The attitude Dan Shive takes towards stuff like Telliot or the whole "the entire main cast is in a polyamorous relationship" thing is exactly like if he was a fanfic author describing his blorbos. Like not even as if they were his own OCs (and I mean they are, in actuality he's the creator of the whole thing).
Which, I mean, fair. If you aren't a fan of your own stuff, why make it?

Hope deserves all of the hugs. Ideally from tedd, specifically.
Also just, like, to talk to someone, I think

I wonder if the reason Edward suddenly chilled with Tedd's gender fluidity is because he accidentally copied Tedd's magic mark spell

I love El Goonish Shive because you can have a talking stage-magician's wand which was created to teach people magic, and which doesn't understand that people don't have "purposes" the way it does, and then it learns that a character who is Very Autistc has been pulling all-nighters researching stuff, and drops everything to teach them the Japanese word "karōshi", meaning "death from overwork", as a way of convincing them to Stop Doing That. and then you scroll down look down at the author commentary, and the author is like "Yeah, I learned that word from the anime I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years, the first episode got me to stop staying up past sunrise to work on the comic and then getting out of bed 3-4 hours later to immediately continue working on the comic."
like I need you to know that this is not a hypothetical example or an exaggeration. I am describing something which literally happened, today.

LGBTQ+ Disabled Characters Showdown Round 1, Wave 5, Poll 12
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A character being totally canon LGBTQ+ and disabled was not required to be in this competition. Please check qualifications and propaganda before asking why a character is included.
Check out the other polls in this wave and prior here.
Alex Claremont-Diaz-Red, White & Royal Blue
Qualifications:
He's canonically bi and I'm 90% sure the author confirmed on twitter that he has undiagnosed ADHD, and I'm pretty sure most of the fandom also accepts that as canon? Anyway, I'm not sure if they deleted their twitter, but I found this on the wayback machine https://web.archive.org/web/20210421023922/https://twitter.com/casey_mcquiston/status/1177391795539365888
Propaganda:
he deserves to win for "cornbread knows my sins" if nothing else
Tedd Verres-El Goonish Shive
Qualifications:
Tedd is Genderfluid and all but confirmed to be neurodivergent*. *Tedd's neurodivergence technically hasn't been confirmed in canon, but it is a case of the author basically stating: "Hey, the traits & behaviors that many fans are pointing out as seeming to indicate that Tedd is neurodivergent are all based on things I do/the way I act. I do not have an official diagnosis, so I cannot say for sure. But it would, uh, explain a lot." (source: https://www.egscomics.com/comic/qa8-08). Since stating this, the author has taken the RAADS–R autism self-diagnostic test and got a 192 "when 160 would be 'strong evidence of autism'." (Source: https://twitter.com/dantheshive/status/1612589122798895105) And later went on to say "I'm not sure I can give my characters any traits inherited from me without it being fairly added to the ADHD / Autism spectrum evidence board. This is regardless of whether I expect that to be the case." (Source:https://www.tumblr.com/danshive/715537083492696064) UPDATE as I am writing this submission: the author literally just wrote in the commentary below today's page: "This is how I'd write Tedd even if I hadn't learned stuff about ADHD that made me think Tedd (and possibly myself) have it, but since I HAVE learned that stuff about ADHD, I'm PRETTY SURE Tedd has ADHD?" (Source:https://www.egscomics.com/comic/layers-030)
Propaganda:
Tedd Verres is a Naturally-Purple-Haired, Genderfluid, Half-Japanese, neurodivergent 18-year-old genius magical scientist. When Tedd was around 12 or 13 years old, he began to reverse-engineer, upgrade, and
program a piece of Alien Magi-tech that can transform people called the TF Gun, in order to help an alien couple with minor shapeshifting abilities that Tedd's dad knew to better blendin with humans (abridged recap of these events can be found here:
[https://www.egscomics.com/comic/layers-016] and here: [https://www.egscomics.com/comic/layers-017]). Tedd began using the TF Gun for personal use (partially to transform herself in private as an early form gender exploration before she found out that being genderfluid is a thing people can be), which eventually lead to him studying the "science of magic" in general to better understand the enchantments the TF Gun would apply to humans, as well as help his friends understand and use the personal spells they had been developing. This later developed into a wider dream of researching how to grant everyone access to magic. The scientific study became a hyperfixation for Tedd (though at the time neither Tedd nor the author new the term "hyperfixation"), and started to cause him to neglect his interpersonal relationships to spend more time researching (Source: https://www.egscomics.com/comic/2011-08-01). Eventually, Tedd's girlfriend Grace convinced him to go on a double date with Tedd's cousin Nanase and her girlfriend Ellen (who is, to put it in a slightly over-simplified way, is a TF Gun enchantment of "turn you into a hot girl" that was previously applied to Tedd's friend Elliot, but was extracted from Elliot by a magical artifact and turned to an entirely new person, who is a girl with a new and unique soul, but all of Elliot's memories).During the course of this double date, Tedd realizes how much of his friends' lives he's been missing out on, Ellen points out to Tedd that she knows from Elliot's memories that "you geek out over something and devote all your free time to it until you eventually get sick of it". (Source: https://www.egscomics.com/comic/2011-09-08). Realizing that he can't afford to get burned out and losing the hyperfixation due to how important it is, and resolves to better manage it thorough broadening his areas of scientific investigation and applying in a way that would give focus to spending time with friends and trying new things (Source: https://www.egscomics.com/comic/2011-09-09).
Anything Else?:
Tedd's preferred pronouns are based on current form's presentation (i.e. prefers He/Him when presenting male and She/Her when presenting female), but prefers He/Him when being talked about divorced from a particular moment in time and/or when his current form is unknown, partially due to being bullied during his childhood for being amab but very feminine-looking. Tedd also wouldn't necessarily object to being referred to with They/Them. Source: https://www.egscomics.com/comic/qa8-03).
The Webcomic's Author Dan Shive is Genderfluid and Gender Casual, but primarily goes by He/Him "because it raises fewer questions from people [he] has no interest in talking to," but beyond that is "indifferent [to pronouns] so long as someone wasn't deliberately trying to be insulting".

Which pair of your favorite characters (from different stories) would get along the least well?
I don’t really have individual favorite characters, it’s either half the cast or no one. But if its just 2 characters I like that would get along poorly, I think tedd from egs and emperor belos from the owl house are definitely up there in the least well rankings
