The attitude Dan Shive takes towards stuff like Telliot or the whole "the entire main cast is in a polyamorous relationship" thing is exactly like if he was a fanfic author describing his blorbos. Like not even as if they were his own OCs (and I mean they are, in actuality he's the creator of the whole thing).
Which, I mean, fair. If you aren't a fan of your own stuff, why make it?

I was really surprised to go on AO3 and see that there is not a single fanfic about Hope from El Goonish Shive. I know we're a small fandom, and we've only had her since November, but it's surprising because she is literally the reincarnation of arguably the single most important and impactful side character

Re-reading EGS for the first time in a few years and I'm almost caught up to the present pages. But more importantly, I can't stop reading Kevin (the wand)'s dialogue like an old-timey radio announcer. Kinda like the radio demon from Hazbin Hotel.
(See Balance Page 113 for the added context of how Kevin tends to talk.)

What Is Webcomics?
The obvious answer is “comics on the internet”, but...
Sooooo... like this?
Tumblr media
...No, not like that.
When some comics are distributed via the internet, we call them “digital” comics, but others are “webcomics”. Even if we aren’t sure how to explain the distinction, we can tell the difference!
And this is despite the fact that some of the creators of successful long-running webcomics, like Ryan North and Chris Hastings, have moved very successfully into the world of comic books, and at least one creator of a popular long-running webcomic (Phil Foglio) came from that world, without this ever really blurring that line. So we can conclude that the difference isn’t just in who makes them
Webcomics Is Free
An obvious difference is in the business model. There are comics that fall on the “digital” side of that imaginary line that use a “pay what you choose” type of model, but generally there is some expectation that each member of the audience pay for the content directly
Contrariwise, the usual business model of webcomics is for the content itself to be available free, while the artist is supported by ad revenue, or by selling merch, or by the generosity of fans.
Tumblr media
In many ways, it’s similar to the distinction between movies and television
Webcomics Is Crude
Another common distinction between webcomics and comics that happen to be on the web is an obsession going back to the early roots of the form with using shortcuts to allow a visual story to be told without, in many cases, much in the way of drawing ability. This ranges from pixel sprites, to clip art, to stick figures.
Previously mentioned webcomic superstar, Ryan North, took this tendency to the formalist limit by creating a single page of simplistic pixel art for his Dinosaur Comics and then, for going-on 20 years and 4000 pages, only changing the words every day. Below is my favorite page of Dinosaur Comics, but they’re all the same. Except for having different words.
Tumblr media
(When I was thinking about this tendency of webcomics, it reminded me of a comic I loved back in the early 2000s, that I was going to describe as a “webcomic except in print”. But upon further investigation, I discovered that Get Your War On had been a webcomic all along, just one that happened to also be printed in a few US cities’ leftist newspapers. Below is an early one, probably the first that I saw, and a perfect representation of why it was such a vital outlet for those few of us not caught up in the war fever in those dark Bush years...)
Tumblr media
Even those webcartoonists not trying to avoid drawing don’t necessarily have the patience to actually learn to draw before beginning to publish. Webcomics are well known for sometimes stark evolution in their art, and possibly none moreso than my personal favorite webcomic, El Goonish Shive:
Tumblr media
There are definitely major exceptions to this tendency. Many webcomics are gorgeously, lushly illustrated (even from the beginning.) Below is half of a particularly lovely page of a webcomic ode to transhumanism titled Dresden Codak:
Tumblr media
The thing that ties these disparate works together, from those with art that’s crudely sketched, to cleverly sidestepped, to beautifully fully realized, is each has a singular creative vision. In stark contrast with their big bro the comic books, webcomics are distinguished by relatively little collaboration and practically zero editorial meddling. These are the works of passionate amateurs who (sometimes) gradually found ways to make a livelihood from their passion
Webcomics Is Bite-Sized
But beyond the business side of it, and even the low entry barriers and amateurist zeal, the thing that really sets webcomics apart from the comic books to the point of seeming almost a different medium and linking them more closely to even-older sibling the newspaper comics, is the different pacing and structure caused by being released in tiny, tiny chunks
But that’s enough for now, we can talk about the impact on the form of coming out in bite-size installments.... next time!

Pride 2022 - Day 30
Behold! Sweet glorious webcomic of queerness!
This comic started TWENTY YEARS AGO so, like most webcomics, it starts a little rough - less matured art, less matured content. But my peeps. Please hang in there and read it. Because before you know it this comic blossoms into the most beautiful, wholesome, inclusive, kickass comic you ever did see.

As with everything, the specifics would matter in real life. This is an “in general” poll, meaning scenarios with potential additional complicating factors should be ignored.

reading through El Goonish Shive for the first time, im obsessed with the fact that the author apparently had no knowledge of 2000s Gender Politics while writing, and was just writing what they thought was cool at the time. The comic many people have told me was their trans awakening just happened to stumble into the role of one of the most progressive of the time (ESPECIALLY during the homophobic as fuck 2000s) out of sheer coincidence.

I love El Goonish Shive because you can have a talking stage-magician's wand which was created to teach people magic, and which doesn't understand that people don't have "purposes" the way it does, and then it learns that a character who is Very Autistc has been pulling all-nighters researching stuff, and drops everything to teach them the Japanese word "karōshi", meaning "death from overwork", as a way of convincing them to Stop Doing That. and then you scroll down look down at the author commentary, and the author is like "Yeah, I learned that word from the anime I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years, the first episode got me to stop staying up past sunrise to work on the comic and then getting out of bed 3-4 hours later to immediately continue working on the comic."
like I need you to know that this is not a hypothetical example or an exaggeration. I am describing something which literally happened, today.

Murderbot: System Collapse (and Susan Pompoms)
This is not exactly spoiler territory but I'm still putting it below a cut. (It might qualify as spoilers for El Goonish Shive, but I kinda feel the same about that in this case too.)
Bharadwaj says even good change is stressful.
A relatively recent page of El Goonish Shive has a character facing this head-on. Unfortunately for Susan, she wants to be rational about things, even though she knows she sometimes isn't, and seems to consider it a bit of a weakness. She's harder on herself than she is on others. Big Mood. We have to deal with our own bullshit 24/7; at least when we sleep or are alone we aren't around someone else's that often, and even then it's a different angle on the subject and, in my experiences, compassion is easier.
Tumblr media
[ID: El Goonish Shive page. Susan and Sarah are standing talking on the roof of the high school. Susan is facing away, distraught and trying to hide her expression as she has lost her composure. Sarah suggests, pursuant to a page omitted, "It, um. Maybe you're upset by change?" Susan, still facing away, incredulously asks, "By good change? Not the store closing, but... quitting a job I don't want? Being done with this school? Not having to deal with that terrible locker anymore?" Sarah, concerned but calm, continues her supposition: "Well, I mean... You've worked there for years, and you've been here for years. It's what's normal for you, and... there is stuff you like about both places, right? Like, you started your movie review show with Elliot because of your job, and... you have friends here. You met Catalina here. Got to know Elliot and Tedd here." Susan half-smiles, her expression still bearing the strain of the strong emotions she's navigating, and asks, "And what's there to like about a locker with a sticky door?" Sarah smiles and replies, "You share it with me?" Susan, the sardonic half-smile gone, turns to face her more fully, and with a haunting expression as she comes to terms with it, pauses and says, "I want to hang out more." /end ID] So, y'know, right now I'm a mess. One little line messes me up so much. okay from here on I'm just fangirling to clarify shit. If you don't wanna hear me ramble about these fandoms in the abstract, adios. If you're a Murderbot fan wondering what this is about, El Goonish Shive is a webcomic that's been going since 2002, is unapologetically queer, has both accidentally and deliberately given earnest and deeply compassionate portrayals of queerness and neurodivergence, and also is just interesting, clever, and has a really big cry button moment as early as 2003. Susan in particular doesn't use the label asexual; Dan Shive considers her sexuality representative of his own, and is personally uncomfortable committing to restrictive labels such as that, though he knows how important they can be as well. She is beloved by asexual fans, okay frankly she's beloved by all fans because she's a complex, fascinating character whose political and philosophical views are her own, and excuse me I'm a mess again. She's not even my favorite fucking character. If you're an El Goonish Shive fan, I am crying over a construct made of cloned human tissues and robotic parts who is bitter, sardonic, and spent the first few books in a deep depression it was not aware of, has developed into a badass punk, and has an unsophisticated but very personal perspective on oppression, slavery, and artificial consciousness under a corporate dystopian rule. It calls itself "Murderbot" because of an incident it cannot remember that led to it hacking its governor module so that it might never be forced to kill again. It will kill, it's occasionally even Plan A, but it's a choice, not an order. ("As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure." - Book 1: All Systems Red.) It is asexual ("Things. :p"), prolly aromantic, prolly agender, and wonderful.
Then she added, “You know, you can stay here in the crew area if you want. Would you like that?” They all looked at me, most of them smiling. One disadvantage in wearing the armor is that I get used to opaquing the faceplate. I’m out of practice at controlling my expression. Right now I’m pretty sure it was somewhere in the region of stunned horror, or maybe appalled horror.
My favorite installment takes place after the fourth novella, but the first novella is absolutely sufficient as a standalone work of fiction, with a satisfying beginning, middle and end, comes in a glorious audiobook format narrated by Kevin R. Free, and makes me cry a lot. The early "humor me" level cry button for me is when everyone confronts it, and it turns to face a corner to avoid their deeply stressful eye contact. I have heard that fan responses to All Systems Red led the author Martha Wells to seek out an autism diagnosis; compare Dan Shive's "It would explain a lot."

A Reaction Side Blog
Dan Shive here. I've created this blog because I hyperfixate on things I've watched / read / whatever, and that can be a huge distraction 🙃
I want a place where I can regularly share my lengthy, possibly rambling thoughts, hopefully releasing some of the tension on that hyperfixation.
I'd also like all of these reactions to be in one place, because Tumblr search can be a nightmare.
Also, since these are about stories, they will frequently be a "this is what I'm talking about" followed by a "Keep Reading" button to click to see more.
I don't want my main blog (danshive) to have a bunch of posts that look like that all the time, hence the side blog. Plus, anyone following this knows what they're in for.
