Please forgive me if you have answered this before, but can you shed any light on the Garak/Ziyal relationship? I feel like there was a great friendship or found family dynamic that was overshadowed by the awkward romance angle.

Do you know what the intent was there? What's your take on it as a writer? Was there any influence from outside the writers room? It's almost a fandom truism that it was part of the effort to 'de-queer' Garak, but I can't say I've seen a source on that.

The end game of Ziyal/Garak relationship took place after I left the show at the end of Season 5, so I can't speak to all of it. I always thought of their relationship as a one-sided, unrequited one. Ziyal had a crush on Garak and he played to it to manipulate her (seeing her as a possible card to use against Dukat), though he did grow fond of her.

I'm not aware of any outside influence how their relationship played out. I'm not 100% sure if it's fair to qualify it as an attempt to "de-queer" Garak. In my mind, he was always queer, and that's how I wrote him, but it could never be too overt, given the times and opposition by people way above me in the CoC. We didn't so much de-queer him as never fully write him as queer, though I think Andy played to it as much as he could.

I will say I've never been fully satisfied with how Ziyal's story played out. I think her arc could have been much better if we'd had more time with her, but we came up with her character relatively late in the game, so we really didn't have the bandwidth to make her "part of the family" in the way we needed to. Plus having to change the actresses a couple of times due to availability issues didn't help.

In retrospect, I wish we'd put her in a relationship with Jake, but you know, if wishes were horses and all that.

I have been informed that apparently Marc Alaimo did ballet when he was in acting school and that thrills me personally so I wanted to make him do ballet and I think it's just so sweet to draw him with Ziyal so in the vain of my drawing of Ziyal and Dukat in little clay picture frame™ I decided that maybe Dukat taught Ziyal some ballet!!1!1!1!!!!! I think Sisko would have been worried about potential entanglements, but otherwise would have been fine with it. Ziyal was sweet and age-appropriate for Jake, so Sisko probably would've approved and been supportive.

Dukat would have pretended to approve, then tried to find a way to use the situation to his advantage. If he couldn't have done that, he would've become enraged. Because Dukat.

In S6 E6, "Sacrifice of Angels", Ziyal found Dukat fleeing from the impending federation takeover, and at this moment she at two choices.

(A) Leave with Dukat

(B) Stay with Kira (which was her canon answer but shhh)

But she was fucking killed, and now she won't leave my brain...

So i'm gonna projectile vomit some headcanons at you.

If she stayed with Kira

- Ziyal would cut her hair like Kira's (or just short) to look less cardassian-like

- Wore a lot more bajoran clothes (gotten from local shops or Garak)

- She'd start going to the Prophet temple with Kira, even getting an earing as she starts to believe in the Prophets

- I think she would try working different jobs around the station (Waitress (for Quark), seamstress (with Garak), nurse (with Julian), etc)

- But she'd probably just end up a civilian artist, maybe doing some commissions around the station

- Don't care, Ziyal/Nog supremacy 4 eva

- Kira wouldn't be her mother figure, but more of a big sister, helping her out in finding her place in DS9

If she went with Dukat

- Dukat would have her change her name, discarding her mother's last name

- Ziyal earlier showed an eagerness to learn how to fight, so to keep herself useful to Dukat she'd train to become a soldier (or at least learn to fight)

- Ziyal wouldn't draw as much

- Pseudo-military uniform as her normal everyday clothes

- I feel like she'd just follow Dukat around. When he was in Empok Nor, to Bajor to meet up with Kai Winn, to Cardassia whenever Dukat wanted, wherever

- At the end, Dukat would just manipulate her into sticking with him (and she falls for it)

- And after Dukat's death in the fire caves, I think she'd have a existential crisis and wonder back to Cardassia after the Dominion leaves
