SCIENCE EDUCATION NONPROFIT FUNDRAISER POST

Hey everyone, I run a science education nonprofit in Florida called Sidewalk Science Center. I created SSC back in July 2018, and to this day, host FREE sessions of science experiments, telescoping, and other forms of science outreach 3-4 days per week. We do this at playgrounds, parks, beaches, outdoor malls, and other public spaces.

The mission of SSC is to provide regular and reliable access to educational tools and resources in public spaces. As of this writing, I have personally hosted free sessions of SSC a total of 390 times, as well as more than five dozen private events for families, the Girl Scouts, schools, and other organizations. In mid-November, I saw my 50,000th visitor!

We're in the middle of our end-of-year fundraising campaign. We have a goal to raise $5,500 by December 31, 2022. These funds will cover all of our expected business operation costs for 2023. As of this writing, we have raised $1,932.54, which is 35% of our goal. This amount alone covers all of our website, email, insurance, printing, and data storage costs for 2023, plus some of our physical and online marketing costs for the upcoming year.

One of our larger purposes for doing this is to increase scientific visibility, literacy, and overall engagement. Science is often relegated to schools and museums, but where else do we encounter it on a day-to-day basis, actively thinking about and practicing it? By placing SSC in spaces where people already visit and congregate, we hope to help improve the interest, support, and ability in science literacy throughout all levels of society.

In 2023 we will also start gathering volunteer educators to operate standard SSC sessions. We will also offer paid positions through our volunteer base, as a significant source of our revenue comes from paid private events. All educators will take our self-designed training courses that cover performing public science outreach, public science communication, and how to navigate and maintain civil discourse with pseudoscientists and misinformation in public spaces.

Going forward, we want to open regular SSC locations around the state of Florida, the US at large, and eventually, the world. Creating these spaces has been an incredible experience that truly impacts the communities we serve, and levels the playing field for underprivileged communities, allowing everyone to use resources and have experiences they otherwise might not have access to at home or even school.

Monday morning up early to set out our day, given we are here in Stockholm for 36 hours only. The mist here is as thick as any we have experienced anywhere, making the streets slippery with the stone walkways the worst. Not to be beaten in our scouting exercise Allan sought some cover by walking through the Central train station. Big mistake, as he got lost. This train station is huge covering at least six city blocks on various levels with a bus terminal thrown in.

Finally found his way home we set off back to the station to buy some medicine for Rhondda, who still has a horrible cough that keeps her awake at night. Chemist soughted we went to the local visitor centre only to find out that no tour buses run on Monday through to Wednesday. Go figure, guess tourists only come here Thursday to Sunday.

This meant that we had to do a lot of walking so set off to the City Hall, home of the “Nobel Prize”. This place, while simple, is beautiful and when explained the various reasons things are as they are you understand why the country is so proud of the building

Back outside we walked to what we thought was the palace only to find out it was a museum which was closed. Guess tourists only come Thursday to Sunday. From here we continued to walk through the old town arriving at the Palace, which was closed. Guess tourists only come Thursday to Sunday.

Moving on we crossed another bridge (240 bridges within the city) where we came across an Aquaduck tour which we jumped on. Was great doing a drive around on both land and water in the bay. Some great sites with a great tour guide who told some great stories involving history and some gossip. Loved the gossip.

Rhondda will have done another 10 kilometre walk as we strolled through the city shopping mall and then checking out somewhere to eat tonight.

As far as our accommodation goes we are in the World Trades Centre precinct and it is very prestigious although covering one block of the underground train station. Our room though is best described as a shoe box with a bath. The bed takes up three walls covering over half of the floor space. No ability to make Rhondda her morning cup of tea or a fridge for my medicines. Serious, it is the second worst place we have stayed on this holiday. Even a beer costs A$14 (converted from Krone). Pretty sober right now. Haha the cost of living here is ridiculous and after paying a small fortune for our meals and drinks on Monday, basically shamed by waiter because I would not tip. We had waited ten minutes for a table, fifteen minutes for our first drink.

The set up of the inner city is strange at first but after you walk around you get the gist of what they are trying to do. Roads that run east to west have been tunnelled out with roads that run north to south at a raised level. All buildings start from street level and the people move freely between both levels when shopping and moving around through numerous escalators, lifts and stairs. The traffic flows so much smoother as there are very few traffic lights.

Currently we are sitting at the airport waiting for our flight to Amsterdam and have just been told they have over sold the seats so we need to make sure we are on the flight.

Walvis Bay, Namibia, South West Africa

We arrived in Walvis Bay on May 31st and spent 2 days in this delightful place. It is so much different from the other places we visited in West Africa that it is difficult to explain. The place only has 85,000 inhabitants but it is modern and clean with no evidence of the extensive poverty observed in the other West Africa places we visited. Namibia was a German colony but everyone spoke English as well as a language they called Afrikaans which is a mixture of Germany and Dutch. Walvis Bay is situated on a huge bay that is apparently used as a storage yard for ships and drilling rigs not in use.

On the first day we just visited the town and a large brand new very modern shopping mall. The natives had set up a bazaar on the side walk outside the pier’s gates and I found some raw Lapis and turquoise that was being sold by a native 30 year old Ovahimba woman in her native dress. I bought the stones for ten dollars and she let me take a photo. It is a beautiful image but I don’t think I can post it because she is bare breasted. There is very little water in Namibia and she told me she has never taken a bath but rubs her body with sand to keep herself clean.

On the second day I took a 4 wheel drive tour out to a place called Moon Valley. On the drive out we passed through some of the most desolate countryside I have ever seen. Pure desert pavement with huge dunes. The driver told us the dunes move about three meters a year. The Japanese tried to build a rail line through the desert in 1927 and it was covered with sand in two years so was abandoned. There were two big water lines that were along the road that go out to two Uranium mines owned by the Chinese and Australians. After a drive of about 50 miles we got to Moon Valley which is part of two National Parks and it is a Geologist delight. Large fully exposed weathered granite peaks covered with lava intrusions with very little vegetation on them. Much like the badlands of South Dakota but made out of granite instead of sandstone. The only vegetation was lichens. Over 60 species of lichens have been identified living in the region. There was also a very rare plant called Welwitschia mirabilis that is only found in the wild in Namibia. I put a photo of both the male and female plant below.

We stopped and had lunch at a place called Goanikontes Oasis which was an old Germany plantation first settled in 1849. It is now a resort and camp on the Swakopmund River right in the middle of the Namib Naukluft and Dorob National Parks Moon Valley. It would be fun to go and stay at the camp for awhile. The land scape is amazing and apparently there is a lot of African wildlife early and late in the day. We then visited the town of Swakopmund which is a beach resort about 15 miles North if Walvis Bay. It is full of beautiful old German colonial architecture that has been well maintained and preserved. It was founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German South West Africa. Finally we visited a large sand dune called Dine 5 where you could ride a dune buggy.

The whole area around Walvis Bay is a desert but after being in other West Africa nations for the past two week this place was a real delight.

Go on a city bike ride

You can rent a bike in Philadelphia, or you can bring your own. There are several places around town where you can pick up a rental, including at Independence National Historic Park, the Schuylkill River Trail and Brewerytown Bicycles.

Bike trails and bike lanes are available throughout Center City and other neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Bike safety tips include wearing a helmet (required by law), using lights at night and signaling before turning or stopping. There are also numerous historical sites throughout the area that make for great day trips from Philadelphia if you want something closer than Amish Country or Hershey Park but still want something fun to do outside of your hotel room!

Wayne

Wayne is a neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was named after the American Revolutionary War general Anthony Wayne and is often referred to as "the birthplace of America". In 1777, General George Washington led his troops through Wayne on their way to victory at the Battle of Germantown, which took place just two miles away from the start point of this hike.
