The endless and cyclical power imbalances found within Ailani and Wolffe’s relationship is an aspect I really enjoy exploring in my work, but it’s not something I’ve discussed in posts too much.
Though Wolffe technically outranks her, Ailani is still a Jedi. Her and her organization own and command the clone army. He can order her around on the battlefield, but even then, in the eyes of the GAR, Ailani’s life (as a Jedi) is seen as more valuable than his. Wolffe can be above her in paper, but the reality is more complex.
Ailani debates the nature of the clone army often, and she thinks about the moral implications and disagrees with the Jedi’s involvement, but she (very ignorantly) doesn’t fully understand the scope or implications of this complexity, especially when it comes to her relationship with Wolffe.
She’s so desperate to have a friend, and she’s so self critical, that she doesn’t understand the power and privilege she possesses. Wolffe however, is keenly aware of the imbalances and social implications of their relationship. In The Acolyte, he makes serval comments about this imbalance that Ailani doesn’t understand, but the reader can see the full scope of.
This is ultimately why her and Wolffe don’t work during the Clone Wars.
Ailani is so consumed by self loathing, she is unable to properly address the complexity of their relationship, and she’s unable to see past herself. They can’t work through things, because Ailani doesn’t understand the scope of the issue. Wolffe even confronts her about this in the final chapter of The Acolyte, and he will again in The Wanderer.
This power dynamic shifts during their time with the Rebellion, which ultimately leads them to a romantic relationship. However, it does not balance out.
Ailani is no longer a Jedi, and Wolffe is no longer a solider. But these roles haunt and define both of them. The inability to talk these things out, or address the complexity of their past, is part of the reason their relationship ultimately fails and results in Ailani’s death. She’s attempting to atone for her sins by devoting her entire life to Wolffe and loving him so much it hurts. But Wolffe still doesn’t trust her, though he does love her completely.
But we can talk more about that later…

*time jump*
While taking a break from traveling, Natalia ran into Oakland at a nearby bar and after some liquid courage she went over to speak to him. They talked all night about their past relationship and what they both had been doing the last few years. Natalia couldn't help but smile being near him, and he was feeling the same way. They both agreed they don't want to rush the relationship this time around but they both decided that it would be nice if Oakland found a roommate in Evergreen Harbor and moved there so they would be close to each other.
