Fic title game thing: after the storm

Kate(/Osgood) (Doctor Who: episode tag to Death in Heaven) mature, 300wrds (I know how to drabble sometimes) cw: heavy body ouching cos rmr that time Kate fell out of a plane and didn’t die, canon character death, heavy angst!!!

She remembers clawing at the strap, grip desperate—helpless—swinging six feet off the floor of the plane and gravity pulling hard. Remembers falling, her head in the clouds, her throat screaming against the cold; the wet ripping at her skin, shredding her alive as she plummets. Remembers rising, hard metal against her body, still in the sky and climbing higher. Remembers floating, sun on her skin, back to earth, barely breathing; her father holding her tight, curling into his chest like a too-tired child carried to bed.

He never held her like that when he was alive.

She wakes to the beep of monitors, the scent of disinfectant. Tries to move, to get her bearings, gasps as pain flares from her back, her legs, her chest, bound and strapped and plastered: pinpoints of agony—shoulders, thighs, ribs—radiating through the dull ache of her whole body.

She looks at the readings on the pump beside her and sniffs. She’ll have to ask for more pain relief.

‘Kate?’ She look towards the voice: Osgood a foot further down the bed, red nose and puffy eyes, blinking away the traces of sleep. She must have cried out louder than she thought. ‘You’re awake!’ Her relief is palpable and Kate reaches forward, to take her hand, as Osgood clambers out of her chair. She watches her scramble to rush out the door instead.

She catches something in the corner of her eyes: a pair of glasses, on her bedside table, frames thick and lenses shattered. Her body rushes white hot. She reaches over, grasps them in her hand, snapped hinges biting into her palm. She can’t feel her toes. Osgood comes back into the room, a gaggle of Doctors trailing behind.

Kate looks up, eyes burning; sees Peta’s face, and remembers.

Il y a du courage dans les termes abordés, de l’homosexualité, à l’alcoolisme, en tenant pour fil rouge la condition de la femme dans un milieu d’homme.

Un chef d’oeuvre, et une preuve nouvelle s’il en fallait une du talent troublant de miss Monroe.

Il pourrait être l'une des vedettes le mieux payées du monde, mais cela lui est indifférent et aux films coûteux, il préfère les bons films : souvent ce ne sont pas les mêmes. L'Amérique est aujourd'hui toute prête à faire de lui l'un de ses dieux et pourtant il la quitte à demi puisqu'il a décidé de vivre, chaque année, six mois en France. Guy Abitan, envoyé spécial de « S.L.C. » est allé à Nice lui poser vingt questions qui se résumeraient en une seule : « Qui êtes-vous, Tony Perkins ? »

Le premier soir que je l'ai vu, c'était à Juan-les-Pins, il y a un peu plus d'un mois, sur cette longue jetée, toujours grouillante d'une foule paisible, paresseuse et demi-nue, qui borde la plage. Là, face à un café tout brillant où un nombre de plus en plus grand de curieux avaient commencé de s'assembler, et même, bientôt de s'entasser, vous auriez pu voir une énorme caméra noire et grise, inquiétante vraiment avec ses objectifs compliqués, sa sorte de museau dressé, son air romane de vous donner des ordres : on allait tourner (c'était le début la nuit) une scène du nouveau film d'André Cayatte, « Le Glaive et la Balance ». Vedettes : Jean-Claude Brialy, Pascale Audret, Tony Perkins. Cette fois, il s'agissait d'une séquence où Tony devait paraître seul ; on l'attendait ; tout le monde savait bien qu'il était caché quelque part, tout près, peut-être même dans le petit square situé à dix mètres de là – mais tout le monde faisait semblant de croire qu'il se trouvait encore loin, très loin, et qu'il arrivait, qu’ « il allait arriver, comme je l'ai entendu dire à André Cayatte, le réalisateur « D'une Minute à l'Autre ». En somme, c'était un jeu – et chacun l'acceptait.

Brusquement, a côté de moi, une jeune fille crie : « Le voilà ! » Je regarde. Je ne vois rien. Ah ! Tout au bout de la rue, j'aperçois un long jeune homme très mince, vêtu d'un pantalon de toile blanc et d'un léger pull-over de couleur noire, et qui avance vers nous, vers cette jetée contre la plage où nous nous trouvons. La démarche rapide, mains enfouies, toutes droites, au plus creux des poches. C'est drôle : moi, Tony Perkins, bête comme je le suis, je croyais presque qu'il ne parviendrait pas vivant jusqu'ici ; j'imaginais milles horreurs, qu'on me l'aurait dévoré en cours de chemin par exemple, ou qu'il serait entouré d'une cohorte de jeunes gens passionnés et ravis… Et je vous en assure, des histoires de vedettes coupées en morceaux par leurs admirateurs, ça n'est pas du tout, mais alors pas du tout ma nature, ni mon habitude d'y accorder nulle importance. Enfin, quand même, Tony traversant seul, sans être dérangé, avec l'allure d'un petit garçon qui se promène, les rues d'un village aussi « bousculé » que Juan-les-Pins, je dois vous le confier, cela m'a fort surpris. Et puis aussi, j'en ai eu le plaisir : ces gens qui attendaient, massés, bruyants, mais sans impatience, le début de la séquence, étaient des gens polis : ils n'avaient rien à voir avec ces imbéciles qui prononcent le moms de leurs « idoles » en se pinçant les lèvres, et se battraient pour la petite joie d'être passé à vingt centimètres d'elles. Première leçon bien agréable : Tony Perkins n'est pas une idole ; c'est un comédien – et un grand comédien – qui se soir se rendait à son travail ; et les curieux ne m'ont semblé curieux que de le voir à cette besogne. Excusez-moi : je trouvais ça beaucoup plus sympathique. On tourne. Deux, trois fois le même passage, Tony doit marcher pendant quelques minutes le long du trottoir, devant la caméra, avant de se faire happer par une voiture où hurlent une demi-douzaine de jeunes filles et de garçons un peu ivres, et trop gais. Quelque chose ne va pas. Sans cesse, quelque chose ne va pas. Il faut recommencer – on est en retard sur le temps prévu – chacun bientôt s'énerve… seuls. Tony et André Cayatte restent calmes. « C'est un réalisateur merveilleux », dit Tony de Cayatte – « C'est un ange », dit Cayatte de Tony. Tout paraît simple alors ; les nerfs des autres, bientôt, ne comptent plus.

La travail achevé, Tessa Sigrist, la grande amie française de Tony Perkins, nous présente l'un à l'autre. Affable, souriant, Tony s'inquiète : « What do you want? » À cette seule occasion il m'aura parlé anglais ; ayant vécu en France six mois à peine, il possède déjà la maîtrise de notre langue avec une vivacité et une assurance vraiment déconcertantes. Je nomme « Salut les Copains » ; il demande : « C'est en rapport avec l'émission ? », puis il me donne un rendez-vous pour le lendemain, dans l'après-midi, aux studios de la Victorine, qui sont situés juste en arrière de Nice, au dessus du bleu très riche, très profond de la mer, contre une colline tout en herbes, en palmiers, … soleil. – Nous nous sommes vus une heure. J'ai indiqué la gentillesse, le côté rieur, léger de Tony. Pour que l'image soit plus juste, sans doute dois-je vous parler aussi de ce mince regard brun, aigu, extraordinairement mobile, dans un visage clair et fin d'adolescent – de cette voix aimable et souvent douce, mais parfois encore nerveuse, coupante, agacée – de ses mains enfin, belles et souples, qui soudain se lèvent et s'agitent, et sans que Tony ait eu même à parler, leur éloquence a déjà suffit à vous expliquer… Il n'arrêtait pas de me répéter que tout allait bien, et je n'arrêtais pas de le trouver tendu. Et nous avons parlé de lui, voici comment.

Un métier ? Non : une vie

— Alors Tony, ce nouveau film…

— C'est l'histoire d'un enlèvement ; un gosse a disparu : des témoins racontent que, la dernière fois, ils l'ont vu en compagnie de deux hommes… J'aime les histoires où tout n'est pas net, où il y a toujours une possibilité de se tromper. Ici, ok s'attendait à rejoindre deux coupables seulement : on en trouve trois, et chacun d'eux va s'efforcer d'accuser les deux autres ; mais rien ne sera jamais éclairci… Cela me vient sûrement de mon enfance, cette habitude de mieux comprendre ce qui est mystérieux. Quand j'avais treize, quatorze ans (j'étais alors écolier à New York), ma mère m'envoyait chaque semaine, pendant les grandes vacances, a un théâtre pour enfant qui s'appelait le « Little Summer Theater ». C'était, à vrai dire, un drôle de théâtre : si on voulait obtenir un rôle dans l'une des pièces, toujours les mêmes à être reprises, il fallait d'abord pendant un certain temps travailler dans la coulisse – vous clouiez les poutres, vous aidez à tirer le rideau, vous changiez les meubles des décors… Bien évidemment, dans ses conditions, vous n'entendiez jamais une pièce toute entière. Alors j'étais obligé d'inventer, de refaire sans cesse une histoire : mais il restait toujours un trou, une faille, ça ne marchait pas jusqu'au bout. Et c'est ce qui me séduisait.

— Vous avez vingt-neuf ans, vous êtes né d'une grande famille new-yorkaise, et vous avez passé, je crois, une licence d'histoire et une licence de lettres. Qu'est-ce qui vous a conduit au métier de comédien ? Un hasard ? Ou y songiez-vous depuis longtemps ?

— Depuis longtemps ? Mais je n'ai jamais songé (et je ne songe encore jamais) qu'à cela. Pour moi, la comédie n'est pas un métier, elle se confond avec ma vie même…

— Oui mais…

— Et vous avez oublié une chose essentielle : que mon père, Osgood Perkins, fut considéré pendant une vingtaine d'années, au début du siècle, comme le plus surprenant comédien de théâtre que Broadway eût connu.

— Vous estimez donc lui devoir votre goût pour ce « métier » – si vous me passez encore ce mot ?

— Non, il vaut mieux que je ne mente pas, peut-être ; mon père est mort comme je venais d'avoir cinq ans. Probablement lui dois-je un certain penchant pour la carrière de comédien ; mais non mes goûts profonds, non ma nature… A force de clouer, de tirer, de changer, et comme je devais être terriblement ennuyeux avec mes plaintes continuelles, j'ai enfin eu droit à un rôle minuscule, et puis à un autre moins minuscule, et à un autre encore… Ma mère gardait de nombreux amis, parmi les gens de théâtre ; une fois, l'un d'eux, qui s'était occupé à me faire un peu travailler durant mes quatre ou cinq années d'adolescence, me suggéra d'essayer – je dis bien : d'essayer – de jouer le rôle du jeune homme dans Thé et Sympathie. J'ai donc « essayé » : il paraît que cela fut à peu près … mais moi, je ne l'affirmerai pas. J'avais alors dix-neuf ans, et le plaisir d'être aidé par une partenaire excellente et attentive : Joan Fontaine.

— Et le cinéma ? Vous n'y êtes venu que plus tard ?

— Oui (j'étais âgé de vingt-et-un ans), pour paraître dans un film qui s'intitulait l'Actrice et qui aurait pu être très bon si… on avait pas eu le tort de m'y proposer un rôle. J'y ai été absolument affreux, détestable ! Alors je me suis mis à mépriser le cinéma, et j'ai quitté Hollywood en hâte pour revenir vers Broadway. En somme, sans Hitchcock, je n'aurais jamais fait de cinéma…

— Ç'aurait été un bonheur, ou un ennui ?

— Je le dis sans rire, je deviendrais parfaitement fou si de ce métier, je me voyais privé.

— Et la musique ?

— Comment ?

— Je dis : et la musique ? L'aimez-vous ?

— Si je répondais non ?

— Je penserais que vous vous moquez.

— Très bien ; alors je l'aime ; et d'abord celle des autres siècles : Mozart, Vivaldi, Beethoven, et surtout Bach, toutes les cantates de Bach ; certains jours, je voudrais en entendre à longueur d'instants. Mais le jazz aussi me passionne. Connaissez-vous Miles Davis ?

— On m'a dit, et d'ailleurs, j'ai pu le constater, que vous dansiez le « twist » de manière admirable. L'autre soir, chez « Tétou », – nous ne nous connaissions pas encore – je vous ai vu danser, deux heures, avec une fougue extrême ; peut-on aimer Bach et le « twist » ?

— Ne mêlez pas tout ainsi. Le « twist » cela me semble être fait pour la seule danse, et voilà qui n'est pas si mal : essayez donc de « twister » sur une cantate de Bach ! Mais essayez aussi de vous sentir déchiré, défait par une chansonnette…

— Pensez-vous à Ray Charles ?

— Pour Ray Charles, il s'agit d'un autre problème. Je tiens « Lonely Avenue » pour un chef-d'œuvre.

As an aside, I was looking at Steel’s Frozen Pool page and then I went to search on Google for his DobberProspects’ page when I remembered – Frozen Pool now automatically links the two. So I went to Info/Analysis on Steel and sure enough, there was the link. Research made easier. Steel has 34 points in 41 AHL games while Terry has 41 in 41. The Ducks are in transition now, whether they admit it or not.

Invasion of the Finns: never before has the NHL seen four Finns tally 30 goals in the same season. The last time three did it was 2005-06 with Teemu Selanne, Olli Jokinen and Jere Lehtinen. Right now Sebastian Aho and Mikko Rantanen are there, with Patrik Laine and Aleksander Barkov knocking on the door with 29. The next international tournament (be it the World Cup or the Olympics) will be interesting, with this country really making strikes over the last decade.

Quinn Hughes has signed with Vancouver! If what I understand is correct, he can’t play 10 games or he will become eligible for Seattle expansion. However, I would put money on him playing nine games and burning the first year of his three-year entry deal. I wouldn’t be surprised if he made an impact quickly. The Canucks are desperate for a puck-moving defenseman. I posted my Top 200 Fantasy Prospect Forwards rankings Sunday and will have the Top 50 Fantasy Prospect Defensemen up for Tuesday. Hughes is No.2 on that list (there’s a sneak peek for you).

Vladimir Tarasenko missed Saturday’s game with a UBI and now word has come out that he will be “re-evaluated” in 10 days. That pretty much says to me that he’s gone for at least three weeks and this could be something even more serious. Line combinations on Saturday, his first game out, looked like this:

  As for Jake Allen, he came off a shutout on March 7 and was put right back in there the very next game. I thought he played great Saturday, despite the OT loss – the Sharks dominated in the third and Allen was the reason it even went to overtime. Back-to-back Quality Stars for Allen and four out of his last five. The Blues really want to settle in on a goalie heading into the postseason, so Jordan Binnington (Winnington) will get the next start I’m sure – but he’ll be on a short leash. We’re closing in on the final 10 games and I feel like that will be the cutoff and one goalie will start eight of those 10.

I’ve never seen a player get suspended for straightening up his back like that before and I have mixed thoughts on it. Yes, he saw him coming, but could that be explained away as trying to prevent getting pushed from behind? Did his elbow swing back and catch him? Could he have gotten out of the way? Just such a gray area. I guess if it was intentional and brutal it would have been five or more. Josh Bailey returned to the game.

Voracek played with Sean Couturier and Oskar Lindblom last game. Claude Giroux had been playing with JVR and Nolan Patrick. The line shuffling now will likely take Nolan Patrick off the Claude Giroux line and perhaps reunite Giroux with Couturier and Travis Konecny. But that’s purely a guess.

The news is crazy these last few days in terms of key guys missing time. Jack Eichel has also been suspended for two games for this hit to the head:

The initial Zadorov hit, while his shoulder missed the head – I think he planted his helmet on Eichel’s on purpose and he should have been suspended. Eichel’s suspension is cut and dried (unlike Voracek’s).

Samuel Montembeault, a goalie I have been a fan of for quite some time, now boasts a 2-0-1 record for the Panthers after starting two straight for them on the weekend. The team is playing well in front of him and he hasn’t been truly tested yet. But right now he is Florida’s best option in the pipeline and since this is a young team on the rise (yeah, I’ve said this for two years now but it’s gonna happen), this could end up being the perfect storm. Montembeault isn’t great, but he’s the team’s best at what could be the right time. The Cory Crawford, the Chris Osgood, or the Jordan Winnington.

Trading away Gustav Nyquist didn’t help Michael Rasmussen any. The rookie is still seeing nine minutes per game. They could be ruining him. I don’t like prospects who get stuck at nine minutes per game for an entire season. Rarely works out for them.

Jacob Trouba, a subject of the Top 10 list later Monday, saw 6:42 of PP time for the Jets on Sunday and came up empty. With Josh Morrissey and Dustin Byfuglien out, this is his time to show us a glimpse of what he can do.

While Trouba saw 6:42 on the power play alone, Jack Roslovic saw 6:45 of ice time, period. Roslovic, who is also a subject of the Top 10, had an assist in the contest.

After 19 consecutive games with a point, the mighty Bruins were stopped by the Penguins 4-2. Brad Marchand was minus-3.

Danton Heinen, who subbed in for David Pastrnak on the Marchand line, picked up two assists. He has 14 points in his last 16 games. He had 14 points in 39 games before that. Pastrnak is still out for another week.

With two points Sunday, Jake Guentzel has 53 in his last 51 games.

Jared McCann also had two points Sunday and he has eight in his last seven games. I remember poolies jumped on him really quickly when he surprisingly made the Canucks as a 19-year-old in 2015. He was rushed. The Stratford native (as am I) is now in his fourth NHL season, though he was mostly in the minors for one of them, so I consider this his third. He’s clicking with Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel. We’ve learned from Conor Sheary (and going further back – Colby Armstrong) that there is no guarantee with this plum placement when an entire summer disrupts the chemistry, I do have more confidence in McCann’s upside and pedigree than I had with Sheary. And ten times out of ten I would roll the dice on just the ‘chance’ that it continues on into next season.

The 3M line was at it big time for the Flames Sunday. Mikael Backlund, Matt Tkachuk and Michal Frolik combined for 11 points. For Frolik, the biggest beneficiary of this arrangement, he tallied four assists after having gone six games without a point.

After starting off with a bang, tallying 13 points in 11 games, Brandon Pirri has just three in his last 16 including a goal on Sunday against the Flames.

Goals in back-to-back games for Carl Grundstrom in his NHL debut for Los Angeles. The Kings picked up Grundstrom from the Leafs in the Jake Muzzin trade. He also dished out three Hits, though it seemed like more. He’s already drawing comparisons stylistically to Dustin Brown, and I suspect he can put up similar numbers at his peak (55-plus points, 250-plus hits). He didn’t look out of place and I think there is a spot waiting for him on the big club in the fall.

It’s as if signing the big contract has helped Jakob Silfverberg turn the corner. He now has points in five straight games, seven in that span. And that’s on a team that is really just not scoring. We know this song and dance already, though. Every year, without fail, in either the first or the second half he produces like a 70-point player but in the other half of that season he produces like a 20-point player. If only we could get an advanced heads up on which half will be which. With the GM coaching the team right now, I feel pretty comfortable with Silf continuing for the duration. Bob Murray needs to make his latest big signing look like a good one, and you can see it in Jakob’s minutes – both at ES and on the PP.

Frozen Tools update: A new stat has been added, as well as two new reports. The stat is PPPts/60 which, obviously, is a player’s power-play points rate if broken up into 60 minutes of PP time (to match the regular pts/60 stat). It gives us a great look at how effective players have been on the power play and in my case at least it helps me evaluate how a young offensive player is trending/developing.

Also, goalie home/away splits are in now. Just go to the Report Generator, select goalies, and one of the buttons is cleverly entitled “Goalie Home/Away”.

DobberProspects update: Each scouting profile not only has our upside and certainty ranking at the top, scouting observations in the middle and the Elite Prospects career stats at the bottom…but now it has Mason Black’s fun pNHLe chart at the bottom. It takes a player’s stats in a given league at a given age and averages it out against history, spitting out his NHL potential upside. This didn’t get up and perfected until middle of last week (though I had posted it in last Monday’s Ramblings).
