Day 11: seven/gone

Taako gets into a little pickle, but it's nothing he can't handle. He'll be back on the ship in no time

Every time Taako thinks he's seen everything, something else always has to happen.

They're a couple dozen cycles into their own personal purgatory, and he and Magnus are out scouting. Magnus is up ahead, clearing a path through the brush, when Taako's foot catched on a root and he falls forward. He throws his hands out to catch himself, but instead of landing on the squishy moss floor of the wilderness, he hits stone. He looks around and finds himself in some sort of subterranean cave system, with no indication of how he ended up here.

It's a gruelling two days as he hikes through, hoping for an opening somewhere. He has rations, fortunately, and there doesn't seem to be any sort of life down there aside from some bioluminescent moss that he's careful to stay away from. Eventually he sees daylight, and emerges back to the surface. There's a deep slash cut into a tree a short distance ahead of him that he recognises from their scouting, when Magnus got startled by a bird and swung wildly. It's what prompted Taako to trail behind him.

With his bearings, he heads back to the clearing the ship was in. He reaches it just as the sun's beginning to set.

It's empty.

The ship's gone. There isn't so much as an indent in the grass from where it was.

He fishes in his bag for his communicator. It didn't work down in the cave, but it hopefully should now. He fiddles with the dial until the frequency picks up another one of their comms.

“Hellooooo,” he sing-songs, “Taako to Starblaster, where the fuck did you go?”

The connection crackles, silence on the other end. Then, “Taako?”

Lup's voice is meek, which is very unlike her. “The one and only, Lulu. I thought we were gonna hang out in the forest for at least a week. Where'd you go? Am I in the wrong clearing?”

“You-” her voice catches, and she sobs, “you're alive?”

“Why wouldn't I be? I thought we all learned after the hide and seek incident not to jump to conclusions after a few days.”

“A few- Koko, it's been seven months.” Her voice still shakes some as she talks, and he can picture the tear tracks running down her cheeks, but she's not actively crying anymore, “Magnus came back and said you vanished. He had no idea what happened or where you went. We waited for almost two weeks before we moved on. I- we all thought you were gone.”

“I'm sorry, I'm still processing seven months?! It's only been two days!”

“No, Taako. It's been longer. The cycle's almost up.” There's some shuffling on the other end. “Where are you? I'll go tell Davenport right now and we'll come get you.”

“I'm where we fucking started, Lup!” He doesn't need to raise his voice at her, but he can't comprehend that she's had to go through all this time thinking he's dead, when he was just underground. Apparently in time fuckey caves.

He can hear Lup running on the other end of the comm. “Dav! Dav!” She's a little breathless, “Taako's alive.”

He sighs. “Lup-”

“Hey Cap'nport.”

There's a long silence.

“Taako?”

“Would you be a dear and come get your favourite arcanist-slash-chef? I'm way back at Go, and I certainly did not collect two hundred dollars.”

“Holy shit. Yeah! Shit. Fuck. We're on our way, just sit tight.”

It takes them about a day to get back to him. When the ship descends back into the clearing, Lup doesn't even bother to use the door. She hops over the railing around the main deck and floats down. She hits the ground running and tackles him in a tight hug. “Asshole,” she mutters, “making me think you're dead for months.”

“I was involuntarily teleported.”

Lup laughs and pulls back, taking in his face. “You're filthy,” she licks her thumb and starts rubbing at his cheek.

“Gah!” He tries to bend back away from her. “Cut it out!”

She takes his hand and brings him onto the ship where the rest of the crew express similar sentiments about being happy he isn't dead. Especially Magnus, who, when he turned around and couldn't find a trace of him, assumed he had gotten eaten by a beast or something.

“Nope,” Taako says, “just got consumed by the Earth.”

“Also,” Magnus looks deeply guilty, “we ate all your cookies.”

“The caramel ones?!” Magnus nods. “Fuck!”

This is incredibly self-indulgent but.

Modern Stranger Things AU. Steve and Robin get really into the adventure zone. And decide to go to a con or a liveshow or a costume party as really really elaborate Taaco twins. Because. Of course.

And Eddie isnt really into Taz because he takes DND too seriously but is tangentially aware and is like. Wait. CAN I BE THE GRIM REAPER? and it's a fun little time. But. Because of the scene in my head this is Ronance. Because hear me out. If Steve's boyfriend is part of their twins cosplay, Robins girlfriend has to be too.

Nancy doesn't listen to Taz cause it's not her sense of humor, but she's heard Robin ramble about it and she's like. Babe. Can we not be one of the several wlw ships you've talked about for hours? And Robins like. No! It's a twins cosplay. And Nancy doesn't really mind cosplaying a guy it's just. His name is Barry Bluejeans and he canonically wears So Much Denim and even if Nancy isn't super concerned with fashion it feels. Too much. To wear denim on denim on denim. But Robin's so so excited. So she's like. *big sigh* okay.

So Eddie, Steve and Robin have these beautiful elaborate fantasy outfits and Nancy is there, reluctantly, in a Canadian tuxedo.
