Ooh! Re: book recs for the new year, do you have any lesser known fantasy (or sci fi tbh) recommendations? Or better known but pre-2010s books - I've kind of devoured a lot of the modern stuff, and we have a shockingly similar taste in books

Ooh, excellent! I never actually know what's lesser known? So I'm going with things I haven't seen a lot of internet buzz about, with a decent amount of indie and self-pub. A lot of it will be fantasy romance, but I'll try for a variety!

The Devotion of Delflenor by R. Cooper (I'm going to keep trying until someone reads this piney piney lady knights book, damn it)

The Tea Princess Chronicles by Casey Blair

Salt Magic, Skin Magic by Lee Welch (a lot of people were talking about Seducing the Sorcerer by the same author a year or so ago, but I like this one better!)

Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and then if you like the concept behind that, try the Steerswoman books by Rosemary Kirstein

Ariah by B.R. Sanders is very worldbuildy and cool

Sharon Shinn flies under the radar sometimes but tends to have cool worldbuilding concepts, I'm midway through the Elemental Blessings series and really enjoying it

Felicia Davin's Gardener's Hand trilogy is great, and Davin now has a historical fantasy romance(/verging on erotica in places) epistolary series coming out, of which I've read the first, The Scandalous Letters of V and J is very fun.

I've only read the first of Effie Calvin's Ieflaria series of largely sapphic fantasy romance, but I had fun with that one!

I like Amy Rae Durreson, who usually writes m/m fantasy romance, try Reawakening on for size but be warned the second book has a plague in it

If you like middle grade, I really like Merrie Haskell's fairy tale retellings and her short stories for older readers too, she's very Robin McKinley-esque

(Speaking of, if you haven't read Robin McKinley, please do, any of her you can get your hands on but particularly her fairy tales and Chalice)

Three Princes by Ramona Wheeler is one I don't remember a lot about but the concept is great, it's the kind of alternate history I wish more people were writing instead of 18,000 "The Nazis/Confederates Won" books (and similarly, P. Djeli Clark's Dead Djinn books, though those have a much bigger dose of fantasy)

CJ Cherryh can sometimes be a bit dense for my mood, but I've read the first three books in her series that starts with Foreigner and there is SO much fun politics and worldbuilding. (I haven't read fantasy from her, just sci fi, sorry, almost posted this without making that clear, this is very much sci fi!)

Okay, that's what I've got for this exact second! I'm on a different floor from the bookshelf that has the most of my older fantasy on it, so there's not quite as much of that as intended, but it's what I've got in me!

Regarding what flavour of smut I write, its always queer, soft, and a little gothic in the undertones... Would love to do some more genderqueer stuff in the future as well

Harry potter haha, wrote some truly terrible angsty self-insert when i was 14 (luckily that is gone forever!!)

Honestly, I really love When I am done, its such a snap-shot kind of fic, and its got such a mood that I love. Keeping a one-shot simple and to the point is really difficult, and I think this one is my best attempt at it.

Favorite Books of 2022📚

I had so much fun doing this for 2021–so I’m back at it with a list of my favorite books of 2022!

I’m not going to lie to you, I didn’t have a great reading year. I read significantly less than last year and a lot more mindless books since this year I was overwhelmed with graduating law school, taking (and passing!!!) the bar exam, and starting a full time job at a busy (but amazing) law firm. BUT I did find some diamonds in the rough:

Without further ado, the 5 books I read this year that I would ABSOLUTELY recommend under the cut:

5. The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson

a bunch of sociopaths cross paths and the result is lots of murder

the characters were all amoral and all SO INTERESTING

i weirdly have a crush on the MC. i want whatever she wants, even if that’s blood on her hands. like i don’t care how many people she’s killed she’s hot 

lots of twists and turns you don’t see coming. the one halfway through the book absolutely FLOORED me 

lots of really good Plotting from literally every character

the improbability of some of the coincidences is made real by the authenticity of the characters. like (hopefully) no one actually relates to them but you get them and why they’re so amoral 

the last line took my breath away

read when you wanna believe you could get away with murder 

4. The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen

fantasy You’ve Got Mail with a sunshine undertaker and a grumpy demi-god 

enemies to lovers!!! you know that I’m always here for that 

Hart is so fucking morose that I physically cannot. King of angst. He’s so lonely and prickly but also a sweetheart 

Mercy has got true eldest daughter syndrome and I, for one, get it 

the relationship progression was perfection!!! the book keeps the tension really really well 

the cafe scene was so heart-breaking. you will get that lurching feeling in your gut when you read it

I actually loved all the side plots. there’s a LOT going on in this book but it all weaves together really well 

there’s this interesting juxtaposition between a kinda terrifying world and the mundane reality of small-town life. it’s weirdly heavy and light-hearted at the same time??? 

this book is doing a lot but i loved everything it did 

read when you want your small town romance to have a bit of blood & magic in it

3. Delilah Green Doesn’t Care by Ashley Herring Blake

two women pretend casual will work for them. however, they are absolutely useless sapphics. so you know where this is going

Delilah is honestly a whole fucking mood. queen of peaking AFTER high school 

Claire is a sweet angel. I would have fallen in love with her too tbh

honestly i would kill for Delilah’s experience of having her step-sister (who she hates)’s best friend unknowingly hitting on her in the bar and not recognizing her. it’s icon moves 

but seriously Claire and Delilah are adorable. and hot 

my parents were having a party while i was upstairs in my bedroom listening to this audiobook. I was washing my face in the bathroom hallway listening to a SEX SCENE, and a 50 year old woman came up to use my bathroom. i cannot describe in words what we felt in that moment.

despite that mortifying context, the sex scenes were passionate and hot and well-written

there’s really good girl group representation here that i’m super into. the friendship is just as strong as the romance here, which I LOVE

i haven’t gotten to book 2 yet but this is gunna be a sapphic trilogy!! gods bless

2. Book Lovers by Emily Henry 

two colleagues who previously disliked one another keep running into each other in the small town they’re in for the summer and find out they’re actually the same person  

the prologue is so hilarious and genius and well-written that i knew instantly this book would be a favorite of the year

Nora is the Hallmark Christmas Movie Villain Girlfriend. The foil to the doe-eyed, small town girl that always gets the guy. She’s the one who keeps getting DUMPED by that guy. And honestly? I’ve ALWAYS related more to that girl. Seeing her get her happy ending is what I needed for my own career driven, type A soul

Charlie is a brooding book lover. Need I say more? (I was in love within 50 pages)

childfree rep!!! not at all common in romance books, and i love to see it 

miscommunication actually well-done. it all feels reasonable given the circumstances  and doesn’t make you want to punch them. rare 

i really, really enjoy Emily Henry’s adult romances. they’ve just got a depth to them that romances can easily lack. and her Emily  metaphors REALLY get me. she’s an instant-tbr author for me now 

read when you want to feel the mortifying ordeal of being known 

1. Never Ever Getting Back Together by Sophie Gonzales

A bisexual disaster goes on a reality television show to re-date her ex in order to destroy him, but ends up falling in love with her ex-boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend

John Tucker Must Die but make it sapphic 

A little bit of Charm Offensive vibes (which was a 2021 top favorite!) 

Maya’s revenge plot is so fucking poorly planned but hilarious

Skye’s mommy issues and refusal to open herself hit a little too close to home but in the best way 

Jordy is such a perfect awful ex. It was so much fun to pray on his downfall 

Isaac is my hero. I will not elaborate if you know you know 

After Perfect on Paper, I knew Sophie could write GOOD bisexual rep. This book confirms that she knows what she’s about — she gave me not ONE but TWO amazing bisexuals. 

Reading this will make you laugh and blush and blast Taylor Swift songs on repeat 

Read when you wanna light your ex’s house on fire and then make out at red lights with a hot girl in the getaway car

And that's the best five out of the 110 books I read. See you in 2023 (hopefully with a top ten!) Cheers to another year of reading too much!

Heya, kiddo!

Oh, that's a really good question!

Well, firstly, it's the whole thing of "best friends to lovers" (as a ace person, this single trope makes up 95% of all my favourite pairings). Tegan and Nyssa are best friends from basically their first meeting, and it's clear that they hold each other in very high esteem. Nyssa is basically the only person that Tegan isn't constantly snapping at, and Tegan is one of the only people (possibly the only person) that Nyssa feels comfortable being vulnerable with.

Tegan and Nyssa met under incredibly shocking circumstances; both of them had lost family just before they met (Nyssa's father and entire planet had been destroyed by the Master, and Tegan's aunt had been killed by the Master) and both of them ended up stranded out of their own time and place. They are then left basically alone together to help the recently-regenerated (and mostly unconscious) Fifth Doctor after Adric (the Doctor's only companion left from his prior incarnation) is kidnapped by the Master. Tegan and Nyssa have to pilot the TARDIS safely to a destination, get the Doctor to a place where he can relax and heal from his regeneration and also deal with the Master's plot to capture and kill the Doctor. They do all this together as a team, despite having only met barely a few hours before.

Judging from this scene, they also shared a bed whilst staying overnight in the healing place. (Side note: I have not edited this picture, it really is staged like a Renaissance painting inspired by the works of Sappho. 🤣😂)

Where was I? Oh, yes; Tegan and Nyssa also have complimenting personalities. Tegan is brass, sharp-talking and very opinionated; she's got a lot of emotions that she shows easily. While Nyssa, on the other hand, comes from a planet of peace-loving scientists who keep their emotions largely subdued (I'd also mention that she's technically a princess too, except monarchy ick). Despite this, Tegan and Nyssa never end up arguing. Instead, they work off each other and value the others perspective on things. Tegan admires Nyssa's quiet fortitude while Nyssa admires Tegan's confidence in declaring her emotions. Nyssa's a scientist and works mostly on logic, whereas Tegan is a flight attendant and very practical. Opposites attract; need I say more?

Tegan and Nyssa end up sharing a room in the TARDIS, and literally every scene in which it's shown looks like it's from a roommates-to-lovers fic.

Again, I swear I have not edited this picture. This really is framed like they're a recently married couple co-habitating together. 🤣😂

Now, obviously, their time together was short-lived (they are Doctor Who companions, after all). They were together on the show for just under two seasons of television. Nyssa decided to stay on at a space station they visited to create a vaccine for a deadly disease. And the ending of the episode... *cries*

Again, it really is staged to look like a couple parting ways. Doesn't stop me crying, though. 😭😭

For the next story, Tegan spends most of it looking incredibly miserable and flat-out ignoring the romantic intentions of a weird immortal being they've stumbled across. Whilst Tegan is wearing something that vaguely looks like a wedding dress (which... oh, you poor pining sapphic, Tegan). She does cheer up slightly in the next season, but her mood is considerably dampened from that point onwards until she leaves the TARDIS.

However, RTD later confirmed in "Farewell, Sarah-Jane" that Nyssa and Tegan were a couple living together in Australia, as they both attended Sarah-Jane's funeral. So, presumably, Nyssa found a way to Earth in the present day, found Tegan and they settled down together. Which is a pretty sweet ending for them, not gonna lie.

Chibnall may have not mentioned this in the centenary special, but the Tegan/Nyssa community here on Tumblr mainly views that as Nyssa not wanting to get involved with UNIT after finally getting a peaceful life with Tegan on Earth. That would also explain why Tegan mentioned a step-son, as Nyssa had a daughter and son.

Some of the Big Finish Audios also have a habit of unintentionally writing them as with crushes on each other. Sometimes, you get the sense that the writers are fully aware of how couple-y Tegan and Nyssa seem together and decide to play into it. Cue Nyssa getting shocked and almost jealous when they bump into one of Tegan's ex-boyfriends (yeah, I was shocked too) and Tegan constantly talking about how lovely and wonderful Nyssa is with virtually no prompting from other characters. 😂🤣

I know that, at the time, it was written as them being close platonic friends, but -in all honesty- I had to check online as to whether they were a couple after I watched their first episode together, because (to a modern eye) they do not read as two heterosexual women at all. I personally see Tegan as a lesbian and Nyssa as a asexual bi-romantic with a strong preference for women.

Basically, these two are awesome characters in their own right, as well as being a really cute couple. Hope you enjoyed my gushing about these two! 😊😊

the dialogue. not only was the dialogue for each character distinct enough that i could tell who was speaking based on the dialogue alone, dialogue sounded like the characters. there were many times where i could almost imagine the dialogue happening “in game”, and several times where i thought “yeah they’d say that. yup.”

the sibling interactions between chai and peppermint were, to me, pretty feasible and in character.

i appreciate that the flashbacks were not only italicized but separated from the main content by an extra line.

peppermint trying very hard not to focus on her interactions with korsica (THEY BRUSHED HANDS) was relatable, tbh. also during the uno game i was vividly picturing a Live CNMN Reaction moment.

peppermint a) trying to make korsica win and b) making chai lose out of spite is DEFINITELY something i could imagine happening between the characters, nicely done.

you definitely got the idea across that peppermint is a sapphic disaster (mood), lol.
