, it said Brian though didn't it?" Nathan questioned me.
"Yes, his name wasn't actually Otis, that's just what we called him. His name was Brian Zvonecek." I answered, Nathan then nodded in understandment.
"I'm sorry Cruz, that I brought him up." Nathan apologized to Cruz, who shook his head.
"No worries Nathan, it's been a couple of years, I'm married, but I still miss him." Cruz told him.
"Yeah, I'm sure he was a great guy." Nathan stated.
Everyone talked amongst each other for what was apparently a couple hours. It suddenly became the time where everyone usually eats dinner. I had then realized that I hadn't eaten anything since yesterday morning. I decided to fare everyone goodbye and go to get myself something to eat, since my stomach was growling now.
I eventually left the group and walked back toward my car. I got in and headed towards a sandwich shop not far from where I already was. Once I got there, I parked on the side of the road and headed inside. All I ordered was a turkey sandwich and a bag of chips and went back to my car. I ate in silence as the radio started playing some music. I guess I apparently zoned out because the next thing I knew a lady was knocking on my window, I rolled the window down afterward.
"Are you okay sir?" She asked me, which had me confused.
"Yes, I'm fine? Why?" I questioned.
"You've been parked here for hours, I just wanted to make sure you were okay. Have a nice evening." She replied and walked away. I rolled up my window questionably and looked at my car's clock. 7:30 pm. How was it 7:30 pm already? Was I really sat here for that long? I sighed and decided to head over to Molly's a bit early.
I drove to Molly's and parked in my usual spot and headed inside, luckily I didn't have to work the bar tonight. I went inside and saw it wasn't too busy, which is nice. Of course no one from the Firehouse would be there yet because Cruz scheduled us all to meet here at 9. I decided to get a pint and sit by myself at a table, since I'm one of the owner's I get my drinks for free, which is just what I need right now.
Eventually, people started pouring into the bar and it was already 9 o'clock. I hadn't realized I had gone through 6 pints already. I decided I wanted to get more so I unsteadily stood up and walked over to the bar to order some more rounds for myself. I noticed Darren and Nathan were already at the bar chatting, I quickly got my beers and avoided them, wobbly walking back to my table to drink alone.
A guy and his many, many beers. What more could a guy ask for?!
